In many electrical grids worldwide, the rising amount of installed PV （photovoltaic） power entails a considerable influence of PV systems on grid quality and stability. Consequently, in the wake of the revised German medium voltage directives issued in 2009, new requirements for PV inverters have been established internationally. At Fraunhofer IsE＇s Inverter Laboratory, approximately 25 large PV inverters with a nominal power of up to 880 kVA have been characterized in the past three years. In this period, the focus of many inverter manufacturers has begun to shift from traditional European markets towards an international perspective. Therefore, experiences with numerous different grid codes have been gained by our team. This work summarizes the similarities and differences between these grid codes. Additionally, several requirements that have proved to be critical will be examined. Finally, the adequacy of these grid codes to guarantee the safe and reliable operation of electrical grids is discussed.

A second-order compensation link is adopted to control voltage-controlled inverters(VCIs) in microgrid systems to enhance the performance of the power synchronization process of the inverter. The second-order compensation link is classified as both a real pole compensator(RPC) and a complex pole compensator(CPC) according to the pole position. Given a model for the VCI power output, the design process for the second-order compensation link, which is equipped with an RPC and a CPC, is detailed. Moreover, the frequency-domain compensation effects of the RPC and CPC are analyzed using the root locus and Bode diagrams of the system before and after compensation. Finally, the compensation effects of the two types of second-order compensators are compared with the commonly used high-pass filter using MATLAB/simulink, which verifies the RPC and CPC strategies. simulation results show that the two types of compensators designed in this study can effectively increase the system cutting frequency and improve the phase margin in the frequency domain while accelerating the power synchronization process, simultaneously making it smoother and reducing overshoot in the time domain. The RPC has better gain robustness, whereas the CPC has better time constant robustness. By implementing an RPC or a CPC, the dynamic time of the power synchronization compensation strategy is reduced within 0.5 s, and the overshoot is reduced within 10% in the experiments with two inverters.

Active damped LCL-filter-based inverters have been widely used for grid-connected distributed generation(DG) systems. In weak grids, however, the phase-locked loop(PLL) dynamics may detrimentally affect the stability of grid-connected inverters due to interaction between the PLL and the controller. In order to solve the problem, the impact of PLL dynamics on small-signal stability is investigated for the active damped LCL-filtered grid-connected inverters with capacitor voltage feedback. The system closed-loop transfer function is established based on the Norton equivalent model by taking the PLL dynamics into account. Using an established model, the system stability boundary is identified from the viewpoint of PLL bandwidth and current regulator gain. The accuracy of the ranges of stability for the PLL bandwidth and current regulator gain is verified by both simulation and experimental results.

The purpose of the paper is to develop a solution for application of PV （photovoltaic） generators in MV （medium voltage） distribution system without unacceptable voltage changes due to drops of PV power output. The proposed solution includes operation of PV with predetermined leading power factor and addition of a capacitor bank in parallel to PV plant in order to compensate the reactive power absorbed by the PV inverters. The analytical expression of required power factor angle is derived. Adding a capacitor bank in parallel to PV power plant may pose a problem because of space limitations. The dimensions and cost of small MV capacitor banks depend significantly on the capacitor bank protection against internal faults. Application of the developed negative-sequence current difference method for the unbalance protection of the capacitor banks enables to achieve a compact and cost-reduced design of the banks connected in parallel to PV power plants. A real-world example of operation of the PV plant in parallel to the capacitor bank with the novel protection scheme is described.
