AIM: To describe and compare corneal sensation and morphological changes of sub-basal corneal nerves by in vivo laser scanning confocal microscopy(LSCM) in herpes simplex virus(HSV) keratitis/uveitis and contralateral, clinically unaffected eyes. METHODS: A prospective clinical study included 30 HSV eyes and 30 contralateral eyes of 30 patients, diagnosed with unilateral HSV keratitis/uveitis. Both eyes underwent a complete ophthalmological examination, Cochet-Bonnet aesthesiometry and LSCM of the central cornea, using the Heidelberg Retina Tomograph III Rostock cornea Module. After 6 mo, the same examination of the HSV affected and contralateral, clinically unaffected eyes was ***: HSV eyes, as compared to contralateral eyes, demonstrated a significant decrease in mean corneal sensation(3.1±1.6 vs 5.3±0.8 cm), total nerve fibres number(5.7±4.4 vs 15.1±5.4), nerve branches(3.4±3.0 vs 8.4±4.7), main nerve trunks(2.3±1.6 vs 5.8±2.2), and nerve fibres density(7.5±5.6 vs 18.1±5.3 mm/mm2, Peyes in mean corneal sensation and nerve fibres parameters. After 6 mo, corneal sensation and sub-basal nerve fibres parameters were increased significantly, but did not reach the parameters of contralateral, clinically unaffected ***: corneal aesthesiometry and LSCM in HSV affected eyes reveals a significant decrease of corneal sensation and sub-basal nerve fibres which recovers at6 mo but does not reach the normal level.

Introduction: There are many types of retinal lesions: exudative, degenerative and post-traumatic. Some can lead to retinal detachment (RD). The treatment indicated for these neovascular diseases of the eye is retinal photocoagulation with the Argon laser. The aim of this study was to investigate retinal lesions treated with the Argon laser at IOTA University Hospital. Patients and Method: This was a prospective cross-sectional study over a 9-month period. All patients seen at CHU IOTA during our study period who presented with a retinal pathology treated with the Argon laser or a retinal detachment with a giant tear in the contralateral eye and who had given their consent were included. One session consisted of treating the maximum surface area of half a retina. Results: We collected 263 cases. The age group 40 to 60 years was the most represented with 48.7%. Diabetes was the most frequent antecedent with 47.1%. Neovessels were the most common type of lesion, accounting for 68.4% of cases. Pan-retinal photocoagulation was performed in 74.5% of patients. Conclusion: Retinal lesions represent a major risk of functional visual loss. Physical treatment with retinal photocoagulation has a curative effect on ischaemic lesions and a preventive effect on retinal detachment.

An integrated laser diode driver(LDD) driving an edge-emitting laser diode was designed and fabricated by 0.35 μm BiCMOS technology. This paper proposes a scheme which combines the automatic power control loop and temperature com-pensation for modulation current in order to maintain constant extinction ratio and average optical power. To implement tem-perature compensation for modulation current,a novel circuit which generates a PTAT current by using the injecting base current of a bipolar transistor in saturation region,and alternates the amplifier feedback loop(closed or not) to control the state of the current path is presented. Simulation results showed that programmed by choice of external resistors,the IC can provide modu-lation current from 5 mA to 85 mA with temperature compensation adjustments and independent bias current from 4 mA to 100 mA. Optical test results showed that clear eye-diagrams can be obtained at 155 Mbps,with the output optical power being nearly constant,and the variation of extinction ratio being lower than 0.7 dB.

In this review we evaluate evidence for three different hypotheses that explain how the corneal epithelium is maintained. The limbal epithelial stem cell(LESC)hypothesis is most widely accepted. This proposes that stem cells in the basal layer of the limbal epithelium, at the periphery of the cornea, maintain themselves and also produce transient(or transit) amplifying cells(TACs). TACs then move centripetally to the centre of the cornea in the basal layer of the corneal epithelium and also replenish cells in the overlying suprabasal layers. The LESCs maintain the corneal epithelium during normal homeostasis and become more active to repair significant wounds. Second, the corneal epithelial stem cell(CESC) hypothesis postulates that, during normal homeostasis, stem cells distributed throughout the basal corneal epithelium, maintain the tissue. According to this hypothesis, LESCs are present in the limbus but are only active during wound healing. We also consider a third possibility, that the corneal epithelium is maintained during normal homeostasis by proliferation of basal corneal epithelial cells without any input from stem cells. After reviewing the published evidence, we conclude that the LESC and CESC hypotheses are consistent with more of the evidence than the third hypothesis, so we do not consider this further. The LESC and CESC hypotheses each have difficulty accounting for one main type of evidence so we evaluate the two key lines of evidence that discriminate between them. Finally, we discuss how lineage-tracing experiments have begun to resolve the debate in favour of the LESC hypothesis. Nevertheless, it also seems likely that some basal corneal epithelial cells can act as long-term progenitors if limbal stem cell function is compromised. Thus, this aspect of the CESC hypothesis may have a lasting impact on our understanding of corneal epithelial maintenance, even if it is eventually shown that stem cells are restricted to the limbus as proposed by the

A 10 Gbit/s 16-km-long reconfigurable wavelength-division-multiplexing passive optical network(WDM-PON) is presented empowered by a low-cost multi-channel directly modulated laser(DML) module. Compared with the case using discrete devices in conventional scheme, the proposed DML module provides a cost-effective solution with reduced complexity. The clear eye diagram and the bit error rate(BER) of less than 2×10^(-7) with a sensitivity of-7 dB m are obtained. Due to the special packaging design, the crosstalk between channels under condition of simultaneous operation can be negligible.

AIM:To determine the corneal sensitivity recovery period after laser-assisted sub-epithelial keratectomy(LASEK)refractive surgery and investigate the effects of ablation depth on ***:In this study examinations were performed on 90 right eyes of 90 people(34 males and 56 females)with an age range of 20-35 and an average of 22.26±3.8 years old.A sensation of 5 corneal regions,including the center and 4 mid-peripheral regions,i.e.,nasal,inferior,temporal,and superior,each at a distance of 2 mm from the center of the cornea were measured with a Cochet-Bonnet esthesiometer device in 3-time points including before LASEK,1 and 3mo after the surgery,*** was performed on individuals with stabilized myopia of -1.00 to -7.00 diopters and astigmatism of less than 2.00 ***,the individuals were divided into three groups regarding ablation ***:The highest level of corneal sensitivity before surgery was related to the center of the cornea(59.1±7.76),and the highest level of corneal sensitivity loss was also related to this *** sensation of all measured corneal regions significantly reduced 1mo postoperatively and returned to their preoperative levels 3mo after surgery(mean of 5 corneal regions in levels of preoperation:58.2±6.48,1mo postoperation:57.3±5.84,3mo postoperation:58.2±5.49;Pcorneal sensitivity changes in the center and temporal regions(Pcorneal sensitivity in myopia and low astigmatism decreases after LASEK and reaches the preoperative level within *** depth of ablation during surgery affected the recovery of corneal sensitivity.
