A Two-folded Impact Analysis of Schema Changes on Database Applications

Database applications are becoming increasingly popular, mainly due to the advanced data management facilities that the underlying database management system offers compared against traditional legacy software applications. The interaction, however, of such applications with the database system introduces a number of issues, among which, this paper addresses the impact analysis of the changes performed at the database schema level. Our motivation is to provide the software engineers of database applications with automated methods that facilitate major maintenance tasks, such as source code corrections and regression testing, which should be triggered by the occurrence of such changes. The presented impact analysis is thus two-folded： the impact is analysed in terms of both the affected source code statements and the affected test suites concerning the testing of these applications. To achieve the former objective, a program slicing technique is employed, which is based on an extended version of the program dependency graph. The latter objective requires the analysis of test suites generated for database applications, which is accomplished by employing testing techniques tailored for this type of applications. Utilising both the slicing and the testing techniques enhances program comprehension of database applications, while also supporting the development of a number of practical metrics regarding their maintainability against schema changes. To evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of the presented techniques and metrics, a software tool, called DATA, has been implemented. The experimental results from its usage on the TPC-C case study are reported and analysed.

Breast cancer is a major cause of mortality among women. Paclitaxel is commonly used forchemotherapy of breast cancer, yet its efficacy is limited by chemoresistance. Generally,drug resistance is associated with acquisition of the epithelialmesenchymal transition(EMT) in cancer. Targeting EMT could be a novel therapeutic strategy for treatment ofbreast cancer. The evidence of microRNAs involvement in cancer drug resistance has beenemerging recently. MicroRNAs are master regulators of gene expression in many biologicaland pathological processes, including mammary gland development and breast *** of these microRNAs have been shown to control cellular plasticity through the suppressionof EMT-inducers or to influence cellular phenotype through the suppression ofgenes involved in defining the epithelial and mesenchymal cell states. To investigate therole of miR-125 b in the development of resistance to paclitaxel as well as accompanyingEMT-like properties, we established a paclitaxel-resistant model by continually exposingMCF-7 and SKBR-3 breast cancer cells to paclitaxel. Using the paclitaxel-resistant MCF-7/PTX and SKBR-3/PTX cell lines, we examined the cellular morphology, molecularchanges, migration and proliferation consistent with the EMT. Down-regulated miR-125 bwas observed in human breast cancer cells resistant to MCF-7/PTX and SKBR-3/PTX ascompared to the parental MCF-7 and SKBR-3 cells. Up-regulation of miR-125 b with transfectionof miR-125 b mimics in MCF-7/PTX and SKBR-3/PTX was sufficient to sensitizeMCF-7/PR and SKBR-3/PR cells to paclitaxel and partly reversed EMT. A combination ofmRNA profiling, bioinformatics analysis and experimental validation identified SEMA4 C asa direct target of miR-125 b. The functional interaction between miR-125 b and the targetgene, SEMA4 C, was examined using the luciferase reporter assay and western ***-125 b negatively regulated SEMA4 C expression by binding to the 3’-untranslated regionof SEMA4 C. Antibacterial and antifungal activity of Terminalia arjuna Wight&*** against multi-drug resistant clinical isolates

Objective:To evaluate antimicrobial activity of Terminalia arjuna(***)bark against clinical strains of multi-drug resistant bacteria,and Candida *** from patients,as well as the corresponding reference ***:The antimicrobial activity of water,methanol and chloroform extracts of *** bark were evaluated by agar-well diffusion method,followed by determination of minimum inhibitory concentration(MIC)by broth micro-dilution *** clinical isolates were studied for antibacterial susceptibility by Kirby and Bauer disk diffusion ***:The water and methanolic extracts of *** bark produced significant zones of inhibition against twenty-two tested bacteria including eight *** values against the bacteria were found in the range of 0.16 to 2.56 mg/*** chloroform extract did not exhibit antibacterial *** polar extracts of *** also demonstrated strong antifungal effect against eight species of Candida,with MIC between 0.16 and 0.64 mg/*** antimicrobial efficacy of the polar extracts was found to be commensurate with high polyphenol content in contrast to the non-polar(chloroform fraction).Conclusions:This study has revealed the therapeutic prospect of *** bark for the treatment of microbial *** polar fraction of the bark could be used for development of novel antimicrobial agents,particularly against urinary tract infections,and candidiasis/candidaemia.

Geometry of Motion for Video Shakiness Detection

This paper presents a novel algorithm for automatically detecting global shakiness in casual videos. Per-frame amplitude is computed by the geometry of motion, based on the kinematic model defined by inter-frame geometric transformations. Inspired by motion perception, we investigate the just-noticeable amplitude of shaky motion perceived by the human visual system. Then, we use the thresholding contrast strategy on the statistics of per-frame amplitudes to determine the occurrence of perceived shakiness. For testing the detection accuracy, a dataset of video clips is constructed with manual shakiness label as the ground truth. The experiments demonstrate that our algorithm can obtain good detection accuracy that is in concordance with subjective judgement on the videos in the dataset.

Study and application of time series forecasting based on rough set and Kernel method

A support vector machine time series forecasting model based on rough set data preprocessing was proposed by combining rough set attribute reduction and support vector machine regression algorithm. First, remove the redundant attribute for forecasting from condition attribute by rough set method; then use the minimum condition attribute set obtained after the reduction and the corresponding initial data, reform a new training sample set which only retain the important attributes influencing the forecasting accuracy; study and train the support vector machine with the training sample obtained after reduction, and then input the reformed testing sample set according to the minimum condition attribute and corresponding initial data. The model was tested and the mapping relation was got between the condition attribute and forecasting variable. Eventually, power supply and demand were forecasted in this model. The average absolute error rates of power consumption of the whole society and yearly maximum load are respectively 14.21% and 13.23%. It shows that RS-SVM time series forecasting model has high forecasting accuracy.

Background and Aims:Chronic hepatitis B virus(HBV)infection is a global public health *** reactivation usually occurs in cancer patients after receiving cytotoxic chemotherapy or immunosuppressive ***(FK228)and vorinostat(SAHA)are histone deacetylase inhibitors(HDACi)approved by the Food and Drug Administration as novel antitumor *** aim of this study was to explore the effects and mechanisms of HDACi treatment on HBV ***:To assess these effects,human hepatoma cell lines were cultured and cell viability after FK228 or SAHA treatment was measured by the CCK-8 cell counting kit-8 ***,HBV DNA and RNA were quantified by real-time PCR and Southern ***,analysis by western blotting,enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay(ELISA),immunohistochemistry,and flow cytometry was ***:FK228/SAHA treatment significantly promoted HBV replication and biosynthesis in both HBV-replicating cells and HBV-transgenic mouse *** cytometry assay indicated that FK228/SAHA enhanced HBV replication by inducing cell cycle arrest through modulating the expression of cell cycle regulatory *** addition,simultaneous inhibition of HDAC1/2 by FK228 promoted HBV replication more effectively than the broad spectrum HDAC inhibitor ***:Overall,our results demonstrate that cell cycle blockage plays an important role in FK228/SAHAenhanced HBV replication,thus providing a potential avenue for rational use of HDACi in patients with chronic hepatitis B.

In the current socio-economic scenario characterized by a growing shortage of resources and progressive budget constraints, the need to better coordinate processes in health institutions appears as a relevant aspect to ensure the future sustainability of system. In this sense, Relational Coordination(RC) provides a valuable opportunity for the reconfiguration of clinical guidelines concerning isolated single-level considerations. In this research the RC model has been applied to explain best results in the process of diagnosing and offering clinical treatments for lung cancer. Lung cancer presents the higher rates of tumor's mortality worldwide. Through unstructured and informal interviews with clinicians at both levels(Primary/Specialist Care), a diagnosis of the situation in relation to joint management of lung cancer is provided. Solutions of continuity in terms of coordination are explained due to the observation of lack of effective knowledge transfer between the two levels. It is this disconnection which justifies the introduction of a modified model of RC for the study and implementation of transfer relations between the knowledge holders, in order to structure consolidated and cooperative evidence-based models that lead to a substantial shortening in the response times with a marked outcomes improvement. To our knowledge, the application of this model to a Public Health problem bringing together both levels of care, hasn't been made till now.

Dried blood spots,valid screening for viral hepatitis and human immunodeficiency virus in real-life

AIM To detect chronic hepatitis B(CHB),chronic hepatitis C(CHC) and human immunodeficiency virus(HIV) infections in dried blood spot(DBS) and compare these samples to venous blood sampling in *** We included prospective patients with known viral infections from drug treatment centers,a prison and outpatient clinics and included blood donors as negative controls. Five drops of finger capillary blood were spotted on filter paper,and a venous blood sample was obtained. The samples were analyzed for HBs Ag,antiHBc,anti-HBs,anti-HCV,and anti-HIV levels as well as subjected to a combined nucleic acid test(NAT) for HBV DNA,HCV RNA and HIV *** Samples from 404 subjects were screened(85 CHB,116 CHC,114 HIV and 99 blood donors). DBS had a sensitivity of > 96% and a specificity of > 98% for the detection of all three infections. NAT testing did not improve sensitivity,but correctly classified 95% of the anti-HCV-positive patients with chronic and past infections. Anti-HBc and anti-HBS showed low sensitivity in DBS(68% and 42%).CONCLUSION DBS sampling,combined with an automated analysis system,is a feasible screening method to diagnose chronic viral hepatitis and HIV infections outside of the health care system.
