Cropland abandonment has been a widespread phenomenon in mountainous areas due to the increasing number of natural disasters and the massive migration of rural labor in the process of rapid *** transfer is a crucial prerequisite for ensuring food security and fostering rural *** to promote land transfer in mountainous areas remains a challenging but important ***,there is a dearth of research examining land transfers among farm households that specifically address mountainous regions,and the influence of grassroots governance and geographic location has not been thoroughly elucidated within this particular *** on 895household samples collected in Dabie Mountainous Area in China,this study employs binary and ordinal logistic regression models to provide a more comprehensive analysis on land transfers among rural households and the determinants,including the decision to transfer land,the existence of land transfer rents,the channel of land transfer,the duration of the transfer,the pre-transfer cultivation situation,and the level of satisfaction with the land transfer *** findings reveal that grassroots governance,geographic location,livelihood capital,and demographic factors significantly influence land transfers among rural ***,villagers'public participation positively affects land transfer participation(β=0.235,pgovernment-mediated land transfers with longer *** distances to the township and county centers have c

Warm-wet climatic conditions are widely regarded as conducive to remarkable tree growth,alleviating climatic ***,the notable decline in tree growth observed in the southern edge of boreal forests has heightened concerns over the spatial-temporal dynamics of forest ***,attaining a comprehensive grasp of the underlying patterns and their propelling factors remains a formidable *** collected tree ring samples from a network of 50 sites across the Greater Xing'an *** samples were subsequently grouped into two distinct clusters,designated as Groups A and *** percentage change of growth(GC,%)and the proportion of declining sites were utilized to assess forest *** decline in tree growth within Larix gmelinii forests exhibits significant regional variation,accompanied by temporal fluctuations even within a given *** A exhibited a pronounced increase in frequency(59.26%)of occurrences and encountered more severe declines(21.65%)in tree growth subsequent to the 1990s,contrasting sharply with Group B,which observed lower frequencies(20.00%)and relatively less severe declines(21.02%)prior to the *** primary impetus underlying the opposite radial growth increments observed in Larix gmelinii trees from the interplay between their differential response to temperatures and wetter climatic conditions,which is significantly influenced by varying stand *** cold-dry conditions,low-density forests may experience soil water freezing,exacerbating drought conditions and thereby inhibiting tree growth,in Group *** growth in high-density stands is restrained by warm-wet conditions,in Group *** results provide new insights into the variability at the southern edge of the boreal forest biome with different responses to density and climate.

Waste sorting and its effects on carbon emission reduction:Evidence from China

Considering the importance of waste sorting and treatment in the development of an ecological civilization,empirically evaluating the environmental impact of such programs is particularly *** study uses Xiao'er Township in Gong County,Sichuan Province,China as a case study to analyze and estimate the carbon emission reduction effects of the township's pilot waste sorting *** the five-point sampling method,samples of waste are collected,reviewed,and measured for their major components and other key ***,questionnaire surveys and interviews are conducted in the township,along with investigations into existing records and other relevant *** study adopts the solid waste management-greenhouse gas(SWM-GHG)calculator to study the township *** case study results imply that proper waste sorting and treatment methods in villages and townships could play a major role in the reduction of carbon ***,after implementing waste sorting in Xiao'er,annual carbon emissions were reduced by 2081 tons—equivalent to the electricity consumption of a family of three people for 1718 years,or the amount of CO_(2)emitted by 2641.6L vehicles driving once around the *** the optimal scenario simulation,increasing the recycling of wet waste and recyclable waste further,the level of carbon emission reduction in Xiao'er could reach up to 4482 tons per *** to the international general carbon trade price,this is equivalent to adding 44,820 US dollars to the GDP,or to an annual saving of 5.71 million *** these waste management methods are expanded to villages and townships across China,then the carbon emissions reduced in a year would be equal to the CO_(2)emitted from electricity generation in Beijing for over a *** on these findings,this paper provides three policy recommendations for effective carbon emission reduction:increasing residents'environmental protection awareness over the long term,boosting

Regulating dual-use research:Lessons from Israel and the United States

Over the past 20 years,and with greater urgency since the H5N1 papers controversy(2012),dual-use research of concern(DURC)has been extensively debated by the scientific community,regulators,and the public at *** have raised the need to regulate DURC;however,despite the urgency of this issue,to date,only two countries have implemented specific regulations,United States and Israel(notably,China is in the final stages of creating a set of DURC-related regulations).In this paper,I have compared these policies as case studies that may benefit other ***,the present study aimed to critically compare the DURC policies of the US and Israel and determine whether their different approaches provide a rigorous framework for the regulation of DURC.I have shown that in some aspects,they have adopted similar approaches;for example,allowing local committees to play a role in assessing the ***,they differ in certain important aspects;for instance,the US policies have laid out a mechanism through which academic institutions and the government decide jointly on how to address risky studies,while the Israeli law places the authority solely in government *** aim in comparing the policies is twofold;first,to reveal the weaknesses and strengths of each policy,thereby aiding their improvement,and second,to provide those that are considering developing policies in this field an overview of what the current approaches look like,thereby enabling them to articulate their own approach while taking into account the experience gained by the US and Israel.

As the level of social credit burden rises,to ease the liquidity constraint for residents is currently an important way to boost the domestic demand in *** paper uses the panel data of Chinese provincial-level administrative units in 2007−2017 and adopts the panel regression model and panel quantile regression model to empirically analyze the relationship between debt burden level and average propensity to consume(APC).The result shows that increase in the level of macro debt burden can significantly improve the APC of residents;the marginal promoting effect of macro debt burden for the APC is in a V-shaped structure;such marginal influence differs evidently in different areas,with the marginal promoting effect turning out most prominent in the northeast of ***,it’s suggested for government to keep refining the credit market,increase residents’income in multiple means,guide supply of liquidity towards the real economy and promote equalization of basic public services,so as to realize the expansion and upgrade of consumption.

Despite being the regions with the least levels of carbon emissions in the world, African countries are facing unique challenges on climate change, increased carbon emission levels and the need for environmental governance improvement. This study, therefore, examined the implications of economic growth and governance on CO2emissions in West Africa. Specifically, the study investigated the role of governance in moderating the effect of economic growth on CO2emissions in West Africa. The study utilized data for 16 West African countries from 2000 to 2020 in an unbalanced panel data framework. Empirical analyses were conducted using the Instrumental Variable Fixed Effects estimator with Driscoll and Kraay Standard Errors, as well as the Instrumental Variable Quantile Regression in order to account for serial correlation, endogeneity and conditional heteroskedasticity. The following conclusions were drawn from the results. First,economic growth significantly increases CO2emissions in the region with the Environmental Kuznet Curve hypothesis present. Second, the quantile regression estimates reveal that the effect of economic growth on CO2emissions is higher in countries where the initial level of carbon emissions is considerably high. Third, the results further show that in the presence of improved governance quality, economic growth does not significantly influence CO2emissions in the region. Fourth, political stability and regulatory quality were the only indicators of governance that significantly impacted environmental pollution in the region. Finally, we found that other factors such as trade, urbanization, and renewable energy also significantly influenced CO2emissions in the region. The study concludes by highlighting the importance of governance in moderating the effect of economic growth on CO2emissions, as well as the importance of heterogeneous analysis for understanding the dynamism in economic relationships.
