A case of Horner syndrome diagnosed during the follow-up after major thoracic trauma is presented in this report. A 10- year-old boy was admitted to the emergency service with severe thoracic trauma with left clavicular and first rib fracture after a traffic accident. During the follow-up, myosis and ptosis were recognized in his left eye. Cranial tomography and neurological examination were all normal. The symptoms were thought to be caused by compression of the local hematoma to the cervical ganglia. After 30 days of conservative treatment with tube thoracostomies, he was discharged with his Horner syndrome. After 6 months of follow-up, the findings of Horner syndrome were found to be partially resolved. First rib fracture associated with Horner syndrome is very rarely seen in children, and only 2 cases were found in english-language literature. Our case seems to be the third reported case. Horner syndrome should be kept in mind in cases of first rib fractures. When head trauma is considered, as it can be mistaken with anisocoria, this knowledge may help the surgeon in differential diagnosis.

Introduction/Background: No research has been conducted on the relevance of intuitive eating as a promising strategy for sustainable weight management among Latinas. This study translated Tylka and Kroon Van Diest’s (2013) Intuitive Eating Scale-2 (IES-2) into Spanish and employed an exploratory factor analysis (EFA) to examine evidence of validity. Methods: We recruited Latinas from community venues in South San Diego, California to participate in this cross-sectional study. Inclusion criteria were: at least 18 years of age, monolingual Spanish or bilingual english/Spanish speaker, and self-identified Latina. In total, 150 Latinas completed a structured, face-to-face interview, which included the Spanish IES-2. Data were used in conducting an EFA. Results: Four items were removed for not loading on the initial EFA. Once items were removed, we extracted five factors with Eigenvalues greater than 1, which accounted for almost two-thirds of the variance. Of the four original IES-2 factors, two were retained identically: Reliance on Hunger and Satiety Cues (RHSC) and Body-Food Choice Congruence (B-FCC). The Eating for Physical Rather than Emotional Reasons (EPR) subscale lost one item in the initial EFA, and was not unidimensional, resulting in two separate subscales. Evidence of score reliability was marginal to strong (α = 0.63 - 0.87). Discussion: This study is first to provide evidence of validity and reliability for a Spanish translation of the IES-2. The results suggest that the proposed Spanish IES-2 can be used to study intuitive eating behaviors and attitudes among Latinas. However, further research with larger sample sizes and other diverse populations are suggested.

AIM: To review methods of assessing adherence and strategies to improve adherence to cardiovascular disease(CVD) medications,among South Asian CVD patients. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review of english language studies that examined CVD medication adherence in South Asian populations from 1966 to April 1,2015 in SCOPUS and Pub Med. Working in duplicate,we identified 61 studies. After exclusions,26 studies were selected for full text review. Of these,17 studies were included in the final review. We abstracted data on several factors including study design,study population,method of assessing adherence and adherence rate. RESULTS: These studies were conducted in India(n = 11),Pakistan(n = 3),Bangladesh(n = 1),Nepal(n = 1) and Sri Lanka(n = 1). Adherence rates ranged from 32%-95% across studies. Of the 17 total publications included,10 focused on assessing adherence to CVD medications and 7 focused on assessing the impact of interventions on medication adherence. The validated Morisky Medication Adherence Scale(MMAS) was used as the primary method of assessing adherence in five studies. Three studies used validated questionnaires similar to the MMAS,and one study utilized Medication Event Monitoring System caps,with the remainder of the studies utilizing pill count and self-report measures. As expected,studies using non-validated self-report measures described higher rates of adherence than studies using validated scale measurements and pill count. The included intervention studies examined the use of polypill therapy,provider education and patient counseling to improve medication adherence. CONCLUSION: The overall medication adherence rates were low in the region,which suggest a growing need for future interventions to improve adherence.

Objective: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic progressive disease with multiple neurological impairments. The disease can also dramatically affect the health-related quality of life of patients. The objective of this study was to investigate the validation of the translated and cross-culturally adapted MSQOL- 54 in 183 Turkish MS patients. Methods: 183 adults classified as having definite MS patients were enrolled into the study. Patients were classified into four severity groups according to the expanded disability status scale (EDSS); group I(EDSS 0- 4), group II (EDSS 4.5- 5.5), group III (EDSS 6- 6.5) and group IV (EDSS 7- 8). MSQOL- 54 questionnaire were translated and culturally adapted into Turkish. Associations between age, gender, disease duration,EDSS score, marital status, education and health insurance and the MSQOL- 54 physical and mental health composite scores were determined. Results: The mean age of the 183 patients (138 female and 45 male) was 39 ± 10 years. The questionnaire was well accepted but small cultural adaptations were required. EDSS scores showed significant associations with the MSQOL- 54 physical and mental health composite scores. From the different EDSS groups only, the group I (EDSS 0- 4) score was significantly associated with the physical health composite as well as the disease duration showed significant correlation with the physical and mental composite scores. None of the other EDSS groups and the other parameters showed correlation with physical health composite or mental health composite. Conclusion: Assessment of quality of life of MS patients in addition to disease severity and disability level is important, because it provides unique information that is important to patients and to clinicians. A translation of an existing MS-targeted HRQOL measure from US english into Turkish was easily administered and well accepted in a Turkish MS sample.

Background. An insect bite-like reaction and exaggerated reactions to insec t bites are nonspecific phenomena described primarily in association with chroni c lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), but also with other hematological malignancies. Tw o cases of mantle cell lymphoma (MCL), one associated with an insect bite-like reaction and the other with a true hypersensitivity to mosquito bites, have pre viously been reported in the english language literature. The pathogenesis of th e skin eruption may be related to the release of different cytokines that also t rigger an IgE elevation and dermal eosinophils. Case report. We describe two add itional cases of MCL associated with an insect bite-like reaction. One patient had been diagnosed with MCL 4.5 years prior to the appearance of the skin erupt ion, and in the other patient the skin symptoms preceded the diagnosis of the MC L by 2 years and led to its diagnosis. Conclusions. Insect bite-like reaction may appear in patients with MCL. It is important to recognize this entity becaus e it may be the presenting sign of MCL.
