Objective: To evaluate the deltamethrin pyrethroid insecticides against Anopheles labranchiae, potential malaria vector in ***: Six field populations of Anopheles labranchiae mosquitoes were collected from six localities in Northern and Central tunisia between October and November *** bioassays were performed to estimate the level of resistance in each collected population. Two synergists were used to estimate the involvement of detoxification enzymes in insecticide ***: All studied strains were resistant and the RR50 ranged from 12.5 in sample #1 to72.5 in sample #6. Synergist tests using piperonyl butoxide indicated the involvement of monoxygenases enzymes in the recorded resistance. In contrast, the increase of deltamethrin mortality was not significant in presence of S,S,sributyl phosphorothioate(0.8 tunisia. The use of pesticides and insecticides by both agricultural and public health departments in tunisia should be more rational to reduce the development of resistance in populations. Different insecticide applications should be implemented alternately.

Ohjective To review the clinical features and laboratory investigations of ciguatera patients in Hong Kong between 2004 and 2007 in order to show the timely sampling of implicated fish from ciguatera victims and application of validated mouse bioassay for confirming suspected clinical cases of ciguatera. Methods Diagnosis of the ciguatera victims was based on history of coral fish consumption and clinical presentations stated in official guidelines for clinical diagnosis of ciguatera fish poisoning in Hong Kong. Food remnants of coral fish samples were collected swiftly from ciguatera victims between 2004 and 2007 for ciguatoxins （CTXs） analysis. Results Major clinical symptoms in ciguatera patients included gastrointestinal and neurological effects including limb numbness and diarrhoea, which developed at 0.5 to 15 hours after consumption of fish. In most cases, neurological symptoms were more common than gastrointestinal symptoms. A broad range of attack rate （10%-100%） was observed in each ciguatera outbreak. Validated mouse bioassay on ether extracts of the food remnant samples confirmed that all were CTXs-positive （〈0.5 - 4.3 MU/20 mg ether extract） and directly linked to the corresponding ciguatera cases. Conclusion Consistency between clinical and laboratory analysis for ciguatera poisoning illustrates the application of laboratory mouse bioassay in a timely fashion for confirming ciguatera poisoning cases and implementing effective public health measures. With further improvement in laboratory techniques, features of ciguatera fish poisoning cases can be better defined, Further studies are needed to determine the risk of each class of CTXs （Pacific-, Indian- and Caribbean-CTXs） in Hong Kong.

Objective To investigate the possible protection provided by oral quercetin pretreatment against hepatic ischemia-reperfusion injury in rats. Methods The quercetin （0.13 mmol/kg） was orally administrated in 50 min prior to hepatic ischemia-reperfusion injury. Ascorbic acid was also similarly administered. The hepatic content of quercetin was assayed by high performance liquid chromatography （HPLC）. Plasma glutamic pyruvic transaminase （GPT）, glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase （GOT） activities and malondialdehyde （MDA） concentration were measured as markers of hepatic ischemia-reperfusion injury. Meanwhile, hepatic content of glutathione （GSH）, activities of superoxide dismutase （SOD）, glutathione peroxidase （GSH-Px） and xanthine oxidase （XO）, total antioxidant capacity （TAOC）, contents of reactive oxygen species （ROS） and MDA, DNA fragmentation were also determined. The epidemiology of Salmonella involves food, especially meat and dairy products. These have a high salmonella outbreak in the summer. The majority of Salmonella enteritis in young children occurs in the form of scattered cases. At least 25% of summer gastroenteritis in young children is caused by Salmonella. In Western Europe, S. typhimurium accounts for nearly 70% of isolates. The objective of this study was to investigate the Salmonella contaminating meat and dairy products as well as define the percentages of contamination by Salmonella from 2004 to 2006, by the department of hygiene of tunis. For this study, we collected samples in various motherboard solutions, and conducted a pre-nonselective enrichment in selective enrichment in isolation and identification and ultimately biochemical confirmation. One hundred and sixty two samples, 125 samples of meat products including 68 samples of red meat （beef and sheep, beef, offal and Merguez） and 57 samples of poultry （chicken and turkey）, 37 samples of milk products which included 32 samples of cheese and five samples milk, were analysed microbiologically from 2004 to 2006, in the Health Service in tunis. These analyses include the detection and enumeration of Salmonella. From 2004 to 2006, the rate of infections by the Salmonella, meat and dairy products were： 55.9% for red meat, 71.9% for poultry, 68.8% for cheeses, 40% for milk. The meat of poultry is contaminated with Salmonella that the cheeses, which are more than red meats, which are also more contaminated than milk. This might be due to a lack of hygiene throughout the circuit processing （slaughter, transport, processing, etc.）. The increased risk of contamination of milk products by Salmonella is proportional to the manipulation done on these products. The latter must be handled by pasteurization and sterilization.

The study of the reproduction of the Glossy Ibis （Plegadisfalcinellus） in tunisia was undertaken from 2008 to 2010. Until the discovery of nesting in 2008, this species had only been considered as wintering in tunisia. The tunisian breeding population resides in the Lebna Dam in the north east of the country where it forms a mixed nesting colony with other species of the family Ardeidae （（Bubulcus ibis （Bi）： 388 pairs, Ardeola ralloides （Ar）： 17 pairs, Egretta garzetta （Eg）： 27 pairs）, （Bi： 300 pairs, At： 25 pairs, Eg： 40 pairs） and （Bi： 400 pairs, Ar： 30 pairs, Eg： 10 pairs） recorded in 2008, 2009 and 2010 respectively）. All nests were constructed on Acacia horrida. Laying began in early May. The average clutch size over the three years of the study was 3.44 ± 0.73 eggs （N = 29 nests）. Hatching success was 83 % （2.86 ± 1.18 eggs hatched/nest） and 2.65 ± 1.17 hatchlings/nest survived until the age of 10 to 12 days. Egg mortality was 17% during the incubation phase and chick mortality was 7.2%. No interannual variation was detected in these parameters.

Does Exposure to Nitrate in Drinking Water Contribute Anything the Effect of Water Chlorination on Children Methemoglobin Levels?

Previous studies showed contradictory findings regarding the relationship between nitrate in drinking well-water and abnormal methemoglobin (MetHb) level (>2%) among children. We studied the effect of water chlorination in this relationship in children aged up to 7. 240 subclinical children participated in this cross-sectional study. Water nitrate was analyzed for each participant, and so was blood MetHb. Analysis of two water nitrate exposure levels (50 mg/L as )-other extraneous factors (Breslow-Day-Test for interaction), bivariate and multivariate analyses were performed. Abnormal MetHb levels (up to 7.9%) were associated (p-value = 0.020) with exposure to drinking water nitrate. Only water chlorination was an effect modifier. Among those who do not disinfect water, the prevalence of ab- normal MetHb for those with nitrate level >50 mg/L was 4.95 (p-value = 0.001, 95% CI = [1.92 - 12.79]) times the prevalence for those with nitrate level <50 mg/L. Whereas, among those who do disinfect water, the prevalence for those with high nitrate levels was only 1.38 (p-value = 0.435, 95% CI = [0.62 - 3.07]) times the prevalence of those with low nitrate levels. The biological plausibility of a relationship between waterborne microorganisms, drinking water nitrate, drinking water chlorination, and development of an abnormal MetHb level needs to be further explored.
