Modeling the potential distribution of Argentine shortfin squid in the southwest Atlantic Ocean

The Argentine shortfin squid Illex argentinus is an economically important short-lived species widely distributed in the southwest Atlantic *** abundance and distribution of *** are associated with climate change and environmental *** potential distribution of *** was modeled with various environmental variables including sea surface temperature(SST),sea surface height(SSH),chlorophyll a,sea surface salinity(SSS),net primary productivity(NPP),mixed layer depth(MLD),eddy kinetic energy(EKE),and photosynthetically active radiation(PAR)using the maximum entropy(MaxEnt)approach during the peak fishing seasons(January–April).The habitat suitability index(HSI)was defined as the probability of species emergence from the MaxEnt model and the area of HSI≥0.6 was regarded as *** indicate that the predicted habitat correlated with the actual fishing position,with similar trends in the percentages of suitable habitats and catch per unit effort(CPUE)of *** from January to ***,SST,SSH,PAR,and MLD were identified critical environmental variables for the distribution of *** addition,the median of preferred ranges of the critical environmental variables were concentrated within the suitable habitats of *** Area under the Receiver Operating Characteristic Curve(AUC)was greater than 0.96 for all four *** in latitudinal and longitudinal gravity centers(LATG and LONG)of fishing effort were consistent with latitudinal and longitudinal gravity centers(LATG_H and LONG_H)of the *** findings suggest that the MaxEnt model is an effective tool to predict the potential distribution of ***,SST,SSH,PAR,and MLD should be given with more extensive attention in predicting the potential distribution of ***,as they are important environmental indicators that can help decision-makers search for the fishing ground of *** in the Southwest Atlantic.

Pelagic fish are the most abundant species in upwelling regions,contributing 25%of total global fisheries ***-driven changes in the marine environment play a crucial role in their population *** Chilean jack mackerel(Trachurus murphyi)as an example,this study conducted simulations to quantify the impacts of environmental variations on the stock assessment.A habitat-based surplus production model was developed by integrating suitable habitat area into the model parameters carrying capacity(K)and intrinsic growth rate(r),with a suitable habitat area serving as the proxy for the environmental conditions for Chilean jack mackerel in the Southeast Pacific *** dynamics of Chilean jack mackerel stock and fisheries data were simulated,and four assessment models with different configurations were built to fit simulated data,with or without considering environmental *** results indicated that Joint K-r model,which integrated both parameters with the suitable habitat area index,outperformed the others by coming closest to the‘true'population *** habitat variations in the estimation model tended to overestimate biomass and underestimate harvest rate and reference *** observation and process error,the results were estimated with bias,while FMSY is relatively *** research illustrates the importance to consider random errors and environmental influences on populations,and provides foundation guidelines for future stock assessment.

Polydopamine（PDA） Functionalized Eutectic Gallium–Indium（EGaIn）Nanoparticles as a Distortable Fluorescent Sensor for Pb2+ Detection

Fluorescent nanoparticles offer promising applications for bioimaging due to their exceptional attributes, including heightened fluorescence brightness and prolonged photo-stability, surpassing those of traditional fluorescent dyes. However, the selection of suitable materials and surface functionalization strategies for the synthesis of efficient fluorescent nanoparticles remains a significant challenge in this field. Here, we report a facile synthesis method of fluorescent nanoparticles, which is rationally designed by coating polydopamine（PDA） on eutectic Gallium-Indium(EGaIn, a liquid metal（LM）) under ultrasonic waves to prepare the fluorescent PDA/LM nanoparticles. The fluorescence intensity of the PDA/LM nanoparticles is eightfold greater than that of the pristine PDA nanoparticles and can be quenched by Pb2+. It demonstrates that the PDA/LM nanoparticles exhibit superior analytical performance for Pb2+over a linear range from 10 to 100 μg/L, with a detection limit of 3 μg/L. This probe can be used to detect Pb2+in different vessels.

Large-Scale Environmental DNA Metabarcoding Shows a Comprehensive Fish Community in the East China Sea:Do Water Layer and Habitat Matter?

sRNA113 regulates Pseudomonas plecoglossicida motility to affect immune response against infection in pearl gentian grouper

Small RNAs(sRNAs) are a class of molecules capable of perceiving environmental changes and exerting posttranscriptional regulation over target gene expression,thereby influencing bacterial virulence and host immune responses. Pseudomonas plecoglossicida is a pathogenic bacterium that poses a significant threat to aquatic animal health. However, the regulatory mechanisms of sRNAs in P. plecoglossicida remain unclear. This study focused on sRNA113, previously identified as a potential regulator of the fliP gene, a key component of the lateral flagellar type III secretion system. To investigate the effects of sRNA113on P. plecoglossicida virulence, as well as its role in regulating pathogenic processes and host immune responses, mutant strains lacking this sRNA were generated and analyzed. Deletion of sRNA113 resulted in the up-regulation of lateral flagellar type III secretion system-related genes in P. plecoglossicida, which enhanced bacterial swarming motility, biofilm formation,and chemotaxis ability in vitro. In vivo infection experiments with pearl gentian grouper revealed that sRNA113 deletion enhanced the pathogenicity of ***. This heightened virulence was attributed to the up-regulation of genes associated with the lateral flagellar type III secretion system, resulting in higher bacterial loads within host tissues. This amplification of pathogenic activity intensified tissue damage, disrupted immune responses, and impaired the ability of the host to clear infection, ultimately leading to mortality. These findings underscore the critical role of sRNA113 in regulating the virulence of P. plecoglossicida and its interaction with host immune defenses. This study provides a foundation for further exploration of sRNAmediated mechanisms in bacterial pathogenesis and hostpathogen interactions, contributing to a deeper understanding of virulence regulation and immune evasion in aquatic pathogens.

The diurnal variation in the sun's altitude alters the red-to-blue light spectrum ratio under identical water *** study explores how juvenile steelhead trout(Oncorhynchus mykiss)(initial weight:34.67 g±2.69 g)responds to these fluctuating light conditions,focusing on growth,daily activity levels,and energy *** 16 weeks,the experiment was conducted to examine six lighting scenarios:12 h white light followed by 12 h darkness(12W);12 h blue light followed by 12 h darkness(12B);12 h red light followed by 12 h darkness(12R);1.5 h blue light,9 h red light,and again 1.5 h blue light followed by 12 h darkness(3B9R);3 h blue light,6h red light,and again 3 h blue light followed by 12 h darkness(6B6R);and 12 h combined blue and red lights followed by 12 h darkness(T12BR).The findings reveal that the 3B9R lighting condition notably enhanced specific growth rate(SGR),feed conversion efficiency(FCE),and growth energy allocation,while diminishing daily activity levels in steelhead ***,under the 6B6R condition,there was a significant reduction in SGR and FCE,indicating that growth was *** the 12R condition,despite the high activity and respiratory energy loss,the trout exhibited improved SGR and FCE with reduced fecal energy *** study suggests that 3B9R and 12R lighting conditions might be beneficial in commercial steelhead trout farming,potentially lowering costs and boosting *** results offer valuable insights for the application of supplementary lighting technology in salmon aquaculture.

Nanoplastic(NP)contaminants are receiving increasing attention due to the harm they can cause to aquatic organisms and their accumulation in the human body through the food *** goal of this study was to evaluate the oxidative stress caused by NPs on the clams Meretrix meretrix and Sinonovacula *** were exposed to three concentrations of fluorescently labeled polystyrene NPs(PS-NPs;0,0.1,and 1 mg L^(-1))for 7 d followed by a 3 d recovery *** activities of antioxidant enzymes,such as catalase(CAT),superoxide dismutase(SOD),glutathione peroxidase(GPx)and the content of malonaldehyde(MDA)were measured in the digestive gland,gills,and mantle *** showed that the SOD activity in the gills of *** was significantly higher than that of the control at day 1,and PS-NPs exposure inhibited the CAT activity in the gills and SOD and GPx activities in the *** to low or high concentrations of PS-NPs increased the activities of both CAT and GPx in the gills of *** at day *** oxidative damage was more severe in the digestive gland of *** and in the mantle of *** based on MDA level,and it returned to normal after *** biomarker response,index version 2(IBRv2)values showed that the gills were more sensitive to PS-NPs than mantle and digestive ***,the oxidative stress by PS-NPs depended on exposure time,dose,organ,and species.

Application of vertically integrated sampling approach to study of new production via ^(234)Th -^(238)U disequilibria

The spatial and temporal distributions of new production vary largely in different sea areas. To understand the level of new production in the sea area studied better, an estimate of new production must be obtained in large spatial and temporal scales. The ~234Th/ ~238U disequilibrium is an effective method for the study of new production. Two sampling strategies, vertically integrated sampling ap proach based on trapezoidal integration principle and discrete layer sampling approach, were compared in the studies of the xiamen Bay and the northern South China Sea. The scavenging fluxes and removal fluxes of ~234Th and the residence times for dissolved and particulate ~234Th were calculated. The coinci dent results from two Sampling approach suggest that vertically integrated sampling approach is not only effective and reliable, but also significantly reduces the number and volume of samples. It allows us to study new production by ba ^(234)Th - ^(238)U disequilibria in large spatial scale.
