Differences in dinucleotide frequencies of thermophilic genes encoding water soluble and membrane proteins

The occurrence frequencies of the dinucleotides of genes of three thermophilic and three mesophilic species from both archaea and eubacteria were investigated in this study. The genes encoding water soluble proteins were rich in the dinucleotides of purine dimers, whereas the genes encoding membrane proteins were rich in pyrimidine dimers. The dinucleotides of purine dimers are the counterparts of pyrimidine dimers in a double-stranded DNA. The purine/pyrimidine dimers were favored in the thermophiles but not in the mesophiles, based on comparisons of observed and expected frequencies. This finding is in agreement with our previous study which showed that purine/pyrimidine dimers are positive factors that increase the thermal stability of DNA. The dinucleotides AA, AG, and GA are components of the codons of charged residues of Glu, Asp, Lys, and Arg, and the dinucleotides TT, CT, and TC are components of the codons of hydrophobic residues of Leu, Ile, and Phe. This is consistent with the suitabilities of the different amino acid residues for water soluble and membrane proteins. Our analysis provides a picture of how thermophilic species produce water soluble and membrane proteins with distinctive characters: the genes encoding water soluble proteins use DNA sequences rich in purine dimers, and the genes encoding membrane proteins use DNA sequences rich in pyrimidine dimers on the opposite strand.

Traffic congestion is related to various density waves, which might be described by the nonlinear wave equations, such as the Burgers, Korteweg-de-Vries （KdV） and modified Korteweg-de-Vries （mKdV） equations. In this paper, the mKdV equations of four different versions of lattice hydrodynamic models, which describe the kink-antikink soliton waves are derived by nonlinear analysis. Furthermore, the general solution is given, which is applied to solving a new model -- the lattice hydrodynamic model with bidirectional pedestrian flow. The result shows that this general solution is consistent with that given by previous work.

In the operation of a centrifugal compressor of turbocharger, instability phenomena such as rotating stall and surge are induced at a lower flow rate close to the maximum pressure ratio. In this study, for the suppression of surge phenomenon resulting in the extension of the stable operating range of centrifugal compressor to lower flow rate, the compressed air at the compressor exit was re-circulated and injected into the impeller inlet by using the double injection nozzle system. The experiments were performed to find out the optimum circumferential position of the second nozzle relative to the fixed first one and the optimum inner diameter of the injection nozzles, which are able to most effectively reduce the flow rate of surge inception. Moreover, in order to examine the universality of these optimum values, the experiments were carried out for two types of compressors.

Bistable behavior of neuronal complex networks is investigated in the limited-sustained-activity regime when the network is composed of excitatory and inhibitory *** standard stability analysis is performed on the two metastable states *** theoretical analysis and numerical simulations show consistently that the difference between time scales of excitatory and inhibitory populations can influence the dynamical behaviors of the neuronal networks dramatically,leading to the transition from bistable behaviors with memory effects to the collapse of bistable *** results may suggest one possible neuronal information processing by only tuning time scales.

An external weak electric field is introduced into the small-world networks of Hodgkin–Huxley neurons to study the control and breakup of a spiral *** effect of an external electric field on the neurons in the small-world network is described by an additive perturbation on the membrane potentials of neurons at the cellular level,in which an additive term VE is imposed on the physiological membrane potential.A statistical factor of synchronization is used to measure the collective behaviour of spiral waves by changing the electric field;it is confirmed that a smaller factor of synchronization is associated with the survival of a spiral *** the case of no channel noise,the spiral wave could be removed under a certain intensity of constant electric field;it keeps robustly to the weak electric field when the electric field changes *** the case of weak channel noise,a breakup of the spiral wave is observed when the intensity of the electric field exceeds certain thresholds,which could be measured from the curve for synchronization *** drift of the spiral wave is observed under the weak electric field.

Mycosis fungoides(MF) is a cutaneous T-cell lymphoma that can undergo local progression with possible systemic dissemination. We report a case of a patient affected by MF with a pancreatic mass that was a diagnostic challenge between primitive tumor and pancreatic metastasis from MF. Clinical setting findings and imaging studies raised the suspicion of a pancreatic primary neoplasm. A diagnostic clue was provided by the combined histomorphologic/immunohistochemical study of pancreatic and cutaneous biopsies, which revealed a pancreatic localization of MF. Considering the rarity of metastatic localization of MF to the pancreas, we next investigated whether chemokinechemokine receptor interactions could be involved in the phenomenon to provide new insight into the possible mechanisms underlying metastatic localization of MF to the pancreas. Histological analyses of archival pancreatic tissue demonstrated that glucagon-secreting cells of the pancreatic islets expressed the CCL27 chemokine, which may have attracted in our case metastatic MF cells expressing the complementary receptor CCR10.
