As an introductory course for the emerging major of big data management and application,“Introduction to Big Data”has not yet formed a curriculum standard and implementation plan that is widely accepted and used by *** this end,we discuss some of our explorations and attempts in the construction and teaching process of big data courses for the major of big data management and application from the perspective of course planning,course implementation,and course *** interviews with students and feedback from questionnaires,students are highly satisfied with some of the teaching measures and programs currently adopted.

Slotted Hole Effect on Damage Mechanism of Gymnasium Building with RC Frame and Steel Roof

On the 2011 off the Pacific Coast of Tohoku Earthquake, gymnasium buildings exhibited the unexpected structural damages, which prevented a use as evacuation shelters in during- and post-disaster periods. The major failure occurring on the connection between the RC column top and steel roof as well as the cracks in the RC column base was observed during the emergent inspection. According to the earlier studies, it was implied that the presence of the slotted hole possibly deteriorates the seismic capacity;however, the length of slotted hole was fixed at a certain value. Facing this concern, this research attempts to clarify the influence of the slotted hole length through a comprehensive parametric study by pushover and seismic response analyses. In conclusion, it has been discovered that the slotted hole deteriorates the seismic capacity for the connection failure up to almost 50% of that without slotted hole. Moreover, the discrepancy of characteristics obtained by the static and dynamic analyses is originated by means of the presence of slotted hole. This slotted hole effect should be noted by structural engineers and researchers to provide the adequate seismic diagnosis and strengthening.

Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine has comprehensively implemented the systembased integrated teaching for clinical medicine *** to the review and summarization of teaching the digestive system course for several years,we deem that compared with discipline-based traditional teaching model,the integrated teaching can efficiently improve students’interest and passion for learning basic medicine knowledge and facilitate students’ability to establish the connection between basic medicine and clinical *** the future,the knowledge integration among different disciplines should be enhanced,such as the integration of histology with pathology,morphology with function,and physiology with pharmacology,*** is necessary to adjust teaching contents and methods accordingly,so as to achieve better teaching outcomes.

Hydrous minerals in subducted crust can transport large amounts of water into Earth’s deep mantle. Our laboratory experiments revealed the surprising pressure-induced chemistry that, when water meets iron at the core-mantle boundary, they react to form an interlayer with an extremely oxygen-rich form of iron, iron dioxide, together with iron hydride. Hydrogen in the layer will escape upon further heating and rise to the crust, sustaining the water cycle. With water supplied by the subducting slabs meeting the nearly inexhaustible iron source in the core, an oxygen-rich layer would cumulate and thicken, leading to major global consequences in our planet. The seismic signature of the D″ layer may echo the chemical complexity of this layer. Over the course of geological time, the enormous oxygen reservoir accumulating between the mantle and core may have eventually reached a critical eruption point. Very large-scale oxygen eruptions could possibly cause major activities in the mantle convection and leave evidence such as the rifting of supercontinents and the Great Oxidation Event.

Aims Community characteristics,such as disturbances and interspecific competition that affect the availability of microsites and resources,contribute to the success or failure of the establishment of exotic plant *** particular,these two community characteristics may have adverse effects on plant emergence and survival,which are particularly important for population establishment and there-fore it may be necessary to consider both these vital rates simul-taneously when assessing demographic ***,we investigated the impacts of disturbance and interspecific compe-tition on the establishment of a perennial invasive herb,Lupinus polyphyllus *** Over the course of 2 years,we conducted an experiment in 10 populations of this species in Finland in which we manipulated the levels of soil *** recorded community charac-teristics(*** number of vascular plant species,vegetation height,and the proportions of bare ground,litter and moss),and observed the emergence and survival of *** individuals in study *** Findings A mild disturbance(breaking the soil surface mechanically)slightly increased seedling emergence but did not affect plant ***,an intense disturbance(vegetation and litter removal)had no effect on seedling emergence,although it significantly increased the proportion of bare ground and,consequently,seedling *** was not affected by the height of the surrounding vegetation,but both seedling emergence and plant survival increased with an increasing number of plant species in the study *** find-ings demonstrate that single disturbance events may considerably promote the establishment of invasive herbs,although the overall effect and demographic mechanisms behind the increased establish-ment are likely to vary depending on disturbance ***,our results suggest that species diversity per se may not be a crucial mechanism for locally preventing the establishment of exoti

Intracellular zinc ion(Zn^(2+))accumulation disrupts the Zn^(2+)homeostasis,providing an ion-overloading anticancer strategy with great *** self-adaptation of tumor cells to ion concentration,however,puts forward higher requirements for the design of ion-overloading ***,“block and attack”antitumor strategy was applied through a composite nanomaterials(UHSsPZH NPs).The strategy demonstrated powerful ion interference ability through both“blocking”the efflux of excess Zn^(2+)via gene silencing and“attacking”tumor cells via target delivery of ZnO_(2).After cellular internalization,ZnO_(2) was degraded to Zn^(2+)and hydrogen peroxide(H_(2)O_(2)),and the gene expression of zinc transporter 1(ZnT1)was silenced by targeting of released siRNA,which together caused intracellular Zn2+-*** of Zn^(2+)further interfered with intracellular Ca^(2+)homeostasis,inhibited the electron transport chain and promoted the production of endogenous reactive oxygen species(ROS),which assisted the“attack”to tumor cells together with the exogenous ROS generated by UHSsPZH NPs under 980 nm laser *** summary,this work supplies a“block and attack”strategy for the application of ion homeostasis interference in tumor therapy.

Rubblization of Shaybah Airport Runway Pavement—A Sustainable Circular Economy Solution

Shaybah airport runway upgrade construction work was successfully completed in 77 days, four months ahead of the contractual construction execution schedule. The project was honored with the PMI 2020 Project Excellence Award for Europe, Africa and the Middle East. Rubblization of existing concrete pavement was one of the key factors for the early completion and project achievements and awards. Rubblization technology was used to crush existing worn-out Shaybah airport runway concrete pavement, keeping the integrity of underneath sub-grades, and reused as a structurally strong base course to overlay hot mix asphalt. This paper will share the success story behind the process of selection, definition, sourcing, implementation, validation and acceptance of rubblized concrete pavement, and its contribution to the Shaybah Airport Runway Upgrade Project’s achievements. This paper presents Rubblization as a practical, cost effective and sustainable option for repairing deteriorated airfield concrete pavement, and will also demonstrate how the implementation of rubblization of runway pavement contributes to the Saudi Aramco initiative to adopt circular economy principles. The circular economy unlocks economic opportunities, preserves natural resources, and improves environmental performance, an initiative sponsored by Saudi Aramco executive management.
