Parameterization of height-diameter and crown radius-diameter relationships across the globe

The tree height-diameter at breast height(H-DBH)and crown radius-DBH(CR-DBH)relationships are key for forest carbon/biomass estimation,parameterization in vegetation models and vegetation-atmosphere *** the H-DBH relationship has been widely investigated on site or regional scales,and a few of studies have involved CR-DBH relationships based on plot-level data,few studies have quantitatively verifed the universality of these two relationships on a global *** study evaluated the ability of 29 functions to ft the H-DBH and CR-DBH relationships for six different plant functional types(PFTs)on a global scale,based on a global plant trait *** showed that most functions were able to capture the H-DBH relationship for tropical PFTs and boreal needleleaf trees relatively accurately,but slightly less for temperate PFTs and boreal broadleaf trees(BB).For boreal PFTs,the S-shaped Logistic function ftted the H-DBH relationship best,while for temperate PFTs the Chapman-Richards function performed *** tropical needleleaf trees,the fractional function of DBH satisfactorily captured the H-DBH relationship,while for tropical broadleaf trees,the Weibull function and a composite function of fractions were the best *** CR-DBH,the ftting capabilities of all the functions were comparable for all PFTs except *** Logistic function performed best for two boreal PFTs and temperate broadleaf trees,but for temperate needleleaf trees and two tropical PFTs,some exponential functions demonstrated higher *** work provides valuable information for parameterization improvements in vegetation models and forest feld investigations.

Epimedin B(EB)is one of the main flavonoid ingredients present in Epimedium brevicornum Maxim.,a traditional herb widely used in *** previous study showed that EB was a stronger inducer of melanogenesis and an activator of tyrosinase(TYR).However,the role of EB in melanogenesis and the mechanism underlying the regulation remain ***,as an extension to our previous investigation,we provide comprehensive evidence of EB-induced pigmentation in vivo and in vitro and elucidate the melanogenesis mechanism by assessing its effects on the TYR family of proteins(TYRs)in terms of expression,activity,and *** results showed that EB increased TYRs expression through microphthalmia-associated transcription factor-mediated p-Akt(referred to as protein kinase B(PKB))/glycogen synthase kinase 3β(GSK3β)/β-catenin,p-p70 S6 kinase cascades,and protein 38(p38)/mitogen-activated protein(MAP)kinase(MAPK)and extracellular regulated protein kinases(ERK)/MAPK pathways,after which EB increased the number of melanosomes and promoted their maturation for melanogenesis in melanoma cells and human primary melanocytes/skin ***,EB exerted repigmentation by stimulating TYR activity in hydroquinone-and N-phenylthiourea-induced TYR inhibitive models,including melanoma cells,zebrafish,and ***,EB ameliorated monobenzone-induced depigmentation in vitro and in vivo through the enhancement of TYRs stability by inhibiting TYR misfolding,TYR-related protein 1 formation,and retention in the endoplasmic reticulum and then by downregulating the ubiquitination and proteolysis *** data conclude that EB can target TYRs and alter their expression,activity,and stability,thus stimulating their pigmentation function,which might provide a novel rational strategy for hypopigmentation treatment in the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries.

Phorbol esters are recognized for their dual role as anti-HIV-1 agents and as activators of protein kinase C(PKC).The efficacy of phorbol esters in binding with PKC is attributed to the presence of oxygen groups at positions C20,C3/C4,and C9 of ***,the lipids located at positions C12/C13 are essential for both the anti-HIV-1 activity and the formation of the PKC-ligand *** influence of the cyclopropane ring at positions C13 and C14 in phorbol derivatives on their anti-HIV-1 activity requires further *** research entailed the hydrolysis of phorbol,producing seco-cyclic phorbol *** anti-HIV-1 efficacy of these derivatives was assessed,and the affinity constant(Kd)for PKC-δprotein of selected seco-cyclic phorbol derivatives was determined through isothermal titration *** findings suggest that the chemical modification of cyclopropanols could affect both the anti-HIV-1 activity and the PKC binding ***,compound S11,with an EC_(50) of 0.27μmol·L^(−1) and a CC_(50) of 153.92μmol·L^(−1),demonstrated a potent inhibitory effect on the intermediate products of HIV-1 reverse transcription(ssDNA and 2LTR),likely acting at the viral entry stage,yet showed no affinity for the PKC-δ*** results position compound S11 as a potential candidate for further preclinical investigation and for studies aimed at elucidating the pharmacological mechanism underlying its anti-HIV-1 activity.

Mars, the intriguing red planet, is one of the planets most similar to the Earth in our solar system. It is widely accepted that Mars could have had a warm and wet climate in its early history supported by numerous lines of evidence, e.g. topography, canyons, outflow channels, presence of phyllosilicates and evaporative salts,sedimentary formation, and many others (e.g.[1]), and thus Mars is believed to once have a potentially habitable environment which could be able to supply fundamental conditions for the evolution of potential lives.

Systematic review and Meta-analysis of brain plasticity associated with electroacupuncture in experimental ischemic stroke

OBJECTIVE: To systematically evaluate the role of electroacupuncture in maintaining brain plasticity in ischemic stroke mediated brain damage. METHODS: We searched for all relevant trials published through Oct 7, 2022 from seven databases. Methodological quality was assessed using the CAMARADES Risk of Bias Tool. A Meta-analysis of comparative effects was performed using Review Manager v.5.3 software. RESULTS: A total of 101 studies involving 2148 animals were included. For most studies, primary outcomes results of the Meta-analysis indicate that EA significantly improved ischemic stroke rat's postsynaptic density thickness [Standardized Mean Difference(SMD) = 1.41, 95% confidence interval(CI)(0.59, 2.23), P = 0.0008], numerical density of synapses [SMD = 1.55, 95% CI(0.48, 2.63), P = 0.005] compared with non-EA-treated. Similarly, EA could improve parts of biomarkers of synapses, neurogenesis, angiogenesis and neurotrophin activity than the control group(P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: The existing evidence suggests EA regulating ischemic stroke may be through brain plasticity. More rigorous and high quality studies should be conducted in the future.

Effect of chinese Medicine in Patients with COVID-19: A Multi-center Retrospective Cohort Study

Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness and safety of chinese medicine(CM) in the treatment of coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19) in China. Methods: A multi-center retrospective cohort study was carried out, with cumulative CM treatment period of 3 days during hospitalization as exposure. Data came from consecutive inpatients from December 19, 2019 to May 16, 2020 in 4 medical centers in Wuhan, China. After data extraction, verification and cleaning, confounding factors were adjusted by inverse probability of treatment weighting(IPTW), and the Cox proportional hazards regression model was used for statistical analysis. Results:A total of 2,272 COVID-19 patients were included. There were 1,684 patients in the CM group and 588 patients in the control group. Compared with the control group, the hazard ratio(HR) for the deterioration rate in the CM group was 0.52 [95% confidence interval(CI): 0.41 to 0.64, P<0.001]. The results were consistent across patients of varying severity at admission, and the robustness of the results were confirmed by 3 sensitivity analyses. In addition, the HR for all-cause mortality in the CM group was 0.29(95% CI: 0.19 to 0.44, P<0.001).Regarding of safety, the proportion of patients with abnormal liver function or renal function in the CM group was smaller. Conclusion: This real-world study indicates that the combination of a full-course CM therapy on the basic conventional treatment, may safely reduce the deterioration rate and all-cause mortality of COVID-19patients. This result can provide the new evidence to support the current treatment of COVID-19. Additional prospective clinical trial is needed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of specific CM interventions.(Registration No. ChiCTR2200062917)

Investigating the development toxicity of perfuorinated iodine alkanes(PFIs)is critical,given their estrogenic effects through binding with estrogen receptors(ERs).In the present study,two PFIs,including dodecafuoro-1,6-diiodohexane(PFHx DI)and tridecafuorohexyl iodide(PFHx I),with binding preference to ERαand ERβ,respectively,were selected to evaluate their effects on proliferation and differentiation of the mouse embryonic stem cells(m ESCs).The results revealed that,similar to E_(2),50μmol/L PFHx DI accelerated the cell proliferation of the m *** PFI stimulation at the exposure concentrations of 2–50μmol/L promoted the differentiation of the m ESCs as characterized by the upregulation of differentiation-related biomarkers(i.e.,Otx2 and Dnmt3β)and downregulation of pluripotency genes(i.e.,Oct4,Nanog,Sox2,Prdm14 and Rex1).Comparatively,PFHx DI exhibited higher induction effect on the differentiation of the m ESCs than did PFHx *** tests on ER signaling indicated that both PFI compounds induced exposure concentration-dependent expressions of ER signaling-related biomarkers(i.e.,ERα,ERβand Caveolin-1)in the m ESCs,and the downstream ER responsive genes(i.e.,c-fos,c-myc and c-jun)well responded to PFHx I *** role of ER in PFI-induced effects on the m ESCs was further validated by the antagonistic experiments using an ER inhibitor(ICI).The findings demonstrated that PFIs triggered ER signaling,and perturbed the differentiation program of the m ESCs,causing the potential health risk during early stage of development.
