Assessing gully erosion and rehabilitation using multi temporal LiDAR DEMs:Case study from the Great Barrier Reef catchments,Australia

Millions of dollars are being spent on gully rehabilitation to help reduce excess fine sediment delivery to the Great Barrier Reef(GBR).There is an urgent need for(i)prioritisation of active gullies for rehabilitation and(ii)the development of methodologies to inform the effectiveness of remediation.In this study we analyse DEMs of Difference derived from 0.5 m resolution 2-3 year interval multi-temporal LiDAR data collected pre and post rehabilitation at three variable gully morphologies in the Burdekin catchment.Our analysis indicates that the highest annual average fine sediment erosion rates for the untreated control gullies occur at the linear gully(53.38 t ha^(-1)y^(-1))followed by linear-alluvial gully(34.24 t ha^(-1)y^(-1))and least at the alluvial gully(14.41 t ha^(-1)y^(-1)).The proportional loss or export of fine sediment from the gullies in their un-treated condition ranges from∼68 to 90%of what is eroded,and when the gullies are treated the proportion of fine sediment that is retained in the gully proportional to what is eroded increases to∼60%at all sites.Without pre-treatment baseline erosion rates,and additional post treatment LiDAR captures,it is difficult to quantify the treatment effectiveness.Our results offer insights in the erosion mechanisms within different geomorphic gully morphologies and rehabilitation effects in these erosional landforms.This study provides crucial knowledge of gully dynamics that can be coupled with other lines of evidence for better prioritisation of rehabilitation in the GBR catchments.

Since the inception of the United Nations’2030 Agenda,commonly known as the Sustainable Development Goals(SDGs),in2015,we have now reached the halfway point in this ambitious global initiative.However,progress towards the SDGs has veered significantly off track,partly due to key global changes such as the COVID-19 pandemic[1],necessitating an immediate acceleration of efforts[2,3](as shown in Fig.1a).While the SDGs represent a global consensus,the substantial work required to achieve them needs to be carried out at the national,regional,and local scales,where concrete and feasible actions must be taken to accelerate the SDG achievement within the 2030 timeline.This underscores the urgent need for science-driven transformations to fully achieve SDGs in the remaining seven years.Regrettably,the information necessary to support these transformations is still lacking,highlighting the pressing requirement for corresponding research endeavors.These endeavors should encompass gaining a comprehensive understanding of the current status of SDG implementations across varying scales,identifying the bottlenecks that hinder progress,setting priorities for implementation,and exploring pathways to expedite progress.

An Efficient Method to Estimate Admittance of Black-boxed Inverter-based Resources for Varying Operating Points

Traditional analytical approaches for stability assessment of inverter-based resources(IBRs),often requiring detailed knowledge of IBR internals,become impractical due to IBRs’proprietary nature.Admittance measurements,relying on electromagnetic transient simulation or laboratory settings,are not only time-intensive but also operationally inflexible,since various non-linear control loops make IBRs’admittance models operating-point dependent.Therefore,such admittance measurements must be performed repeatedly when operating point changes.To avoid time-consuming and cumbersome measurements,admittance estimation for arbitrary operating points is highly desirable.However,existing admittance estimation algorithms usually face challenges in versatility,data demands,and accuracy.Addressing this challenge,this letter presents a simple and efficient admittance estimation method for blackboxed IBRs,by utilizing a minimal set of seven operating points to solve a homogeneous linear equation system.Case studies demonstrate this proposed method ensures high accuracy across various types of IBRs.Estimation accuracy is satisfying even when non-negligible measurement errors exist.

Advancements in nanotechnology for the delivery of phytochemicals

Phytosomes(phytophospholipid complex) are dosage forms that have recently been introduced to increase the stability and therapeutic effect of herbal medicine. Currently, bioactive herbs and the phytochemicals they contain are considered to be the best remedies for chronic diseases. One promising approach to increase the efficacy of plant-based therapies is to improve the stability and bioavailability of their bio-active ingredients. Phytosomes employ phospholipids as their active ingredients, and use their amphiphilic properties to solubilize and protect herbal extracts. The unique properties of phospholipids in drug delivery and their use in herbal medicines to improve bioavailability results in significantly enhanced health benefits. The introduction of phytosome nanotechnology can alter and revolutionize the current state of drug delivery. The goal of this review is to explain the application of phytosomes, their future prospects in drug delivery, and their advantages over conventional formulations.

Gradient sparsification for efficient wireless federated learning with differential privacy

Federated learning(FL) enables distributed clients to collaboratively train a machine learning model without sharing raw data with each other. However, it suffers from the leakage of private information from uploading models. In addition, as the model size grows, the training latency increases due to the limited transmission bandwidth and model performance degradation while using differential privacy(DP)protection. In this paper, we propose a gradient sparsification empowered FL framework with DP over wireless channels, to improve training efficiency without sacrificing convergence performance. Specifically, we first design a random sparsification algorithm to retain a fraction of the gradient elements in each client’s local model, thereby mitigating the performance degradation induced by DP and reducing the number of transmission parameters over wireless channels. Then, we analyze the convergence bound of the proposed algorithm, by modeling a non-convex FL problem. Next, we formulate a time-sequential stochastic optimization problem for minimizing the developed convergence bound, under the constraints of transmit power, the average transmitting delay, as well as the client’s DP requirement. Utilizing the Lyapunov drift-plus-penalty framework, we develop an analytical solution to the optimization problem. Extensive experiments have been implemented on three real-life datasets to demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed algorithm. We show that our proposed algorithms can fully exploit the interworking between communication and computation to outperform the baselines, i.e., random scheduling, round robin, and delay-minimization algorithms.

The explosive growth of social media means portrait editing and retouching are in high demand.While portraits are commonly captured and stored as raster images,editing raster images is non-trivial and requires the user to be highly skilled.Aiming at developing intuitive and easy-to-use portrait editing tools,we propose a novel vectorization method that can automatically convert raster images into a 3-tier hierarchical representation.The base layer consists of a set of sparse diffusion curves(DCs)which characterize salient geometric features and low-frequency colors,providing a means for semantic color transfer and facial expression editing.The middle level encodes specular highlights and shadows as large,editable Poisson regions(PRs)and allows the user to directly adjust illumination by tuning the strength and changing the shapes of PRs.The top level contains two types of pixel-sized PRs for high-frequency residuals and fine details such as pimples and pigmentation.We train a deep generative model that can produce high-frequency residuals automatically.Thanks to the inherent meaning in vector primitives,editing portraits becomes easy and intuitive.In particular,our method supports color transfer,facial expression editing,highlight and shadow editing,and automatic retouching.To quantitatively evaluate the results,we extend the commonly used FLIP metric(which measures color and feature differences between two images)to consider illumination.The new metric,illumination-sensitive FLIP,can effectively capture salient changes in color transfer results,and is more consistent with human perception than FLIP and other quality measures for portrait images.We evaluate our method on the FFHQR dataset and show it to be effective for common portrait editing tasks,such as retouching,light editing,color transfer,and expression editing.

Geochemistry and depositional environment of fuchsite quartzites from Sargur Group,western Dharwar Craton,India

Meso-Neoarchean fuchsite quartzites are present in different stratigraphic positions of Dharwar Craton including the oldest(~3.3 Ga)Sargur Group of western Dharwar Craton.The present study deals with the petro-graphic and geochemical characteristics of the fuchsite quartzites from the Ghattihosahalli belt to evaluate their genesis,depositional setting and the enigma involved in the ancient sedimentation history.Their major mineral assemblages include quartz,fuchsite,and feldspars along with accessory kyanite and rutile.The geochemical com-positions are characterized by high SiO_(2),Al_(2)O_(3),low MgO,CaO,strongly enriched Cr(1326–6899 ppm),Ba(1165–3653 ppm),Sr(46–210 ppm),V(107–868 ppm)and Zn(11–158 ppm)contents compared to the upper continental crust(UCC).The UCC normalized rare earth element(REE)patterns are characterized by depleted light REE[(La/Sm)UCC=0.33–0.95]compared to heavy REE[(Gd/Yb)_(UCC)=0.42–1.65]with conspicuous positive Eu-anomalies(Eu/Eu^(*)=1.35–18.27)characteristic of hydrothermal solutions evidenced through the interlayered barites.The overall major and trace element systematics reflect a combined mafic-felsic provenance and suggest their deposition at a passive continental margin environ-ment.The comprehensivefield,petrographic,and geo-chemical studies indicate that these quartzites are infiltrated by Cr-richfluids released during high-grade metamorphism of associated ultramafic rocks.The Sargur and the subse-quent Dharwar orogeny amalgamated diverse lithounits from different tectonic settings,possibly leading to the release of Cr-richfluids and the formation of fuchsite quartzite during or after the orogeny.Thesefindings sug-gest a pre-existing stable crust prior to the Sargur Group and the link between orogenic events and various mineral deposits in the Dharwar Craton.

There are two factors,source composition and magmatic differentiation,potentially controlling W-Sn mineralization.Which one is more important is widely debated and may need to be determined for each individual deposit.The Xitian granite batholith located in South China is a natural laboratory for investigating the above problem.It consists essentially of two separate components,formed in the Triassic at ca.226 Ma and Jurassic at ca.152 Ma,respectively.The Triassic and Jurassic rocks are both composed of porphyritic and fine-grained phases.The latter resulted from highlydifferentiated porphyritic ones but they have similar textural characteristics and mineral assemblages,indicating that they reached a similar degree of crystal fractionation.Although both fine-grained phases are highly differentiated with elevated rare metal contents,economic W–Sn mineralization is rare in the Triassic granitoids and this can be attributed to less fertile source materials than their Jurassic counterparts,with a slightly more enriched isotopic signature and whole-rockεNd(226 Ma)of−10.4 to−9.2(2σ=0.2)compared withεNd(152 Ma)of−9.2 to−8.2(2σ=0.2)for the Jurassic rocks.The initial W-Sn enrichment was derived from the metasedimentary rocks and strongly enhanced by reworking of the continental crust,culminating in the Jurassic.

XRL-SHAP-Cache:an explainable reinforcement learning approach for intelligent edge service caching in content delivery networks

Content delivery networks(CDNs) play a pivotal role in the modern internet infrastructure by enabling efficient content delivery across diverse geographical regions. As an essential component of CDNs, the edge caching scheme directly influences the user experience by determining the caching and eviction of content on edge servers. With the emergence of 5G technology, traditional caching schemes have faced challenges in adapting to increasingly complex and dynamic network environments. Consequently, deep reinforcement learning(DRL) offers a promising solution for intelligent zero-touch network governance. However, the blackbox nature of DRL models poses challenges in understanding and making trusting decisions. In this paper,we propose an explainable reinforcement learning(XRL)-based intelligent edge service caching approach,namely XRL-SHAP-Cache, which combines DRL with an explainable artificial intelligence(XAI) technique for cache management in CDNs. Instead of focusing solely on achieving performance gains, this study introduces a novel paradigm for providing interpretable caching strategies, thereby establishing a foundation for future transparent and trustworthy edge caching solutions. Specifically, a multi-level cache scheduling framework for CDNs was formulated theoretically, with the D3QN-based caching scheme serving as the targeted interpretable model. Subsequently, by integrating Deep-SHAP into our framework, the contribution of each state input feature to the agent's Q-value output was calculated, thereby providing valuable insights into the decision-making process. The proposed XRL-SHAP-Cache approach was evaluated through extensive experiments to demonstrate the behavior of the scheduling agent in the face of different environmental inputs.The results demonstrate its strong explainability under various real-life scenarios while maintaining superior performance compared to traditional caching schemes in terms of cache hit ratio, quality of service(QoS),and space utilization.

二维层状材料及其范德华同质/异质结构的界面特性在探索新奇物理现象和优化器件性能方面起着至关重要的作用.尽管二维同质结构和异质结构的界面耦合问题已经引起了人们极大的研究兴趣,然而涉及二维层状材料与衬底之间界面耦合的研究却十分有限,这主要由于在二维层状材料-衬底界面实现直接探测仍存在挑战.目前,二维层状材料与衬底之间的界面耦合机制还存在诸多争议,需要引起更多的重视.本研究中,我们基于高温高真空原位拉曼光谱系统,通过监测单层WS2的低频拉曼振动模式,系统地研究了单层WS2与其支撑衬底之间的界面耦合机制.研究结果表明,界面间距和界面应力对单层WS2与衬底之间的界面耦合强度均有显著影响.更值得注意的是,我们发现引入适当的界面应力能够有效地增强样品与衬底之间的界面耦合强度.因此,通过简单地控制退火的冷却过程,我们成功地实现了对样品-衬底界面耦合的有效调控.我们的研究结果为理解二维层状材料与衬底之间的耦合关系提供了更加深入的见解,对基于二维半导体材料的高性能器件的设计和优化具有重要的指导意义.
