strong evidence has accumulated to show a correlation between depression symptoms and inflammatory ***,anti-inflammatory treatment has shown partial effectiveness in alleviating depression *** barbarum polysaccharide(LBP),derived from Goji berries,exhibits notable antioxidative and anti-inflammatory *** our recent double-blinded randomized placebo-controlled trial,we found that LBP significantly reduced depressive symptoms in adolescents with subthreshold *** is presumed that the antidepressant effect of LBP may be associated with its influence on inflammatory *** the double-blinded randomized controlled trial,we enrolled 29 adolescents with subthreshold depression and randomly divided them into an LBP group and a placebo *** the LBP group,adolescents were given 300 mg/d LBP.A 6-week follow up was completed by 24 adolescents,comprising 14 adolescents from the LBP group(15.36±2.06 years,3 men and 11 women)and 10 adolescents from the placebo group(14.9±1.6 years,2 men and 8 women).Our results showed that after 6 weeks of treatment,the interleukin-17A level in the LBP group was lower than that in the placebo *** analysis showed that LBP reduced the correlations and connectivity between inflammatory factors,which were associated with the improvement in depressive *** findings suggest that 6-week administration of LBP suppresses the immune response by reducing interleukin-17A level,thereby exerting an antidepressant effect.

Initial joint bleed volume in a delayed on-demand treatment setup correlates with subsequent synovial changes in hemophilic mice

Background: Hemophilic arthropathy is a debilitating morbidity of hemophilia caused by recurrent joint bleeds. We investigated if the joint bleed volume, before initiation of treatment, was linked to the subsequent degree of histopathological changes and the development of bone pathology in a mouse model of hemophilic ***: FVIII knock-out(F8-KO) mice were dosed with a micro-CT blood pool agent prior to induction of hemarthrosis. Eight hours after induction, the bleed volume was quantified with micro computed tomography(micro-CT) and recombinant FVIII treatment initiated. On Day 8, inflammation in the knees was characterized by fluorescence molecular tomography. On Day 14, knee pathology was characterized by micro-CT and histopathology. In a second study, contrast agent was injected into the knee of wild-type(WT) mice, followed by histopathological evaluation on Day ***: The average joint bleed volume before treatment was 3.9 mm3. The inflammation-related fluorescent intensities in the injured knees were significantly increased on Day 8. The injured knees had significantly increased synovitis scores, vessel counts, and areas of hemosiderin compared to un-injured knees. However, no cartilage-or bone pathology was observed. The bleed volume before initiation of treatment correlated with the degree of synovitis and was associated with high fluorescent intensity on Day 8. In F8-KO and WT mice, persistence of contrast agent in the joint elicited morphological ***: When applying a delayed on-demand treatment regimen to hemophilic mice subjected to an induced knee hemarthrosis, the degree of histopathological changes on Day 14 reflected the bleed volume prior to initiation of treatment.

A DIAGNOsTIC sTUDY OF FEEDBACK MECHANIsM IN GREENHOUsE EFFECTs sIMULATED BY NCAR CCM1

This paper describes a diagnostic study of the feedback mechanism in greenhouse effects of increased CO_2 and oth- er trace gases(CH_4,N_2O and CFCs),simulated by general circulation *** study is based on two sensitivity exper- iments for doubled CO_2 and the inclusion of other trace gases,respectively,using version one of the community climate model(CCM1)developed at the National Centre for Atmospheric Research.A one-dimensional(1-D)and a two-dimensional(2-D)radiative-convective models are used to diagnose the feedback *** shows that the feedback factors in global and annual mean conditions are in the sequence of surface albedo,water vapor amount,water vapor distribution,cloud height,critical lapse rate and cloud cover,while in zonal and annual mean conditions in the tropical region the above sequence does not change except the two water vapor terms being the largest feedback compo- *** the feedback components,the total water vapor feedback is the largest(about 50%).The diagnosis also gives a very small feedback of either the cloud cover or the lapse rate,which is substantially different from the 1-D feedback analysis by hansen et al.(1984).The small lapse rate feedback is considered to be partly caused by the convective adjustment scheme adopted by CCM1 model. This paper presents the first report of the successful ball-milling exfoliation of graphitic filaments （GANF~ carbon nanofibres） into single layer graphene. The addition of small amounts of solvent during the milling process makes it possible to enhance the intercalation of the exfoliating agent （melamine） between the graphene layers, thus promoting exceptional exfoliation. Advantage has also been taken of the fact that the hansen solubility parameters of graphene are different from those of carbon fibres, which allows single and few-layer graphene to be suspended in a particular solvent, thus discriminating them from poorly exfoliated carbon nanofibres.

De novel heterozygous copy number deletion on 7q31.31-7q31.32 involving TsPAN12 gene with familial exudative vitreoretinopathy in a Chinese family

Optogenetics-induced activation of glutamate receptors improves memory function in mice with Alzheimer’s disease

Optogenetics is a combination of optics and genetics technology that can be used to activate or inhibit specific cells in tissues. It has been used to treat Parkinson’s disease, epilepsy and neurological diseases, but rarely Alzheimer’s disease. Adeno-associated virus carrying the CaMK promoter driving the optogenetic channelrhodopsin-2 (chr2) gene (or without the chr2 gene, as control) was injected into the bilateral dentate gyri, followed by repeated intrahippocampal injections of soluble low-molecular-weight amyloid-β1–42 peptide (Aβ1–42). subsequently, the region was stimulated with a 473 nm laser (1–3 ms, 10 Hz, 5 minutes). The novel object recognition test was conducted to test memory function in mice. Immunohistochemical staining was performed to analyze the numbers of NeuN and synapsin Ia/b-positive cells in the hippocampus. Western blot assay was carried out to analyze the expression levels of glial fibrillary acidic protein, NeuN, synapsin Ia/b, metabotropic glutamate receptor-1a (mGluR-1a), mGluR-5, N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor subunit NR1, glutamate receptor 2, interleukin-1β, interleukin-6 and interleukin-10. Optogenetic stimulation improved working and short-term memory in mice with Alzheimer’s disease. This neuroprotective effect was associated with increased expression of NR1, glutamate receptor 2 and mGluR-5 in the hippocampus, and decreased expression of glial fibrillary acidic protein and interleukin-6. Our results show that optogenetics can be used to regulate the neuronal-glial network to ameliorate memory functions in mice with Alzheimer’s disease. The study was approved by the Animal Resources Committee of Jinan University, China (approval No. LL-KT-2011134) on February 28, 2011.
