Prevalence of and risk factors for erectile dysfunction in young nondiabetic obese men:results from a regional study

Erectile dysfunction(ED),a condition closely related to cardiovascular morbidity and mortality,is frequently associated with *** this study,we aimed to determine the prevalence of ED and evaluate the associated risk factors in a cohort of 254 young(18–49 years)nondiabetic obese(body mass index[BMI]≥30 kg m−2)men from primary *** function(International Index of Erectile Function[IIEF-5]questionnaire),quality of life(Aging Males'Symptoms[AMS scale]),and body composition analysis(Tanita MC-180MA)were *** testosterone was determined using high-performance liquid chromatography–mass *** logistic regression analysis was used to study the factors associated with *** prevalence was 42.1%.Subjects with ED presented higher BMI,waist circumference,number of components of the metabolic syndrome,AMS score,insulin resistance,and a more unfavorable body composition than those without *** logistic regression analysis showed that a pathological AMS score(odds ratio[OR]:4.238,Pdegree of obesity(BMI≥40 kg m−2,OR:2.602,P=0.005,compared with BMI 30–34.9 kg m−2),high-density lipoprotein(HDL)-cholesterol levels(OR:0.956,P=0.004),and age(OR:1.047,P=0.016)were factors independently associated with *** conclusion,we demonstrate that,in a primary care-based cohort of nondiabetic young obese men,ED affected>40%of subjects.A pathological AMS score,the degree of obesity,and age were positively associated with ED,while elevated HDL-cholesterol levels were inversely associated with the odds of presenting *** prospective studies are needed to evaluate the long-term consequences of ED in this population.

dear Editor,The severe coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)is associated with ***,such as low-molecular-weight heparin,warfarin,thrombin inhibitors,and factor Xa(FXa)inhibitors,are thus recommended by the American Society of Hematology and National Institutes of Health for COVID-19 patients(Wenzler et al.,2020;Adam et al.,2021).Clinical trials with anticoagulants have shown the increased survival of critically ill COVID-19 patients under non-invasive and invasive ventilatory assistance(Wenzler et al.,2020;Adam et al.,2021),along with decreased consumption of platelets and clotting factors and a reduced risk of hemorrhage(Adam et al.,2021).Among the anti-clotting agents,early use of orally available FXa and thrombin inhibitors(Chowdhury et al.,2020;Rentsch et al.,2021)prevented high levels of D-dimer,which is the final product from the clotting/fibrinolysis cascade and is directly implicated with severe COVID-19(Rentsch et al.,2021).

Mismatching between nest volume and clutch volume reduces egg survival and fledgling success in black-tailed gulls

A longstanding suggestion posits that parents prefer to match nest volume and clutch size （clutch volume）, but few studies have tested this in colonial seabirds that nest in the open. Here, we demonstrate the effects of nest-clutch volume matching on egg survival, hatching, and fledgling success in black-tailed gulls Larus crassirostris on Hongdo Island, Korea. We show that the volume mismatch, defined as the difference between nest volume and total egg volume （the sum of all eggs＇ volume in the clutch）, was positively related to egg and chick mortality caused by predation, but was not significantly related to hatching success incurred by insulation during the incubation period. Although nest volume was negatively related to laying date, we found that the mismatch was positively related to laying date. Our results support the claim that well-matched nest-clutch volume may contribute to survival of eggs and chicks, and ultimately breeding success.

Some highlights of the Gamma-ray first four years of the Fermi Space Telescope

The Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope, formerly called GLAST, measures the cosmic gamma-ray flux in the energy range 8 keV to 〉 300 GeV. In addition to breakthrough capabilities in energy coverage and localization, the very large field of view enables observations of 20~ of the sky at any instant, and the entire sky on a timescale of a few hours. With its launch in 2008, Fermi opens a new and important window on a wide variety of phenomena, including pulsars, black holes and active galactic nuclei, gamma-ray bursts, supernova remnants and the origins of cosmic rays, and searches for hypothetical new phenomena such as particle dark matter annihilations. A brief overview and selected science highlights from the first four years are provided.

The lightweight,rechargeable lithium-ion battery is one of the dominant energy storage devices globally in portable electronics due to its high energy density,no memory effect,wide operating voltage,lightweight,and good charge ***,due to safety concerns,the depletion of lithium reserves,and the corresponding increase of cost,an alternative battery system becomes more and more *** develop alternative battery systems with low cost and high material abundance,for example,sodium,magnesium,zinc,and calcium,it is important to understand the chemical and electronic structure of *** X-ray spectroscopy,for example,X-ray absorption spectroscopy(XAS),X-ray emission spectroscopy(XES),and resonant inelastic soft X-ray scattering(RIXS),is an element-specific technique with sensitivity to the local chemical environment and structural order of the element of *** soft X-ray systems enable operando experiments that can be applied to amorphous and crystalline samples,making it a powerful tool for studying the electronic and structural changes in electrode and electrolyte *** this article,the application of in situ/operando(soft)X-ray spectroscopy in beyond lithium-ion batteries is reviewed to demonstrate how such spectroscopic characterizations could facilitate the interpretation of interfacial phenomena under in situ/operando condition and subsequent development of the beyond lithium-ion batteries.

dear Editor,Monkeypox is a zoonotic disease caused by the monkeypox virus(MPXV),a double-stranded DNA virus in the genus Orthopoxvirus,family *** is known to be transmitted between animals such as rats and squirrels,but animal-to-human and human-to-human transmission has been known in Africa since *** is linked to direct contact with body fluids,skin lesions,and patient items as well as respiratory droplets in case of prolonged face-to-face contact[1].Until recently,only a few cases were associated with travel to endemic countries or contact with infected animals imported from endemic countries.

Here,we propose a method to determine the thickness of the most common transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) placed on the surface of transparent stamps,used for the deterministic placement of two-dimensional materials,by analyzing the red,green and blue channels of transmission-mode optical microscopy images of the *** particular,the blue channel transmittance shows a large and monotonic thickness dependence,making it a very convenient probe of the flake *** method proves to be robust given the small flake-to-flake variation and the insensitivity to doping changes of *** also tested the method for MoSe2,WS2 and *** results provide a reference guide to identify the number of layers of this family of materials on transparent substrates only using optical microscopy.

Mercury is an important pollutant,released into aquatic ecosystems both naturally and by anthropogenic *** element is transferred to aquatic organisms in different ways,causing potential health *** addition,mercury can be accumulated by humans,especially through the consumption of contaminated *** systematic review aims to present mercury pathways,the major routes through which this element reaches the aquatic environment and its transformations until becoming available to living animals,leading to bioaccumulation and biomagnification *** key biotic and abiotic factors affecting such processes,the impact of mercury on animal and human health and the issue of seafood consumption as a source of chronic mercury contamination are also addressed.A total of 101 articles were retrieved from a standardized search on three databases(PubMed,Emabse,and Web of Science),in addition to 28 other studies not found on these databases but considered fundamental to this review(totaling 129 articles).Both biotic and abiotic factors display fundamental importance in mediating mercurial dynamics,i.e.,muscle tropism,and salinity,***,mercurial contamination in aquatic environments affects animal health,especially the risk of extinction species and also on human health,with methylmercury the main mercury species responsible for acute and chronic symptomatology.

Ultrafast exciton relaxation dynamics of PbS and core/shell PbS/CdS quantum dots

Optical properties and ultrafast exciton relaxation dynamics in PbS and core/shell PbS/CdS quantum dots(QDs) have been studied using UV-vis absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy as well as femtosecond(fs) transient absorption *** electronic absorption spectrum of the PbS QDs features broad absorption in the entire near IR-vis-UV region with a monotonic increase in intensity towards shorter *** to PbS,the absorption of the core/shell PbS/CdS QDs shows a slight blue shift in the 600?800 nm region,due to the decrease of the PbS crystal size caused by the synthetic process of the core/shell structure,and increased absorption near 400 nm due to the CdS *** PL of the PbS/CdS QDs was ~2.6 times more intense than that of the PbS QDs,due to surface passivation of PbS by CdS,and blue-shifted,attributable to smaller PbS size and thereby stronger quantum confinement in the core/shell *** transient absorption measurements of both systems showed a strong transient absorption feature from 600 to 750 nm following excitation at 750 *** transient absorption decays can be fit to a biexponential with time constants of 8 and 100 ps for PbS and 6 and 80 ps for PbS/*** amplitude and lifetime of the fast component were excitation intensity dependent,with the amplitude increasing more than linearly with increasing excitation intensity and the lifetime decreasing with increasing *** fast decay is attributed to exciton-exciton annihilation and it occurs more readily for the PbS/CdS than the PbS QDs,which is attributed to a lower density of trap states in the core/shell QDs,as supported by their stronger PL.
