Dual-freq.ency whole body vibration enhances vertical jumping and change-of-direction ability in rugby players

Background:Traditional vertical and side-alternating whole body vibrations(WBV) can effectively improve muscle power performance but have a limited efficacy for enhancing change-of-direction(COD) *** dual-plate WBV uniq.ely providing various directions of movements with higher and distinctive freq.encies for each leg may cause better acute effect on muscle power and stretch-shortening cycle efficacy contributing to COD ***,the purpose of this study was to investigate the acute effect of dual-or single-freq.ency WBV on sq.at jumps(SJs),countermovement jumps(CMJs),eccentric utilization ratios(EURs),and COD ability in rugby ***:Fourteen male rugby players were recruited and performed a 4 min partial sq.at with 3 types of WBV protocols on a dual-plate WBV machine,including 1 dual-freq.ency WBV protocol(DFW) with the dominant leg receiving 35 Hz and the non-dominant leg receiving 45 Hz,and2 single-freq.ency WBV protocols(SFWs) with 35 Hz or 45 Hz provided to both legs(SFW35Hz and SFW45Hz) on 3 different ***:The results showed that all the vibration protocols significantly improved SJ and CMJ performances(SJ:p = 0.008;CMJ:p 0.05).In addition,only the DFW significantly improved COD ability(p = 0.001 for the pre–post comparison).Conclusion:A 4 min dual-freq.ency WBV session improved both vertical jumping and COD ability in rugby players,suggesting that this could be a potential warm-up protocol for athletes.

Owing to the novel physicochemical properties of graphene, materials such as graphene oxide （GO） are being developed for applications in various fields such as biomedicine. Nonetheless, considerable knowledge gaps still exist regarding the impact of GOs on environmental health and safety （EHS）. Thus far, its secondary toxicity, synergistic effects, and mal-adaption have not been focused much upon. Here, we show that at low concentrations （that did not directly result in significant cytotoxicity）, GO could greatly enhance metal toxicity in macrophages by altering their cellular priming state. Specificall）~ GO caused impairments to the cellular morphology and membrane integrity of macrophages, and remarkably enhanced the cellular uptake of Cd and other non-essential metal ions （such as Hg and Gd）. Furthermore, upon low-dose GO pre-treatment, the uptake of Cd at a non-toxic concentration brought about a remarkable amount of oxidative stress in macrophages, and ultimately resulted in increased cell death. Mechanistic investigations illustrated that GO pre-treatment triggered cell death through apoptosis because of Cd exposure. Overall this study＇s results reveal a new path for understanding the impact of GOs on EHS through the perspective of its synergistic and secondary effects, previously unidentified mechanisms via which nanomaterials might pose detrimental effects on organisms.

以大棚秋黄瓜为研究对象,采用大棚盆栽试验,设3个处理,处理1(T1)为早中晚三次增氧灌溉,处理2(T2)早上一次增氧灌溉,处理3(CK)为对照组(不增氧),研究探明增氧灌溉处理对大棚秋黄瓜种子萌发及幼苗生长的影响。各处理均采用调亏灌溉,常规施肥与管理,主要研究结果为:第3d高峰发芽速率T1、T2分别高出CK27.50%和26.25%,发芽势T1、T2分别高出CK 10.18%和9.72%,第7d发芽率T1、T2分别高出CK 9.72%和4.16%、发芽指数T1、T2分别高出CK 18.15%和14.18%,活力指数T1、T2分别高出CK 27.73%和22.06%,发芽整齐度T1、T2分别高出CK 36.04%和3.55%。因此,增氧对大棚秋黄瓜种子的种子发芽力指标、种子活力指标以及发芽整齐度均有显著影响。

Iatrogenic pneumothorax related to mechanical ventilation

Pneumothorax is a potentially lethal complication associated with mechanical ventilation. Most of the patients with pneumothorax from mechanical ventilation have underlying lung diseases; pneumothorax is rare in intubated patients with normal lungs. Tension pneumothorax is more common in ventilated patients with prompt recognition and treatment of pneumothorax being important to minimize morbidity and mortality. Underlying lung diseases are associated with ventilatorrelated pneumothorax with pneumothoraces occurring most commonly during the early phase of mechanical ventilation. The diagnosis of pneumothorax in critical illness is established from the patients' history, physical examination and radiological investigation, although the appearances of a pneumothorax on a supine radiograph may be different from the classic appearance on an erect radiograph. For this reason, ultrasonography is beneficial for excluding the diagnosis of pneumothorax. Respiration-dependent movement of the visceral pleura and lung surface with respect to the parietal pleura and chest wall can be easily visualized with transthoracic sonography given that the presence of air in the pleural space prevents sonographic visualization of visceral pleura movements. Mechanically ventilated patients with a pneumothorax req.ire tube thoracostomy placement because of the high risk of tension pneumothorax. Small-bore catheters are now preferred in the majority of ventilated patients. Furthermore, if there are clinical signs of a tension pneumothorax, emergency needle decompression followed by tube thoracostomy is widely advocated. Patients with pneumothorax related to mechanical ventilation who have tension pneumothorax, a higher acute physiology and chronic health evaluation Ⅱ score or Pa O2/Fi O2 < 200 mm Hg were found to have higher mortality.

AIM To investigate the association of chronic hepatitis B and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis with physical fitness in a Taiwan Residents military male *** We made a cross-sectional examination of this association using 3669 young adult military males according to cardiorespiratory fitness and hospitalization events recorded in the Taiwan Armed Forces study. Cases of chronic hepatitis B(n = 121) were defined by personal history and positive detection of hepatitis B surface antigen. Cases of nonalcoholic steatohepatitis(n = 129) were defined by alanine transaminase level > 60 U/L, liver ultrasound finding of steatosis, and absence of viral hepatitis A, B or C infection. All other study participants were defined as unaffected(n = 3419). Physical fitness was evaluated by performance in 3000-m run, 2-min sit-ups, and 2-min push-ups exercises, with all the procedures standardized by a computerized scoring system. Multiple linear regression analysis was used to determine the *** Chronic hepatitis B negatively correlated with 2-min push-up numbers(β =-2.49, P = 0.019) after adjusting for age, service specialty, body mass index, systolic and diastolic blood pressures, current cigarette smoking, alcohol intake status, serum hemoglobin, and average weekly exercise times. Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis was borderline positively correlated with 3000-m running time(β = 11.96, P = 0.084) and negatively correlated with 2-min sit-up numbers(β =-1.47, P = 0.040). CONCLUSION Chronic hepatitis B viral infection and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis affects different physical performances in young adult military males, and future study should determine the underlying mechanism.

Thecoronavirusdisease2019(COVID-19)pandemic continues to pose a global threat to the human population. Identifying animal species susceptible to infection with the SARS-CoV-2/HCoV-19 pathogen is essential for controlling the outbreak and for testing valid prophylactics or therapeutics based on animal model studies. Here,different aged Chinese tree shrews(adult group, 1 year old;old group, 5–6 years old), which are close relatives to primates, were infected with SARS-CoV-2. X-ray, viral shedding, laboratory, and histological analyses were performed on different days postinoculation(dpi). Results showed that Chinese tree shrews could be infected by SARS-CoV-2. Lung infiltrates were visible in X-ray radiographs in most infected animals. Viral RNA was consistently detected in lung tissues from infected animals at 3,5, and 7 dpi, along with alterations in related parameters from routine blood tests and serum biochemistry, including increased levels of aspartate aminotransferase(AST) and blood urea nitrogen(BUN). Histological analysis of lung tissues from animals at 3 dpi(adult group) and 7 dpi(old group) showed thickened alveolar septa and interstitial hemorrhage. Several differences were found between the two different aged groups in regard to viral shedding peak. Our results indicate that Chinese tree shrews have the potential to be used as animal models for SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Intravitreal aflibercept for rubeosis iridis secondary to proliferative diabetic retinopathy

The purpose of this article is to report a case with rubeosis iridis treated by intravitreal aflibercept. A 61-year-old man had iris neovascularization and scanty vitreous hemorrhage secondary to proliferative diabetic retinopathy in the right eye. Neither neovascularization of angle nor elevation of intraocular pressure was found. Single intravitreal al ibercept 2 mg injection was performed. Rubeosis iridis disappeared on the next day. Scattered retinal laser photocoagulation was added 1 week later. There was no recurrence after 3-month follow-up. Aflibercept may serve as another anti-vascular endothelial growth factor(anti-VEGF) for treating rubeosis iridis.
