Degrading river network due to urbanization in Yangtze River Delta

Evolution of river systems under the background of human activities has been a heated topic among geographers and hydrologists. Spatial and temporal variations of river systems during the 1960s-2010s in the Yangtze River Delta （YRD） were investigated based on streams derived from the topographic maps in the 1960s, 1980s and 2010s. A list of indi- ces, drainage density （Dd）, water surface ratio （WSR）, ratio of area to length of main streams （R）, evolution coefficient of tributaries （K） and box dimension （D）, were classified into three types （quantitative, structural, and complex indices） and used to quantify the variations of stream structure. Results showed that：（1） quantitative indices （Dd, WSR） presented de- creasing trend in the past 50 years, and Dd in Wuchengxiyu, Hangjiahu and Yindongnan have decreased most, about 20%. Structurally, the Qinhuai River basin was characterized by sig- nificant upward R, and K value in Hangjiahu went down dramatically by 46.8% during the 1960s-2010s. Decreasing tendency in D was found dominating across the YRD, and de- creasing magnitude in Wuchengxiyu and Hangjiahu peaks for 7.8% and 6.5%, respectively in the YRD. （2） Urbanization affected the spatial pattern of river system, and areas with high level of urbanization exhibited least Dd （2.18 km/km2）, WSR （6.52%）, K （2.64） and D （1.42）, compared to moderate and low levels of urbanization. （3） Urbanization also affected the evo- lution of stream system. In the past 50 years, areas with high level of urbanization showed compelling decreasing tendency in quantitative （27.2% and 19.3%） and complex indices （4.9%） and trend of enlarging of main rivers （4.5% and 7.9% in periods of the 1960s-1980s and the 1980s-2010s）. In the recent 30 years, areas with low level of urbanization were detected with significant downward trend in Dd and K. （4） Expanding of urban land, construction of hydraulic engineering and irrigation and water conservancy activities were the main means which degraded the

A Study on the Distribution and Utilization of Recreational Resources Along the Grand Canal Culture Belt

With the construction of Grand Canal Culture Belt being upgraded to a national strategy,the authors used GIS and other analytical techniques to give an overview of 2,834 recreational resource points distributed in 49 prefecture-level administrative units of eight provinces or cities along the Grand Canal Culture Belt,analyzed the features of their quantitative and spatial distribution,finding that:(ⅰ) the recreational resources along the Grand Canal are spatially related to the major river systems,lakes and arteries of communication;(ⅱ) the recreational resources along the Grand Canal are generally distinguished by a spatial agglomeration of "two poles and two subcenters",in which the natural recreational resources are distributed in the pattern of "three points and one line" while the cultural recreational resources are distributed with a notable feature of *** that basis,the authors proposed several suggestions about the utilization of recreational resources along the Grand Canal Culture Belt:(ⅰ) Establishing a system of diversified recreational products by adapting to local conditions;(ⅱ) building national scenic byways along the Grand Canal by relying on major river systems and arteries of communication;(ⅲ) giving priority to the development of four recreational sections of the Grand Canal and foster core growth poles.

Water sources for typical desert vegetation in the Ebinur Lake basin

Responses of greenhouse gas fluxes to experimental warming in wheat season under conventional tillage and no-tillage fields

Understanding the effects of warming on greenhouse gas（GHG, such as N2O, CH4 and CO2 ）feedbacks to climate change represents the major environmental issue. However, little information is available on how warming effects on GHG fluxes in farmland of North China Plain（NCP）. An infrared warming simulation experiment was used to assess the responses of N2O, CH4 and CO2 to warming in wheat season of 2012–2014 from conventional tillage（CT） and no-tillage（NT） systems. The results showed that warming increased cumulative N2O emission by 7.7% in CT but decreased it by 9.7% in NT fields（p 〈 0.05）. Cumulative CH4 uptake and CO2 emission were increased by 28.7%–51.7% and 6.3%–15.9% in both two tillage systems,respectively（p 〈 0.05）. The stepwise regressions relationship between GHG fluxes and soil temperature and soil moisture indicated that the supply soil moisture due to irrigation and precipitation would enhance the positive warming effects on GHG fluxes in two wheat ***, in 2013, the long-term drought stress due to infrared warming and less precipitation decreased N2O and CO2 emission in warmed treatments. In contrast, warming during this time increased CH4 emission from deep soil depth. Across two years wheat seasons, warming significantly decreased by 30.3% and 63.9% sustained-flux global warming potential（SGWP） of N2O and CH4 expressed as CO2 equivalent in CT and NT fields, respectively. However, increase in soil CO2 emission indicated that future warming projection might provide positive feedback between soil C release and global warming in NCP.

Response of soil hydrological processes to soil rock fragments:A global Meta-analysis

The rock fragment(RF)has been widely observed in the soil solum or on the soil *** regulates soil hydrological processes(SHPs)and thus has great impacts on soil and water ***,responses of SHPs to RF characteristics(position,content,coverage area,mulching thickness,and size)remain *** on the dataset extracted from 168 published studies,effects of RF characteristics on SHPs(soil loss rate,evaporation rate,surface runoff rate,infiltration rate,soil water content,and soil water storage)and saturated hydraulic conductivity(Ks)were discussed in this *** showed that RFs completely inserted into the soil solum(CO_INS)improved the Ks by 6.9%,runoff rate by 12.8%,and soil loss rate by 22.3%,while it reduced the evaporation rate by 30.7%,infiltration rate by 15.4%,and soil water content by 9.9%.With the RF content(kg kg−1)increasing,its effects on these SHPs were *** RFs resting on the surface and partially covering soil surface(PA_COV)improved the infiltration rate but reduced the evaporation rate by 36.9%,surface runoff rate by 25.4%,and soil loss rate by 59.3%.This in turn enhanced soil water content and ***,as the RF coverage(%in area)increasing,the cross-sectional area of water flow decreased,and thus the infiltration rate *** RFs completely mulch on the soil surface(CO_MUL)reduced the evaporation rate by 59.5%and infiltration rate by 76.5%but improved the soil water content and *** the infiltration rate,the effects of CO_MUL on SHPs were strengthened as mulch thickness(cm)*** RFs partially embedded into soil surface(PA_EMB)promoted surface runoff rate by 15.3%,soil loss rate by 34.7%,and soil water content by 24.3%,but reduce the infiltration ***,the surface runoff rate was reduced at high embedded coverage due to increased tortuosity of water *** addition,the RF size exerted weaker effects on SHPs than RF positions,content,coverage,and mulch *** findi

As a type of tourist destination,Protected Areas(PAs)have been the focus of recreation ecology research since their *** contradiction between recreation and ecological protection of PAs in China is more prominent than in other countries because of China’s large population density and complex PA management ***,a review of related research is urgent for promoting sustainable tourism development of PAs in *** quantitative analysis with a literature review,this study analyzed the historical development process and current research topics of recreation ecology in China’s PAs,focusing on the impacts of tourism on the natural environment,environmental management of tourism,and the development of different types of sustainable tourism in ***,the research gaps are as follows:(1)studies on impact mechanism of tourism based on long-term monitoring are lacking;(2)the existence of numerous local communities in most of the PAs in China is usually ignored;(3)insufficient attention has been paid to the impacts of tourism infrastructure construction;(4)assessments of sustainable PA tourism are ***,this paper presents implications for future research and serves as a reference for PA tourism management in other countries.

On the topographic entity-oriented digital elevation model construction method for urban area land surface

Spatial patterns of interprovincial mountain geographical names in China and implications for regional governance

Suffering from fragile environment, poor accessibility and infrastructure, as well as social,political and economic marginality, the interprovincial mountain geographical entities are difficult areas for the regional governance in *** analyzing the spatial patterns and the influencing factors of the interprovincial mountain geographical names(IMGNs), the goal of this research is to clarify the geographical features of IMGNs and offer alternatives for the management of interprovincial mountain regions in China. The spatial visualization,the analysis of spatial agglomeration and the influencing factors of IMGNs were all implemented under a geographical information system. Results showed that there were 6869 IMGNs in China according to the database of "China's Second National Survey of geographical Names(2014-2018)",including 4209 mountain geographical names, 1684 mountain peak geographical names and 976 the other mountain geographical names. Hunan Province had the largest number of names while Shanghai had the smallest number of names. In addition, the spatial variance of the mountain peak names and the mountain names were larger than that of the other mountain geographical names, and the IMGNs showed a significant clustering phenomenon in the southern part of China. The relative elevation and the population had an impact on the distribution of the IMGNs. The largest number of the names occurred where the relative elevation was between 1000-2000 m and where the population was between 40-50 million. Density of unnamed interprovincial mountain geographical entities declined from west to east in China. The analysis of generic names of different types of IMGNs implied that the naming of IMGNs is inconsistent. Based on these analyses, it is suggested that the government should take the IMGNs as management units, strengthen the naming of unnamed interprovincial mountain geographical entities, standardize the generic names of IMGNs and identify areas of poverty based on

Geochemical characterization of loess-paleosol sequences:Comparison between the upper reaches of the Hanjiang and Weihe river valleys,China

This paper aims to compare the geochemical characteristics of loess-paleosol sequences in the upper reaches of the Hanjiang and Weihe river valleyswhich are located in the semi-humid temperate zone and humid subtropical zonerespectively. The Mituosi（MTS） profile in the upper reaches of the Hanjiang River valley and the Yaohecun（YHC） profile in the Weihe River valley were selected for this comparative research. The stratigraphic characteristicscompositionchemical weathering intensityleaching rates of Ca and Namobility of major elementsand transport features of Na and Fe were analyzed with respect to depth and compared between the two profiles. This study reached the following conclusions.（1） The composition of the loess-paleosol sequences in two regions are quite similar to the average composition of the upper continental crust（UCC）indicating that the loess in the two regions came from multiple sources and was mixed well. Thereforethe loess in the two regions is considered aeolian loess.（2） Compared with the loess-paleosol sequence in the Weihe River valleythe loess-paleosol sequence in the upper reaches of the Hanjiang River valley features a darker color; a higher chemical index of alteration（CIA） value; higher leaching rates of Na and Ca; higher migration ratio（relative to K） of AlSiMgand Na; and lower migration ratio of Fe and Ca. This evidence indicates that the loess-paleosol sequence in the humid subtropical environment experienced stronger chemical weathering intensity than the loess-paleosol sequence in the semi-humid temperate zone.（3） Both the YHC profile and MTS profile record a period of climate deterioration at 6000–5000 a BP. The period punctuated the mid-Holocene Climatic Optimum（8500–3100 a BP） in the study area.

Spatiotemporal evolution of urban air quality and socioeconomic driving forces in China

Air pollution is a serious problem brought by the rapid urbanization and economic development in China, imposing great challenges and threats to population health and the sustainability of the society. Based on the real-time air quality monitoring data obtained for each Chinese city from 2013 to 2014, the spatiotemporal characteristics of air pollution are analyzed using various exploratory spatial data analysis tools. With spatial econometric models, this paper further quantifies the influences of socioeconomic factors on air quality at both the national and regional scales. The results are as follows：（1） From 2013 to 2014, the percentage of days compliance of urban air quality increased but air pollution deteriorated and the worsening situation in regions with poor air quality became more obvious. （2） Changes of air quality show a clear temporal coupling with regional socioeconomic activities, basically ＂relatively poor at daytime and relatively good at night＂. （3） Urban air pollution shows a spatial pattern of ＂heavy in the east and light in the west, and heavy in the north and light in the south＂. （4） The overall extent and distribution of regional urban air pollution have clearly different characteristics. The formation and evolution of regional air pollution can be basically induced as ＂the pollution of key cities is aggravated--pollution of those cities spreads-- regional overall pollution is aggravated--the key cities lead in pollution governance--regional pollution joint prevention and control is implemented--regional overall pollution is reduced＂. （5） At the national level, energy consumption, industrialization and technological progress are the major factors in the worsening of urban air quality, economic development is a significant driver for the improvement of that quality. （6） Influenced by resources, environment and the development stage, the socioeconomic factors had strongly variable impacts on air quality, in both direction and intensity in diffe
