A Forbidden Web in a Quasi-Dissipative System

A simultaneous transition of the system nature from everywhere smooth and conservative to piecewise smooth and quasi-dissipative is observed in a kicked billiard when adjusting single controlling parameter. The transition induces the appearance of a special kind of fat fractal forbidden web, which grows up and cuts off more parts from the original conservative stochastic web so that the remnant transient web becomes increasingly thinner. We numerically show a power law σ∝βν, where σ is the fractal exponent of the forbidden web, β is the control parameter, and the scaling exponent ν = 0.288±0.007, which describes this process.

We report a crisis that is induced by an escape from a fat strange set formed by the forward images of an oscillating discontinuity borderline. It is analytically and numerically shown that the iteration lifetime obeys the universal power-law dependence on the controlling parameter and the scaling exponent takes an exceptional large value, i.e. ν = 1.72±0.04. The strange repeller, which appears after the crisis, is also a fat fractal. To our knowledge, this is the first example for a new mechanism that produces supertransients.

A self-consistent hybrid Monte Carlo fluid model is presented to describe the nitrogen dc glow discharge. The movement of fast electrons is simulated by the Monte Carlo method while the dynamics of slow electrons and ions is by fluid equations. The spatial features of the charged species and the corresponding electric field throughout the discharge have been calculated, which include the creation rates of ions and slow electrons, densities of the charged species, the electric field and the potential distribution. These closely related results can give a self-consistent explanation of the discharge characteristics throughout the space of nitrogen dc glow discharge. The calculated ion density is also compared with the corresponding experimental result.

Travelling hexagon patterns have been observed in dielectric barrier discharge in an air-argon mixture. The phase diagram of hexagon pattern appearance as functions of applied voltage and air concentration is given. The spatial frequency of hexagon pattern increases with increasing applied voltage and air concentration. The current waveforms of hexagon pattern also vary with the air concentration. The drift velocity of travelling hexagon pattern changes from 4mm/s to 18mm/s.

The discharge current and the inception voltage in a surface discharge device have been measured to investigate the influence of wall charges on the discharge characteristics in argon. The results show that the inception voltage decreases as the amplitude of the applied voltage Up increases. However, the sum of the inception voltage and the applied voltage almost keeps constant when Up is changed, due to the fact that the wall charges are generated in the discharge process. This phenomenon suggests that net electric field between the electrodes almost keeps constant when the amplitude of the applied voltage is changed. The electron temperature calculated by the intensity ratio of emitted spectral lines has been estimated to be less than 0.3eV and almost keeps constant under different amplitudes of the applied voltage. The result is consistent with nearly constant net field. The duty ratio of the discharge current increases as the amplitude of the applied voltage increases.

Influence of Inert Gas Pressure on Growing Rate of Nanocrystalline Silicon Film Prepared by Pulsed Laser Deposition

Nanocrystalline silicon film (nc-Si) was prepared by pulsed laser deposition in different inert gas atmospheres such as He, Ne and Ar. The influence of inert gas pressure on growing rate of the film was investigated. The results show that with increasing gas pressure, growing rate first increases and reaches its maximum and then decreases; the gas pressure at the maximum of growing rate is proportional to the reciprocal of atomic mass of gas. The rate maximum is 0.315Å/pulse when He gas pressure is 8.3Pa. The dynamic process is analysed theoretically by means of resputtering from the film surface and scattering of ablated particles. Furthermore, our results are compared with those in the case of Ag target.

Coherent structures in the CT-6B tokamak plasma turbulence are detected by using conditional averaging. The results show that the coherent structures are short-lived and do not propagate in the radial direction. The biorthogonal decomposition technique is adopted to analyse further the coherent structure in the turbulence. The time evolution and spatial distribution of the coherent structures are obtained.

A special dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) device consisting of two water electrodes has been designed. The temporal behaviour of the micro-discharge (filament) in the DBD in air at atmospheric pressure is measured by using an optical method. The nonsymmetrical characteristic of the filament has been discovered for the first time. We propose an equation regarding the discharge moment by considering the memory effect of the accumulated charge and the influence of the fluctuation. The results deduced from the equation give a good explanation of the experimental phenomenon, which show that the decay time constant of the accumulated charges is much larger than 100µs. The relative intensity of fluctuation amplitude is in the range 2-4% under the present experimental conditions.

A collisional radiative model based on the spin-orbit-split-arrays is used to determine the charge state distribution of gold plasmas. The ab initio atomic structure code of Cowan and the spin-orbit-split-array model were used to calculate all the emission spectra of the different gold species, and a non-local thermodynamic-equilibrium model was coupled to calculate the ion populations at a given plasma density and electron temperature. The charge state distribution and other plasma parameters were determined by comparing the experimental spectra with the theoretical simulated spectra of gold plasmas.
