The paper designs an automated valuation model to predict the price of residential property in coventry,United Kingdom,and achieves this by means of geostatistical Kriging,a popularly employed distance-based learning *** traditional applications of distance-based learning,this papers implements non-Euclidean distance metrics by approximating road distance,travel time and a linear combination of both,which this paper hypothesizes to be more related to house prices than straight-line(Euclidean)*** that–to undertake Kriging–a valid variogram must be produced,this paper exploits the conforming properties of the Minkowski distance function to approximate a road distance and travel time metric.A least squares approach is put forth for variogram parameter selection and an ordinary Kriging predictor is implemented for *** predictor is then validated with 10-fold crossvalidation and a spatially aware checkerboard hold out method against the almost exclusively employed,Euclidean *** a comparison of results for each distance metric,this paper witnesses a goodness of fit(r2)result of 0.6901±0.18 SD for real estate price prediction compared to the traditional(Euclidean)approach obtaining a suboptimal r2 value of 0.66±0.21 SD.

Abdominal aortic aneurysm （AAA） is a relatively common pathology among the elderly. More people above the age of 80 will have to undergo treatment of an AAA in the future. This review aims to summarize the literature focusing on endovascular repair of AAA in the geriatric population. A systematic review of the literature was performed, including results from endovascular abdominal aortic aneurysm repair （EVAR） registries and studies comparing open repair and EVAR in those above the age of 80. A total of 15 studies were identified. EVAR in this population is efficient with a success rate exceeding 90% in all cases, and safe, with early mortality and morbidity being superior among patients undergoing EVAR against open repair. Late survival can be as high as 95% after 5 years. Aneurysm-related death over long-term follow-up was low after EVA_R, ranging fi＇om 0 to 3.4%. Endovascular repair can be offered safely in the geriatric population and seems to compare favourably with open repair in all studies in the literature to date.

A micro gas turbine(MGT)can potentially be an alternative power source to the conventional internal combustion engine as a range extender in hybrid electric *** integration of the MGT into a hybrid vehicle needs a new approach for technical validation requirements compared to the testing of an internal combustion *** attributes of the MGT are predicted to cause concerns for vehicle sub-system requirements such as high ambient temperature and start-stop *** paper describes the results from specially developed experimental techniques for testing the MGT in a typical automo-tive environment.A black box MGT was used in this study for performance investigation during hot and cold *** MGT was instrumented and fitted with automotive standard components to replicate typical vehicle operational *** intake air temperature was varied between 10 and 24°C.A significant reduction in the power output of the MGT was observed as the intake temperature was *** proposed case scenario caused a reduction in nitrogen oxide emis-sions in the range of 0.02−0.04 g/km because of the lower combustion temperature at high intake ***,hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide emissions have not shown a noticeable reduction during the power output *** experimental results have highlighted the potential issues of using the MGT at higher intake temperatures and suggest design change to take the effect of higher engine bay temperature into account.

Field cancerisation in colorectal cancer:A new frontier or pastures past?

Despite considerable advances in our understanding of cancer biology, early diagnosis of colorectal cancer remains elusive. Based on the adenoma-carcinoma sequence, cancer develops through the progressive accumulation of mutations in key genes that regulate cell growth. However, recent mathematical modelling suggests that some of these genetic events occur prior to the development of any discernible histological abnormality. Cells acquire pro-tumourigenic mutations that are not able to produce morphological change but predispose to cancer formation. These cells can grow to form large patches of mucosa from which a cancer arises. This process has been termed "field cancerisation". It has received little attention in the scientific literature until recently. Several studies have now demonstrated cellular, genetic and epigenetic alterations in the macroscopically normal mucosa of colorectal cancer patients. In some reports, these changes were effectively utilised to identify patients with a neoplastic lesion suggesting potential application in the clinical setting. In this article, we present the scientific evidence to support field cancerisation in colorectal cancer and discuss important limitations that require further investigation. Characterisation of the field defect is necessary to enable early diagnosis of colorectal cancer and identify molecular targets for chemoprevention. Field cancerisation offers a promising prospect for experimental cancer research and has potential to improve patient outcomes in the clinical setting.

Introduction:ABCD^(2) risk score and cerebral microemboli detected by transcranial Doppler(TCD)have been separately shown to the predict risk of recurrent acute *** studied whether ABCD2 risk score predicts cerebral microemboli in patients with hyper-acute symptomatic carotid artery *** and methods:We studied 206 patients presenting within 2 weeks of transient ischaemic attack or minor stroke and found to have critical carotid artery stenosis(≥50% ).86 patients(age 70±1(SEM:years),58 men,83 Caucasian)had evidence of microemboli;72(84% )of these underwent carotid endarterectomy(CEA).120 patients(age 72±1 years,91 men,113 Caucasian)did not have microemboli detected;102(85% )of these underwent *** were analysed using X2 and Mann–Whitney U tests and receiver operating characteristic(ROC)***:140/206(68% :95% CI 61.63 to 74.37)patients with hyper-acute symptomatic critical carotid stenosis had an ABCD2 risk score≥*** was no significant difference in the NICE red flag criterion for early assessment(ABCD^(2) risk score≥4)for patients with cerebral microemboli versus those without microemboli(59/86 vs 81/120 patients:OR 1.05 ABCD2 risk score≥4(95% CI 0.58 to 1.90,p=0.867)).The ABCD2 risk score was<4 in 27 of 86(31% :95% CI 21 to 41)embolising patients and in 39 of 120(31% :95% CI 23 to 39)without cerebral *** adjusting for pre-neurological event antiplatelet treatment(APT),area under the curve(AUC)of ROC for ABCD2 risk score showed no prediction of cerebral microemboli(no pre-event APT,n=57:AUC 0.45(95% CI 0.29 to 0.60,p=0.531);preevent APT,n=147:AUC 0.51(95% CI 0.42 to 0.60,p=0.804)).Conclusions:The ABCD2 score did not predict the presence of cerebral microemboli or carotid disease in over one-quarter of patients with symptomatic critical carotid artery *** the basis of NICE guidelines(refer early if ABCD2≥4),assessment of high stroke risk based on ABCD2 scoring may lead to inappropriate delay in urgent treat

Impact of Ownership Types on R＆D Intensity and Innovation Performance--Evidence from Transitional China

This paper examines the effects of ownership types on firms＇ R＆D intensity and innovation performance, using a sample of 357,857 Chinese firms from 2005-2007. This study finds considerable divergence among Chinese domestic enterprises in terms of R＆D intensity and innovation performance. Firms owned by the central government are the key drivers for firms＇ R＆D activities, while local government, private and foreign ownerships are negatively related to both R＆D intensity and innovation performance. Significant divergence within government ownership category and argues that China＇s institutional changes generate varied government ownership groups with different levels of resource endowment, which in turn influence firms＇ R＆D activities.
