An inductively coupled plasma (ICP) discharge and its etching behaviors for aluminum alloys were investigated in this report. A radio frequency power supply was used for plasma generation. The unique hardware configuration enabled one to control ion energy separately from plasma density. Plasma properties were measured with a Langmuir probe. Electron temperature, plasma potential and plasma density were found to be comparable with those reported from Electron Cyclotron Resonance (ECR) and other types of reactors[1].A mixture of HBr and chlorine gases were used for this aluminum etch study. Experimental matrices were designed with Response Surface Methodology (RSM) to analyze the process trends versus etch parameters, such as source power, bias power and gas composition. An etch rate of 8500A to 9000A per minute was obtained at 5 to 15 mTorr pressure ranges. Anisotropic profiles with high photoresist selectivity (5 to 1) and silicon dioxide selectivity greater than 10 were achieved with HBr addition into chlorine ***-containing chemistry for an aluminum etch in a low pressure ICP discharge showed great potential for use in ULSI fabrication. In addition, the hardware used was very simple and the chamber size was much smaller than other high density plasma sources.

Background cushing＇s disease is a pituitary-dependent type of cushing＇s syndrome. Treatment consists of pituitary surgery or radiotherapy, but the recurrence rate at 10 years is as high as 40%. Adrenalectomy is considered an effective treatment to refractory cushing＇s disease. The objective of this study was to examine the efficacy of laparoscopic adrenalectomy and open adrenalectomy in cushing＇s disease, focusing on reversing the sequelae of hypercortisolism and improving patients＇ quality of life. Methods Forty-three patients （29 women, 14 men） with recurrent cushing＇s disease after transsphenoidal operation underwent laparoscopic （n=32） or open （n=11） adrenalectomy from 2000 to 2008. Surgical results were evaluated for all the 43 patients. Patients completed a follow-up survey, including the short-form 36-item （SF-36） health survey. Results All the 43 patients achieved clinical reversal of hypercortisolism after adrenalectomy. Time to symptom resolution varied from a few weeks to up to 3 years. Most physical changes had resolved by a mean of 8 months after surgery. These conditions were not significantly different between the laparoscopy and open groups. Median length of hospital stay was shorter in the laparoscopy group （4 vs. 9 days; P 〈0.001）. Median follow-up was 48.5 months. Of the 34 （79%） patients available for follow-up, 22 （65%） had adrenocorticotropic hormone levels 〉200 ng/ml and 6 （27%） had clinical Nelson syndrome. Four patients died by 75 months after surgery. Using SF-36, 30 （88%） patients reported they felt their health status was good to excellent compared with 1 year before adrenalectomy; however, they showed significantly lower scores in all the 8 SF-36 parameters compared with the general population. No significant difference emerged in SF-36 scores between the laparoscopy and open groups. THE causes of cushing＇s syndrome are mainly di- vided into adrenocorticotropic hormone （ACTH） dependent and independent. ACTH dependent hypercortisolism represents excess ACTH se-creting by the pituitary or tumor outside the pituitary; and the latter one is also called as ectopic ACTH syndrome. Thorax is the most common location of causative lesions for ectopic ACTH syndrome, and the size of lesion is too small to be detected in some cases.1＇ 2 Cryptococcal pneumonia usually occurs in immunocompromised patients and excess cortisol production can theoretically produce a state of immunodeficiency. Development of cryptococcal pneumonia concomitant with cushing syndrome （CS） was rare. Here, we report a case of pulmonary nodule in a patient with CS differentiated with ectopic ACTH-producing tumor. Crypto- coccal pneumonia was diagnosed followinglung resection.

To the Editor:Cortisol is closely related to hemostasis.[1]In patients with hyperadrenalism,that is,cushing syndrome(CS),a reduction in the activated partial thromboplastin time(APTT),an increased level of coagulation factors,and an increased risk of thrombosis have been repeatedly reported.[1,2]However,no studies reported the hemostatic status of patients with hypoadrenalism which is commonly seen in patients with pituitary diseases.

Objective To evaluate magnetic resonance imaging （MRI） characteristics and surgical results of adrenocorticotropin （ACTH） -secreting pituitary adenomas. Methods MRI characteristics and relationship between MRI positive rate and surgical results of 266 patients with pathologically confn＇med cushing＇s disease were analyzed retrospectively. All patients underwent thin-section sagittal and coronal scans of the pituitary gland before and after administration of gadolinium-diethylene triamine pentaacetic acid （Gd-DTPA） on a 1. 5 Tesla MR/scanner, and dynamic enhanced MR/was performed in 39 patients. All patients underwent transsphenoidal adenomectomy. Endocrinological examinations and assessments were performed. Results Preoperative MR/revealed normal results in 41 （ 15.4% ） cases, microadenoma in 179 （67. 3% ）, macroadenoma in 42 （ 15.8% ）, and huge adenoma in 4 （ 1.5% ）. Pituitary apoplexy was found in 13 （4.9%） cases. Positive rate of ACTH-secreting adenomas was 84.6% （225/266） on MR/scans, and that of small microadenomas was 87.2% （34/39） on dynamic enhanced MRI scans. Preoperative endocrinological tests of 199 cases supported the diagnosis of typical cushing＇s disease, while the other 67 cases had atypical endocrinological results. The endocrinological cure rate, remission rate, and inefficacy rate were 85.7%, 7.9%, and 6. 4%, respectively. There was no difference in the initial endocrinological cure rate between the patients with positive and normal MRI results （90% vs. 87. 8%, P =0. 904）. Conclusions Enhanced coronal pituitary MR/ is helpful for preoperative localization of ACTH-secreting pituitary microadenoma. Dynamic enhanced MR/may improve detection rate of microadenoma. There is no marked difference in the surgical results for patients with preoperative MR/results indicating presence or absence of microadenoma.

Dear Editor,cushing’s disease(CD)is a rare disease manifested as cushing’s syndrome caused by adrenocorticotropic hormone(ACTH)consistently over-secreted by adrenocorticotropic adenomas,followed by stimulation of the adrenal gland to secrete considerable cortisol,triggering metabolic dysfunction,and leading to death from ***,pituitary adrenocorticotropic adenoma-directed drugs can only inhibit ACTH secretion or hamper tumour growth,which limits their clinical ***,Nur77(also known as NR4A1 and NGFI-Ba,a kind of nuclear receptor),an important positive transcription regulator of pro-opiomelanocortin(POMC),the precursor of ACTH,has been regarded as a promising CD target.1 Hence,it would be promising to identify a combination treatment that targets Nur77 and another CD target to cover hormone normalisation in the short term and tumour suppression or even elimination in the long term.
