SPEI_(PM)-based research on drought impact on maize yield in North China Plain

The calculation method of potential evapotranspiration（PET） was improved by adopting a more reliable PET estimate based on the Penman-Monteith equation into the standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index（SPEI） in this study（SPEI PM）. This improvement increased the applicability of SPEI in North China Plain（NCP）. The historic meteorological data during 1962–2011 were used to calculate SPEI PM. The detrended yields of maize from Hebei, Henan, Shandong, Beijing, and Tianjin provinces/cities of NCP were obtained by linear sliding average method. Then regression analysis was made to study the relationships between detrended yields and SPEI values. Different time scales were applied, and thus SPEI PM was mentioned as SPEI PMk-j（k=time scale, 1, 2, 3, 4,…, 24 mon; j=month, 1, 2, 3,..., 12）, among which SPEI PM3-8 reflected the water condition from June to August, a period of heavy precipitation and vigorous growth of maize in NCP. SPEI PM3-8 was highly correlated with detrended yield in this region, which can effectively evaluate the effect of drought on maize yield. Additionally, this relationship becomes more significant in recent 20 yr. The regression model based on the SPEI series explained 64.8% of the variability of the annual detrended yield in Beijing, 45.2% in Henan, 58.6% in Shandong, and 54.6% in Hebei. Moreover, when SPEI PM3-8 is in the range of –0.6 to 1.1, –0.9 to 0.8 and –0.8 to 2.3, the detrended yield increases in Shandong, Henan and Beijing. The yield increasing range was during normal water condition in Shandong and Henan, where precipitation was abundant. It indicated that the field management matched well with local water condition and thus allowed stable and high yield. Maize yield increase in these two provinces in the future can be realized by further improving water use efficiency and enhancing the stress resistance as well as yield stability. Unravelling transcriptome changes between two distinct maize inbred lines using RNA-seq

Seed size play a significant role in maize yield production. Two maize inbred lines with distinct seed size and weight, V671（a large-seed inbred line） and Mc（a small-seed inbred line）, were investigated by RNA-seq at 14 days after pollination（DAP）, when maize endosperm undergoes an active transition from mitosis to storage accumulation. RNA-seq expression data showed that the small-seed line Mc had a higher storage accumulation activity, whereas the large-seed kernel line V671 possessed a higher DNA synthesis activity. An investigation of the pattern of increasing kernel width at serial DAPs showed that V671 experienced an increased kernel width later than did Mc, but the rate and duration of increase were longer in V671. SDS-PAGE of the storage proteins and quantitative RT-PCR of cell cycle-related genes and indole-3-acetic（IAA） synthesis genes certified that the transition from mitosis to storage accumulation starts earlier in Mc. We hypothesized that the difference in the mitosis-to-storage accumulation transition accounts for the larger seed size in V671 vs. Mc.

Effects of RNAi Silencing of SSIII Gene on Phosphorus Content and Characteristics of Starch in Potato Tubers

The sense and antisense fragments of the soluble starch synthase （SSII1） gene and the intron fragment of somatic embryogenesis receptor-like kinase （SERK1） gene were cloned from potato using PCR techniques. The RNAi plant expression vectors pBI-SSIII-RNAi and pBIC-SSIII-RNAi were constructed which containing fusion fragment of ＂sense fragment-intron-antisense fragment＂ driven by the constitutive expression promoter CaMV 35S and the tuber-specific expression promoter CIPP, respectively. The putative transgenic plants of potato cultivars Kexin-1 and Kexin-4 were obtained using Agrobacterium-mediated transformation method. PCR assay showed that the interference fragment of SSlll gene was integrated into potato genome. The RT-PCR analysis showed that the expression of SSlll gene was repressed apparently on the transcription level. Starch granules of the transgenic potato plants were different in morphology and became cracked in starch granule centre compared with the non-transgenic control plants. The amylose content of starch was increased by 2.68-29.05%, amylopectin to amylose ratio of starch had declined significantly, and the phosphorus content of the starch of the transgenic plants was reduced 9.94-58.36% compared with control plants. The results could provide certain foundation for improvement of potato starch quality.

FunctionFlow:coordinating parallel tasks

With the growing allel programming,nowadays popularity of task-based partask-parallel programming libraries and languages are still with limited support for coordinating parallel *** limitation forces programmers to use additional independent components to coordinate the parallel tasks -the components can be third-party libraries or additional components in the same programming library or ***,mixing tasks and coordination components increase the difficulty of task-based programming,and blind schedulers for understanding tasks'dependencies. In this paper,we propose a task-based parallel programming library,Function Flow,which coordinates tasks in the purpose of avoiding additional independent coordination ***,we use dependency expression to represent ubiquitous tasks'*** key idea behind dependency expression is to use && for both task's termination and Ⅱ for any task termination,along with the combination of dependency ***,as runtime support,we use a lightweight representation for dependency expression. Also,we use suspended-task queue to schedule tasks that still have prerequisites to run. Finally,we demonstrate Function Flow's effectiveness in two aspects,case study about implementing popular parallel patterns with FunctionFIow,and performance comparision with state-of-the-art practice,*** demonstration shows that FunctionFIow can generally coordinate parallel tasks without involving additional components,along with comparable performance with TBB.

Production of a monoclonal antibody specific for high molecular weight glutenin subunits (HMW-GS) in wheat and its antigenic determinant

Micro-Raman studies on the conformational behaviors of monosodium glutamate in dehydration process

The conformational behaviors of monosodium glutamate （MSG） in a dehydration process were studied by Micro-Raman spectroscopy in combination with Hartree-Fock calculations using 6-3 1＋G^＊ method. The dehydration process of the MSG droplet was performed by decreasing the ambient relative humidity （RH）. The intensity ratio of the 935 cm^-1 band to 884 cm^-1 band （I935/ 1884） kept decreasing when RH decreased. By optimizing the geometries with different fixed dihedral angles, the downtrend of （I935/I884） is found to be due to the reduction of MSG molecular volume.

Metal-organic frameworks （MOFs） have attracted tremendous attention due to their fascinating structure types and extensive application prospect in many fields. In the process of synthesis, aromatic polycarboxylic acid as ligand plays an important role in constructing functional MOFs. In this review, we have summarized the research progress on the synthesis and structures analysis of MOFs based on aromatic polycarboxylic acids as well as their potential applications in magnetism, gas adsorption, separation, photodegradation, catalysis and emission.

Three New Complexes Based on the Flexible Zwitterionic Dicarboxylate Ligand： Synthesis, Structures, and Properties

Three new complexes have been prepared based on the transition metals and zwitterionic dicarboxylate ligand 1,1＇-（1,4-phenylene-bis（methylene））-bis（pyridine-3-carboxylic acid）（L）, whose formulas are {[Cd4（L）（SO4）]· （C1）6}n （1）, [Zn（L）C12], （2）, and [Co（L）C12], （3）, respectively. Complexes 1-3 have been characterized by elemental analyses, IR spectroscopy, XRD, thermal analyses and single crystal X-ray （powder） diffraction. 1 crystallizes in monoclinic space group C2/m, displaying a 2-D layer structure with three unique Cd^2＋ centers. 2 and 3 are iso- morphic structures with the orthorhombic Cmca space group. They exhibit a 1-D zigzag chain, which can be linked to generate a 2-D layer via hydrogen bonding interactions （C--H＇＂O）. Moreover, electrochemical behavior reveals that the redox reaction of 3-CPE is a surface-controlled reaction. And the luminescent properties of the title comlexes have been investigated at room temperature.

Grafting Raises the Cu Tolerance of Cucumber Through Protecting Roots Against Oxidative Stress Induced by Cu Stress

A greenhouse experiment was carried out to determine plant growth, reactive oxygen species （ROS） metabolism in roots and functions of plasma membrane （PM） and tonoplast in cucumber seedlings （Cucumis sativus L. ev. Xintaimici） treated with 40 μmol L^-1 CuSO4·5H2O, which were either ungrafted or grafted onto the rootstock （Cucurbitaficifolia）. Cu treatment inhibited growth, induced significant accumulation of H2O2 and led to serious lipid peroxidation in cucumber roots, and the ROS-scavenging enzymes activities in grafted seedlings roots were significantly higher than that of ungrafted plants, thus less accumulation in grafted cucumber roots induced by Cu. As a result, lipid peroxidation in roots decreased. Furthermore, the activities of H^-ATPase, H＋-PPase and Ca^2＋-ATPase in PM and/or tonoplast in grafted cucumber seedlings under Cu stress were obviously higher than that in ungrafted plants, resulting into higher ability in grafted plants to expulse the excess H＋, promote the cytoplasm alkalinization, regulate the intracellular Ca^2＋ concentration and brought the cytoplasma concentration of free Ca2＋ to extremely low level under Cu stress.
