Progressive memory loss and cognitive impairment are the main clinical manifestations of Alzheimer’s disease(AD).Currently,there is no effective drug available for the treatment of *** studies have demonstrated that the cognitive impairment of AD is associated with oxidative stress and the inhibition of AKT and ERK *** seed proanthocyanidin extract(GSPE)has been shown to have strong antioxidant effect and can protect the nervous system from oxidative stress *** study aimed to investigate the protective effect of GSPE on the cognitive and synaptic impairments of AD using a sporadic AD rat model induced by intracerebroventricular(ICV)injection of streptozotocin(STZ)(ICV-STZ).Rats were treated with GSPE(50,100,or 200 mg/kg every day)by intragastrical(ig.)administration for continuous 7 weeks,and ICV-STZ(3 mg/kg)was performed on the first day and third day of week *** and memory abilities were assessed by the Morris water maze(MWM)test at week *** behavioral test,hippocampal long-term potentiation(LTP)was recorded,and the levels of malondialdehyde(MDA),superoxide dismutases(SOD),glutathione(GSH)and the protein expression of AKT and ERK were measured in the hippocampus and cerebral cortex of *** study revealed that ICV-STZ significantly impaired the working learning ability and hippocampal LTP of rats,significantly increased the levels of MDA,and decreased the activity of SOD and GSH in the hippocampus and cerebral *** contrast,GSPE treatment prevented the impairment of cognitive function and hippocampal LTP induced by ICV-STZ,decreased the level of MDA,and increased the level of SOD and ***,Western blot results showed that GSPE treatment could prevent the loss of AKT and ERK activities in the hippocampus and cerebral cortex induced by *** findings demonstrate that GSPE treatment could ameliorate the impairment of cognitive ability and hippocampal synaptic plasticity in a rat model of sporadic AD

The incidence of obesity has been rapidly increasing, and this condition has become a major public health threat. A substantial shift in environmental factors and lifestyle, such as unhealthy diet, is among the major driving forces of the global obesity pandemic. Longitudinal studies and randomized intervention trials have shown that genetic susceptibility to obesity may interact with dietary factors in relation to the body mass index and risk of obesity. This review summarized data from recent longitudinal studies and intervention studies on variations and diets and discussed the challenges and future prospects related to this area and public health implications.

To evaluate the implication of methymalonic acid (MMA) in the early diagnosis of neural tube defects (NTD), a quantitative assay for MMA was established by using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry with stable isotope of MMA as an internal standard. Amniotic fluid and maternal urine MMA concentration, maternal serum folate, red blood cell folate and vitamin B 12 levels were measured in the middle term of NTD-affected and normal pregnancies. Amniotic fluid and maternal urine MMA concentrations in the middle term of NTD affected pregnancies (1.4±0.9 μmol/L, and 22.1±12.6 nmol/μmol creatinine) were significantly higher than that of normal pregnancies (1.0±0.4μmol/L, and 2.5±1.1 nmol/μmol creatinine). There was no significant difference between normal and NTD pregnancies for serum folate, red blood cell folate and vitamin B 12 levels. The results suggested that MMAs in amniotic fluid and maternal urine are sensitive markers for early diagnosis of NTD. Vitamin B 12 is an active cofactor involved in the remethylation of homocycteine and its deficiency is an independent risk factor for NTD. MMA is a specific and sensitive marker for intracellular vitamin B 12 deficiency. This study suggests that it is necessary to monitor the vitamin B 12 deficiency and advocates vitamin B 12 supplementation with folate prevention program.

To investigate the effects of polyethylene glycol cross-linking on the mechanical properties, 80 porcine aortic valves were harvested, decellularized, and introduced with sulflaydryl. Then the valves were randomly assigned into 5 experimental groups and 1 control group （n=16）. For the valves in those experimental groups, branched polyethylene glycol diacrylate （PEG） of 5 different molecular weights （3.4, 8, 12, 20, 40 kDa） were synthesized and cross-linked with them respectively. The efficiency of the cross-linking was determined by measuring the amount of residual thiol group and the mechanical properties of the cross-linked valve leaflets were assessed by uni-axial planar tensile testing. The efficiency of the PEG 20 kDa group was 70.72±2.33%, obviously superior to that of the other groups （p〈0.05）. Tensile test proved that branched PEG cross-linking can significantly enhance the mechanical behaviors of the deeellularized valve leaflet and the Young＇s modulus of each group was positively correlated with the molecular weight of PEG. It was concluded that branched PEG with the molecular weight of 20 kDa can effectively cross-link the decellularized porcine aortic valves and improve their mechanical properties, which makes it a promising cross-linker that can be used in the modification of decellularized tissue engineering valves.
