Water Changes and Sources of Siling Co Using Landsat and GRACE Data since 1972

The inland lakes on the Tibetan Plateau(TP)are undergoing significant changes due to their sensitivity to climate.The largest lake in Tibet,Siling Co,has expanded most dramatically during recent decades.Using Landsat,GRACE and meteorological data,the expansion of Siling Co was detailed in four stages and the process was further explained.The results show that the lake area increased from 1647.30 km^(2)in 1972 to 2438.99 km^(2)in 2020.It experienced a slow growth at a rate 6.03 km^(2)/yr from 1972 to 1988,while fluctuating at 1.44 km^(2)/yr during 1989–1997,then accelerated at 60.28 km^(2)/yr between 1998 and 2005,and expanded slowly again at 11.40 km^(2)/yr since 2006.The continued expansion led to its merger with nearby Yagain Co in 2003.Terrestrial water storage(TWS)increase was also observed from GRACE(0.65 cm/yr),with about 0.75 coefficient of determination between the TWS and lake area during 2002–2020.The long-term expansion of Siling Co is related to the increasing trends of temperature and precipitation,but their contributions vary with time span.Specifically,the accelerated stage between 1998 and 2005 can be explained by the increased temperature and precipitation accompanied by a drop in evaporation,while the slow expansion since 2006 was due to the decrease in precipitation and temperature and the rise in evaporation.There is no obvious mass loss of glaciers revealed by GRACE during 2002–2020,which may be related to the negative trend of the temperature.Furthermore,the precipitation may still make a major contribution in this phase,as its average is about 93.9 mm higher than that in 1988–1997.

Retrieval of antarctic sea ice freeboard and thickness from HY-2B satellite altimeter data

antarctic sea ice is an important part of the Earth’s atmospheric system,and satellite remote sensing is an important technology for observing antarctic sea ice.Whether chinese Haiyang-2B(HY-2B)satellite altimeter data could be used to estimate sea ice freeboard and provide alternative antarctic sea ice thickness information with a high precision and long time series,as other radar altimetry satellites can,needs further investigation.This paper proposed an algorithm to discriminate leads and then retrieve sea ice freeboard and thickness from HY-2B radar altimeter data.We first collected the Moderate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer ice surface temperature(IST)product from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration to extract leads from the antarctic waters and verified their accuracy through Sentinel-1 Synthetic Aperture Radar images.Second,a surface classification decision tree was generated for HY-2B satellite altimeter measurements of the antarctic waters to extract leads and calculate local sea surface heights.We then estimated the antarctic sea ice freeboard and thickness based on local sea surface heights and the static equilibrium equation.Finally,the retrieved HY-2B antarctic sea ice thickness was compared with the CryoSat-2 sea ice thickness and the antarctic Sea Ice Processes and Climate(ASPeCt)ship-based observed sea ice thickness.The results indicate that our classification decision tree constructed for HY-2B satellite altimeter measurements was reasonable,and the root mean square error of the obtained sea ice thickness compared to the ship measurements was 0.62 m.The proposed sea ice thickness algorithm for the HY-2B radar satellite fills a gap in this application domain for the HY-series satellites and can be a complement to existing antarctic sea ice thickness products;this algorithm could provide long-time-series and large-scale sea ice thickness data that contribute to research on global climate change.

Status and trends in the stability of the three largest ice shelves in antarctica

The Ross, Filchner-Ronne, and Amery ice shelves are the three largest ice shelves in antarctica, playing a crucial role in supporting the antarctic ice sheet. However, current studies on the stability of the three largest ice shelves primarily focus on singular or limited factors, lacking a comprehensive assessment of multiple parameters. To systematically and in-depth study the stability and trend of the three largest ice shelves, we comprehensively collected and analyzed key parameters, including elevation changes, basal melting, surface meltwater, major rifts propagation rate, suture zones, ice front area change rate,grounding lines, ice velocity, and mass balance. Additionally, we selected the collapsed Larsen B Ice Shelf(LBIS), the rapidly changing and structurally weakened Pine Island Ice Shelf(PIIS), and the accelerating Totten Ice Shelf(TIS) as reference ice shelves. By comparing and analyzing the key parameters between these reference ice shelves and the three largest ice shelves, we find the status and trends in the stability of the latter. Our findings reveal that most key parameters of the three largest ice shelves present relatively minor variations compared to those of the reference ice shelves. Specifically, 50% of the parameters are smaller than those of the accelerating TIS, 88% are smaller than those of the rapidly changing PIIS, and all parameters are smaller than those of the collapsed LBIS. Furthermore, after analyzing parameters that are not smaller than those of the TIS, it is observed that they remain in a stable state. Hence, the three largest ice shelves are currently undergoing natural changes that do not threaten their stability in the short term. Nevertheless, the evolution of the ice shelves under global climate change remains uncertain,making long-term observation and monitoring essential to assess their impact on sea level rise.

The variation in basal channels and basal melt rates of Pine Island Ice Shelf

In recent years,there has been a significant acceleration in the thinning,calving and retreat of the Pine Island Ice Shelf(PIIS).The basal channels,results of enhanced basal melting,have the potential to significantly impact the stability of the PIIS.In this study,we used a variety of remote sensing data,including Landsat,REMA DEM,ICESat-1 and ICESat-2 satellite altimetry observations,and Ice Bridge airborne measurements,to study the spatiotemporal changes in the basal channels from 2003 to 2020 and basal melt rate from 2010 to 2017 of the PIIS under the Eulerian framework.We found that the basal channels are highly developed in the PIIS,with a total length exceeding 450 km.Most of the basal channels are ocean-sourced or groundingline-sourced basal channels,caused by the rapid melting under the ice shelf or near the groundingline.A raised seabed prevented warm water intrusion into the eastern branch of the PIIS,resulting in a lower basal melt rate in that area.In contrast,a deepsea trough facilitates warm seawater into the mainstream and the western branch of the PIIS,resulting in a higher basal melt rate in the main-stream,and the surface elevation changes above the basal channels of the mainstream and western branch are more significant.The El Ni?o event in 2015–2016 possibly slowed down the basal melting of the PIIS by modulating wind field,surface sea temperature and depth seawater temperature.Ocean and atmospheric changes were driven by El Ni?o,which can further explain and confirm the changes in the basal melting of the PIIS.

An improved GNSS ambiguity best integer equivariant estimation method with Laplacian distribution for urban low-cost RTK positioning

The integer least squares(ILS)estimation is commonly used for carrier phase ambiguity resolution(AR).More recently,the best integer equivariant(BIE)estimation has also attracted an attention for complex application scenarios,which exhibits higher reliability by a weighted fusion of integer candidates.However,traditional BIE estimation with Gaussian distribution(GBIE)faces challenges in fully utilizing the advantages of BIE for urban low-cost positioning,mainly due to the presence of outliers and unmodeled errors.To this end,an improved BIE estimation method with Laplacian distribution(LBIE)is proposed,and several key issues are discussed,including the weight function of LBIE,determination of the candidates included based on the OIA test,and derivation of the variance of LBIE solutions for reliability evaluation.The results show that the proposed LBIE method has the positioning accuracy similar to the BIE using multivariate t-distribution(TBIE),and significantly outperforms the ILS-PAR and GBIE methods.In an urban expressway test with a Huawei Mate40 smartphone,the LBIE method has positioning errors of less than 0.5 m in three directions and obtains over 50%improvements compared to the ILS-PAR and GBIE methods.In an urban canyon test with a low-cost receiver STA8100 produced by STMicroelectronics,the positioning accuracy of LBIE in three directions is 0.112 m,0.107 m,and 0.252 m,respectively,with improvements of 17.6%,27.2%,and 26.1%compared to GBIE,and 23.3%,28.2%,and 30.6%compared to ILS-PAR.Moreover,its computational time increases by 30–40%compared to ILS-PAR and is approximately half of that using TBIE.

Effects of Enclosure on Grassland Ecological and Economic Benefits in Northern China

Grasslands in northern China serve the country as both an ecological barrier and a livestock production base.There,installing enclosures has been becoming the major grassland restoration measure adopted by many local governments.However,the effects of restoration on both ecological and production benefits of grassland remain unclear for implemented grassland restoration policies.Therefore,a representative rangeland in northern China,the Maodeng pasture in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region was selected as the study area,and remote sensing monitoring analyses were carried out to quantify the ecological benefits and economic benefits from 2015 to 2021.The results showed that:1) in terms of ecological benefits,the grassland area with a grassland coverage rate of more than 60% accounts for 32.3% of the regional area,and 86.4% of its grassland grew significantly better than the same period in2015,showing a significant improvement in grassland growth.Using the average amount of carbon per unit area as the ecological benefit evaluation index,it increased by 27.1% to 32.48Tg C/yr from 2015 to 2021.2) In terms of economic benefits,both theoretical grass production and livestock carrying capacity increased from 2015 to 2021.Compared to 2015,the theoretical grass production in 2021 increased by 24.8% to 71 900 t.The livestock carrying capacity reached 52 100 sheep units in 2021,nearly 11 000 sheep units more than that in 2015.During the study period,multiple economic indicators(on a per capita basis of permanent residents) for the pastoral area of Xilinhot City to which the Maodeng pasture belongs,have grown steadily.Per capita total income rose from 29 630 yuan(RMB) in2015 to 62 859 yuan(RMB) in 2021.Relying on grassland resources to develop the pastoral ecology also broadens the potential economic development space.Overall,the establishment of the reserve and the experiment of implanting an enclosure policy have had a significant and positive impact on Maodeng pasture’s development from both an ecological and economic persp

The GNSS PWV retrieval using non-observation meteorological parameters based on ERA5 and its relation with precipitation

The pressure and temperature significantly influence precipitable water vapor(PWV) retrieval. Global Navigation Satellite System(GNSS) PWV retrieval is limited because the GNSS stations lack meteorological sensors. First, this article evaluated the accuracy of pressure and temperature in 68 radiosonde stations in China based on ERA5 Reanalysis data from 2015 to 2019 and compared them with GPT3model. Then, the accuracy of pressure and temperature calculated by ERA5 were estimated in 5 representative IGS stations in China. And the PWV calculated by these meteorological parameters from ERA5(ERA5-PWV) were analyzed. Finally, the relation between ERA5-PWV and precipitation was deeply explored using wavelet coherence analysis in IGS stations. These results indicate that the accuracy of pressure and temperature of ERA5 is better than the GPT3 model. In radiosonde stations, the mean BIAS and MAE of pressure and temperature in ERA5 are-0.41/1.15 hpa and-0.97/2.12 K. And the mean RMSEs are 1.35 hpa and 2.87 K, which improve 74.77% and 40.58% compared with GPT3 model. The errors of pressure and temperature of ERA5 are smaller than the GPT3 model in bjfs, hksl and wuh2, and the accuracy of ERA5-PWV is improved by 18.77% compared with the GPT3 model. In addition, there is a significant positive correlation between ERA5-PWV and precipitation. And precipitation is always associated with the sharp rise of ERA5-PWV, which provides important references for rainfall prediction.

Daily sea ice concentration product based on brightness temperature data of FY-3D MWRI in the Arctic

A daily sea ice concentration(SIC)product in the Arctic,derived from the brightness temperature(TB)data of the Microwave Radiation Imager(MWRI)sensor aboard on the FY-3D satellite,is described in this paper.The MWRI TB raw swath data were first processed into daily gridded data and then corrected using the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer 2(AMSR2)sensor.An ASI algorithm,which uses daily dynamic tie points,was adopted to calculate daily SIC at 12.5 km polar stereographic projection from January 2018 to June 2020.Our generated MWRI SIC product was compared with the AMSR2 SIC based on the ASI algorithm that uses fixed tie points.For more detailed comparison,we then compared our MWRI SIC with the SIC from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer(MODIS)data.The mean bias between our MWRI SIC and AMSR2 SIC is 4.24%.The absolute values of biases between the daily MWRI SIC and MODIS SIC range from 0.14%to 10.76%,better than the MWRI SIC product based on the NT2 algorithm published by the chinese National Satellite Meteorological center.The results show that our MWRI SIC product has a good quality and can be used as a basic dataset for sea ice extent records.The dataset is available at http://***/10.11922/sciencedb.00137.

1.Introduction Gravity data provide significant insights on ice mass balance and geological structure studies in antarctica,which is the largest ice sheet on the earth(Xu,2001;Alley et al.,2005).Since the 1950s,the gravity ties have been introduced to antarctica from Australia and South America(Sledzinski,2001;Amalvict,2004),which adopted the approach of relative gravity measurements with pendulum or spring gravimeters.Absolute gravity measurements were later conducted in antarctica by several countries to provide gravity bases and to derive its dynamic change with the technique advance in gravimeter instrumentation.By 2009,25 absolute gravity surveys had been carried out at 14 stations in antarctica(Mäkinen et al.,2007;E et al.,2007,2011;Kazama et al.,2013).

Decoding the inconsistency of six cropland maps in China

Accurate cropland information is critical for agricultural planning and production,especially in foodstressed countries like China.Although widely used medium-to-high-resolution satellite-based cropland maps have been developed from various remotely sensed data sources over the past few decades,considerable discrepancies exist among these products both in total area and in spatial distribution of croplands,impeding further applications of these datasets.The factors influencing their inconsistency are also unknown.In this study,we evaluated the consistency and accuracy of six cropland maps widely used in China in circa 2020,including three state-of-the-art 10-m products(i.e.,Google Dynamic World,ESRI Land Cover,and ESA WorldCover)and three 30-m ones(i.e.,GLC_FCS30,GlobeLand 30,and CLCD).We also investigated the effects of landscape fragmentation,climate,and agricultural management.Validation using a ground-truth sample revealed that the 10-m-resolution WorldCover provided the highest accuracy(92.3%).These maps collectively overestimated chinese cropland area by up to 56%.Up to 37%of the land showed spatial inconsistency among the maps,concentrated mainly in mountainous regions and attributed to the varying accuracy of cropland maps,cropland fragmentation and management practices such as irrigation.Our work shed light on the promotion of future cropland mapping efforts,especially in highly inconsistent regions.
