This paper investigates the impact of cold and snow on daily and hourly truck traffic volume on a primary highway in Alberta, Canada. This research is based on a detailed case study of 5 years of weigh-in-motion data recorded continuously at Leduc site on Highway 2A. Influence of the winter conditions on truck type distribution is examined by classifying trucks into single-unit trucks, single-trailer, and multi-trailer units. It is evident from the study that proportion of the three truck classes in the total truck traffic remained essentially stable over the study period （2005-2009）. Dummy-variable regression models are used to relate daily and hourly truck traffic volume with snowfall and categorized cold as independent variables. The statistical significance of all the independent variables used in the model is established by conducting tests such as R2, F test, incremental F test, and t test. The study results suggested that the truck volume is not significantly affected by the normal snowfall or the typical cold temperatures, i.e., average daily snowfall about less than 15 cm or temperatures higher than -25 ℃ are not likely to affect the truck traffic patterns. It is believed that the findings of this study can benefit highway agencies in developing programs and policies for efficient monitoring of truck traffic throughout the year and snow removal during the winter season in Canada.

The main objective of this study was to determine the desiccation behavior of clay slurries. A clay slurry with high water adsorption capacity(W_L = 180%,W_P 60%,W_s = 20) was used to determine the soil water characteristic curve(SWCC), shrinkage curve, and hydraulic conductivity. The last parameter was determined similar to the Instantaneous Profile Method using evaporation tests. Results indicated that the clay slurry had an air entry value(AEV) of 1000 kPa and a residual suction of 5000 kPa that occurred at the plastic limit and the shrinkage limit, respectively. The discrepancy between theoretical and measured shrinkage limit was due to the gradual increase in clay particle contact. Unlike soils, the saturated hydraulic conductivity varied by two orders of magnitude(4×10 ~10 m/s at 20 kPa to 3 x 10 ~12 m/s at AEV). The unsaturated k further decreased to 10 ~14 m/s at 6 x 10~4 kPa beyond which vapor flow took place.

It has been reported in the past literature that total traffic volume and passenger car volume are affected by snowfall and cold temperature, but trucks are not sig- nificantly affected. This paper aims to confirm that the distribution of truck types is not affected by winter weather conditions through combined statistical analysis in the framework of microscopic and macroscopic impact anal- ysis. A micro-level analysis was conducted to investigate the effect of snowfall and temperature on changes in truck type distribution. A macro-level analysis was also con- ducted to investigate the effect of the months （or seasons） on changes in truck type distribution. Truck traffic data were collected for 5 years at the weigh-in-motion site in Highway 2A, which is used for regional commuters near the city of Leduc, Alberta, Canada. The trucks were sub- divided into straight unit truck, single trailer and multi trailer unit and then analyzed by applying a nonparametric Chi-squared test combined with the binomial probability test. As a result of the nonparametric test, the truck type distribution was stable irrespective of the severity of winter weather conditions, which are microscopic factors such as snowfall and temperature, and was not influenced by changes in months and seasons, which are macroscopic factors.

Previous cryogenic Raman spectroscopic analysis of H_2O-NaCl-CaCl_2 solutions has identified the Raman peaks of various hydrates of NaCl and CaCl_2,and established a linear relationship between Raman band intensity of the hydrates and the composition of the solution（NaCl/（NaCl＋CaCl_2） molar ratio,or X_（NaC1）） using synthetic fluids,which created the opportunity to quantitatively determine the solute composition of aqueous fluid inclusions with cryogenic Raman *** paper aims to test the feasibility of this newly established method with natural fluid ***-five fluid inclusions in quartz from various occurrences which show a high degree of freezing during the cooling processes were carefully chosen for cryogenic Raman analysis.X_（Na）Cl was calculated using their spectra and an equation established in a previous *** inclusions were then analyzed with the thermal decrepitation-SEM-EDS *** X_（NaCl） values estimated from the two methods show a 1：1 correlation,indicating that the new,non-destructive cryogenic Raman spectroscopic analysis method can indeed be used for fluid inclusion compositional study.

A framework is proposed to understand coupled consolidation-desiccation in clay slurries using effective stress and soil suction as state variables. Constitutive surfaces were derived from best-fit equations for reference curves where one state variable was kept at 1 kPa and the other was varied up to 10~6 *** indicated that volume compressibility comprises of apparent pre-consolidation up to 100 kPa beyond which a single best-fit curve is valid. Similarly, the theoretical virgin compression line(specific gravity dependant), indicated that both state variables have the same effect up to the air entry value(1000 kPa at a void ratio of 1.8) beyond which void ratio reduces more readily under effective stress than under soil suction. Likewise, hydraulic conductivity remained saturated up to the air entry value and varied from 10^(-9)m/s to 10^(-12)m/s. Finally, the unsaturated hydraulic conductivity correlated well with empirical relationship up to 10^(-14) m/s bevond which vapor flow became dominant.

The option of organizing E-auctions to purchase electricity required for anticipated peak load period is a new one for utility *** meet the extra demand load,we develop electricity combinatorial reverse auction(CRA)for the purpose of procuring power from diverse energy *** this new,smart electricity market,suppliers of different scales can participate,and homeowners may even take an active *** our CRA,an item,which is subject to several trading constraints,denotes a time slot that has two conflicting attributes,electricity quantity and *** secure electricity,we design our auction with two bidding rounds:round one is exclusively for variable energy,and round two allows storage and nonintermittent renewable energy to bid on the remaining *** electricity auction leads to a complex winner determination(WD)task that we represent as a resource procurement optimization *** solve this problem using multi-objective genetic algorithms in order to find the trade-off solution that best lowers the price and increases the *** solution consists of multiple winning suppliers,their prices,quantities and *** validate our WD approach based on large-scale simulated *** first assess the time-efficiency of our WD method,and we then compare it to well-known heuristic and exact WD *** order to gain an exact idea about the accuracy of WD,we implement two famous exact algorithms for our constrained combinatorial procurement problem.

The large number of environmental problems faced by society in recent years has driven researchers to collect and study massive amounts of data in order to understand the complex relations that exist between people and the environment in which we *** datasets are often high dimensional and heterogeneous in nature,with complex geospatial *** such data can be challenging,especially when there is a need to maintain spatial awareness as the non-spatial attributes are ***-Coordinated Parallel Coordinates(GCPC)is a geovisual analytics approach designed to support exploration and analysis within complex geospatial environmental *** coordinates are tightly coupled with a geospatial representation and an investigative scatterplot,all of which can be used to show,reorganize,filter,and highlight the high dimensional,heterogeneous,and geospatial aspects of the *** sets of field trials were conducted with expert data analysts to validate the real-world benefits of the approach for studying environmental *** results of these evaluations were positive,providing real-world evidence and new insights regarding the value of using GCPC to explore among environmental datasets when there is a need to remain aware of the geospatial aspects of the data as the non-spatial elements are studied.

The main objective of this study was to determine the consolidation behaviour of clay slurries.A finegrained clay with high consistency limits(W_L = 180%,w_P= 120%) was investigated using conventional oedometer and bench-top centrifuge *** indicated that the slurry had an apparent preconsolidation(due to initial conditions,electrochemical interactions,tortuous drainage,and thixotropic strength) from e = 5.7 to e = 5.5 followed by virgin ***,the low hydraulic conductivity(10^(-10)-10^(-12) m/s) was due to low porosity(small pore throats) and high tortuosity(long flow paths).Unlike consolidation of soils,the c_v and m_v decreased with increasing σ' but increased with increasing e and *** data from the two tests correlated well in the range of σ' = 10-65 kPa,e = 5.5-3.86,k= 1.7 × 10^(-10)-5×10^(-11) m/s,F_c = 1-40 *** equations were developed to correlate the consolidation parameters(e,σ',k) with F_*** deviation of k beyond 40 MN(e = 4.65) was due to deviation from the initial straight line portion of the settlement curve in the centrifuge test.

The present research is to experimentally study the joint effects of external pressure and vibratory excitations of low frequency on oil slug mobilization and flow in a capillary *** and after the oil slug mobilization,the flow phenomena and pressure drop variation across the model are *** distance travelled by the oil slug subjected to various external pressure and vibratory excitations are also *** experimental results obtained indicate that the external vibratory excitation acting on the model has positive effect on the flow and mobilization of the oil slug in the *** is found in the research,with the application of the excitation,the contact angle between the oil slug and tube-wall is changed;the maximum pressure required to mobilize the oil slug is reduced accordingly;and the oil slug travel distance is increased in comparing with that without external *** research contributes to the comprehension of improved liquid mobilization in porous media under the application of external *** finding of the research is significant for studying the two-phase liquid flow in porous media subjected to external excitations and provides insights for Enhanced Oil Recovery with waterflooding and vibratory stimulations.
