Blockchain adoption or contingent sourcing? Advancing food supply chain resilience in the post-pandemic era

In the post-pandemic era, food supply chains and firms therein are facing unprecedented severe challenges, because once infection is detected, numerous products must be recalled or abandoned, and both suppliers and retailers in the supply chain suffer enormous loss. To survive under the pandemic, retailers have adopted different sourcing strategies, such as contingent sourcing, which, in turn, affect the upstream suppliers and hence the resilience of the whole supply chain. With the rapid development of digital technologies, retailers nowadays can utilize blockchain as a reliable and efficient way to reduce product risk and hence advance the resilience of food supply chains by improving product traceability and inspection accuracy, and making sourcing transparent. In this paper, we develop a game-theoretic model to investigate the interrelation between the retailer’s decisions on blockchain adoption and sourcing strategies. We consider that a retailer originally orders from a risky supplier while conducting an imperfect inspection to detect infected products before selling. The retailer may speculatively keep on ordering from the risky supplier or adopt contingent sourcing by ordering from an alternative safe supplier. The retailer also has an option to implement blockchain to improve the inspection accuracy and product traceability. We derive the optimal retail prices under different sourcing strategies with and without blockchain adoption and then analyze the incentives for sourcing strategy and blockchain adoption. Then, we identify the conditions of an all-win situation for food retailer, supplier, supply chain resilience, and consumers with/without government subsidy. Finally, we extend to consider the situation that some consumers have health-safety concerns and preferences for blockchain adoption.

The government subsidy plays an important role in the recycling and remanufacturing process of a closed-loop supply chain.This paper focuses on the impacts of different patterns of government subsidy on the chain members'profits and the environment.Furthermore,we develop three models in a supply chain including a manufacturer,a retailer and a collector,namely(1)the government invests public service advertisement to stimulate the remanufacturing process(Model AS);(2)the government offers only monetary subsidy to the collector(Model MS);(3)the government allocates the subsidy into two parts,namely both advertisement and monetary subsidy(Model HS).We find that,no matter which subsidy pattern the government adopts,both the manufacturer and the collector are beneficiaries of the government subsidy,and that such subsidizing activity is definitely conducive to the environmental sustainability.Taking into account the chain members,profits and the environmental impact,the optimal hybrid subsidy scheme(Model HS)is more beneficial than that in both Model MS and Model AS,which can be attributed to the combination of the incentives provided by the public service advertisement and the price attraction by the monetary subsidy.We also find that,for single advertisement and monetary subsidy,the amount of government subsidy will decide their merits and demerits.The direct monetary subsidy in Model MS will have a greater influence regarding to the supply quantity of used products than the mere advertisement subsidy in Model AS when the subsidy is relatively large.

Order Timing for Manufacturers with Spot Purchasing Price Uncertainty and Demand Information Updating

In this paper we study the competitive order timing decisions of two manufacturers with demand forecasting updating and uncertain raw material price.Manufacturers can order the raw materials early when the market is highly uncertain with a fixed wholesale price(Contract procurement)or late when the market is less uncertain with an uncertain raw material price(Spot trading).Different from most existing literature,we assume the spot price and the market demand is correlated.We find that in the monopoly setting the manufacturer prefers the contract procurement to the spot trading when the unit wholesale price for the contract procurement is not greater than the expected unit spot price of the raw material.In the duopoly setting,we characterize the equilibria of a strategic order timing game in which manufacturers choose when to buy the raw materials.We find that when the demand during the contract procurement stage and the spot price uncertainty is small both manufacturers prefer the contract procurement strategy and when the demand during the contract procurement stage and the spot price uncertainty is large both manufacturers prefer the spot trading.When the demand during the contract procurement stage and the spot price uncertainty is high and purchase costs do not decline too severely over time,the unique equilibrium of this game is that one manufacturer chooses contract procurement to order early and the other chooses spot trading to order late.Further,we find that the correlation of spot purchasing price and the market demand signal during the contract procurement stage will weaken the advantages of spot trading strategy.When the spot purchasing price and the market demand signal during the contract procurement stage are not correlated,manufacturers prefer spot trading under the highly volatile spot trading price,fluctuating demand,and high information precision.

Many ocean transportation hub systems consist of two container ports that share the container handling business in the area. The container flow passing through a port is the main measurement of the port＇s competitiveness. In this paper we adopt a Hotelling model to study the container port competition in a so-called ＂dual gateway-port system＂. The system contains two ports and two terminals, one belonging to each port. The two governments in which the two ports are located compete on cargo fees and the two terminals determine service price and service quality. We study two models with different levels of competition between the terminals. In the ftrst model, the two terminals are owned by two different operators and in the second model, the two terminals are centralized under one operator. The second model exists in practice but is not well studied in the literature. We derive the cargo fee, terminal service price, and service quality equilibria for these two models. We investigate the competition outcome sensitivity with a numerical study. The numerical results reveal that governments prefer terminals to compete with each other. If the terminals do not have competitive advantages in their service quality, then terminal centralization brings more profits to the terminal operator than the competition case.

A conceptual framework for understanding the intrinsic contestation of cultural heritage tourism in Chinese qiaoxiang

Cultural heritage in Chinese qiaoxiang is constructed where Chinese and foreign cultures gather,connecting overseas Chinese with their country of origin.However,conficts concerning this type of heritage comes out frequently,such as house reconstruction clash,host-guest conficts and destructive competition in heritage tourism.The economic and cultural duality of heritage is perceived as the source of intrinsic contestation in heritage tourism,and conficts related to diferent types of heritage may take on diferent appearances and causes.Extant tourism studies have generalised cultural heritage in Chinese qiaoxiang,neglecting the unique characteristics of the diaspora and their corresponding infuence on heritage protection and utilisation,that makes the reasons for these conficts remain unclear.By answering the basic question of what heritage is,this research proposes an analytical framework to understand the intrinsic contestation of cultural heritage tourism in Chinese qiaoxiang.The paper points out that the contradiction between‘ancestral root culture’and modernity and between fow and stillness is the trigger for intrinsic contestation.The paper also summarises the core issues in conficts that need further discussion by answering the questions of‘what is heritage’,‘whose heritage’and‘how to interpret heritage’.The core issues include heritage selection and identifcation,the commercialisation of‘home’,heritage interpretation and so on.

Improving the resilience of maritime supply chains: The integration of ports and inland transporters in duopoly markets

The adverse impact of the outbreak of COVID-19 has reduced ports’ operational efficiency. In addition, ports and inland logistics providers are generally independent of each other and difficult to work together, which leads to time loss. Thus, as the core player, ports can integrate with inland logistics providers to improve the efficiency and resilience of maritime supply chains. This study examines the strategic options of two competing maritime supply chains consisting of ports and inland logistics providers. We investigate the impact of cooperation between ports and inland logistics providers and government regulation on the maritime supply chain by comparing members’ optimal pricing and overall social welfare under centralized, decentralized, and hybrid scenarios. Results indicate that the hybrid scenario is an equilibrium strategy for maritime supply chain, although this strategy is not optimal for governments seeking to improve supply chain resilience and maximize social welfare. Furthermore, observations show that through government economic intervention, both seaborne supplies can be incentivized to adopt an integrated strategy, and business and society can achieve a win–win situation.

Unified Variable Selection for Varying Coefficient Models with Longitudinal Data

Variable selection for varying coefficient models includes the separation of varying and constant effects,and the selection of variables with nonzero varying effects and those with nonzero constant effects.This paper proposes a unified variable selection approach called the double-penalized quadratic inference functions method for varying coefficient models of longitudinal data.The proposed method can not only separate varying coefficients and constant coefficients,but also estimate and select the nonzero varying coefficients and nonzero constant coefficients.It is suitable for variable selection of linear models,varying coefficient models,and partial linear varying coefficient models.Under regularity conditions,the proposed method is consistent in both separation and selection of varying coefficients and constant coefficients.The obtained estimators of varying coefficients possess the optimal convergence rate of non-parametric function estimation,and the estimators of nonzero constant coefficients are consistent and asymptotically normal.Finally,the authors investigate the finite sample performance of the proposed method through simulation studies and a real data analysis.The results show that the proposed method performs better than the existing competitor.

This paper examines how independent directors’social capital,as measured by their social network,affects corporate fraud.We find that firms with wellconnected independent directors are less likely to commit fraud,supporting our monitoring effect hypothesis.This result is robust to a battery of tests.Further analyses show that the effect is stronger for firms with a relatively poor legal environment,for firms whose independent directors face strong reputation incentives and when independent directors are audit committee members.Moreover,we explore a potential economic mechanism of the effect and observe that well-connected independent directors are associated with less absenteeism and more dissension.Overall,our findings suggest that independent directors’social capital plays an important role in corporate governance.

We develop a new conservative Allen-Cahn phase-field model for diblock copolymers in this paper by using the Allen-Cahn type gradient flow approach for the classical Ohta-Kawaski free energy.The change in volume fraction of two composing monomers is eliminated by using a nonlocal Lagrange multiplier.Based on the recently developed stabilized Scalar Auxiliary Variable method,we have further developed an effective numerical scheme to solve the model.The scheme is highly efficient and only two linear and decoupled equations are needed to solve at every time step.We then prove that the numerical method is unconditionally energy stable,the stability and accuracy of the new scheme are demonstrated by numerous numerical examples conducted.By qualitatively comparing the equilibrium solution obtained by the new model and the classic Cahn-Hilliard model,we illustrate the effectiveness of the new model.
