Recent advances in iron-based sulfides electrocatalysts for oxygen and hydrogen evolution reaction

Increasing environmental pollution and shortage of conventional fossil fuels have made it urgent to develop renewable and clean energy sources. Electrocatalytic water splitting, with its abundant raw materials, simple process, and zero carbon emission, is considered one of the most promising processes for producing carbon-neutral hydrogen which has excellent energy conversion efficiency and high gravimetric energy density. Among them, oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalysts are critical to decreasing the intrinsic reaction energy barrier and boosting the hydrogen evolution efficiency. Therefore, it is imperative to develop and design low-cost, highly active, and stable OER and HER electrocatalysts to lower the overpotential and drive the electrocatalytic reactions. Transition metal sulfides, especially iron-based sulfides, have attracted extensive exploration by researchers as a result of its high abundance in the Earth's crust and near-metallic conductivity. Consequently, in this review, we systematically and comprehensively summarize the progress in the application of iron-based sulfides and their composites as OER and HER electrocatalysts in electrocatalysis. Detailed descriptions and illustrations of the special relationships among their composition, structure, and electrocatalytic performance are presented. Finally, this review points out the challenges and future prospects of iron-based sulfides in practical applications for designing and fabricating more promising iron-based sulfide OER and HER electrocatalysts. We believe that iron-based sulfide materials will have a wide range of application prospects as OER and HER electrocatalysts in the future.

Adaptive Tracking Control for Output-Constrained Switched MIMO Pure-Feedback Nonlinear Systems with Input Saturation

In this paper,an adaptive neural tracking control scheme for a class of uncertain switched multi-input multi-output(MIMO)pure-feedback nonlinear systems is proposed.The considered MIMO pure-feedback nonlinear system contains input and output constraints,completely unknown nonlinear functions and time-varying external disturbances.The unknown nonlinear functions representing system uncertainties are identified via radial basis function neural networks(RBFNNs).Then,the Nussbaum function is utilized to deal with the nonlinearity issue caused by the input saturation.To prevent system outputs from violating prescribed constraints,the barrier Lyapunov functions(BLFs)are introduced.Also,a switched disturbance observer is designed to make the time-varying external disturbances estimable.Based on the backstepping recursive design technique and the Lyapunov stability theory,the developed control method is verified applicable to ensure the boundedness of all signals in the closed-loop system and make the system output track given reference signals well.Finally,a numerical simulation is given to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed control method.

Proportional Current Sharing Based on Periodic Dynamic Event-driven H_(∞) Consensus in DC Microgrids with Power Coupling

Although the proportional current sharing has been widely studied,the heterogeneous characteristic of the different interfaced converters and power coupling terms among distributed generators(DGs)are rarely considered.Therefore,this paper proposes a secondary H_(∞)consensus method with a periodic dynamic event-driven scheme for dc microgrids with power coupling to accomplish the precise proportional current-sharing.It is useful for reducing carbon.First,a generalized converter is constructed through equivalent transformation between rectifier and boost converter.Moreover,the heterogeneous characteristic of the interfaced converters regarding different DGs,such as wind and solar generators,is embedded into controller design.Furthermore,the standard linear heterogeneous multi-agent system with power coupling term is built.On this basis,the problem of proportional current sharing is modified into the output consistency problem of multi-agent systems.Furthermore,the H_(∞)consensus approach is proposed to accomplish the precise proportional current sharing.Meanwhile,to shorten communication bandwidth,the periodic dynamic event-driven communication strategy is designed.Compared with traditional event-driven communication schemes,a lower communication frequency has been obtained through the proposed communication scheme.In addition,this communication scheme not only avoids Zeno-behavior,but also acquires the smallest sampling time interval.Finally,effectiveness of the proposed approach is verified by two test systems.

Fracture of two three-dimensional parallel internal cracks in brittle solid under ultrasonic fracturing

Similar to hydraulic fracturing(HF), the coalescence and fracture of cracks are induced within a rock under the action of an ultrasonic field, known as ultrasonic fracturing(UF). Investigating UF is important in both hard rock drilling and oil and gas recovery. A three-dimensional internal laser-engraved crack(3D-ILC) method was introduced to prefabricate two parallel internal cracks within the samples without any damage to the surface. The samples were subjected to UF. The mechanism of UF was elucidated by analyzing the characteristics of fracture surfaces. The crack propagation path under different ultrasonic parameters was obtained by numerical simulation based on the Paris fatigue model and compared to the experimental results of UF. The results show that the 3D-ILC method is a powerful tool for UF research.Under the action of an ultrasonic field, the fracture surface shows the characteristics of beach marks and contains powder locally, indicating that the UF mechanism includes high-cycle fatigue fracture, shear and friction, and temperature load. The two internal cracks become close under UF. The numerical result obtained by the Paris fatigue model also shows the attraction of the two cracks, consistent with the test results. The 3D-ILC method provides a new tool for the experimental study of UF. Compared to the conventional numerical methods based on the analysis of stress-strain and plastic zone, numerical simulation can be a good alternative method to obtain the crack path under UF.

Reconstructing interfacial manganese deposition for durable aqueous zinc-manganese batteries

Low-cost,high-satety,and broad-prospect aqueous zinc-manganese batteries(ZMBs) are limited by complex interracial reactions.The solid-liquid interfacial state of the cathode dominates the Mn dissolution/deposition process of aqueous ZMBs,especially the important influence on the mass and charge transfer behavior of Zn2+and Mn2+.We proposed a quasi-eutectic electrolyte(QEE) that would stabilize the reversible behavior of interracial deposition and favorable interracial reaction kinetic of manganese-based cathodes in a long cycle process by optimizing mass and charge transfer.We emphasize that the initial interfacial reaction energy barrier is not the main factor affecting cycling performance,and the good reaction kinetics induced by interfacial deposition during the cycling process is more conducive to the stable cycling of the battery,which has been confirmed by theoretical analysis,quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring,depth etching X-ray photon-electron spectroscopy,etc.As a result,the QEE electrolyte maintained a stable specific capacity of 250 mAh g-1at 0.5 A g-1after 350 cycles in zinc-manganese batteries.The energy density retention rate of the ZMB with QEE increased by 174%compared to that of conventional aqueous electrolyte.Furthermore,the multi-stacked soft-pack battery with a cathodic mass load of 54.4 mg maintained a stable specific capacity of 200 mAh g-1for 100 cycles,demonstrating its commercial potential.This work proves the feasibility of adapting lean-water QEE to the stable aqueous ZMBs.

隧道掘进机(TBM)应对超硬岩的破岩效率低一直是困扰TBM应用的共性难题。为探索高压水射流辅助TBM破岩的技术可行性,依托福建省龙岩市万安溪引水工程,采用自主研制的国内首台高压水力耦合破岩TBM“龙岩号”,开展现场掘进试验研究,介绍高压水力耦合破岩TBM的关键技术,验证高压水射流辅助TBM的破岩效果,分析高压水射流压力和刀盘转速对TBM贯入度、掘进速度和贯入度指数的影响规律。试验结果表明,高压水射流辅助破岩技术可提高TBM贯入度和岩体可掘性。随高压水射流压力的增加,TBM贯入度增大,贯入度指数减小,270 MPa压力下贯入度最大可增加64%;随刀盘转速的增加,高压水射流的辅助破岩作用减弱。现场掘进试验参数条件下,高压水射流压力270 MPa、刀盘转速6 r/min时对应的掘进速度最大。试验结果体现了高压水射流辅助破岩的技术优越性,研究成果可作为高压水射流辅助破岩TBM掘进参数选择的依据。

Exploring the Spatial Distribution and Drivers of Low Flows in the Basins of the United States

In recent years， with the change of temperature and the intensification of human activities， the quantitative and spatial patterns of low flows in basins have changed significantly， and the problem of low flows selection has emerged. To address this situation， this study selected 910 basins within the United States that reflect a wide range of climatic characteristics and human activities to assess the spatial patterns of regional low flows. The drivers of environmental change were identified from 40 basin attribute characteristics using various methods such as random forest. The spatial smoothness of low flows was also analyzed using the Moran’s I We found that the spatial low flow magnitude in the United States is characterized by a gradual decrease and then increase from east to west， similar to the precipitation distribution. Basin area and irrigated area were the main drivers of low flows， and the effects were positive. And it was found that low flow indicators with lower spatial smoothness were more difficult to associate with basin characteristics and to predict and select drivers using random forest models. Our study provides a new perspective to explore the impact of factors such as environmental change on low flow variability.

Sex control techniques are in great demand for aquaculture because of the huge benefits of mono-sex production.In a previous study on yellow catfish(Tachysurus fulvidraco),intersex individuals were produced by administrating 17α-methyltestosterone(MT)or aromatase inhibitor letrozole(LZ).The ovarian and testicular portions of intersexual gonads developed well and were completely separated,arousing our interest in producing self-fertilizable fish and clone-like fish populations.In this study,yellow catfish fry were treated with a combination of MT and LZ at a low dose(5 mg kg^(-1)MT,300 mg kg^(-1)LZ)at a low water temperature(27.0℃,mixed sex-producing temperature,LL group)and a high temperature(33.5◦C,male-producing temperature,HL group),and with a high dose(10 mg kg^(-1) MT,600 mg kg^(-1) LZ)at a low water temperature(LH group),during 12-65 days post-hatching,the critical period of sex differentiation.Both XX and XY intersex were produced with different percentages at the same time through co-treatment with MT and LZ,with or without the help of male-producing temperature.The highest percentage of XY intersex(53%in XY,36%in XX and XY)and XX intersex(47%in XX,25%in XX and XY)was produced in LH and HL groups,respectively.Results of gonadal morphology,histology,and sperm dynamic analysis indicate that some XX and XY intersex individuals were capable of self-fertilization through artificial insemination.The reproductive performance of these intersex individuals was then investigated by injecting spawning agents,dissecting gonads,and artificially fertilizing eggs with their own sperm.The XX,XY,and YY genotypic individuals were produced by the self-fertilization of XY intersex individuals.The present study successfully produced high percentages of XX and XY intersex and conducted self-fertilization by mating the eggs and sperm of a single intersex individual.Self-fertilization in fish will show great potential in aquaculture genetics and breeding,for example,generating highly homozygous(or"clonal")genetic material,produc

Smart fire alarm sensor(FAS)materials with mechanically robust,excellent flame retardancy as well as ultra-sensitive temperature-responsive capability are highly attractive platforms for fire safety application.However,most reported FAS materials can hardly provide sensitive,continuous and reliable alarm signal output due to their undesirable temperature-responsive,flame-resistant and mechanical performances.To overcome these hurdles,herein,we utilize the multi-amino molecule,named HCPA,that can serve as triple-roles including cross-linker,fire retardant and reducing agent for decorating graphene oxide(GO)sheets and obtaining the GO/HCPA hybrid networks.Benefiting from the formation of multi-interactions in hybrid network,the optimized GO/HCPA network exhibits significant increment in mechanical strength,e.g.,tensile strength and toughness increase of~2.3and~5.7 times,respectively,compared to the control one.More importantly,based on P and N doping and promoting thermal reduction effect on GO network,the excellent flame retardancy(withstanding~1200℃flame attack),ultra-fast fire alarm response time(~0.6 s)and ultra-long alarming period(>600 s)are obtained,representing the best comprehensive performance of GO-based FAS counterparts.Furthermore,based on GO/HCPA network,the fireproof coating is constructed and applied in polymer foam and exhibited exceptional fire shielding performance.This work provides a new idea for designing and fabricating desirable FAS materials and fireproof coatings.

Dynamic Modeling Framework of Sediment Trapped by Check-Dam Networks:A Case Study of a Typical watershed on the Chinese Loess Plateau

Check-dam construction is an effective and widely used method for sediment trapping in the Yellow River Basin and other places over the world that are prone to severe soil erosion.Quantitative estimations of the dynamic sediment trapped by check dams are necessary for evaluating the effects of check dams and planning the construction of new ones.In this study,we propose a new framework,named soil and water assessment tool(SWAT)–dynamic check dam(DCDam),for modeling the sediment trapped by check dams dynamically,by integrating the widely utilized SWAT model and a newly developed module called DCDam.We then applied this framework to a typical loess watershed,the Yan River Basin,to assess the time-varying effects of check-dam networks over the past 60 years(1957–2016).The DCDam module generated a specific check-dam network to conceptualize the complex connections at each time step(monthly).In addition,the streamflow and sediment load simulated by using the SWAT model were employed to force the sediment routing in the check-dam network.The evaluation results revealed that the SWAT-DCDam framework performed satisfactorily,with an overestimation of 11.50%,in simulating sediment trapped by check dams,when compared with a field survey of the accumulated sediment deposition.For the Yan River Basin,our results indicated that the designed structural parameters of check dams have evolved over the past 60 years,with higher dams(37.14%and 9.22%increase for large dams and medium dams,respectively)but smaller controlled areas(46.03%and 10.56%decrease for large dams and medium dams,respectively)in recent years.Sediment retained by check dams contributed to approximately 15.00%of the total sediment load reduction in the Yan River during 1970–2016.Thus,our developed framework can be a promising tool for evaluating check-dam effects,and this study can provide valuable information and support to decision-making for soil and water conservation and check-dam planning and management.
