Evaluation and Projection of Extreme High Temperature Indices in Southwestern China Using NEX-GDDP-CMIP6

Based on the recently released NASA Earth Exchange Global Daily Downscaled Projections(NEX-GDDP)Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6(CMIP6) dataset and the gridded observational daily dataset CN05.1, this study evaluates the performance of 26 CMIP6 models in simulating extreme high temperature(EHT) indices in southwestern China and estimates future changes in the EHT indices under the Shared Socioeconomic Pathways(SSPs) SSP1-2.6, SSP2-4.5, and SSP5-8.5 using 11 optimal CMIP6 models. Five EHT indices are employed:annual maximum value of daily maximum temperature(TXX), high temperature days(T35), warm days(TX90P),heat wave frequency(HWF), and heat wave days(HWD). The main results are as follows.(1) NEX-GDDP-CMIP6 is highly capable of simulating the spatial patterns of TXX and T35 in southwestern China but it presents a weaker ability to simulate the spatial patterns of TX90P, HWF, and HWD.(2) The simulated time series of T35, TX90P, HWF,and HWD in southwestern China exhibit consistent upward trends with the observations. The linear trends of increase in TX90P and HWD are much greater than those of increase in TXX, T35, and HWF.(3) The estimated increases in TXX and T35 in southwestern China are significantly greater in chongqing and the adjacent areas of Sichuan than in the other regions. Spatial distributions of the increases in TX90P, HWF, and HWD generally show higher values in the west and lower values in the east.(4) In the three different scenarios, the projected future TXX,T35, TX90P, and HWD in southwestern China all display a continuous increase with time and radiative forcing levels, whereas HWF initially increases but then decreases under the SSP5-8.5 scenario. By the end of the 21st century, under the SSP5-8.5 scenario, TXX and T35 are projected to increase by 6.0℃ and 45.0 days, respectively. The duration of individual heat waves is also expected to increase.

Synthesis-temperature-dependent phase composition manipulation toward high thermoelectric performance in tetrahedrites

Tetrahedrite,an Earth-abundant natural mineral,has attracted extensive research interest because of its excellent thermoelectric performance.Herein,tetrahedrite samples comprising Cu-poor Cu_(12)Sb_(4)S_(13)and Cu-rich Cu_(14)Sb_(4)S_(13)phases have been synthesized using a colloidal method,in which the ratio of two phases is manipulated by controlling the synthesis temperature to improve the thermoelectric perfor-mance.It is found that an ultralow total thermal conductivity of∼0.3 W m^(−1)K^(−1)at 723 K is realized in the sample with a Cu-rich phase fraction of∼50%,which can be attributed to maximized phonon scattering by phase boundaries.As a result,combined with a decent power factor,this sample obtains an optimal zT of 1.15,which is about 85%higher than that of the sample with a Cu-rich phase fraction of∼64%and comparable to zT values of other eco-friendly,abundant Cu-based thermoelectric materials.This work demonstrates an effective synthesis-temperature-dependent phase composition manipulation strategy toward enhanced thermoelectric performance in tetrahedrites.

BACKGROUND Multilocular thymic cyst(MTC)is a rare mediastinal lesion which is considered to occur in the process of acquired inflammation.It is usually characterized by well-defined cystic density and is filled with transparent liquid.CASE SUMMARY We report on a 39-year-old male with a cystic-solid mass in the anterior mediastinum.Computer tomography(CT)imaging showed that the mass was irregular with unclear boundaries.After injection of contrast agent,there was a slight enhancement of stripes and nodules.According to CT findings,it was diagnosed as thymic cancer.CONCLUSION After surgery,MTC accompanied by bleeding and infection was confirmed by pathological examination.The main lesson of this case was that malignant thymic tumor and MTC of the anterior mediastinum sometimes exhibit similar CT findings.Caution is necessary in clinical work to avoid misdiagnosis.

Design and mechanical properties analysis of a cellular Waterbomb origamistructure

Cellular structures are commonly used to design energy-absorbing structures,and origami structures are becominga prevalent method of cellular structure design.This paper proposes a foldable cellular structure based on theWaterbomb origami pattern.The geometrical configuration of this structure is described.Quasi-static compressiontests of the origami tube cell of this cellular structure are conducted,and load-displacement relationship curvesare obtained.Numerical simulations are carried out to analyze the effects of aspect ratio,folding angle,thicknessand number of layers of origami tubes on initial peak force and specific energy absorption(SEA).Calculationformulas for initial peak force and SEA are obtained by the multiple linear regression method.The degree ofinfluence of each parameter on the mechanical properties of the single-layer tube cell is compared.The resultsshow that the cellular structure exhibits negative stiffness and periodic load-bearing capacity,as well as foldingangle has the most significant effect on the load-bearing and energy-absorbing capacity.By adjusting the designparameters,the stiffness,load-bearing capacity and energy absorption capacity of this cellular structure can beadjusted,which shows the programmable mechanical properties of this cellular structure.The foldability andthe smooth periodic load-bearing capacity give the structure potential for application as an energy-absorbingstructure.

With the increasing attention received by lightweight metals,numerous essential fields have increased requirements for mag-nesium(Mg)alloys with good room-temperature and high-temperature mechanical properties.However,the high-temperature mechanic-al properties of commonly used commercial Mg alloys,such as AZ91D,deteriorate considerably with increasing temperatures.Over the past several decades,extensive efforts have been devoted to developing heat-resistant Mg alloys.These approaches either inhibit the gen-eration of thermally unstable phases or promote the formation of thermally stable precipitates/phases in matrices through solid solution or precipitation strengthening.In this review,numerous studies are systematically introduced and discussed.Different alloy systems,includ-ing those based on Mg–Al,Mg–Zn,and Mg–rare earth,are carefully classified and compared to reveal their mechanical properties and strengthening mechanisms.The emphasis,limitations,and future prospects of these heat-resistant Mg alloys are also pointed out and dis-cussed to develop heat-resistant Mg alloys and broaden their potential application areas in the future.

A Robust N-Terminal Pro-Brain Natriuretic Peptide Assay for Clinical Diagnosis of Heart Failure in Elderly Patients

Heart failure(HF)is a clinical hallmark of cardiovascular syndrome leading to substantial morbidity,repeated hospitalization,and enormous healthcare expenditure.As elderly populations continue to increase,biomarker-guided diagnosis and treatment for age-related cardiac decline have become essential.Accumulating evidence demonstrates that N-terminal proBNP(NT-proBNP)can provide a unique window into the diagnosis and risk stratification with HF.Herein,a simple yet robust aptasensor is developed for on-site recognizing the NT-proBNP by its targeting aptamer,thus achieving the accurate diagnosis of HF.This aptasensing system is prepared by absorbing the fluorophore-labeled aptamer strand onto the graphene oxide(GO),leading to efficient quenching without possible off-site signal leakage.The aptamer strand can specifically identify target NT-proBNP molecules via a versatile conformational transformation,resulting in the desorption of the aptamer-NTproBNP complexes from GO and re-generation fluorescence signal,thus allowing sensitive detection of NT-proBNP in 37 clinical blood samples.Taking advantage of the high specificity of aptamer-guaranteed recognitions of NT-proBNP,this aptasensor system readily achieves better diagnostic performance for HF than commercially adopted chemiluminescence immunoassay(Siemens,CLIA)in hospitals in terms of accuracy(89.2%vs 83.8%),specificity(89.5%vs 84.2%),and positive predictive value(88.9%vs 83.3%).This work provides a stable option for the diagnosis and treatment of elderly HF-related diseases inclinics.

Vitamin A deficiency suppresses CEACAM1 to impair colonic epithelial barrier function via downregulating microbial-derived short-chain fatty acids

Vitamin A (VA) plays an essential role in modulating both the gut microbiota and gut barrier function.Short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs),as metabolites of the gut microbiota,protect the physiological intestinal barrier;however,they are compromised when VA is deficient.Thus,there is an urgent need to understand how and which SCFAs modulate colonic epithelial barrier integrity in VA deficiency (VAD).Herein,compared with normal VA rats (VAN),at the beginning of pregnancy,we confirmed that the colonic desmosome junction was impaired in the VAD group,and the amounts of acetate,propionate,and butyrate declined because of the decreased abundance of SCFA-producing bacteria (Romboutsia ,Collinsella ,and Allobaculum ).The differentially expressed genes correlated with the gut barrier and the histone deacetylase complex between the VAD and VAN groups were enriched by RNA sequencing.In the VAD group,the expression levels of colonic CEA cell adhesion molecule 1 (CEACAM1) were down-regulated,and the levels of histone deacetylase 1 (HDAC1) and HDAC3 were up-regulated.Intriguingly,the above changes in the VAD groups were rescued by VA supplementation in the early postnatal period.Further study indicated that in Caco-2 cells,butyrate treatment significantly repressed the enrichment of HDAC3 on the promoter of the CEACAM1 gene to induce its expression.Our findings support that butyrate intervention can alleviate the impairment of colonic barrier function caused by VAD,and timely postnatal VA intervention may reverse the damage caused by VAD on gut barrier integrity during pregnancy.

Health risk assessment of trace metal(loid)s in agricultural soils based on Monte Carlo simulation coupled with positive matrix factorization model in chongqing, southwest China

This study aimed to investigate the pollution characteristics, source apportionment, and health risks associated with trace metal(loid)s(TMs) in the major agricultural producing areas in chongqing, China. We analyzed the source apportionment and assessed the health risk of TMs in agricultural soils by using positive matrix factorization(PMF) model and health risk assessment(HRA) model based on Monte Carlo simulation. Meanwhile, we combined PMF and HRA models to explore the health risks of TMs in agricultural soils by different pollution sources to determine the priority control factors. Results showed that the average contents of cadmium(Cd), arsenic (As), lead(Pb), chromium(Cr), copper(Cu), nickel(Ni), and zinc(Zn) in the soil were found to be 0.26, 5.93, 27.14, 61.32, 23.81, 32.45, and 78.65 mg/kg, respectively. Spatial analysis and source apportionment analysis revealed that urban and industrial sources, agricultural sources, and natural sources accounted for 33.0%, 27.7%, and 39.3% of TM accumulation in the soil, respectively. In the HRA model based on Monte Carlo simulation, noncarcinogenic risks were deemed negligible(hazard index <1), the carcinogenic risks were at acceptable level(10^(-6)

Is recovery enhancement after gastric cancer surgery really a safe approach for elderly patients?

BACKGROUND This study aimed to evaluate the safety of enhanced recovery after surgery(ERAS)in elderly patients with gastric cancer(GC).AIM To evaluate the safety of ERAS in elderly patients with GC.METHODS The PubMed,EMBASE,and Cochrane Library databases were used to search for eligible studies from inception to April 1,2023.The mean difference(MD),odds ratio(OR)and 95%confidence interval(95%CI)were pooled for analysis.The quality of the included studies was evaluated using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale scores.We used Stata(V.16.0)software for data analysis.RESULTS This study consists of six studies involving 878 elderly patients.By analyzing the clinical outcomes,we found that the ERAS group had shorter postoperative hospital stays(MD=-0.51,I2=0.00%,95%CI=-0.72 to-0.30,P=0.00);earlier times to first flatus(defecation;MD=-0.30,I²=0.00%,95%CI=-0.55 to-0.06,P=0.02);less intestinal obstruction(OR=3.24,I2=0.00%,95%CI=1.07 to 9.78,P=0.04);less nausea and vomiting(OR=4.07,I2=0.00%,95%CI=1.29 to 12.84,P=0.02);and less gastric retention(OR=5.69,I2=2.46%,95%CI=2.00 to 16.20,P=0.00).Our results showed that the conventional group had a greater mortality rate than the ERAS group(OR=0.24,I2=0.00%,95%CI=0.07 to 0.84,P=0.03).However,there was no statistically significant difference in major complications between the ERAS group and the conventional group(OR=0.67,I2=0.00%,95%CI=0.38 to 1.18,P=0.16).CONCLUSION Compared to those with conventional recovery,elderly GC patients who received the ERAS protocol after surgery had a lower risk of mortality.

Achieving exceptionally high strength and rapid degradation rate of Mg-Er-Ni alloy by strengthening with lamellar γ' and bulk LPSO phases

As-extruded Mg-Er-Ni alloys with different volume fractions of long-period stacking ordered(LPSO)phase and density of lamellar γ' phase were prepared,and the microstructure,mechanical,and degradation properties were investigated.Coupling the bulk LPSO phase and the lamellar γ' phase,and controlling the dynamic recrystallization processes during deformation by adjusting the volume fraction of LPSO and the density of the γ' phase,a synergistic increase in strength and degradation rate can be achieved.On the one hand,the increase in corrosion rate was related to the increased volume fraction of the bulk LPSO phase and the densities of the lamellar γ' phase,which provide more galvanic corrosion.Moreover,high densities of the lamellar γ' phase can provide more corrosion interface by inhibiting the recrystallization process to refine dynamic recrystallized(DRXed)grains during the hot extrusion.On the other hand,the ultimate tensile strength(UTS)and tensile yield strength(TYS)of the Mg-Er-Ni alloy increased from 345 and 265 MPa to 514 MPa and 358 MPa,respectively,which was mainly attributed to grain boundary and texture strengthening,bulk LPSO phase and lamellar γ' phase strengthening.Overall,Mg^(-1)4Er-4Ni alloy,which contains the highest volume fraction bulk LPSO phase and the densities of lamellar γ' phase,re-alized a synergistic enhancement of strength and degradation rate.The UTS,TYS,and degradation rate of Mg^(-1)4Er-4Ni were 514 MPa,358 MPa,and 142.5 mg cm^(-2)h^(-1)(3 wt%KCl solution at 93◦C),respectively.This research provides new insight into developing Mg alloys with high strength and degradation rates for fracturing tool materials in the application of oil and gas exploitation in harsh environments.
