This paper presents the development of a framework for the parametric design of tunnels using geographic information system (GIS)mapping and building information modelling (BIM). According to the framework, a parametric representation of each system component (e.g., layers of rock mass, size of excavation, topography, fault geometry, primary lining, secondary lining, rock bolts, etc.) can beincorporated in the GIS model with high levels of detail and used for the automatic generation of numerical models for the design oftunnel construction. This parametric evaluation allows the designer to consider several levels of detail for each component, for the effi-cient design and process optimization in conventional tunneling. Information between parametric analysis and numerical simulations canbe freely exchanged with significantly reduced computational effort while results can be exported into BIM. It is anticipated that the proposed framework could lead to a comprehensive, yet efficient analysis of complex conventional tunneling project using parametric evaluations at the early design stages.

Background: Obesity is a significant public health challenge. Its prevalence is increasing at an alarming rate globally. Numerous slimming products crowd the market, with each offering a proprietary formulation with statements of alleged efficacy. Within the EU, one such class is Medical Device, featuring a range of marine- and vegetal-based fibers as the functional ingredient. Methods: An analysis was performed to investigate and compare the lipid binding performance of three medical devices consisting of: 1) a polyglucosamine;2) a vegetal opuntia extract;and 3) a vegetal opuntia extract with vitamins using an industry-standard, validated test method. 0.5 gr of material from each product was studied. Results: The polyglucosamine exhibited a lipid binding capacity (691.7 g/g) more than 20 times the vegetal opuntia extracts. A significantly higher standard deviation (±12.1) was reported for the polyglucosamine medical device vs. the vegetal opuntia extracts (±1.3 - 4.8). However, the standard deviation reported for the former is approximately 1.7% of the mean value obtained from double determination, significantly smaller than that 2.5% - 15% observed for the extracts. Conclusions: Analysis of lipid binding indicated the polyglucosamine exhibited a substantially higher capacity than the vegetal opuntia samples. Further studies are needed to validate these in vitro results.

When the simulation takes account of dissipative mechanisms,*** conduction and viscosity,the shocks become smeared out to produce thin layers of rapidly and continuously varying energy,density,pressure and velocity rather than discrete surfaces of mathematical *** the mid twentieth century,Von Neumann and Richtmyer suggested the use of a viscous pressure term(bulk viscosity)in the equilibrium equations for ideal gases in order to examine the shock while avoiding numerical oscillations at the shock *** the bulk viscosity is included in the conservation equations,the comprehensive physics present a continuous solution satisfying the Rankine-Hugoniot ***,the published literature includes few engineering and research studies presenting the novel equilibrium equations in which the incorporation of bulk viscosity generates a continuous solution in keeping with conservation *** present work is aimed at demonstrating that the artificial bulk viscosity defined by Von Neumann and Richtmyer is also applicable to fluids described by a density-linear equation of state,that the novel equations present a continuous solution,and that a shock layer of the same order as the computational grid is *** the method has been employed and mathematically proven for onedimensional flow,it would seem to be just as relevant to the analysis of more complex flow dynamics and fluid structure interactions via an application of the Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian(ALE)formulation.

In this paper is illustrated a mathematical added variability of the classical Terzaghi primary consolidation equation(1923)considering independently as variables the Consolidation Coefficient Cv and as well the Height Hi of the consolidating Laboratory Consolidation Test soil sample in order to finally grasp the low permeability layer time *** is easy to show that,when the Cv variation is positive,each of these two added variabilities differentiations has as maximum a factor 2 related to the laboratory evaluated coefficient of consolidation,for a certain incremental load of reference in a Laboratory Consolidation *** this scope,it is analysed the overall behaviour of a typical clayey material,from the mineralogical point of view,namely especially either composed by lean clay with main kaolinite mineralogical content or fat namely with Illite mineralogical content or even very dilatant namely principally constituted by *** Montmorillonite variability with Cv is negative,and consequently the differentiation enhancement factor can become *** it is known so far,in normal conditions of a soft clay,a difference in Construction Values of the Coefficient of Consolidation is up to 23 times greater than laboratory evaluated results,and this according to the author’s experience,may be also mainly explained not starting from Laboratory Consolidation Test Data,but through a more general macroscopic behaviour of the soil underneath the newly loaded area,putting aside the case of temperature-induced *** conclusion,it is suggested how to model the analytical problem of the so modified Terzaghi Primary Consolidation differential equation in order to better manage the construction unknowns of the phenomenon.

It is well known that soft silty clayey and even peaty soils especially existing in Great River Deltas Swampy Areas,under important Earth Fill Embankment Construction experience huge and hardly bearable primary consolidations settlements along with the minor but not negligible consequent secondary consolidation *** order to properly manage these particular huge settlements environments,it is very important to follow up the settlements monitoring data,by a macroscopic soil volume interpretation along with some amendments namely some mathematical added variabilities of the classic Terzaghi Primary Consolidation Equation,which are examined in a companion paper recently published in this *** this paper some indications are given about how to face the macroscopic soil volume primary consolidation settlements,and especially it is suggested how to interpret the misleading laboratory consolidation test values of the coefficient of ***,some design alternative solutions are examined to grasp both the potential technical and economic benefits along with their consequent ***,this paper underlined the primary role of the supervision engineer to get a good estimate in the settlements forecasting and his related ability to understand the meaning of anomalous monitoring data and to timely make and match the primary consolidation settlements forecasting calculation adjustments.
