Long-emission carbon dots(CDs) is triggering immense enthusiasm on account of their intrinsic merits of high chemical stability and excellent optical *** this study,a facile and rapid approach was developed for the preparation of barium-doped carbon dots(Ba-CDs) with yellow fluo rescence emission and high quantum *** chemistry and the chemical architecture of the Ba-CDs was revealed under various spectroscopic *** work provides more insights into the effects of charge transfer caused by Ba heteroatoms,which is considered as the most challenging step in the investigation on luminescence ***,the prepared Ba-CDs were successfully applied as fluorescent probes in the detection of trace water in organic solvents(ethanol,isopropanol,acetone,tetrahydrofuran).Comparing with traditional fluorescent probes for water detection in organic solvents,Ba-CDs detection provides a more sensitive,much faster and more economical approach.

AIM To assess the insulating effect of a poloxamer 407(P407)-based gel during microwave ablation of liver adjacent to the *** We prepared serial dilutions of P407, and 22.5%(w/w) concentration was identified as suitable for ablation procedures. Subsequently, microwave ablations were performed on the livers of 24 rabbits(gel, saline, control groups, n = 8 in each). The P407 solution and 0.9% normal saline were injected into the potential space between the diaphragm and liver in experimental groups. No barriers were applied to the controls. After microwave ablations, the frequency, size and degree of thermal injury were compared histologically among the three groups. Subsequently, another 8 rabbits were injected with the P407 solution and microwave ablation was performed. The levels of alanine aminotransferase(ALT), aspartate aminotransferase(AST), blood urea nitrogen(BUN) and creatinine(Cr) in serum were tested at 1 d before microwave ablation and 3 and 7 d after operation. RESULTS In vivo ablation thermal injury to the adjacent diaphragm was evaluated in the control, saline and 22.5% P407 gel groups(P = 0.001-0.040). However, there was no significant difference in the volume of ablation zone among the three groups(P > 0.05). Moreover, there were no statistical differences among the preoperative and postoperative gel groups according to the levels of ALT, AST, BUN and Cr in serum(all P > 0.05).CONCLUSION Twenty-two point five percent P407 gel could be a more effective choice during microwave ablation of hepatic tumors adjacent to the diaphragm. Further studies for clinical translation are warranted.

The relationship between structural parameters and antibacterial biofilm activity for alkyl rhamnoside as a novel amphiphilic material

In the present study, we aimed to explore the structure-activity relationship for the new amphiphilic material rhamnoside with antibacterial biofilm activity, and provide the basis for selecting rhamnoside with the optimum antibacterial biofilm activity. A series of alkyl rhamnosides with different carbon chain lengths were obtained by a simple and effective synthesis method. The structure was characterized by ~1H NMR spectrum, and their critical micelle concentration(CMC) was measured by fluorescence probe method. The hydrophilic and lipophilic balance(HLB) value was obtained by calculation. The minimal inhibitory concentration(MIC) of Staphylococcus aureus was determined by the broth double dilution method. The effect of biofilm inhibition and biofilm disruption was assayed by crystal violet method. The results showed that with the increase of carbon chain length, the CMC and HLB of alkyl rhamnosides displayed a linear downward trend, indicating that the lipophilicity and surface activity of the alkyl rhamnoside were increased. At the same time, the antibacterial activity in vitro produced the maximum, ie, 12-hydroxydecanoyl rhamnoside had the strongest antibacterial activity in vitro. Similarly, this material also exhibited the strongest antibacterial biofilm activity in vitro. The results of this study demonstrated that the most potent active material was obtained through the structure-activity relationship and it could be applied antibacterial biofilms in clinical practice.

Metabolism study has been carried out on 1-hydroxy-2,3,5-trimethoxyxanthone （HM-1） and 1-hydroxy-2,3,4,7- tetramethoxyxanthone （HM-2）, which are two biologically active ingredients isolated from the Tibetan herb, Halenia elliptica D. Don., in rat liver microsomes in vitro. A method of high performance liquid chromatography coupled to ion trap time-of-flight mass spectrometry （LCMSn-ESI-IT-TOF） was applied to analyze metabolites of HM-1 and HM-2 on line, and five metabolites were identified containing 1,5-dihydroxy-2,3-dimethoxyxanthone （HM-5）, 1,7-dihydroxy-2,3,4-trimethoxyxanthone （HM-9）, 1,4, 7- trihydroxy-2,3-dimethoxyxanthone （HM-10）, 1,4-dihydroxy-2,3,7-trimethoxyxanthone （HM-11） and 1,2-dilaydroxy-3,4,7- trimethoxyxanthone （HM-12）. Among these metabolites, HM-9, HM-11, and HM-12 were isomers mutually. The results indicated that HM-1 and HM-2 occurred Phase I metabolic reaction of demethylation in rat microsomes in vitro.

Vulvar intraepithelial neoplasia （VIN） is a relatively uncommon disease that includes all of the precancerous lesions of vulvar malignancies with an incidence of approximately 2.5 per 100 000 *** 2004,the International Society for the Study of Vulvovaginal Diseases （ISSVD） abolished the old VIN grading system and introduced a two-tier classification for squamous VIN：the usual type and the differentiated type;the term VIN applied only to histologically ＆quot;high-grade＆quot; squamous lesions （old terms VIN 2 and VIN 3）.1 The two types of VIN differ in etiology,morphology,biology,clinical features and malignant *** usual type VIN （uVIN）,which is associated with HPV infection,is the most comrnon subtype,accounting for more than 80% of all VIN ***,the old 3-grade system of the VIN terminology is still used in most of the hospitals in *** this presentation,we categorized the patients with the ISSVD 2004 classification standard and attempted to describe the clinical features and the outcome of surgical treatment of uVIN using the retrospective data from three academic hospitals in China.

A comparison of the management models of protected areas between China and the southern Africa region

A comparison of the management models of protected areas between China and the African south region allows reading and evaluating the similarities and differences in the use of management model as a management tool for protected areas and specifi- cally some positive and negative features of the management approaches in these two regions. Previous to this study it verified the designation of protected areas as increasing at a faster rate than ever before, comparatively much faster now in China than southern Africa regions. With the aim of evaluating similarities and differences in the use of management model as a management tool for pro- tected areas in China and southern Africa Region, both qualitative and quantitative data were collected. Qualitative data were mainly from policy documents, scientific articles and magazine reports, whereas quantitative （secondary data） statistical data from Interna- tional union for Conservation of Nature Resources （IUCN） and World Database on Protected Areas （WDPA）. In view of the data sources above, the study found that in China all the protected areas are state owned whilst in southern Africa regions there are some protected areas that are privately owned; also that the models or typology of governance applied are successful for the fact that they both combine co-management or collaborative management, community-conserved areas and private protected areas that are subject to greater success and can help design planning and management than those who use exclusively government management. To this, the study concluded that the use of management model is influenced by the type of governance a country applies to its reserved areas.

The human gut microbiota is an important environmental factor for human health with evolutionarily conserved roles in immunity,metabolism,development,and behavior of the *** organisms are claimed to offer several functional properties including stimulation of immune *** purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of a probiotic supplementation on adult volunteers who have contracted the common cold four or more times in the past *** study is a single center,doubleblind,randomized,controlled,prospective *** received a probiotic drink containing Lactobacillus paracasei(at least 3×10^7 colony forming units(CFU)ml^-1),Lactobacillus casei 431®(at least 3×10^7 CFU ml1)and Lactobacillus fermentium PCC®(at least 3×10^6 CFU ml^-1)or an identical placebo without probiotics for a 12-week study *** consumption of probiotics significantly reduced the incidence of upper respiratory infection(p<0.023)and flu-like symptoms with an oral temperature higher than 38℃(p<0.034)as compared to the placebo *** that consumed probiotics demonstrated a significantly higher level of IFN-g in the serum(p<0.001)and sIgA in the gut(p<0.010)as compared to the placebo group and a significant higher level of serum IFN-g(p<0.001)and gut sIgA(p<0.001)as compared to their baseline test *** contrast,there were no significant differences in the serum IL-4,IL-10,IgA,IgG or IgM between the probiotics and the placebo *** of this study demonstrated that probiotics were safe and effective for fighting the common cold and influenza-like respiratory infections by boosting the immune system.
