effects of Rhodiola rosea supplementation on mental performance,physical capacity,and oxidative stress biomarkers in healthy men

Purpose： The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of chronic Rhodiola rosea （R. rosea） supplementation on mental and physical performance, as well as hormonal and oxidative stress biomarkers. Methods： Twenty-six healthy male students received either R. rosea extract （600 mg/day; RR） or placebo （pl） in a randomized double-blind trial. Prior to supplementation （Term I） and following 4 weeks of supplementation （Term II）, the students underwent psychomotor tests for simple and choice reaction time, included in the Vienna Test System. Also, the subjects performed VO2peak test. Blood samples were obtained before and after the test to measure the hormonal profile （cortisol, testosterone, and growth hormone）, as well as the biomarkers of oxidative stress （lipid hydroperoxides, total antioxidant capacity, and superoxide dismutase） and muscle damage （creatine kinase）. Results： R. rosea ingestion shortened reaction time and total response time. Moreover, a greater relative increase in the number of correct responses was observed in RR group as compared to the pl group. No changes in endurance exercise capacity and hormonal profile were observed after R. rosea ingestion. R. rosea ingestion raised plasma total antioxidant capacity. It did not, however, affect other measured parameters. Conclusion： Chronic R. rosea ingestion does not affect physical performance, but can improve the results of some psychomotor tests （simple and choice reaction time） in young, healthy, and physically active men. The improvements in mental performance, however, at least in our study, seem not to be related to changes in cortisol release or antioxidant activity of R. rosea extract. 高海拔条件下PODe/柴油着火与燃烧特性研究

基于柴油与PODe化学反应机理,构建了TRF-PODe化学反应动力学模型(包含219种组分、903个基元反应)并验证,开展了高海拔条件下PODe/柴油着火与燃烧特性数值模拟研究。结果表明:在高海拔低压力下,PODe增加了着火瞬时放热率,降低了着火最高温度对应时间;PODe对燃料着火起到促进作用,着火促进率最大值出现在负温度特性(NTC)区域范围内,且随着PODe掺混比例的增加而增大;高海拔条件下低温氧化中PODe增加了反应中OH·生成,促进nC7H16前期氧化,反应中羟基的最高摩尔分数随压力下降明显增加,使基元反应速率降低;高温条件下,PODe本身含氧增加了反应中的OH·的生成,降低了O_(2)参与生成OH·反应的比例,使更多的O_(2)能够氧化反应中的小分子,促进自由离子生成,提升反应活性,改善柴油机高海拔燃烧特性。

Continuous room temperature nanowire lasing from silicon-integrated optoelectronic elements requires careful optimisation of both the lasing cavity Q-factor and population inversion *** apply time-gated optical interferometry to the lasing emission from high-quality GaAsP/GaAs quantum well nanowire laser structures,revealing high Q-factors of 1250±90 corresponding to end-facet reflectivities of R=0.73±*** using optimised direct-indirect band alignment in the active region,we demonstrate a well-refilling mechanism providing a quasifour-level system leading to multi-nanosecond lasing and record low room temperature lasing thresholds(~6μJ cm^(−2) pulse−1)for Ⅲ-Ⅴ nanowire *** findings demonstrate a highly promising new route towards continuously operating silicon-integrated nanolaser elements.

Molecular oxygen abundance is a key parameter in understanding the chemical network of the interstellar *** estimate the molecular oxygen column density and abundance for a sample of Galactic massive star formation regions based on observations from the Submillimiter Wave Astronomy Satellite(SWAS)*** obtained an averaged O_(2)spectrum based on this sample using the(SWAS)survey data(O_(2),487.249 GHz,N=3-1,J=3-2).No emission or absorption feature is seen around the supposed central velocity with a total integration time of t_(total)=8.67×10^(3)hr and an rms noise per channel of 1.45 m *** a kinetic temperature T_(kin)=30 K,we derive the 3σupper limit of the O_(2)column density to be 3.3×10^(15)cm^(-2),close to the lowest values reported in Galactic massive star formation regions in previous *** corresponding O_(2)abundance upper limit is6.7×10^(-8),lower than all previous results based on SWAS observations and is close to the lowest reported value in massive star formation *** a galactic scale,our statistical results confirm a generally low O_(2)abundance for Galactic massive star formation *** abundance is also lower than results reported in extragalactic sources.

The estimation of covariance matrices is central in array signal processing systems. This note addresses complex covariance estimation for the situation, where the complex data are available only as independent pairwise sets （observations） corresponding to individual elements of the matrix. The formulation for the empirical estimate and the normal maximum likelihood estimate is developed for the general case of different sample sizes for each observation. The approach allows, for example, the estimate of the p by p covariance matrix of a p-port sensor array from a two-port measurement instrument.

Sounds Synthesis with Slime Mould of Physarum Polycephalum

This paper introduces a novel application of bionic engineering： a bionic musical instrument using Physarum polycephalum. Physarum polycephalum is a huge single cell with thousands of nuclei, which behaves like a giant amoeba. During its foraging behavior this plasmodium produces electrical activity corresponding to different physiological states. We developed a method to render sounds from such electrical activity and thus represent spatio-temporal behavior of slime mould in a form apprehended auditorily. The electrical activity is captured by various electrodes placed on a Petri dish containing the cultured slime mold. Sounds are synthesized by a bank of parallel sinusoidal oscillators connected to the electrodes. each electrode is responsible for one partial of the spectrum of the resulting sound. The behavior of the slime mould can be controlled to produce different timbres.

Cell Wall Lignin is Polymerised by Class Ⅲ Secretable plant Peroxidases in Norway Spruce

Class Ⅲ secretable plant peroxidases occur as a large family of genes in plants with many functions and probable redundancy. In this review we are concentrating on the evidence we have on the catalysis of lignin polymerization by class Ⅲ plant peroxidases present in the apoplastic space in the xylem of trees. Some evidence exists on the specificity of peroxidase isozymes in lignin polymerization through substrate specificity studies, from antisense mutants in tobacco and poplar and from tissue and cell culture lines of Norway spruce （Picea abies） and Zinnia elegans. In addition, real time （RT-）PCR results have pointed out that many peroxidases have tissue specific expression patterns in Norway spruce. Through combining information on catalytic properties of the enzymes, on the expression patterns of the corresponding genes, and on the presence of monolignols and hydrogen peroxide in the apoplastic space, we can show that specific peroxidases catalyze lignin polymerization in the apoplastic space of Norway spruce xylem.

Microwave-assisted catalyst-free hydrolysis of fibrous cellulose for deriving sugars and biochemicals

Microwave(MW)assisted catalyst-free hydrolysis of fibrous cellulose(FC,cellulolysis)at 200℃promoted a cellulose conversion o f ca.37.2%and quantitative production o f valuable C5/C6 sugars(e.g.,glucose)and the according platform biochemicals(e.g.,5-hydroxymethylfurfliral),corresponding to an overall selectivity o f 96.5%.Conversely,conventional hydrothermal cellulolysis under similar conditions was not effective,even after 24 h,carbonising the *** on the systematic study of MW-assisted cellulolysis,the specific interaction between water molecules and macroscopic FC under the MW irradiation was proposed,accounting for the interpretation o f the experimental *** kinetic energy o f water molecules under the MW irradiation facilitated the C-C(in the non-hindered surface-CH2OH groups)and C-O-C bond breaking(inside the cellulose cavities)in FC,producing primary cellulolysis products of xylose,glucose and cellobiose.
