Comparative carbon emission assessments of recycled and natural aggregate concrete: Environmental influence of cement content

This work examines the environmental and geochemical impact of recycled aggregate concrete production with properties representative for structural applications. The environmental influence of cement content, aggregate production, transportation, and waste landfilling is analysed by undertaking a life cycle assessment and considering a life cycle inventory largely specific for the region. To obtain a detailed insight into the optimum life cycle parameters, a sensitivity study is carried out in which supplementary cementitious materials, different values of natural-to-recycled aggregate content ratio and case-specific transportation distances were considered. The results show that carbon emissions were between 323 and 332 kg CO2e per cubic metre of cement only natural aggregate concrete. These values can be reduced by up to 17% by replacing 25% of the cement with fly ash. By contrast, carbon emissions can increase when natural coarse aggregates are replaced by recycled aggregates in proportions of 50% and 100%, and transportation is not included in analysis. However, the concrete with 50% recycled aggregate presented lower increase, only 0.3% and 3.4% for normal and high strength concrete, respectively. In some cases, the relative contribution of transportation to the total carbon emissions increased when cement was replaced by fly ash in proportions of 25%, and case-specific transportation distances were considered. In absolute values, the concrete mixes with 100% recycled aggregates and 25% fly ash had lower carbon emissions than concrete with cement and natural aggregates only. Higher environmental benefits can be obtained when the transportation distances of fly ash are relatively short(15–25 km) and the cement replacement by fly ash is equal or higher than 25%, considering that the mechanical properties are adequate for practical application. The observations from this paper show that recycled aggregate concrete with strength characteristics representative for structural members can have lower carbon emission

Mapping the Genetic Diversity of Castanea sativa: Exploiting Spatial Analysis for Biogeography and Conservation Studies

The current distribution of forest tree species is a result of natural or human mediated historical and contemporary processes. Knowledge of the spatial distribution of the diversity and divergence of populations is crucial for managing and conserving genetic resources in forest tree species. By combining tools from population genetics, landscape ecology and spatial statistics, landscape genetics thus represents a powerful method for evaluating the geographic patterns of genetic resources at the population level. In this study, we explore the possibility of combining genetic diversity data, spatial statistic tools and GIS technologies to map the genetic divergence and diversity of 31 Castanea sativa populations collected in Spain, Italy, Greece, and Turkey. The IDW technique was used to interpolate the diversity values and divergence indices as expected hetereozygosity (He), allelic richness (Rs), private allelic richness (PRs), and membership values (Q) of each population to different clusters. Genetic diversity maps and a synthetic map of the spatial genetic structure of European chestnut populations were produced. Spatial coincidences between landscape elements and statistically significant genetic discontinuities between populations were investigated. Evidence is provided of the significance of cartographic outputs produced in the study and on their usefulness in managing genetic resources.

dehydration of Agro Products in a Hybrid Solar Dryer Controlled through a Fuzzy Logic System

Drying is one of the most energy-intensive processes in agro-products industry. For this reason, using solar energy appears as an attractive not polluting alternative to be used in drying processes. However, the daily and seasonal fluctuations in the radiation level require using energy accumulators with phase change materials (paraffin wax), to have a continuous drying processes. In hybrid solar dryers with energy accumulation system, a control system is essential to coordinate the control valves that allow the income of air that comes from the solar panel or from the energy accumulator. In this work, we implemented an advances multivariable control system that uses fuzzy logic in the hybrid solar dryer. The dryer includes an energy accumulator panel with paraffin wax as phase change material. The input variables were ambient temperature and solar radiation, both not controllable. The controlled variables were the opening level of the solar panel and accumulator energy valves. The control program consisted in an algorithm implemented with the “Fuzzy” toolbox in Matlab. Data were acquired with OPTO 22. The control system performed adequately when used to dehydrate mushroom slices and plums. Closing or opening the respective valves as a response to the variations of solar radiation and ambient air temperature allowed optimizing the use of solar energy.

As-cast and extruded Mg-Zn-Ca systems for biodegradable implants:Characterization and corrosion behavior

The aim of the present study is to evaluate the effect of alloy processing and composition as well as the pH control and testing medium on the in vitro corrosion performance of Mg-Zn-Ca systems for biodegradable implants.The grain size and secondary phases were analyzed by optical microscopy,scanning electron microscopy,transmission electron microscopy,and X-ray diffraction.Scanning kelvin probe force microscopy(SKPFM)was used to analyze the Volta potential values of the second phases.The corrosion performance of the three alloys was evaluated by electrochemical and hydrogen evolution methods inα-MEM with and without organic species(i.***.complete and inorganicα-MEM).Two strategies were followed to evaluate the influence of the pH on the corrosion behavior:daily solution replacement and CO_(2)flow based pH control.For all the materials,the organic medium accelerates the corrosion process.Constant pH maintained by CO_(2)flow through the medium results in considerably higher corrosion rates for all alloys.The impact of pH is lesser on the as-cast alloys due to the barrier effect of the secondary phases,particularly pronounced in the Mg1Zn1Ca alloy which showed the lowest corrosion rate.The wrought Mg0.5Zn0.2Ca alloy that lacks the refined secondary phase network and exhibits high number of twins undergoes accelerated uniform corrosion under constant pH conditions.

In this work hollow rectangular microtubes of polypyrrole(PPy)films were potentiostatically electrodeposited on magnesium alloy AZ91D in salicylate solution.The substrate was previously anodized under potentiostatic conditions in a molybdate solution in order to improve the adherence of polymer.Finally the duplex film was modified by the incorporation of silver species.The obtained coatings were characterized by scanning electron microscopy(SEM),X-ray diffraction(XRD)and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopies(XPS)and the antimicrobial activity against the bacteria Escherichia coli was evaluated.The corrosion protection properties of the coatings were examined in Ringer solution by monitoring the open circuit potential,polarization techniques and electrochemical spectroscopy(EIS).The duplex coating presents an improved anticorrosive performance with respect to the PPy film.The best results concerning corrosion protection and antibacterial activity were obtained for the silver-modified composite coating.

A new technique for separation of partial discharge sources and electromagnetic noise in radiofrequency measurements using energy ratios of different antennas

One of the main tools for monitoring the condition of high voltage equipment is the measurement of partial discharges(PD).The electromagnetic(EM)radiation originated from this degradation phenomenon can be captured by various types of ultra‐high fre-quency(UHF)antennas carefully designed and optimised for specific frequency bands.However,the presence of environmental noise may limit the use of this technique.Different types of monopole antennas normally used in UHF PD measurement have been evaluated in order to validate the performance of a novel separation technique of EM sources.Accordingly,a new separation technique based on the energy ratio of the captured signals was developed,considering noise interferences.The results revealed that the new technique allows an adequate separation,even when three sources act simultaneously.
