White grubs, Holotrichia rustica and Holotrichia mucida （Coleoptera： Scarabaeidae） as pests of teak （Tectona grandis L. f.） seedlings

Field observations were carried out between 2002 and 2005 on bio-ecology of white grubs infesting teak （Tectona grandis Linn. f.） seedlings at Ramdongari Forest Nursery, Forest Development Corporation of Maharashtra, Nagpur in central India. The study collected the data required for an integrated pest management strategy against the white grubs. The species damaging teak seedlings were Holotrichia rustica （Burmeister） and H. mucida Gyllenhal. The beetles （adults） of both these species began to emerge just after the pre-monsoon showers and when the relative humidity had risen rapidly over several days, but before the first monsoon rains. While the adults fed and mated on naturally growing bushes of Ziziphus jujuba, Z mauritiana, Z. xylopyra, Acacia leucophloea and A. catechu immediately after the emergence from the teak beds in the nursery, the immature stages （grubs） of both species fed on roots of the teak seedling, leading to plant death. This is the first report of （i） damage caused to teak seedlings by grubs ofH. rustica and H. mucida, and （ii） of *** and Z. mauritiana being hosts for the beetles ofH. mucida and H, rustica. It is also the first detailed report on the field bio-ecology of the H. rustica and H. mucida as major pests ofteak. White grubs are among the toughest-to-manage pests of economic importance and information presented here on the pest incidence and damage ofH. rustica and H. mucida is important to researchers and nursery field managers for the management of these pests on teak.

The consumption of non-renewable resources and the creation of wastes have been identified as among the key issues that our society must address in order not to prejudice the opportunities of future *** the way we design and construct our buildings leads to huge volumes of waste being generated as well as the use of large amounts of materials,the extraction of which leads to considerable environmental ***,how can we design buildings in a way that creates closed loop materials systems that minimize waste generation and primary resourse use?The objective of this paper is to review work carried out at Ryerson University in Canada funded by NRCan and CISC to identify ways in which construction can set up reuse loops for steel components so that waste and the demand for primary steel are *** particular,the design and construction issues related to the use of salvaged steel components will be reviewed,through a series of case studies to draw out lessons and conclusions about the implications of component reuse in *** case studies are of projects that reuse steel components from old buildings into new *** suggest that opportunities for steel reuse are significant but the industry needs to establish appropriate structures and cyclical systems and methods to ensure that components can be easily reclaimed from old buildings for ***,certain ingrained industry design processes need to be overcome for reuse of steel(and other components)to become more acceptable.

PROMOTING SILTATION EFFECTS AND IMPACTS OF HENGSHA EAST SHOAL ON THE YANGTZE RIVER ESTUARY

For the Hengsha East Shoal Promoting Siltation Project in the Yangtze River Estuary, this work developed a formula for calculating sediment carrying capacity based on variable coefficients and a mathematical model for suspended sedimentation using variable saturation recovery coefficients. Not only does the model yield good verification, preferably give the hydrodynamics and the sediment concentration, but also reach a good agreement between the simulation results andlux by tide for studying the effect the measured topographical changes in the promoting siltation zone of the Hengsha East Shoal. Moreover, this article proposes a method for examing the net sediment tran- sportation fs of the project of promoting siltation and comparatively analyzes the current siltation of the Hengsha East Shoal and siltation mouth layouts, entrance widths, entrance bottom elevations, and the impact of the South Main Dike on promoting siltation through calculating the net sediment transportation flux by tide over the fixed bed and the direct movable bed numerical simulations. The results are in good agreement with each other, indicating that the method for calculating the net sedi- ment transportation flux by the tide is also useful for assessing the project in promoting siltation. Finally, we use the modeling results to analyze the water and sediment diversion ratios and the changes in silting and scouting in riverbeds and draw the conclusion that the completion of the Hengsha East Shoal Promoting Siltation Project would not adversely affect the Yangtze River Estuary Deepwater Channel Project.

Measuring Whitespace Pattern Sequences as an Indication of Plagiarism

There are several methods and technologies for comparing the statements, comments, strings, identifiers, and other visible elements of source code in order to efficiently identify similarity. In a prior paper we found that comparing the whitespace patterns was not precise enough to identify copying by itself. However, several possible methods for improving the precision of a whitespace pattern comparison were presented, the most promising of which was an examination of the sequences of lines with matching whitespace patterns. This paper demonstrates a method of evaluating the sequences of matching whitespace patterns and a detailed study of the method’s reliability.

A case study on the efficacy of different roof bolting schemes in Lhoist North America’s Crab Orchard Mine

Roof bolting has long been used in underground mines across the world to provide ground *** roof bolts are cheap and easy to install with the use of specialized machines as a part of the production cycle. Lhoist North America’s Crab Orchard Mine is an underground room and pillar limestone mine that uses mechanically anchored roof bolts for ground support. The mine currently employs two different roof bolting patterns: a standard 1.5 × 1.5 m pattern, and another 0.8 × 0.8 m pattern for use in areas with particularly hazardous roof conditions. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the relative effectiveness of each bolting pattern. A series of numerical models were created using Roc Science’s RS2. The models were based on a symmetrical section of the mine at its deepest point, and were modeled using generalized Hoek-Brown failure criterion along with a discrete fracture network. A series of sensitivity analyses were performed on the models by varying parameters such as joint friction angle, crack persistence, joint randomization, and tensile strength of the limestone. Based on the results of the original models and sensitivity analyses, it appeared that the standard bolting pattern provided sufficient roof support capacity under almost all the expected conditions at the mine, since safety factors below the design value of 1.5 were only found for individual bolts in a few of the worst test cases *** results can help improve the mine’s productivity and reduce operating costs without compromising safety.

Remaining useful life prediction of lithium-ion batteries using a fusion method based on Wasserstein GAN

Lithium-ion batteries are the main power supply equipment in many fields due to their advantages of no memory, high energy density, long cycle life and no pollution to the environment. Accurate prediction for the remaining useful life(RUL) of lithium-ion batteries can avoid serious economic and safety problems such as spontaneous combustion. At present, most of the RUL prediction studies ignore the lithium-ion battery capacity recovery phenomenon caused by the rest time between the charge and discharge cycles. In this paper, a fusion method based on Wasserstein generative adversarial network(GAN) is proposed. This method achieves a more reliable and accurate RUL prediction of lithium-ion batteries by combining the artificial neural network(ANN) model which takes the rest time between battery charging cycles into account and the empirical degradation models which provide the correct degradation trend. The weight of each model is calculated by the discriminator in the Wasserstein GAN model. Four data sets of lithium-ion battery provided by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration(NASA) Ames Research Center are used to prove the feasibility and accuracy of the proposed method.

Floods affect more people globally than any other type of natural hazard. Great potential exists for new technologies to support flood disaster risk reduction. In addition to existing expert-based data collection and analysis, direct input from communities and citizens across the globe may also be used to monitor, validate, and reduce flood risk. New technologies have already been proven to effectively aid in humanitarian response and recovery. However, while ex-ante technologies are increasingly utilized to collect information on exposure, efforts directed towards assessing and monitoring hazards and vulnerability remain limited. Hazard model validation and social vulnerability assessment deserve particular attention. New technologies offer great potential for engaging people and facilitating the coproduction of knowledge.

On the calibration of the parameters governing the PWRI distributed hydrological model for flood prediction

The Public Works Research Institute Distributed Hydrological(PWRI-DH)for flood modeling is a combination of the tank model and the kinematic wave *** the PWRI-DH model,fitting the required parameters plays a fundamental *** developers of the PWRI-DH model have introduced the capability of obtaining parameters automatically using the baseline parameters;however,the results are not always the expected results because they depend on several factors and must be calibrated *** last issue has limited the interest of researchers regarding in the usage of the PWRI-DH *** this paper,we present a methodology to obtain the parameters required for the PWRI-DH model that enables to focusing only on the key ***,a parametric study is performed by identifying the influence of each parameter in the *** this study,we found that only four parameters play a fundamental role in the flood modeling using the PWRI-DH *** flood events in the Upper Aikawa River basin are used to calibrate the *** results showed that the proposed methodology is suitable and improve the efficient on the flood simulation of Aikawa River and similar rivers,when using the PWRI-DH model.

Thermo economic evaluation of oxy fuel combustion cycle in Kazeroon power plant considering enhanced oil recovery revenues

Oxy fuel combustion and conventional cycle(currently working cycle) in Kazeroon plant are modeled using commercial thermodynamic modeling software. Economic evaluation of the two models regarding the resources of transport and injection of carbon dioxide into oil fields at Gachsaran for enhanced oil recovery in the various oil price indices is conducted and indices net present value(NPV) and internal rate of return on investment(IRR) are calculated. The results of the two models reveal that gross efficiency of the oxy fuel cycle is more than reference cycle(62% compared to 49.03%), but the net efficiency is less(41.85% compared to 47.92%) because of the high-energy consumption of the components, particularly air separation unit(ASU) in the oxy fuel cycle. In this model, pure carbon dioxide with pressure of 20×105 Pa and purity of 96.84% was captured. NOX emissions also decrease by 4289.7 tons per year due to separation of nitrogen in ASU. In this model, none of the components of oxy fuel cycle is a major engineering challenge. With increasing oil price, economic justification of oxy fuel combustion model increases. With the price of oil at $ 80 per barrel in mind and $ 31 per ton fines for emissions of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, IRR is the same for both models.
