Mesenchymal stem cells(MSCs)are promising candidates for bone regeneration therapies due to their plasticity and easiness of sourcing.MSC-based treatments are generally considered a safe procedure,however,the long-term results obtained up to now are far from satisfactory.The main causes of these therapeutic limitations are inefficient homing,engraftment,and osteogenic differentiation.Many studies have proposed modifications to improve MSC engraftment and osteogenic differentiation of the transplanted cells.Several strategies are aimed to improve cell resistance to the hostile microenvironment found in the recipient tissue and increase cell survival after transplantation.These strategies could range from a simple modification of the culture conditions,known as cell-preconditioning,to the genetic modification of the cells to avoid cellular senescence.Many efforts have also been done in order to enhance the osteogenic potential of the transplanted cells and induce bone formation,mainly by the use of bioactive or biomimetic scaffolds,although alternative approaches will also be discussed.This review aims to summarize several of the most recent approaches,providing an up-to-date view of the main developments in MSCbased regenerative techniques.

Background:The exclusion of tourist species from samples is important to avoid bias in community analyses.However,in practice,this is a very difficult task.The commonly used methods by researchers,when the habitat of the species is not known,have several shortcomings:first,they exclude not only pseudo-rare species but also genuinely rare species;second,the results obtained with those methods depend on the abundance of the sampling;and third,they follow very subjective rules.The aims of this study were:(i)to propose a methodology to detect and exclude habitat-tourist species from the database used to carry out analyses in community ecology studies,(ii)to evaluate how the presence of habitat-tourist species affects the richness estimates,and(iii)to assess the effect of including juvenile spiders in the detection of tourist species and the effect of removing them from the richness estimates.Results:When the adult+juvenile dataset was considered,twenty-one habitat-tourist species were detected:8 in forest foliage,11 in forest leaf litter,and 2 in grassland.When habitat-tourist species were considered with this dataset,richness overestimation was significant in foliage and in leaf litter,and the final slopes of the richness estimation curves were significantly steeper in leaf litter.When only the adult dataset was considered,eight habitat-tourist species were detected:3 in forest foliage,4 in forest leaf litter,and just one in grassland.The inclusion of habitat-tourist species in this dataset showed an overestimation of richness,but this was not significant.Conclusions:The proposed methodology contributes to solving the problem of tourist species,which was recognized as one of the great problems in biodiversity studies.This study showed that common estimators overestimate species richness when habitat-tourist species are included,leading to erroneous conclusions.Besides,this research showed that the inclusion of juveniles(e.***.spiders)could improve the analysis outputs because it allowed the detection of more habitat-t

The effects of free-floating mats of the water hyacinth Eichhornia crassipes (Mart.) Solms on the limnological characteristics of two lakes located on the fringing floodplain of the lower Paraná River (27°27'S, 58°55'W) were studied monthly between April 1998 and April 1999. The mobility of the free-floating vegetation at both locations prevented continual observation. Therefore, to carry out the intensive sampling needed for this study, two experimental ponds (A and B) were filled with water from the Paraná River in 1996. Pond A was designed to reproduce conditions similar to those of lakes vegetated with water hyacinth. Pond B was designed to recreate the limnological conditions of these lakes, such as a high concentration of dissolved and fine particulate organic matter and a peat layer on the bottom;however, pond B lacked macrophytes. Natural lakes covered with free-floating vegetation were very similar to pond A, but these water bodies showed a lower temperature, dissolved oxygen level and pH and a higher conductivity than the non-vegetated pond. Our results indicated that water hyacinth has a strong local influence on the limnological conditions in subtropical shallow lakes. Our results may assist in developing cause-consequence models by demonstrating the relevance of the effect of thermal damping produced by floating meadows.

Late Middle Triassic to early Late Triassic insects from Argentina have been previously described from the Bermejo and Cuyana Basins where they have been recovered from the Ischichuca-Los Rastros and Potrerillos-Cacheuta Formations, respectively. The insect fauna discussed herein was collected during field studies in 1986/1987 from the Llantenes section （Norian to Rhaetian？ Late Triassic）, which is situated in the Malargiie Basin in southern Mendoza province. The insect remains were found in the upper part of the Llantenes section （Llantenes Formation）, which is built up of two coarsening-upwards cycles reflecting a deltaic progradation of a fluvial into a lacustrine environment （lower part）, succeeded by repeated progradatious into a floodplaindominated environment （upper part; with finds of insects, conchostracans, fish remains, plant fragments, and drifted logs）. The new finds represent the youngest Triassic insect records described from Argentina and even from South America in its entirety. There is only one contemporaneous fossil assemblage in Gondwana： in the Ciarence/Moreton Basin （Aberdare Conglomerate; Late Norian） in Australia. The new Triassic insects include an impression of an isolated Mecopterida-like wing （Mendozachorista volkheimeri gen. et sp. nov.; Mendozachoristidae fam. nov.）, coleopteran elytra of the Permosynidae （Ademosyne rosenfeldi sp. nov. and Ademosyne Uantenesensis sp. nov.） and other isolated body fragments. This new Late Triassic entomofauna from Argentina is of considerable importance in the reconstruction of the biotic recovery of continental environments in Gondwana after the catastrophic mass extinction at the P/T boundary.

Water buffalo(Bubalus bubalis)and domestic cattle(Bos taurus)are closely related species.However,embryo transfer interspecies has been attempted without any success.The failure in hybrid embryo-implantation is associated with the glycocode in the maternal-fetal interface.Glycosylation patterns have been studied in different species of ruminants;however,in B.bubalis,only the binucleated cells(BNC)have been analyzed.This glycocode is essential for a successful embryo-implantation and can be defined by Lectin-Histochemistry(LHC).The aim of this study is to compare the glycosylation pattern of placenta and uterus in water buffaloes and cattle by LHC.Tissue samples of placenta and uterus from pregnant Mediterranean female water buffaloes(Buf1)and Angus cows(Bov1)were analyzed.All animals were euthanized at 98 days of gestation.LHC was carried out using twelve lectins(Con A,LCA,PSA,sWGA,PHA-e,SBA,UEA-1,WGA,RCA-1,PNA,DBA,BSA-1).The intensity of lectin binding was semiquantitatively scored using a scale of 0(negative)to 3(strongly positive).Difference between species was found in trophoblast layer by PSA,SWGA,PNA and BSA-1,in BNC,and in the mononuclear cells by LCA,PSA,PHA-e,DBA,BSA-1,PNA.In utero,differences in the apical cellular membrane and the secretion of glands were identified by DBA and RCA-1,and in the cytoplasm of those glandular epithelial cells by PHA-e,BSA-1,WGA,and SBA.In both species,BNC presented a strong positive reaction with DBA and SBA,a moderate response by LCA,PHA-e,BSA-1 and PNA lectin,and a low reaction by PSA,UEA-1,SWGA,WGA,Con A and RCA-1.The results found in this study suggest that although both species are closely related,glycosylation patterns in the placenta and uterus are different,thus providing a possible reason for embryo transfer not being possible between these species.

This present study was conducted to evaluate the metabolic effects of isolated fi ber of carrot supplementation in rats.Physicochemical properties of fi ber were determined.The groups were as follows:animals fed a standard diet,control group;high fi ber supplementation(70 mg);low fi ber supplementation(35 mg);for 12 weeks.Blood samples were collected at the time of sacrifi ce.The weights of heart,liver,kidneys and spleen of the experimental rats with respect to body weight were recorded.Commercial kits were used to determine serum glucose concentration,lipid profi le(cholesterol,HDL-cholesterol,triglycerides),and the two main aminotransferases glutamic-oxalacetic transaminase(GOT)/glutamate-pyruvate transaminase(GPT).A histopathological assay was performed on the heart,liver,and spleen tissues of animals.Supplementation with fi ber favors weight loss in female((242.03±23.73)-(197.81±10.45)g);and male rats((262.50±32.21)-(213.96±12.56)g and induces a decrease in glucose levels in the supplemented animals.With the exception of total high-density lipoprotein cholesterol,the other lipid fractions decrease signifi cantly in rats supplemented.Fiber supplementation did not induce changes in the dissected organs of the supplemented animals.In conclusion supplementation of fiber,improves glucose control,lower plasma lipid concentrations and reduced body weight in normal rats.

Morphological responses of three persistent native anuran species after forest conversion into monoculture pine plantations:tolerance or prosperity?

Species loss by habitat replacement operating as an ecological filter is a well-known consequence of modern human activities. In contrast, the ecological and evolutionary response of species overcoming those filters in convertedhabitats has not been thoroughly explored. Species that persist are subject to novel and potentially stressful conditions that may induce certain morphological changes. We evaluated changes in the functional morphology of threeanuran species persisting after the conversion of areas of the Atlantic Forest into pine plantations. We specificallyevaluated differences in body size and body condition indices, head width, and hind legs’ length between adultindividuals from both habitats and sexes. Habitat conversion and sexual dimorphism affected the morphology ofthe three anurans, with varying effects upon species and traits. Regarding the effect of habitat conversion, Elachistocleis bicolor increased body condition in plantations with no changes in the other traits, Physalaemus cuvierishowed only a marginal increment in residual body mass in plantations, and Odontophrynus americanus exhibiteda substantial increment in body size while maintaining its body condition in plantations. Remarkably, none of theresults suggested these persistent anurans were stressed by forest conversion. This study shows that habitat conversion may induce intraspecific morphological changes in ecologically relevant traits of persistent species, andthat disturbed areas do not necessarily imply stressful, low quality habitats affecting all persistent native speciesnegatively.

Efficacy of Qigong for the treatment of alopecia universalis: a clinical case report

Qigong is a part of traditional Chinese medicine. According to the antique treaties, the foundations of traditional Chinese medicine are based in maintaining the harmony between Qi (energy), Jing (essence) and Shen (spirit). Alterations in this harmony can develop and determine the appearance of disease. Therapeutic effects of Qigong are helpful in the prevention and treatment of several diseases. It's main role in restoring body functions is due to the communication between internal organs, tissues and cells. The main goal of this work is to show the efficacy of Qigong in the treatment of a dermatological disease characterized by the appearance of circular or oval patches of missing hair, known as alopecia universalis. For western medicine the exact cause of this illness is not totally revealed, however, it's attributed to psycological, genetics and metabolic alterations. From the traditional Chinese medicine perspective, hair alterations are framed in the area of the water energy, represented by the kidney organ. The results of Qigong treatment suggested that the cranial hair follicles had been activated since the first treatment. As treatment progressed, the cranial hair follicles continued to grow, what's more, the brightness and pigmentation of the hair also increased. Therefore, in the clinical conditions evaluated, Qigong could be an effective alternative treatment in consideration of the visible evidence about rapid and long lasting results. Besides, we did not observe any side effects of Qigong in this case.
