It has been shown clinically that continuous removal of ischemia/reperfusion-induced reactive oxygen species is not conducive to the recovery of late ***,previous studies have shown that excessive increases in hypochlorous acid after stroke can cause severe damage to brain *** previous studies have found that a small amount of hypochlorous acid still exists in the later stage of stroke,but its specific role and mechanism are currently *** simulate stroke in vivo,a middle cerebral artery occlusion rat model was established,with an oxygen-glucose deprivation/reoxygenation model established in vitro to mimic *** found that in the early stage(within 24 hours)of ischemic stroke,neutrophils produced a large amount of hypochlorous acid,while in the recovery phase(10 days after stroke),microglia were activated and produced a small amount of hypochlorous ***,in acute stroke in rats,hypochlorous acid production was prevented using a hypochlorous acid scavenger,taurine,or myeloperoxidase inhibitor,4-aminobenzoic acid *** results showed that high levels of hypochlorous acid(200μM)induced neuronal apoptosis after oxygen/glucose deprivation/***,in the recovery phase of the middle cerebral artery occlusion model,a moderate level of hypochlorous acid promoted the proliferation and differentiation of neural stem cells into neurons and *** suggests that hypochlorous acid plays different roles at different phases of cerebral ischemia/reperfusion *** levels of hypochlorous acid(5 and 100μM)promoted nuclear translocation ofβ-*** transfection of single-site mutation plasmids,we found that hypochlorous acid induced chlorination of theβ-catenin tyrosine 30 residue,which promoted nuclear ***,our study indicates that maintaining low levels of hypochlorous acid plays a key role in the recovery of neurological function.

AIM：To evaluate the phagocytic activity and neutrophil oxidative burst in liver ***： In 45 patients with advanced postalcoholic liver cirrhosis （aged 45±14 years） and in 25 healthy volunteers （aged 38±5 years）, the percentage of phagocytizing cells after in vitro incubation with E. coli （Phagotest Kit）, phagocytic activity （mean intensity of fluorescence, MIF） and the percentage of neutrophil oxidative burst （Bursttest Kit）, and the level of free oxygen radical production （MIF of Rodamine 123） were analyzed by flow cytometry. The levels of soluble sICAM-1, sVCAM-1, sP-selectin, sE-selectin, sL-selectin, and TNF-α were determined in blood ***： The percentage of E. coli phagocytizing neutrophils in liver cirrhosis patients was comparable to that in healthy subjects. MIF of neutrophil - ingested E. coli was higher in patients with liver cirrhosis. The oxidative burst in E. coli phagocytizing neutrophils generated less amount of active oxygen compounds in liver cirrhosis pa- tients （MIF of R123：24.7±7.1 and 29.7±6.6 in healthy, P〈0.01）. Phorbol myristate acetate （PMA） - stimulated neutrophilsproduced less reactive oxidants in liver cirrhosis patients than in healthy subjects （MIF of R123： 42.7±14.6 vs 50.2±13.3, P〈0.01）. A negative correlation was observed between oxidative burst MIF of PMA-stimulated neutrophils and ALT and AST levels （r -0.35, P〈0.05; r-0.4, P〈0.03）. sVCAM-1, sICAM-1, sE-selectin concentrations correlated negatively with the oxygen free radical production （MIF of R123） in neutrophils after PMA stimulation in liver cirrhosis patients （r-0.45, P〈0.05, r-0.41, P〈0.05; r-0.39, P〈0.05, respectively）.CONCLUSION： Neutrophil metabolic activity diminishes together with the intensification of liver failure. The metabolic potential of phagocytizing neutrophils is significantly lower in liver cirrhosis patients, which can be one of the causes of immune mechanism damage. Hydrogen sul fi de(H_2S) is recognized as one of three gasotransmitters together with nitric oxide(NO) and carbon monoxide(CO). As a signaling molecule, H_2S plays an important role in physiology and shows great potential in pharmaceutical applications. Along this line, there is a need for the development of H_2S prodrugs for various reasons. In this review, we summarize different H_2S prodrugs, their chemical properties, and some of their potential therapeutic applications.

Disturbances in the metabolism of lipoprotein profiles and oxidative stress in hemodialyzed （HD） and post-renal transplant （Tx） patients are proatherogenic, but elevated concentrations of plasma high-density lipoprotein （HDL） reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. We investigated the concentrations of lipid, lipoprotein, HDL particle, oxidized low-density lipoprotein （ox-LDL） and anti-ox-LDL, and paraoxonase-1 （PON-1） activity in HD （n=33） and Tx （n=71） patients who were non-smokers without active inflammatory disease, liver disease, diabetes, or malignancy. HD patients had moderate hypertriglyceridemia, normocholesterolemia, low HDL-C, apolipoprotein A-I （apoA-I） and HDL particle concentrations as well as PON-1 activity, and increased ox-LDL and anti-ox-LDL levels. Tx patients had hypertriglyceridemia, hypercholesterolemia, moderately decreased HDL-C and HDL particle concentrations and PON-1 activity, and moderately increased ox-LDL and anti-ox-LDL levels as compared to the reference, but ox-LDL and anti-ox-LDL levels and PON-1 activity were more disturbed in HD patients. However, in both patient groups, lipid and lipoprotein ratios （total cholesterol （TC）/HDL-C, LDL-C/HDL-C, triglyceride （TG）/HDL-C, HDL-C/non-HDL-C, apoA-I/apoB, HDL-C/apoA-I, TG/HDL） were atherogenic. The Spearman＇s rank coefficient test showed that the concentration of ox-LDL correlated positively with HDL particle level （R=0.363, P=0.004）, and negatively with TC （R=-0.306, P=0.012）, LDL-C （R=-0.283, P=0.020）, and non-HDL-C （R=-0.263, P=0.030） levels in Tx patients. Multiple stepwise forward regression analysis in Tx patients demonstrated that ox-LDL concentration, as an independent variable, was associated significantly positively with HDL particle level. The results indicated that ox-LDL and de- creased PON-1 activity in Tx patients may give rise to more mildly-oxidized HDLs, which are less stable, easily undergo metabolic remodeling, generate a greater number of smaller pre-13-HDL particle

AIM： To investigate the presence of the cag-pathogenicity island and the associated histological damage caused by strains with complete cag-PAI and with partial deletions in correlation to the disease status. METHODS： We analyzed the complete cag-PAI of 174 representative Helicobacter pylori （H pylori ） clinical isolates obtained from patients with duodenal ulcer, gastric ulcer, gastric cancer, and non-ulcer dyspepsia using eight different oligonucleotide primers viz cagA1, cagA2, cagAP1, cagAP2, cagE, cagT, LEC-1, LEC-2 spanning five different loci of the whole cag-PAI by polymerase chain reaction （PCR）. RESULTS： The complete screening of the genes comprising the cag-PAI showed that larger proportions of subjects with gastric ulcer （97.8%） inhabited strains with complete cag-PAI, followed by gastric cancer （85.7%）, non-ulcer dyspepsia （7.1%）, and duodenal ulcer （6.9%）, significant differences were found in the percentage distribution of the genes in all the clinical groups studied. It was found that strains with complete cag-PAI were able to cause severe histological damage than with the partially deleted ones. CONCLUSION： The cag-PAI is a strong virulent marker in the disease pathogenesis as it is shown that a large number of those infected with strain with complete cag-PAI had one or the other of the irreversible gastric pathologies and interestingly 18.5% of them developed gastric carcinoma. The presence of an intact cag- PAI correlates with the development of more severe pathology, and such strains were found more frequently in patients with severe gastroduodenal disease. Partial deletions of the cag-PAI appear to be sufficient to render the organism less pathogenic.

A facility and method for109 Cd radionuclide-induced energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescent(EDXRF) were developed to determine the Fe,Zn,Br,Rb,and Sr concentrations in the specimens of human prostatic *** of expressed prostatic fluid were obtained from 51 men(mean age 51 years,range 18–82 years) with apparently normal prostates using standard rectal massage *** values(M ± SEL) for concentration of trace elements(mg L^(-1)) in human prostate fluid were:Fe 9.04 ±1.21,Zn 573 ± 35,Br 3.58 ± 0.59,Rb 1.10 ± 0.08,and Sr B *** was shown that the results of trace element analysis in the micro-samples(20 l L) are sufficiently representative for assessment of the Fe,Zn,Br,and Rb concentration in the prostate *** facility for109 Cd radionuclide-induced EDXRF is comparatively compact and can be located in close proximity to the site of carrying out the massage *** means of Zn and Rb concentration obtained for prostate fluid agree well with median of reported *** the first time,the Fe and Br concentrations,as well as the upper limit of the Sr concentration,were determined in the human prostate fluid.

A nondestructive instrumental neutron activation analysis with high-resolution gamma-ray spectrometry of long-lived radionuclides was developed and used for measurement of trace element contents in samples of bone to determine health and diseases. Using this method, the silver(Ag), cobalt(Co), chromium(Cr), iron(Fe), mercury(Hg), rubidium(Rb), antimony(Sb), selenium(Se), and zinc(Zn) mass fractions were estimated in bone samples from 27 patients with intact bone(12 females and 15 males, aged from 16 to 49 years) who had died from various non-bone-related causes, mainly unexpected traumas,and from 5 patients with chondroma(2 females and 3males, 15–42 years old), obtained from open biopsies or after operation. The reliability of the differences in the results between intact bone and bone affected by chondroma was evaluated by a parametric Student's t test and a nonparametric Mann–Whitney U test. It was found that in the bone affected by chondroma, the mean mass fractions of Co, Cr, Fe, Se, Sb, and Zn were significantly higher than in normal bone tissues. In the neoplastic bone, many correlations between trace elements found in the control group were no longer evident. This work revealed that there is asignificant disturbance of the trace element metabolism in bone affected by chondroma.

AIM: To examine the effect of doxycycline on the activity of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and oxidative stress in gastric tissues of rats following gastric ***: Gastric ulcers were generated in rats by administration of 70% ethanol,and activity of doxycycline was tested by administration 30 min prior to ***,the effect of doxycycline was tested in an indomethacin-induced gastric ulcer *** activities and expression of MMPs were examined by zymography and Western blot ***: Gastric injury in rats as judged by elevated ulcer indices following exposure to ulcerogen,either indomethacin or ethanol,was reversed significantly by ***-induced ulcerated gastric tissues exhibited about 12-fold higher proMMP-9 activity and about 5-fold higher proMMP-3 activity as compared to control ***,ethanol induced about 22-fold and about 6-fold higher proMMP-9 and proMMP-3 activities,respectively,in rat gastric *** proMMP-9 and MMP-3 activities were markedly decreased by doxycycline in ulcerogen treated rat gastric *** contrast,the reduced MMP-2 activity in ulcerated tissues was increased by doxycycline during ulcer *** the other hand,doxycycline inhibited significantly proMMP-9,-2 and -3 activities in *** addition,doxycycline reduced oxidative load in gastric tissues and scavenged H2O2 in *** results suggest a novel regulatory role of doxycycline on MMP-2 activity in addition to inhibitory action on MMP-9 and MMP-3 during prevention of gastric ***: This is the first demonstration of dual action of doxycycline,that is,regulation of MMP activity and reduction of oxidative stress in arresting gastric injury.

Chinese Medicine Syndromes in Congestive Heart Failure:A Literature Study and Retrospective Analysis of Clinical Cases

Objective： To discuss the characteristics of Chinese medicine （CM） syndrome factors and distribution of congestive heart failure （CHF）, and provide a basis for the diagnosis criteria of essential syndromes. Methods： Based on databases of China National Knowledge infrastructure （CNKI, 1980--2012） and Chinese Journal of Chongqing VlP Database （1989-2012）, the eligible studies in CHF and extracted factors associated with compound syndromes were analyzed. All the syndromes were classified into deficiency, excess, and deficiency-excess in complexity syndrome were classified. Compound syndromes were separated into syndrome factors including single, double, three or four factors, along with the frequency of occurrence. The relation of CHF syndromes with age, gender, primary disease, brain natriuretic peptide （BNP） and cardiac functional grade was studied in 1,451 CHF cases （between December 2010 and September 2012）, and the clinical distribution of common CHF syndromes was summarized. Results： The literature study involved 6,799 CHF cases in 66 literatures after screening. Of the different factors affecting CHF, qi deficiency was the most important one. In deficiency syndrome, Xin （Heart）-qi-deficiency was the most common single factor, and deficiency of both qi and yin was the most common double factor. The retrospective analysis involved 1,451 CHF cases （431 cases with test results of BNP）. The xin blood stasis and obstruction and deficiency of both qi and yin syndrome were mostly seen in female patients, and phlegm-blocking-Xin-vessel and qi-deficiency-blood-stasis syndrome mostly in males. Xin-qi-deficiency and qi-deficiency-blood-stasis syndrome were mostly seen in patients aged 50--60 years. Patients aged over 60 years likely manifest deficiency of both qi and yin and Xin blood stasis and obstruction syndrome. The severity of syndrome is aggravated with increased BNP and cardiac functional grade. Conclusions： The essential syndromes of CHF include qi-deficiency-blood
