Prey availability, prey selection, and trophic niche width in the lizard Psammodromus algirus along an elevational gradient

Mountains imply enormous environmental variation, with alpine habitats entailing harsh environ- ments, especially for ectotherms such as lizards. This environmental variability also may imply variation in prey availability. However, little is known about how lizard trophic ecology varies with elevation. In this study, we analyze diet, prey availability, prey selection, and trophic niche width in the lacertid lizard Psammodromus algirus along a 2,200-m elevational gradient in the Sierra Nevada （Se Spain）. The analysis of fecal samples has shown that Orthoptera, Formicidae, Hemiptera, Coleoptera, and Araneae are the main prey, although, according to their abundance in pitfall traps, Formicidae and Coleoptera are rejected by the lizard whereas Orthoptera, Hemiptera, and Araneae are preferred. Prey abundance and diversity increase with elevation and diet subtly varies along with the elevational gradient. The consumption of Coleoptera increases with elevation probably as a consequence of the lizard foraging more in open areas while basking. The electivity for Araneae increases with elevation. Araneae are rejected in the lowlands--where they are rela- tively abundant--whereas, at high elevation, this lizard positively selects them, despite they being less abundant. The lizard trophic niche width expands with elevation due to concomitant greater prey diversity and hence this lizard feeds on more prey types in highlands. Although no sex difference in diet has been found, the trophic niche is broader in females than males. As a whole, alpine lizards show a trophic niche simitar to that found at lower elevat（ons, suggesting that P. algirus is well adapted to the harsh environment found in alpine areas.

During social interactions,the behavior of an individual often depends on the sex of its social *** animal societies have males and females that play very different behavioral roles,although they coexist and interact *** specific phases of the colony cycle,social wasp females and males are contemporaries within a nest,they often interact,although mating occurs mostly off the nest,therefore providing an opportunity to test sex discrimination in contexts other than classical sexual *** performed a lure presentation experiment to test if Mischocyttarus metathoracicus discriminate between conspecifics of the 2 sexes during on-nest social *** wasps discriminated conspecific sex during experimentally simulated nest *** and chemical cues may account for this sex *** sex discrimination(evidenced by differential inspective behavior from the nest females toward the female and the male lures),female wasps were as aggressive toward lures of both *** the female-dominated hymenopteran societies,males are often subordinate and not aggressive on nest,resulting in females directing less aggression to them compared to other ***,*** males and females are both aggressive toward nestmates,so they might be perceived as similar threat during on-nest social interactions.

Boron （B） is an essential nutrient for normal growth of higher plants, and B availability in soil and irrigation water is an important determinant of agricultural production. To date, a primordial function of B is undoubtedly its structural role in the ceil wall; however, there is increasing evidence for a possible role of B in other processes such as the maintenance of plasma membrane function and several metabolic pathways. In recent years, the knowledge of the molecular basis of B deficiency and toxicity responses in plants has advanced greatly. The aim of this review is to provide an update on recent findings related to these topics, which can contribute to a better understanding of the role of B in plants.

We focus our attention to the set Gr（ξ） of grouplike elements of a coring ξover a ring A. We do some observations on the actions of the groups U（A） and Aut（ξ~） of units of A and of automorphisms of corings of ξ, respectively, on Gr（ξ）, and on the subset Gal（ξ）of all Galois grouplike elements. Among them, we give conditions on ξ under which Gal（ξ） is a group, in such a way that there is an exact sequence of groups {1} → U（Ag） → U（A） → Gal（ξ） → {1}, where Ag is the subalgebra of coinvaxiants for some g ∈ Gal（ξ）.

Modeling egg development of the pest Clavipalpus ursinus （Coleoptera： Melolonthidae） using a temperature-dependent approach

Predicting the population dynamics of insects in natural conditions is es- sential for their management or preservation, and temperature-dependent development models contribute to achieving this. In this research the effects of temperature and soil moisture content on egg development and hatching of Clavipalpus ursinus （Blanchard） were evaluated. The eggs were exposed to seven temperature treatments with averages of 7.2, 13.0, 15.5, 19.7, 20.6, 22.0 and 25.3~C, in combination with three soil moisture contents of 40%, 60% and 80%. A linear and two non-linear （Lactin and Briere） models were evaluated in order to determine the thermal requirements of this developmental stage. Temperature affected significantly the time of development and egg hatching, while no significant effect was observed for moisture content. Thermal requirements were set as： 7.2℃ for lower developmental threshold, 20.6℃ for optimum developmental threshold, 25.3℃ for maximum temperature and 344.83 degree-days for the thermal constant. The linear model described satisfactorily egg development at intermediate temperatures; nev- ertheless, a slightly better fit of the observed data was obtained with the Lactin model. egg development took place inside a narrow range of temperatures. Consequently, an increment of soil temperature could generate a negative impact on the population size of this species or changes in its biological parameters.

Alluvial sedimentation and tectonostratigraphic evolution in a narrow extensional zigzag basin margin (northern Teruel Basin, Spain)

The northern part of the eastern margin of the extensional Neogene Teruel Basin(central-eastern Spain)consists of a non-linear,zigzag fault zone made of alternating ca.2 km long,NNW-SSe trending segments and shorter NNeSSW *** outcrop conditions made possible a comprehensive integrated stratigraphic and structural study,especially focused on coarse clastic sediments deposited along the basin ***-exposed stratal relationships with boundary faults,allowed the analysis of tectonic influence on *** deformation includes growth faulting,rollover anticlines,and monoclines and associated onlap stratal terminations,angular unconformities,and other complex growth strata *** of them is the onlap-over-rollover bed arrangement described here for the first time,which reveals the competition between tectonic subsidence and sedimentary ***,the structural inheritance(dense Mesozoic fracture grid)and the dominant,nearly‘multidirectional’(σ1 vertical,σ2≈σ3),Pliocene extensional regime withσ3 close to e-W,are considered to have controlled the margin structure and ***-stratigraphic evolution includes:(i)reactivation of inherited NNW-SSe faults and development of W-SW-directed small alluvial fans(SAF)while NNe-SSW segments acted as gentle relay ramp zones;(ii)progressive activation of NNe-SSW faults and development of NW-directed very small alluvial fans(VSAF);during stages i and ii sediments were trapped close to the margin,avoiding widespread progradation;(iii)linking of NNW-SSe and NNe-SSW structural segments,overall basin sinking and widespread alluvial progradation;(iv)fault activity attenuation and alluvial *** particular structure and kinematic evolution of this margin controlled alluvial system *** of alluvial fans,directly set up at the border faults,was conditioned by the narrowness of the margin,small catchment areas,and proximity between faults,which prevented the development of l
