Automated Recovery of the 2012 Sumatera Aftershock Sequence Using Waveform Cross Correlation

We assess the performance of waveform cross correlation as applied to automatic and interactive processing of the aftershock sequence of the April 11, 2012 Sumatera Ms（IDC） = 8.2 earthquake. The XSEL （cross correlation standard event list） is compared to the REB （Reviewed Event Bulletin） issued by the IDC （International Data Centre）. The latter includes 1,181 aftershocks between April 11 and May 25. To automatically recover the sequence, sixteen aftershocks were selected from the IDC SEL3 （Standard Event List） available on April 13 and used as master events. Waveform templates from only seven IMS （International Monitoring System） array stations with the largest SNR （signal-to-noise ratio） for the main shock were used to calculate cross correlation coefficients. Approximately 620,000 arrivals were detected and then used to build events according to the IDC definition. After conflict resolution between event hypotheses with similar arrivals found by more than one master, all survived hypotheses populated the XSEL. The total number of distinct hypotheses was 4,924, with 2,763 hypotheses not matched by the REB, i.e. potentially new REB events. To evaluate the quality of the XSEL, we randomly selected a representative portion （-15%） from 2,763 hypotheses and reviewed them interactively according to standard IDC rules and guidelines. There were 119 new REB events built and 145 XSEL hypotheses rejected. Several frequency and probability density distributions have been constructed for all detections, the associated detections, the XSEL detections, the detections in the new REB, and rejected events.

Noise due to surface wind and temperature is a problem in infrasound. Efficiency of IMS network concerns scientists. It is obvious to find the causes of deficiencies of detection of infrasound station by studying background noise power with respect to the surface wind and the temperature. Data measured by MB2000 microbarometer of infrasound station I33MG are used for the study. Infrasound records are separated into 4 frequency bands centered respectively at: 1 Hz, 0.25 Hz, 0.0625 Hz and 0.0156 Hz. Effects of surface wind and temperature are studied by plotting the variations of the background noise power with respect to the temperature or wind speed in the four considered frequency bands and compared with the median of background noise power. The influence of temperature is manifested by a reduction in the number of low-frequency detection. The surface wind reduces the number of detection at a high frequency. An exponential function is proposed to predict the variations of the noise power in different observation frequencies and temperature and wind conditions. Infrasound observations at Syowa Station,East Antarctica:Implications for detecting the surface environmental variations in the polar regions

Characteristic infrasound waves observed at Antarctic stations demonstrate physical interaction involving environmental changes in the Antarctic continent and the surrounding oceans. A Chaparraltype infrasound sensor was installed at Syowa Station （SYO; 39°E, 69°S）, East Antarctica, as one of the projects of the International Polar Year （IPY2007-2008）. Data continuously recorded during the three seasons in 2008-2010 clearly indicate a contamination of the background oceanic signals （microbaroms） with peaks between 4 and 10 s observed during a whole season. The peak amplitudes of the microbaroms have relatively lower values during austral winters, caused by a larger amount of sea-ice extending around the Lutzow-Holm Bay near SYO, with decreasing ocean wave loading effects. Micro- baroms measurements are useful tool for characterizing ocean wave climate, complementing other oceanographic and geophysical data. A continuous monitoring by infrasound sensors in the Antarctic firmly contributes to the comprehensive nuclear-test-ban treaty （CTBT） in the southern high latitude, together with the Pan-Antarctic Observations System （PAntOS） under the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research （SCAR）. Detailed measurements of the infrasound waves in Antarctica, consequently, could be a new proxy for monitoring regional environmental change as well as the temporal climate variations in the polar regions.

Study on Sampling Technique of Atmospheric Radionuclide

Atmospheric radionuclide monitoring usually includes two sampling techniques, namely ultra-high volume aerosol samplers to collect at- mospheric particles by using filter media, and radioactive noble gas samplers to collect atmospheric noble gas based on adsorption method. Atmos- pheric sampling techniques have been researched in Northwest Institute of nuclear Technology since the comprehensive nuclear-test-ban treaty （CTBT） was signed in 1996. Several ultra-high volume aerosol samplers and some types of radioactive xenon isotopes samplers had been devel- oped. For the aerosol sampler, the sampling flow is between 450 and 800 m3/h, with the minimum detectable concentration （MDC） of 131I less than 5 pBq/m3. For the xenon sampler, the sampling capacity of xenon is more than 4 ml per day, with MDC of l=Xe less than 0.25 mBq/m3. After the nuclear accident of Fukushima in 2011, monitoring of the atmospheric radionuclide was carried out for 3 months at Xi＇an, and part of radionuclide was detected with concentrations hiaher than their backorounds in the period, includina 131I.134Cs. 137Cs and 133Xe.

Ghana's experience in the establishment of a national data center

The government of Ghana in a bilateral agreement with the Preparatory Commission for the comprehensive nuclear test-ban treaty organization （CTBTO） has established a National Data Center in Ghana with the aim of monitoring the testing of nuclear explosions. Seismic, hydroacoustic, radionuclide and infrasound methods are used for the monitoring. The data center was commissioned on 3 February, 2010 at the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission. At present Ghana does not have any operational, centralised data （seismic, hydroacoustic, radionuclide and infrasound） acquisition system with the capability of accessing data from other international stations. Hence, the need of setting up the National Data Center which would enable us constantly monitor, manage and coordinate both natural and man-made seismic activities in the country and around the globe, upload data to the International Data Center （IDC） as well as receive and use International Monitoring System （IMS） data and IDC products for treaty verification and compliance. Apart from these, the center also accesses and analyzes seismic waveforms relevant to its needs from the International Data Center; makes data available to its stakeholder institutions for earthquake disaster mitigation; reports on all aspects of disasters related to earthquake to the relevant government agencies that deal with disasters; makes recommendations to the government of Ghana on earthquake safety measures; provides information to assist government institutions to develop appropriate land and building policies. The center in collaboration with stakeholder agencies periodically organises public lectures on earthquake disaster risk mitigation.
