MOF synthesis using waste PET for applications of adsorption, catalysis and energy storage

Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) as one of non-degradable wastes has become a huge threat to the environment and human health. chemical Recycle of PET is a sustainable way to release 1,4-benzenedicarboxylic acid (BDC) the monomer of PET as common used organic linker for synthesis of functional Metal-organic-frameworks (PET-derived MOFs) such as UiO-66, MIL-101, etc. This sustainable and costeffective "Waste-to-MOFs" model is of great significant to be intensively investigated in the past years. Attributes of substantial porosity, specific surface area, exposed metal centers, uniform structure, and flexible morphology render PET-derived MOFs are well-suited for applications in adsorption, energy storage, catalysis, among others. Herein, in the present work, we have summarized recent advances in synthesis of PETderived MOFs using ex-situ and in-situ methods for typical applications of adsorption, catalysis and energy storage. Despite those improvements in synthesis methods and potential applications, challenges still remain in development of green and economical routes to fully utilize waste PET for massive manufacture of valuable MOF materials and chemicals. This review provides insights into the conversion of non-degradable PET waste to value-added MOF materials, and further suggests promising perspectives to develop the sustainable "Waste-to-MOFs" model in (c) 2024 Institute of Process Engineering, Chinese Academy of sciences. Bimetallic Ni-Fe catalysts derived from layered double hydroxides for CO methanation from syngas

Carbon deposition and sintering of active components such as nano particles are great challenges for Ni-based catalysts for CO methanation to generate synthetic natural gas from syngas. Facing the challenges, bimetallic catalysts with different Fe content derived from layered double hydroxide containing Ni, Fe, Mg, A1 elements were prepared by co-precipitation method. Nanoparticles of Ni-Fe alloy were supported on mixed oxides of aluminium and magnesium after calcination and reduction. The catalysts were characterized by Brunner- Emmett-Teller （BET）, X-ray diffraction, hydrogen tem- perature programmed reduction, inductively coupled plasma, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy and thermogravimetric techniques, and their catalytic activity for CO methanation was investigated. The results show that the Ni-Fe alloy catalysts exhibit better catalytic performance than mono- metallic catalysts except for the Ni4Fe-red catalyst. The Ni2Fe-red catalyst shows the highest CO conversion （100% at 260-350 ~C）, as well as the highest CH4 selectivity （over 95% at 280-350 ~C）, owing to the formation of Ni-Fe alloy. In stability test, the Ni2Fe-red catalyst exhibits great improvement in both anti-sintering and resistance to carbon formation compared with the Ni0Fe-red catalyst. The strong interaction between Ni and Fe element in alloy and surface distribution of Fe element not only inhibits the sintering ofnanoparticles but restrains the formation of Ni clusters.

Metal-organic framework loaded manganese oxides as efficient catalysts for low-temperature selective catalytic reduction of NO with NH3

A mild in-situ deposition method was used to fabricate Mn-based catalysts on a UiO-66 carder for the selective catalytic reduction of NO by NH3 （NH3-SCR）. The catalyst with 8.5 wt-% MnOx loading had the highest catalytic activity for NH3-SCR with a wide temperature window （100-290 C） for 90% NO conversion. Char- acterization of the prepared MnOx/UiO-66 catalysts showed that the catalysts had the crystal structure and porosity of the UiO-66 carrier and that the manganese particles were well-distributed on the surface of the catalyst. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis showed that there are strong interactions between the MnOx and the Zr oxide secondary building units of the UiO-66 which has a positive effect on the catalytic activity. The 8.5 wt-% MnOx catalyst maintained excellent activity during a 24-h stability test and exhibited good resistance to SO2 poisoning.

The application of gene delivery materials has been mainly focused on mammalian cells while rarely extended to plant engineering. Cationic polymers and lipids have been widely utilized to efficiently deliver DNA and siRNA into mammalian cells. However, their applica- tion in plant cells is limited due to the different membrane structures and the presence of plant cell walls. In this study, we developed the cationic, a-helical polypeptide that can effectively deliver DNA into both isolated Arabidopsis thaliana protoplasts and intact leaves. The PPABLG was able to condense DNA to form nanocomplexes, and they exhibited significantly improved transfection efficiencies compared with commercial transfection reagent Lipofec- tamine 2000 and classical cell penetrating peptides such as poly（L-lysine）, HIV-TAT, arginine9, and poly（L-arginine）. This study therefore widens the utilities of helical polypeptide as a unique category of gene delivery materials, and may find their promising applications toward plant gene delivery.

Understanding microwave dielectric properties of (1-x)CaTiO3-xLaAlO3 ceramics in terms of A/B-site ionic-parameters

We prepared (1-x)CaTiO3-xLaAlO3 (0 ≤x≤ 1) microwave dielectric ceramics using a conventional two-step solid-state reaction method,and investigated microwave dielectric properties of the ceramics in terms of A/B-site ***-parameters such as ionic polarizability,A-site bond valence,and ionic rattling were linked to the microwave dielectric *** the LaAlO3 content x in the (1-x)CaTiO3-xLaAlO3 ceramics increased from 0.3 to 0.7,the dielectric constant gradually decreased,which was attributed to the decrease of polarizability deviation and suppression of the cation *** temperature coefficient of the resonant frequency decreased as the content of LaAlO3 increased because of the increase of A-site cation bond *** quality factor value (Q × f) increased as LaAlO3 content increased because of the enhancement of the order degree of B-site cation.A significant deterioration of the temperature coefficient of the resonant frequency and Q ×fvalue was observed at the composition x =*** decreases were attributed to a phase transition from orthorhombic crystal (for x ≤ 0.5) to rhombohedral crystal (for x ＞ 0.5).

Preparation and characteristics of TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofibrils from bamboo pulp and their oxygen-barrier application in PLA films

Bleached bamboo kraft pulp was pretreated by 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-l-oxy radical （TEMPO）- mediated oxidation using a TEMPO/NaBr/NaC10 system at pH = 10 in water to facilitate mechanical disintegration into TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofibrils （TO-CNs）. A series of TO-CNs with different carboxylate contents were obtained by varying amounts of added NaC10. An increase in carboxylate contents results in aqueous TO-CN dispersions with higher yield, zeta potential values, and optical transparency. When carboxylate groups are introduced, the DPv value of the TO-CNs remarkably decreases and then levels off. And the presence of hemicellulose in the pulp is favorable to TEMPO oxidization. After the oxidization, the native cellulose I crystalline structure and crystal size of bamboo pulp are almost maintained. TEM micrographs revealed that the degree of nanofibrillation is directly proportional to the carboxylate contents. With increasing carboxylate con- tents, the free-standing TO-CN films becomes more transparent and mechanically stronger. The oxygen permeability of PLA films drastically decreases from 355 for neat PLA to 8.4 mL-1 m a. d-1 after coating a thin layer of TO-CN with a carboxylate content of 1.8 mmol.g1. Therefore, inexpensive and abundant bamboo pulp would be a promising starting material to isolate cellulose nanfibrils for oxygen-barrier applications.

Dear Editor,In neady all diploid eukaryotes, meiosis is the key phase in sexual reproduction. The typical process is completed by a round of DNA replication followed by two consecutive rounds of chromosome cell division （Ma et al., 2014; Page and Hawley, 2004）. Homologous chromosome pairing and seg- regation occur in the first round of meiosis and is unique to mitosis. The second round of meiosis bears a similarity to the separation of sister chromatids.

Dear Editor Gout is usually characterized by recurrent flares of acute inflammatory arthritis and the crystallization of urate in tissues and joints （Dong et al., 2017）. The formation of monosodium urate crystals （MSU） is due to the elevated uric acid levels in the blood （Yang et al., 2016）. But only 10% of individuals with hyperuricemia develop gout, suggesting that certain people are at a higher risk of developing MSU crystals （Mer- riman and Dalbeth, 2011） or initiating of the acute inflamma- tory response than others.
