Antibiotic Resistance Profile of Enterococcus faecalis and Enterococcus faecium Isolates from Urine and Pleural Fluid in Two Hospitals of Cameroon

Enterococcus faecalis and Enterococcus faecium rank among the leading causes of nosocomial bacteremia and urinary tract infections. They often persist on hospital surfaces due to their ability to withstand adverse environmental conditions (low or high temperatures, high pH, and high salinity). The global Enterococcus faecalis-Enterococcus faecium ratio is currently shifting towards Enterococcus faecium. Enterococci present variable levels of resistance to certain families of antibiotics. This is the case for aminoglycosides, beta-lactams and cephalosporins. In 2017, WHO ranked Enterococci among priority pathogens for research and development of new antibiotics. The objective of our study was to determine the antibiotic resistance profile of Enterococcus faecalis and Enterococcus faecium isolates from urine and pleural fluid in two hospitals in Cameroon. This cross-sectional and analytic study was carried out between June to August 2023 on hospitalized and day patients in which a cytobacteriological test of urine and pleural fluid was done. The samples were inoculated on CLED Agar for urine and on Chocolate + polyvitex and blood agar (prepared from Columbia agar) for pleural fluid samples and incubated at 37℃ for 18 to 24 hours. Identification of isolates was carried out using the API 20 STREP micro gallery (Biomerieux, France) and tested for antimicrobial susceptibility. The data on socio-demographical and potential risk factors were recorded using self-administered questionnaires and data from laboratory analyses of the specimen were collected in a data capture sheet. Potential risk factors associated with the presence of Enterococci, were evaluated using the logistic regression in univariate and multivariate analysis. P value < 0.05 was considered as significant. A total of 511 patients were recruited who were predominantly females. Enterococcus spp were isolated in 27.79% of our samples with Enterococcus faecalis mostly encountered. Coronary Angioplasty in a Low Income Sub-Saharan Country: Situational Analysis

Introduction: Coronary angioplasty is not widely conducted in sub-Saharan Africa in general and Senegal in particular. The objective of this work was to describe the indications, techniques, results and difficulties of coronary angioplasty in Senegal. Patients and Methods: We prospectively included all patients who underwent coronary angioplasty between July 2012 and November 2014. We evaluated the clinical characteristics, techniques used, and the peri-procedural complications. Results: 110 coronary angioplasties were performed at the cardiac catheterisation unit of the clinique du golf in Dakar. The average age of patients was 60.41 ± 10.93 years. A male predominance was noted with a sex ratio of 6.3. Hypertension was found in 57% of patients. The principal indications for coronary angioplasty were for the management of acute coronary syndromes with or without ST elevation, in 29 and 39 patients respectively. The femoral artery was the puncture site in 104 patients. The lesions treated were type A/B1 or B2/C in 53 and 57 cases respectively. The success rates of coronary angioplasties and 30-day mortality were 91% and 0.9% respectively. Conclusion: In sub-Saharan Africa, Senegal in particular, the practice of coronary angioplasty is low. Indeed, many factors linked to socioeconomic status limit the development of coronary angioplasty in Senegal.

When focussing on systems engineering research, we should distinguish between subjects that are of systems engineering essence and others that more closely correspond to those that are more relevant for related disciplines.

Gestures, besides speech, represent the mostly used means of expression by humans. For that regards the product design field, designers have multiple ways for communicating their ideas and concepts. One of them concerns the model making activity, where designers make explicit their concepts by using some appropriate tools and specific hand movements on plastic material with the intent of obtaining a shape. Some studies have demonstrated that visual, tactile and kinesthetic feedbacks are equally important in the shape creation and evaluation process. Moreover current computer aided tools aimed at supporting the conceptual phase of product design are not intuitive to use, and do not exploit designers’ skill and creativity. This paper presents the results of a research work aiming at integrating user-friendly and effective ways of interaction based on ad-hoc haptic interfaces into free-form shape modeling systems. The European project "Touch and Design" （T’nD） proposes the implementation of an innovative virtual clay modeling system based on novel haptic interaction modality oriented to industrial designers. In order to develop an intuitive and easy-to-use system, a study of designers’ hand modeling activities has been carried out by the project industrial partners supported by cognitive psychologists. The users’ manual operators and tools have been translated into corresponding haptic tools and multimodal interaction modalities in the virtual free-form shape modeling system. The paper presents the project research activities, the results achieved so far and the future related work.

Growth of Kentucky Bluegrass as Influenced by Nitrogen and Trinexapacethyl

The experiment aimed to evaluate the effects of N and trinexapac-ethyl （TE） to the growth of Kentucky bluegrass. By using the method of randomized blocks design, 4 N levels, 0 （N1）, 20 （N2）, 25 （N3）, and 30 （N4） kg N ha t mon% with TE at 0 （T1）, 312.5 （T2） and 625 （T3） mL ha-1 every 10 d effect on the total height, clippings and chlorophyll concentration of Kentucky bluegrass were evaluated. Results showed that total height and total clippings of Kentucky bluegrass were reduced by treating with TE and increased by treating with N. Kentucky bluegrass treated with 312.5 and 625 mL ha ＇ per 10 d had total clippings and total height reduced 30 and 45% under different N application level. The N × TE interaction was significant for the chlorophyll concentration of Kentucky bluegrass. The chlorophyll concentration of Kentucky bluegrass treated with TE at 625 mL ha-1 every 10 d was significantly higher than that of Kentucky bluegrass treated with 312.5 mL ha-1 every 10 d at the same N level. The chlorophyll concentration of turfgrass treated with TE at 625 mL ha-1 every 10 d receiving 30 kg N ha -1 month-1 was the highest. Based on the index of turf growth and the chlorophyll concentration, turfgrass receiving 20 or 30 kg N ha-1 month-1 with 625 mL TE ha i every 10 d could balance the problem of mowing frequency and growth quickly while keeping a good quality.

Leaves Aqueous Extract of <i>Boerhavia coccinea</i>Induces Antinociceptive Effect but Increases Nitric Oxide Production in Macrophages

Pain treatment is one of the most challenging situations of the modern medicine. To overcome the actual limitations, new strategies should be developed and phytotherapy represents a promising alternative. Boerhavia coccinea is a medicinal plant used for the treatment of pain. The present work was undertaken to evaluate the antinociceptive effects of crude aqueous extract of the leaves of Boerhavia coccinea (AE) on acute pain and examine its mechanism of action. The analgesic effect of AE was evaluated at doses 50, 100, 200 and 400 mg/kg using the formalin-induced nociception in mice. The specific analgesic effect of AE was verified by testing its effect of AE on the sleep induced by diazepam. The anti-inflammatory effects of AE were also tested in vivo (100 and 200 mg/kg) on CFA-induced inflammation and in vitro (1 to 300 μg/ml) on the production of NO by non-activated or activated (LPS, 1 μg/l) macrophages. The effect of AE in non-stimulated macrophages was evaluated in absence and in presence of L-NAME (100 μg/ml) or dexathetasone (30 μg/ml). AE administered orally significantly (p st phase and 90% at the 2nd phase, but did not show any anti-inflammatory effect. AE at 50 mg/kg increased the latency to sleep and reduced sleep duration. AE drastically (p duction by non-activated or activated macrophages by up to 5654%. L-NAME and dexamethasone potentiated the activation effect of AE on NO production. In conclusion, AE possess potent antinociceptive effect that is not related to any anti-inflammatory activity. Instead, this extract increases the nitric oxide production by an unknown mechanism.
