Electricity shortages present a significant constraint on manufacturers,who rely on electricity as an important input into *** China,electricity supply has been growing ***,the rapid industrialization sometimes makes the power supply still unable to meet the *** a survey of 1673 Chinese manufacturing firms,this paper explores how firms response to electricity shortages and its impact on *** find that self-generation of electricity and investment in Research and Development(R&D)have significant positive relationships with electricity *** investigations reveal that self-generation is the most common way to deal with electricity ***,it aggravates productivity *** investment in Research and Development can promote productivity,it cannot offset the negative impact of electricity shortages on *** on subsamples show heterogeneity in the impacts of electricity shortages across *** particular,large firms are more inclined to invest in R&D than small and medium-sized firms *** are also the one who suffer significant productivity loss due to self-generation of *** it is possible for medium-sized firms to reduce productivity loss through R&D,they are not likely to invest in R&D as a response to electricity *** study illustrates that firms can hardly have effective solutions to electricity shortages,and policy makers should take great efforts to increase electricity supply.

Bioenergy development improves energy security and mitigates climate *** the stable supply of agricultural resources provides a solid basis for efficient bioenergy production,the climate-induced impacts such as changes in lempeniture and precipitation that potentially alter the farming decisions and cropping patterns should be taken into *** study designs two-stage stochastic programming with recourse model to investigate the net bioenergy production and emission reduction,as well as the bioenergy producers'strategies under various market operations and climate *** results show that the net production of biopower and biofuel are relatively stable because the supply of bioenergy feedstocks could remain at a constant level,but the farming decisions,cropping pattern,and resource utilization are likely to be altered by climate-induced *** results also indicate that for efficient bioenergy production,approximately 41.5 billion TWD(9.65 billion CNY)and 33.6 billion TWD(7.81 billion CNY)of bond principal should be invested in crop-based and residual-based technology,*** the face of strict environmental regulations and emission management,biopower technology becomes more competitive,and under such a circumstance,more than 98.3%of the low-cost bond should be invested in biopower development to achieve development efficiency.

In this paper,using the input-output model,the author first calculated the CO 2 emissions embodied in exports of China in 2002 and ***,the author empirically analyzed problems existing in the composition of exported products and analyzed its possible *** research results of this paper are as follows:Since China's entry into WTO,the CO 2 emissions embodied in exports of China have been increasing rapidly;the value of exported products of high-carbon emissions industries accounts for a relatively higher proportion to China's total exports value because China's carbon intensive products have a certain competitive ***,this paper has put forward relevant suggestions based on these results.

This study uses two different datasets to explore the stylized facts of interprovincial trade in China during the recent two decades. One dataset provides the magnitude of bilateral interprovincial goods trade calculated using firms ＇ value-added tax invoices. The other supplies estimates of interprovincial trade using provincial input-output tables. We find that China has both a large value and a high growth rate of interprovincial trade, but there still exists a home bias in internal trade for most provinces. In addition, disaggregation by product shows that the manufacturing sector has the largest share of interprovincial trade and this share continues to grow. Finally, the spatial distribution of trade suggests that all provinces can be clustered into a smaller number of trade areas with large intra-cluster trade. Therefore, China＇s central government should make more effort to reduce local protection, stimulate domestic demand and coordinate interregional trade among local jurisdictions.

Everbright Securities Ltd. erroneously submitted huge quantities of buy orders on SSE180 constituent stocks from 11：05 through 11：07 on 16 August 2013. This fat finger accident had a pronounced impact on the Chinese stock markets. This paper uses the accident to study market quality and investors＇ responses. We show that the Chinese stock markets were robust enough to stand the trial, exhibiting deep depths and strong resiliency. However, the markets performed poorly in terms of aggregating information because there were large price swings after the erroneous orders were executed. Moreover, investors quickly change their beliefs as to the reasons to the dramatic price jumps, consistent with information cascade theory.

China's 2004 value-added tax(VAT)pilot reform in the Northeast region,which changed the VAT from production type to consumption type,introduced a sizable tax credit for fixed investment in manufacturing industries,leading to more investment and higher productivity at firm *** paper,however,uses difference-in-difference estimation and finds a negative structural effect;that is,the VAT pilot reform leads to a reduction in the export sophistication of Northeast cities relative to other cities in China,and the results hold for a battery of robustness *** is found that resources are reallocated towards less-sophisticated *** the products with higher export sophistication are more skill and research and development(R&D)intensive,the shortfalls of skilled labor and R&D spending hinder the upgrading *** a new round of revitalization plans in the Northeast,policymakers should be cautious with similar structural effects and focus on increasing skilled labor supply and R&D investment.

Distance Puzzle:An Explanation from Global Value Chain Perspective

Theoretically,along with the technology progress and infrastructure improvement,geographical distance should have a diminishing effect on international trade over ***,the empirical studies failed to deliver consistent empirical support for *** result is known as“distance puzzle”.In this paper,we propose that the intermediate goods across borders caused by global value chain(GVC)could be an important explanation for the“distance puzzle”.We firstly build a Ricardian model with two stages of production,by which the trade elasticity under the framework of traditional trade and GVC trade are derived and compared,to theoretically explain why the GVC will result in the“distance puzzle”.Then we empirically investigate the effect of distance and cross-border times on bilateral gross trade and value-added trade over *** controlling the influence of the GVC,we observe a diminishing elasticity of distance over time,and prove that the GVC can explain the“distance puzzle”.The further heterogeneous analysis and robustness tests confirm our empirical results.
