As basic facts of life,illness and healing occur frequently and in a variety of patterns in chinese non-medical literature,starting from the earliest sources inscribed on oracle bones and continuing throughout literary history up to the present *** article looks at illness narratives in early medieval anecdotal literature(3rd to 6th century CE)to understand how the experience of being sick or of attending to the sick was reflected in these socio-literary environments and what rhetorical and ideological roles these narratives played in their larger narrative *** focusing on the experiences of the sick and those around them,this article aims at“Honoring the Stories of Illness,”in Rita Charon’s words,that are hiding in plain sight in much of chinese non-medical literature.

Nie Gannu 聂绀弩（1903-86）, essayist and poet, had begun his literary career as an avid advocate of the New Culture and New literature Movement of the early twentieth century; but later in life, he became well-known for his classical-style poetry. This paper examines the paradox of old and new in Nie Gannu＇s writings by juxtaposing classical-style with new-style poetry for a comparative analysis. In contrast to new-style poetry, classical-style poetry with its prosodic requirements and formal conventions has a strong technical aspect. Nie Gannu＇s preference for the regulated verse in the seven-syllable line is a deliberate embrace of this technical aspect of classical-style poetry： On the one hand, the absorption in poetic skills and craftsmanship was therapeutic for him in the traumatic years of the socialist revolution; on the other, the restraint of the form and the use of parallel couplet afforded him linguistic resources unavailable in the new-style poetry, so that he was able to express emotional complexity, ambivalence, and an irony that is, in his own words, ＂both there and not quite there.＂ Nie Gannu＇s case demonstrates the importance of understanding the new and old verse forms in each other＇s context. Rather than considering the mapping of modern chinese poetry as following a linear line of progression from classical-style to new-style, this paper proposes a spatial model of configuring the relationship of the two major verse forms in modern times, as mutually defining and constricting.

Lu Xnn situated himself at the crossroads of agricultural tradition and modernist inception during the tumultuous Republican period. As a result, fraught with his affection towards his origins and aiming to register his modernist sensibilities, he widely scattered various animals throughout his fiction and essays. However, more scholarly attention should be paid to the theoretical interpretations of these nonhuman historical and affective agencies and they deserve to be regarded as unique references to the social and political representations of the Republican era. This paper analyzes how Lu Xun represents animal images and discusses the relationship between animality and humanity in his writings. Employing eco-criticism and Foucauldian bio-politics, I argue that the animalistic reading of ＂A Madman＇s Diary＂ contrasts with the conventional cannibalistic reading and marks a revolutionary beginning to Lu Xun＇s concern towards animality and humanity. Later echoing with the social Darwinism popular at the time, Lu Xun invests more nuanced affects in three different categories of animals through which he contemplates domestication, vulnerability, and self-definition. Finally, I argue that by inventing a discourse of animality and humanity, Lu Xun casts his pioneering gaze on chinese morality, modern subjectivity, and the natural environment.

Although the notion of the new woman in modern China has received much scholarly consideration, her usually illiterate rural sister has not received nearly as much critical attention. With the exception of Lu Xun＇s iconic Xianglin sao--from his 1924 story ＂Zhufu＂（The New Year＇s Sacrifice）--almost no depictions of traditional women have been critically appraised in current scholarship. This seems unfortunate when such women can be considered to be both the opposite of and the raw material from which the new woman would spring. This article seeks to begin to address this question by juxtaposing Xianglin sao with another more unfamiliar May Fourth depiction of a rural woman： Liuyi jie （from Bing Xin＇s story of the same name）. By situating Liuyi jie and Xianglin sao firmly within the family structure, the resulting comparison of both stories reveals the structural obstacles that inhibited traditional women from becoming fully active subjects in the new China. The comparison also shows how the May Fourth project established a new woman, one capable of ushering in a newly modern China, whose very existence relies on the discursive silencing of old-style women unable to make this modern transition.

By drawing on the most recent literature, I discuss the phenomenon that the progressive aspect in Mandarin chinese can license *** observation stands in sharp contrast to the fact that the progressive aspect cannot license negative polarity items in such languages as English and Greek.A key difference between the progressive aspect in English/Greek and that in Mandarin chinese is the former draws on the occurrence of the associated event, and the latter draws on the non-occurrence of the associated *** difference determines whether the progressive in a language is veridical or non-veridical, and whether it can license negative polarity items in that language.

With the promise of achieving bilingualism,biliteracy,and cultural pluralism,chinese immersion programs for students from kindergarten to 12th grade(K-12)in North America,especially the US,have been proliferating in the past two *** on this rapidly growing population of non-native chinese learners is also *** research synthesis focuses on 35 selected studies published in recent years on chinese immersion in both chinese and English language journals and *** review found that researchers are exploring a wide range of issues with respect to language and literacy development in chinese immersion programs,including academic achievement in English,language and literacy acquisition in chinese,instructional strategies and classroom interaction,as well as learners’language use and its sociolinguistic *** studies reflect a growing interest in and demand for learning more about the lesser-researched chinese foreign language(CFL)learner population,and this review concludes with suggestions for future research on chinese immersion based on its curricular features as well as specific considerations for conducting research with young,emergent bilingual and biliterate learners.

This study investigates advice-giving in peer-to-peer comment sections on chinese social networking sites. The results show that advice, explanation, experience, and assessment are the four most frequent discursive moves in chinese advice given by peers on social networking sites. Involvement, mitigation, and face-threatening strategies are also utilized frequently by those peers to give directives and express empathy and solidarity on chinese online sites, thereby building supportive relationships among them in online communities. The online peer advice-giving in this study is influenced by multiple aspects of the platform, participants, and language use, presenting distinctive characteristics that differ from other studies.

“Form-meaning pair”is not a distinctive feature of constructions,but a universal feature of all things.A construction must be a *** are the smallest sound-meaning assemblies,but they only represent a symbolic relationship which has no internal structure;thus,they are not *** addition,if morphemes are also treated as constructions,there is a problem of“heterogeneity”in understanding the“form”of *** to the rising“constructionist”and the traditional“atomist”dichotomy,we feel the“constructionist”approach complies better with the actual linguistic *** Grammar leads people to pay close attention to the integrity of constructions and the cognitive mechanisms behind linguistic ***,it is of great value both theoretically and ***,since Construction Grammar has not yet displayed a distinct value in terms of methodology,we must be careful not to overrate it or overestimate it.
