Prediction of solar activities: Sunspot numbers and solar magnetic synoptic maps

The evolution of solar magnetic fields is significant for understanding and predicting solar activities. And our knowledge of solar magnetic fields largely depends on the photospheric magnetic field. In this paper, based on the spherical harmonic expansion of the photospheric magnetic field observed by Wilcox Solar Observatory, we analyze the time series of spherical harmonic coefficients and predict Sunspot Number as well as synoptic maps for Solar Cycle 25. We find that solar maximum years have complex short-period disturbances, and the time series of coefficient g7～0 is nearly in-phase with Sunspot Number, which may be related to solar meridional circulation. Utilizing Long Short-Term Memory networks（LSTM）, our prediction suggests that the maximum of Solar Cycle 25 is likely to occur in June 2024 with an error of 8 months, the peak sunspot number may be 166.9±22.6, and the next solar minimum may occur around January 2031. By incorporating Empirical Mode Decomposition, we enhance our forecast of synoptic maps truncated to Order 5, validating their relative reliability. This prediction not only addresses a gap in forecasting the global distribution of the solar magnetic field but also holds potential reference value for forthcoming solar observation plans.

Mountains are rich in biodiversity,and butterflies are species-rich and have a good ecological and evolutionary research foundation.This review addresses the potential and progress of studying mountain biodiversity using butterflies as a model.We discuss the uniqueness of mountain ecosystems,factors influencing the distribution of mountain butterflies,representative genetic and evolutionary models in butterfly research,and evolutionary studies of mountain biodiversity involving butterfly genetics and genomics.Finally,we demonstrate the necessity of studying mountain butterflies and propose future perspectives.This review provides insights for studying the biodiversity of mountain butterflies as well as a summary of research methods for reference.

Oxygen is crucial in influencing the microstructure evolution of selective laser melted(SLMed)Ti–6Al–4V,significantly impacting its applicability in various sectors.Therefore,this study investigates the influnce of oxygen on microstructure evolution,particularlyα′martensite transformation and refinement mechanisms.Four alloys,Ti–6Al–4V–xO(x=0.11,0.16,0.21,and 0.25 wt%),were fabricated by the SLM process.The martensite start temperature(M_(s))of Ti–6Al–4V,as evaluated by computation,is 656.8°C,and oxygen was found to increase the M_(s) by about 10°C per 0.1 wt%.The SLMed alloy samples exhibit[001]_(β)growth texture along the build direction.Crystallographic analysis of martensite morphology suggests internal twinning on{1011}planes as the lattice invariant strain,which becomes more predominant with increasing oxygen content.Refinement of α′martensite plates by oxygen is due to increased lattice distortion,reduced prior β grain size,and oxygen segregation toβgrain boundaries.Our findings contribute to improving the understanding of the effect of oxygen on the transformation mechanism ofα′martensite during SLM of Ti–6Al–4V.

Polaron interfacial entropy as a route to high thermoelectric performance in DAE-doped PEDOT:PSS films

Enhancing the thermoelectric transport properties of conductive polymer materials has been a long-term challenge, in spite of the success seen with molecular doping strategies. However, the strong coupling between the thermopower and the electrical conductivity limits thermoelectric performance. Here, we use polaron interfacial occupied entropy engineering to break through this intercoupling for a PEDOT:PSS(poly（3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene）-poly（4-styrenesulfonate）) thin film by using photochromic diarylethene（DAE） dopants coupled with UV-light modulation. With a 10-fold enhancement of the thermopower from 13.5 μV K-1to 135.4 μV K-1and almost unchanged electrical conductivity, the DAE-doped PEDOT:PSS thin film achieved an extremely high power factor of 521.28 μW m-1K-2from an original value of 6.78 μW m-1K-2. The thermopower was positively correlated with the UV-light intensity but decreased with increasing temperature, indicating resonant coupling between the planar closed DAE molecule and PEDOT. Both the experiments and theoretical calculations consistently confirmed the formation of an interface state due to this resonant coupling. Interfacial entropy engineering of polarons could play a critical role in enhancing the thermoelectric performance of the organic film.

Glacier inventories serve as critical baseline data for understanding the impacts of climate change on glaciers.The present study maps the outlines of glaciers in the Chandra-Bhaga Basin(western Himalaya)for the years 1993,2000,2010,and 2019 using Landsat Thematic Mapper(TM),Enhanced Thematic Mapper(ETM),and Operational Land Imager(OLI)datasets.A total of 251 glaciers,each having an area above 0.5 km^(2),were identified,which include 216 clean-ice and 35 debris-covered glaciers.Area changes are estimated for three periods:1993-2000,2000-2010,and 2010-2019.The total glacierized area was 996±62 km^(2) in 1993,which decreased to 973±70 km^(2) in 2019.The mean rate of glacier area loss was higher in the recent decade(2010-2019),at 0.036 km^(2),compared to previous decades(0.029 km^(2) in 2000-2010 and 0.025 km^(2) in 1993-2000).Supraglacial debris cover changes are also mapped over the period of 1993 and 2019.It is found that the supraglacial debris cover increased by 14.12±2.54 km^(2)(15.2%)during 1993-2019.Extensive field surveys on Chhota Shigri,Panchi II,Patsio,Hamtah,Mulkila,and Yoche Lungpa glaciers were carried out to validate the glacier outlines and supraglacial debris cover estimated using satellite datasets.Controls of various morphological parameters on retreat were also analyzed.It is observed that small,clean ice,south oriented glaciers,and glaciers with proglacial lakes are losing area at faster rates than other glaciers in the basin.

Sexual and reproductive health(SRH) services are crucial for women especially during disasters, to reduce maternal mortality and morbidity from miscarriages, unsafe abortions, and post-abortion complications. This study explored the SRH interventions provided during disaster response. A systematic review was conducted to identify what menstrual regulation(MR), safe abortion(SA), and post-abortion care(PAC) approaches/interventions exist to promote resilience in the health system in disaster settings; what intervention components were most eff ective; and challenges and opportunities to meeting SRH rights. Five electronic databases were searched, resulting in 4194 records. Following the screening process, seven publications were included. The intervention-related information in each publication was assessed based on availability,accessibility, acceptability, and quality. Two SRH approaches/interventions were found. The eff ectiveness of intervention components could not be conducted due to the limited number of relevant studies. Challenges were found at facility and community levels, and opportunities included overcoming them, making MR, SA, and PAC integral to the mitigation phase,and policy change to overcome barriers related to unaff ordability and inaccessibility. Recommendations are provided to encourage research and policy towards improving neglected SRH in disaster settings to realize Sustainable Development Goal 3 and the Global Strategy and Sendai Framework's priority to promote disaster-resilient health systems.

Photobiomodulation:a novel approach to promote trans-differentiation of adipose-derived stem cells into neuronal-like cells

Photobiomodulation,originally used red and near-infrared lasers,can alter cellular metabolism.It has been demonstrated that the visible spectrum at 451-540 nm does not necessarily increase cell proliferation,near-infrared light promotes adipose stem cell proliferation and affects adipose stem cell migration,which is necessary for the cells homing to the site of injury.In this in vitro study,we explored the potential of adipose-derived stem cells to differentiate into neurons for future translational regenerative treatments in neurodegenerative disorders and brain injuries.We investigated the effects of various biological and chemical inducers on trans-differentiation and evaluated the impact of photobiomodulation using 825 nm near-infrared and 525 nm green laser light at 5 J/cm2.As adipose-derived stem cells can be used in autologous grafting and photobiomodulation has been shown to have biostimulatory effects.Our findings reveal that adipose-derived stem cells can indeed trans-differentiate into neuronal cells when exposed to inducers,with pre-induced cells exhibiting higher rates of proliferation and trans-differentiation compared with the control group.Interestingly,green laser light stimulation led to notable morphological changes indicative of enhanced trans-differentiation,while near-infrared photobiomodulation notably increased the expression of neuronal markers.Through biochemical analysis and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays,we observed marked improvements in viability,proliferation,membrane permeability,and mitochondrial membrane potential,as well as increased protein levels of neuron-specific enolase and ciliary neurotrophic factor.Overall,our results demonstrate the efficacy of photobiomodulation in enhancing the trans-differentiation ability of adipose-derived stem cells,offering promising prospects for their use in regenerative medicine for neurodegenerative disorders and brain injuries.

Background:There is mounting evidence that regular physical activity is an important prerequisite for healthy cognitive aging.Consequently,the finding that almost one-third of the adult population does not reach the recommended level of regular physical activity calls for further public health actions.In this context,digital and home-based physical training interventions might be a promising alternative to center-based intervention programs.Thus,this systematic review aimed to summarize the current state of the literature on the effects of digital and home-based physical training interventions on adult cognitive performance.Methods:In this pre-registered systematic review(PROSPERO;ID:CRD42022320031),5 electronic databases(PubMed,Web of Science,Psyclnfo,SPORTDiscus,and Cochrane Library)were searched by 2 independent researchers(FH and PT)to identify eligible studies investigating the effects of digital and home-based physical training interventions on cognitive performance in adults.The systematic literature search yielded 8258 records(extra17 records from other sources),of which 27 controlled trials were considered relevant.Two reviewers(FH and PT)independently extracted data and assessed the risk of bias using a modified version of the Tool for the assEssment of Study qualiTy and reporting in EXercise(TESTEX scale).Results:Of the 27 reviewed studies,15 reported positive effects on cognitive and motor-cognitive outcomes(i.e.,performance improvements in measures of executive functions,working memory,and choice stepping reaction test),and a considerable heterogeneity concerning study-related,population-related,and intervention-related characteristics was noticed.A more detailed analysis suggests that,in particular,interventions using online classes and technology-based exercise devices(i.e.,step-based exergames)can improve cognitive performance in healthy older adults.Approximately one-half of the reviewed studies were rated as having a high risk of bias with respect to completion adherence(≤85%)and monitoring of t

The influence of proxy selection on global annual mean temperature reconstructions during the Common Era

The reconstruction of global annual mean temperatures made by the PAGES 2k Consortium in 2019 represents one of the most influential sequences of global climate variability over the Common Era. However, it is still not clear how the reconstruction can be influenced by the selection of reconstruction methods and the selection of proxy records with different temporal resolutions over different regions. We adopt a widely used Composite-Plus-Scale method to elucidate the effects of the selection of the proxy records on temperature reconstruction. To ensure the uniformity of data, different types of proxy records spanning the past ～2000 years from the PAGES 2k proxy network were used to investigate the potential effects of proxy selection in hemispheric and global temperature reconstructions during the past two millennia. The long-term trends, spectral characteristics, and volcanic responses of the annual temperatures were studied based on the reconstructions. Our results reveal a significant cooling trend in the global annual mean temperature using both tree-ring and non-tree-ring records during the 1–1850CE period, and show that the cooling exhibits a stronger trend in the Southern Hemisphere(SH) than that in the Northern Hemisphere(NH). Yet, the long-term trends vary according to different combinations of proxy records. Different reconstructions based on different types of proxies also exhibit different features in terms of volcanic responses and spectral properties. Tree-ring-based temperature reconstructions show stronger cooling responses to tropical volcanic eruptions, while non-tree-ring-based reconstructions suggest less robust volcanic responses, which may be related to dating uncertainties and low temporal resolution of the proxies. To investigate the role of co-stimulatory and co-inhibitory molecules on immune tolerance in immune thrombocytopenia(ITP),this study mapped the immune cell heterogeneity in the bone marrow of ITP at the single-cell level using Cytometry by Time of Flight(Cy TOF).Thirty-six patients with ITP and nine healthy volunteers were enrolled in the study.As soluble immunomodulatory molecules,more s CD25 and s Galectin-9 were detected in ITP patients.On the cell surface,co-stimulatory molecules like ICOS and HVEM were observed to be upregulated in mainly central memory and effector T cells.In contrast,co-inhibitory molecules such as CTLA-4 were significantly reduced in Th1and Th17 cell subsets.Taking a platelet count of 30×109L-1as the cutoff value,ITP patients with high and low platelet counts showed different T cell immune profiles.Antigen-presenting cells such as monocytes and B cells may regulate the activation of T cells through CTLA-4/CD86 and HVEM/BTLA interactions,respectively,and participate in the pathogenesis of ITP.In conclusion,the proteomic and soluble molecular profiles brought insight into the interaction and modulation of immune cells in the bone marrow of ITP.They may offer novel targets to develop personalized immunotherapies.
