Effects of UV-B irradiation on isoforms of antioxidant enzymes and their activities in red alga Grateloupia filicina(Rhodophyta)

Macroalgae in a littoral zone are inevitably exposed to UV-B irradiance. We analyzed the effects of UV-B on isoenzyme patterns and activities of superoxide dismutase （SOD）, peroxidase （POX）, catalase （CAT）, and ascorbate peroxidase （APX） of red algae Grateloupia filicina （Lamour.） C. Agardh. The activities of SOD, CAT, and APX changed in response to UV-B in a time- and dose-dependent manner. POX activity increased significantly under all three UV-B treatments. The enzymatic assay showed three distinct bands of SODI （Mn-SOD）, SODII （Fe-SOD）, and SODIII （CuZn-SOD） under a low （Luv） and medium （Muv） dose of UV-B irradiation, while SODI and SODIII activities decreased significantly when exposed to a high dose of UV-B irradiation （Huv）. The activity of POX isoenzymes increased significantly after exposure to UV-B, which is consistent with the total activity. In addition, a clear decrease in activity of CATIV was detected in response to all the three doses of UV treatments. Some bands ofAPX isoenzyme were also clearly influenced by UV-B irradiation. Correspondingly, the daily growth rate declined under all the three exposure doses, and was especially significant under Muv and Huv treatments. These data suggest that, although the protection mechanisms of antioxidant defense system are partly inducible by UV-B to prevent the damage, *** has incomplete tolerance to higher UV-B irradiation stress.

Developing a bridge capping layer between perovskite and hole transport layer materials（HTMs） in the n-i-p perovskite solar cells（pero-SCs） is an effective approach to modify the morphology of HTMs and passivate the perovskite ***, we select the quinoxaline-based bifunctional passivation agent, quinoxalin-6-yl-methylamine hydrochloride（Qx MACl）,as the bridging layer, and a D-A copolymer PBQ12 containing the same quinoxaline unit as an HTM for the n-i-p pero-SCs. Due to the π-π stacking among the common quinoxaline units in the bridge layer and HTM, Qx MACl induces the π-π stacking of the PBQ12 film and improves the film morphology of HTMs with better conductivity. Additionally, Qx MACl can effectively passivate the perovskite surface, and PBQ12 possesses appropriate energy levels and high hole mobility. The pero-SCs based on FAPbI3with PBQ12/Qx MACl treatment showed a higher power conversion efficiency（PCE） of 24.05% and outstanding stability, maintaining 95.4% and 92.1% of its initial PCE after 750 h of storage and after over 800 h of thermal annealing at 85 °C, respectively. To further enhance the PCE of the PBQ12/Qx MACl-based devices, we developed a non-metal ion dopant for the PBQ12 HTM. Through trace doping of PBQ12 HTM by the non-metal ion dopant, the PCE of the PBQ12/Qx MACl-based devices reached 25.24%（the calibrated PCE of 24.55% by the National Institute of Metrology, China）.

Environmental contamination has become a global problem of increasing intensity due to the exponential growth of industrialization. One main debated issue is the metal contamination of rivers receiving Acid Mine Drainage(AMD) from active/abandoned mines. In order to assess the quality of lotic systems, diatoms are commonly used, as their assemblage modifies on the basis of changes in environmental parameters. Benthic diatom changes were analyzed along the metal-impacted Gromolo Torrent(Liguria, NW Italy) with the aim of understanding the effects of input from the abandoned Libiola Cu mine. The results support the hypothesis that metals from AMD lead to massive changes in diatoms, resulting in low biological diversity and in a shift of dominance, passing from the genera Cymbella and Cocconeis to more tolerant and opportunistic species, such as Achnanthidium minutissimum and Fragilaria rumpens. The high concentrations of labile metals, measured through Diffusion Gradients in Thin-films(DGT) immediately downstream of the two AMD inputs in the torrent, corresponded to a sudden decrease in the presence of diatoms, indicating the possible reaching of acute toxic levels. In particular,A. minutissimum dominated the mining area and was positively correlated with Cu and Zn;whereas F. rumpens bloomed downstream of this area, where the metal content was diluted,and was positively correlated with As and Pb. Finally, an important abundance of Nitzschia palea and teratological forms of A. minutissimum and F. rumpens were observed downstream from the mine, indicating that metals may have an important impact on diatoms up to the torrent mouth.

Organochlorine pesticide （OCP） concentrations in tree bark from the upper Yellow River region were determined. Total OCP concentrations ranged from 2.7 to 82 ng/g dw, with a mean of 20 ng/g dw. Concentrations of total （E） DDTs （0.49-37 ng/g dw）, HCHs （0.55-4.5 ng/g dw）, and HCB （0.1-1.0 ng/g dw） were much higher than the other OCPs and accounted for 89% of the YOCP concentrations. p,p＇-DDT was the dominant member of the DDT pesticide group and [5-HCH was the dominant HCH isomer. The p,p＇-DDT/p,p＇-DDE and ct-HCH/y-HCH ratios suggested that there were recent DDT and y-HCH releases. OCP concentrations in the air were estimated from the tree bark, and the estimated median 3ZDDTs, EHCHs, and HCB concentrations in the air were 0.09, 0.14, and 0.024 pg/m3, respectively. The relationship between total OCP concentrations and socioeconomic and natural environment indices were assessed using multiple linear regression analysis, and a regression equation including all these factors was obtained. Population density and tertiary industry were the two dominant factors that appeared to affect OCP concentrations in the upper Yellow River region.

The pollen wall is a solid and variously sculptured structure. This pattern is determined inside a tetrad. During meiosis, the callose wall is formed outside of the meiocyte/microspore to form a tetrad. Then, primexine is deposited between the callose wall and the microspore plasma membrane which will become undulated. The sporopollenin deposits on top of the undulated membrane and develops into the pollen wall pattern, while the callose wall is gradually degraded. In recent years, much progress has been made in the study of pollen wall pattern formation, at both molecular and genetic levels. In this review,we summarize these achievements mainly in Arabidopsis.

The fantastic range of animal coloration is produced by pigment particles of colored material or microscopic struc- tures in scales, bristles or feathers that give rise to brilliant iridescent colors. In mammals, except for a few exceptions involving nanoor micro-scale structural color （e.g., the blue faces of male baboons）, fur color is determined by the pigment melanin. Melanin is synthesized and stored in melanosomes, a lysosomal organelle of melanocyte, and transferred to adjacent keratinocytes and hairs. There are two types of melanin： eumelanin （black to brown） and pheomelanin （red to yellow）. The amount, ratio and distribution of eumelanin and pheomelanin in hair determine the coat color of an animal： everything from bright white to light cream to red to iet black.

Prpf4 （pre-mRNA processing factor 4）, a key component of spliceosome, plays critical roles in pre-mRNA splicing and its mutations result in retinitis pigmentosa due to photoreceptor defects. In this study, we characterized a zebrafish prpf4t243 mutant harboring a Tol2 transposon-based gene trap cassette in the third intron of the prpf4 gene. Cells in the brain and spinal cord gradually undergo p53-dependent apoptosis after 28 hpf in prpf4t243 mutants, suggesting that a widespread function of prpf4 in neural cell survival. In addition, prpf4 is essential for survival of posterior lateral line primordial （pLLP） cells, prpf4 deficiency perturbs Fgf, Wnt/β-catenin and chemokine signaling pathways and impairs pLLP migration. RNA-Seq analysis suggests that prpf4 deficiency may impair spliceosome assembly, leading to compensatory upregulation of core spliceosomal genes and alteration of pre-mRNA splicing. Taken together, our studies uncover an essential role of prpf4 in pre-mRNA splicing, cell survival and pLLP migration.
