due to the lack of a uniform and accurate defi-nition of‘drought’,several indicators have been introduced based on different variables and methods,and the efficiency of each of these is determined according to their relationship with drought.The relationship between two drought indices,SPI(standardized precipitation index)and SPEI(standard-ized precipitation-evapotranspiration index)in different sea-sons was investigated using annual rings of 15 tree samples to determine the effect of drought on the growth of oriental beech(Fagus orientalis Lipsky)in the Hyrcanian forests of northern Iran.The different evapotranspiration calcula-tion methods were evaluated on SPEI efficiency based on Hargreaves-Samani,Thornthwaite,and Penman-Monteith methods using the step-by-step M5 decision tree regression method.The results show that SPEI based on the Penman-Monteith in a three-month time scale(spring)had similar temporal changes and a better relationship with annual tree rings(R^(2)=0.81)at a 0.05 significant level.Abrupt change and a decreasing trend in the time series of annual tree rings are similar to the variation in the SPEI based on the Penman-Monteith method.Factors affecting evapotranspiration,temperature,wind speed,and sunshine hours(used in the Penman-Monteith method),increased but precipitation decreased.Using non-linear modeling methods,SPEI based on Penman-Monteith best illustrated climate changes affecting tree growth.

Understanding the habitat shifting pattern is a prerequisite for implementing in situ conservation of migratory species.Spotted seals(Phoca largha)inhabiting the Yellow Sea ecoregion(YSE)comprise a small population with independent genes and represent a charismatic flagship species in this region.However,this population has declined by 80%since the 1940s,and increased support from the countries around the YSE is urgently needed to address the potential local extinction risk.A time-series niche model and life-history weighted systematic conservation planning were designed on the basis of a satellite beacon tracking survey(2010–2020)of the YSE population.The results showed clustering and spreading shifting patterns during the breeding and migratory seasons,respectively.The closed-loop migration route formed in the YSE indicated that this population might be geographically isolated from populations in other breeding areas around the world.The conservation priority area(CPA),with an area of 19632 km^(2)(3.58%of the total YSE area),was the most effective response to the potential in situ risk.However,nearly 80%of the CPA was exposed outside the existing marine protected areas(MPAs).Future establishment of MPAs in China should strategically consider the conservation gap identified herein,and it is recommended for Korea’s closed fishing season to be spatially set in the western Korean Peninsula from May to August.This study also exemplified that the lack of temporal information would lead to the dislocation of niche modeling for migratory species represented by spotted seals.Attention should be paid to protecting small and migratory populations in marine biodiversity conservation planning.

The use of territories in border areas is sensitive, unique, and ecologically fragile. A scientific understanding of the transformation of the national territorial space and its ecological and environmental responses is crucial for optimizing spatial patterns and promoting sustainable utilization. This study focused on 45 cities in the land border areas of China and employed techniques such as the land transfer matrix, Theil index, and ecological environment index to explore the spatiotemporal evolution process and eco-environmental effects of territorial space from three dimensions: spatial pattern, structural transformation, and ecological response. The results show that:(1) during the study period, there was an increasing trend in living and production space, along with a decrease in ecological space, and a significant pattern of "one belt, three districts, and multipoints" emerged.(2) In the urbanization process, population growth and industrial agglomeration have led to the transformation and conflict of territorial spaces, with the conversion of ecological spaces into production spaces being the primary form of land-use transformation. Rapid development has resulted in spatial differentiation of the territorial space between regions.(3) during this period, the ecological quality in China's border areas deteriorated, yet the distribution pattern of ecological space remained stable, exhibiting a “high value in the southeast, low value in the northwest” pattern.(4) Improvements and degradation of the ecology coexist in different border areas;transforming agricultural production space into green and potential ecological spaces has positively contributed to enhancing ecological quality. In contrast, converting green ecological space into potential ecological space, agricultural production space, and aquatic ecological space has become a key factor in ecological degradation. Trace elements in atmospheric particulate matter play a significant role in air quality,human health,and biogeochemical cycles.In this study,the trace elements(Ca,Al,K,Fe,Na,Mg,Zn,Pb,Mn,Ti,Cu,Cr,Sr,Ni)in PM2.5samples collected at the summit of Mt.Lushan were analyzed to quantify their abundance,source,transport,and health risks.during the whole sampling period,the major trace elements was Ca,Al,and K.While the trace metals with the lowest concentrations were Sr,Ni,Rb,and Cd.The trace elements were influenced by air mass transport routes,exhibiting an increasing trend of crustal elements in the northwesterly airmass and anthropogenic elements(Zn,Mn,Cu,and Ni)in the easterly air masses.Construction dust,coal+biomass burning,vehicle emission,urban nitrate-rich+urban waste incineration emissions,and soil dust+industry emissions were common sources of PM2.5on Mt.Lushan.different air mass transport routes had various source contribution patterns.These results indicate that trace elements at Mt.Lushan are influenced by regional anthropogenic emissions and monsoon-dominated trace element transport.The total resulting cancer risk value that these elements posed were below the acceptable risk value of 1×10^(-6),while the non-carcinogenic risk value(1.72)was higher than the safety level,suggesting that non-carcinogenic effects due to these trace elements inhalation were likely to occur.Vehicle emission and coal+biomass burning were the common dominant sources of non-cancer risks posed by trace elements at Mt.Lushan.

dendrocalamus brandisii(Munro) Kurz is a sympodial bamboo species with inimitable taste and flavorful shoots. Its rapid growth and use as high-quality material make this bamboo species highly valued for both food processing and wood applications. However, genome information for d. brandisii is lacking, primarily due to its polyploidy and large genome size.Here, we assembled a high-quality genome for hexaploid d. brandisii, which comprises 70chromosomes with a total size of 2,756 Mb,using long-read Hi Fi sequencing. Furthermore,we accurately separated the genome into its three constituent subgenomes. We used Oxford Nanopore Technologies long reads to construct a transcriptomic dataset covering 15 tissues for gene annotation to complement our genome assembly, revealing differential gene expression and post-transcriptional regulation. by integrating metabolome analysis, we unveiled that well-balanced lignin formation, as well as abundant flavonoid and fructose contents,contribute to the superior quality of d. brandisii shoots. Integrating genomic, transcriptomic,and metabolomic datasets provided a solid foundation for enhancing bamboo shoot quality and developing efficient gene-editing techniques. This study should facilitate research on d. brandisii and enhance its use as a food source and wood material by providing crucial genomic resources.

Improving antioxidant activities of water-soluble lignin-carbohydrate complex isolated from wheat stalk through prolonging ball-milling pretreatment and homogeneous extraction

Water-soluble lignin-carbohydrate complex(LCC)rich in polysaccharides exhibits benign in vitro antioxidant activities and distinguishes high biocompatibility from lignin-rich LCC and lignin.However,the antioxidant activity of water-soluble LCCs remains to be improved and its structure-antioxidant relationship is still uncertain.Herein,structurally diversified water-soluble LCCs were isolated under different ball-milling pretreatment durations(4,6,8 h),extraction pathways(ho-mogeneous and heterogeneous),and isolation routines(water extracts and residues after water extraction).Their structures were characterized by wet chemistry,chromatography and spec-troscopies.Antioxidant activities were evaluated by ferric reducing antioxidant power and 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radicals scavenging rate(RdPPH).Results show that altering ball-milling duration and isolation procedures cause varied structures and antioxidant activities of the water-soluble LCCs.Specifically,prolonging ball-milling duration to 8 hours and homogeneous extrac-tion can enhance their antioxidant activity through releasing more phenolic structures and pro-moting the extraction of high-molecular-weight LCCs via reducing mass-transfer resistance,re-spectively.As a result,the RdPPH of water-soluble LCCs reaches up to 97.35%,which is associated with the arabinan content with statistical significance(Pdy provides new insights into the structure-antioxidation relationship of herbaceous LCC as potential antioxidants.

Centennial Analysis of Human Activity Intensity and Associated Historical Events in Heilongjiang River Sino-Russo Watershed

Human activities in a transborder watershed are complex under the influence of domestic policies,international relations,and global events.Understanding the forces driving human activity change is important for the development of transborder watershed.In this study,we used global historical land cover data,the hemeroby index model,and synthesized major historical events to analyze how human activity intensity changed in the Heilongjiang River(Amur River in Russia)watershed(HLRW).The results showed that there was a strong spatial heterogeneity in the variation of human activity intensity in the HLRW over the past century(1900-2016).On the Chinese side,the human activity intensity change shifted from the plain areas for agricultural reclamation to the mountainous areas for timber extraction.On the Russian side,human activity intensity changes mostly concentrated along the Trans-Siberian Railway and the baikal-Amur Mainline.Localized variation of human activity intensity tended to respond to regional events while regionalized variation tends to reflect national policy change or broad international events.The similarities and differences between China and Russia in policies and positions in international events resulted in synchronous and asynchronous changes in human activity intensity.Meanwhile,policy shifts were often confined by the natural features of the watershed.These results reveal the historical origins and fundamental connotations of watershed development and contribute to formulating regional management policies that coordinate population,eco-nomic,social,and environmental activities.

The sustainability of environmental management initiatives,such as watershed management programs,relies on the presence of effective institutions at the watershed level.However,there needs to be more empirical evidence from evaluating the effectiveness of watershed-level institutions.Therefore,this study presents a pioneering effort to evaluate the effectiveness of Nepal’s first watershed conservation committee at the watershed scale,focusing on the case of the Khageri Khola watershed in Central Nepal.The study involved conducting a household survey,key informant interviews,focus group discussions,and field observations to collect and analyze the data.descriptive analysis,index value calculation,and chi-square statistics were then employed to summarize the results regarding local respondents’perceptions of twelve institutional characteristics,their rationalities,and their association with socio-demographic variables.The results reveal that the watershed conservation committee was perceived as performing well in managing the watershed.Specifically,good interaction,appropriate scale,technical,environmental,social,organizational,and government rationality were perceived as highly effective,with an average index value of less than 0.36.In contrast,clarity of objectives and economic rationality showed moderate effectiveness,with an average index value ranging from 0.36 to 0.65.However,the results suggested that adaptiveness,compliance capacity,and financial rationality merit increased attention,intending to improve their performance.Further,the results showed the association of socio-demographics with respondents’perceptions of various indicators of institutional characteristics and their rationalities.Therefore,the study provides valuable insights for policymakers,researchers,and development practitioners charged with designing sustainable and effective programs and institutions.To enhance the effectiveness and sustainability of watershed management programs,we recommend establishing a policy-guided institutional mec

Weather conditions play a pivotal role in embryo development and parental incubation costs,potentially impacting the clutch size and incubation behavior of birds.Understanding these effects is crucial for bird conservation.Reeves’ s Pheasant(Syrmaticus reevesii) is a threatened species endemic to China,which is characterized by female-only incubation.However,there is a lack of information regarding the impact of weather conditions on clutch size and incubation behavior in this species.Using satellite tracking,we tracked 27 wild female Reeves’ s Pheasants from 2020 to 2023 in Hubei Province,China.We explored their clutch size and incubation behavior,as well as their responses to ambient temperature and precipitation.Clutch size averaged 7.75 ±1.36,had an association with average ambient temperature and average daily precipitation during the egglaying period,and was potentially linked to female breeding attempts.Throughout the incubation period,females took an average of 0.73 ±0.46 recesses every 24 h,with an average recess duration of 100.80 ±73.37 min and an average nest attendance of 92.98 ±5.27%.They showed a unimodal recess pattern in which nest departures peaked primarily between 13:00 and 16:00.Furthermore,females rarely left nests when daily precipitation was high.Recess duration and nest attendance were influenced by the interaction between daily mean ambient temperature and daily precipitation,as well as day of incubation.Additionally,there was a positive correlation between clutch size and recess duration.These results contribute valuable insights into the lifehistory features of this endangered species.
