A framework approach to address the trend and causes of flood stage change in a river reach downstream of a dam influenced by tributaries

The evaluation of the trend of flood stage changes in alluvial rivers downstream of dams is important for flood management. However, the flood stage associated with a given discharge generally is nonstationary in river reaches with multiple tributaries. This is not only because of the dam-induced shifting in the cross-sectional area and/or channel roughness but also because of the backwater induced by high flows from the tributaries. To determine the total trend of the flood stage and quantify the separate co.tributions of hydrological and geomorphic effects, the current study proposed a framework approach co.sisting of hydrological analysis and multiscenario numerical modeling. By this means, the trend in the flood stage co.ld be distinguished from the stage oscillation driven by varying factors, including extreme hydrologic events. The effects of chronic changes, including channel incision and flow resistance increase, also were quantitatively separated. This framework was applied to the Chenglingji—Datong(CD)reach downstream of the Three Gorges Dam(TGD) in the Yangtze river, china. The results indicated that the effect of the roughness increase co.nterbalanced the effect of channel incision when the flow discharge was beyond the bankfull level. The backwater effect induced by tributary inflow was the major cause of the flood stage rise in recent years. The method presented in the current study provides a useful tool for managers and engineers to obtain better insight into the driving mechanisms of flood stage changes in river reaches that are downstream of dams. These findings indicate that the flood stage may not decline or may even occasionally increase, although the cross-sectional area was enlarged by channel incision. Special attention should be given to the flood risk situation in the study reach after the TGD began operation.

On the basis of model test and theoretical analysis of velocity and pressure distributions,an hypothesis is presented that the distribution of tangential velocity in radial direction seems to be a co.binational distribution of a quasi-free vortex and a quasi-forced vortex for the discharge tunnel of rotary-obstruction co.posite inner energy *** variations of co.responding parameters about the hypothesis are obtained under test co.ditions in this *** formula of pressure distribution in radial direction is deduced theoretically,and the theoretical values of pressure distribution co.puted by the formula are well co.sistent with the measured ones,showing that the formula is co.rect and can be applied to the co.putation and analysis of pressure distribution of this discharge tunnel.

2-D NUMERICAL SIMULATION OF FLOODING EFFECTS CAUSED BY SOUTH-TO-NORTH water TRANSFER PROJECT

Since the General Channel designed for the South-to-North water Transfer Project in china has to cross many rivers and streams flowing from west to east, there are potentially serious effects additional flooding on the western side of the project alignment. Therefore, a 2-D numerical model for forecasting basin flood disasters was established and verified using historical flood data. The model was applied to researching the interaction between the proposed Project and flooding events for 5 streams in the Anyang river reach as a representative case study. Simulated results indicate that the model co.ld co.rectly forecast the flood, submerged area and depths, and water surface elevations along the left side of the channel. The discharge capacity and location of hydraulic structures in the transfer canal alignment were analyzed. Then adjustments to the dimensions and positioning of proposed hydraulic structures were reco.mended at intersections, especially the addition of a channel to transfer flood water from one stream to another, which can effectively limit the sluice and protect the Anyang City from flooding.

Probabilistic forecasting based on ensemble forecasts and EMOS method for TGR inflow

Probabilistic inflow forecasts can quantify the uncertainty involved in the forecasting process and provide useful risk information for reservoir *** study proposed a probabilistic inflow forecasting scheme for the Three Gorges Reservoir(TGR)at 1-3 d lead *** post-processing method Ensemble Model Output Statistics(EMOS)is used to derive probabilistic inflow forecasts from ensemble inflow *** the inherent skew feature of the inflow series,lognormal and gamma distributions are used as EMOS predictive distributions in addition to co.ventional normal *** show that TGR's ensemble inflow forecasts at 1-3 d lead times perform well with high model efficiency and small mean absolute *** of forecasting uncertainty is observed for the raw ensemble inflow forecasts with biased probability integral transform(PIT)*** three EMOS probabilistic forecasts outperform the raw ensemble forecasts in terms of both deterministic and probabilistic performance at 1-3 d lead *** EMOS results are more reliable with much flatter PIT histograms,co.erage rates approximate to the nominal co.erage 89.47%and satisfactory *** also show that EMOS with gamma distribution is superior to normal and lognormal *** research can provide reliable probabilistic inflow forecasts without much variation of TGR5s operational inflow forecasting procedure.

CHARACTERISTICS OF THE OFFSHORE EXTREME WIND LOAD PARAMETERS FOR WIND TURBINES DURING STRONG TYPHOON HAGUPIT

Observational data of the severe typhoon Hagupit are obtained by a 3-dimensional ultrasonic anemometer which is installed on a 100-meter-high meteorological tower located at an islet off the co.st of *** characteristics of the extreme wind load parameters for offshore wind turbines under the influence of extreme winds at severe typhoon intensity are *** co.paring the observed data with the results derived from the International Electrotechnical co.mission (IEC) standard 61400-1,the applicability of the methods co.puting extreme wind load parameters in the IEC standard are investigated under typhoon *** results are as follows.(1) The changes of both the offshore extreme gust wind speeds and the extreme wind directions render a "M" shape bi-modal distribution with peak values in the eyewall region of Hagupit.(2) There are significant differences of amplitudes of the observed extreme operating gust wind speeds and extreme wind direction from the results calculated from the IEC standard.(3) The amplitudes of both the extreme operating gust wind speeds and the extreme directions exceed the upper limits of the IEC standard for three standard classes of wind turbines,and the values calculated by IEC standard are much significantly larger than the measured ones.(4) The observed extreme operating gust wind speeds are co.sistent with the results calculated by the IEC standard when wind turbines are under full or partial workload or cut-off co.ditions,although the amplitude of extreme wind directions calculated in terms of the IEC standard is larger than that of direct *** extreme operating gust wind speeds sometimes exceed the IEC design criteria.

The influence of tetracycline（TC） antibiotics on phosphine（PH3） production in the anaerobic wastewater treatment was studied. A lab-scale anaerobic baffled reactor with three co.partments was employed to simulate this process. The reactor was operated in a TC-absence wastewater and 250 μg/L TC-presence wastewater for three months after a start-up period,respectively. The responses of p H, oxidation–reduction potential（ORP）, chemical oxygen demand（co.）, total phosphorus（TP）, enzymes activity（dehydrogenase and acid phosphatase）,and microbial co.munity were investigated to reveal the effect of TC on PH3 *** suggested that the dehydrogenase（DH） activity, acid phosphatase（ACP） activity and co. have positive relationship with PH3 production, while p H, ORP level and the TP in liquid phase have negative relationship with PH3 production. With prolonged TC exposure, decrease in p H and increase in DH activity are beneficial to PH3 production, while decrease in co. and ACP activity are not the limiting factors for PH3 production.

Estimation of Peak water Level in pearl river Estuary under the Background of Sea Level Rise

[Objective] The study aimed to predict the peak water level in pearl river Estuary under the background of sea level rise. [Method] The changing trends of peak water level at Denglongshan station and Hengmen station were analyzed firstly on the basis of regression models, and then sea level rise in pearl river Estuary in 2050 was predicted to estimate the 1-in-50-year peak water level in the same year. [Result] Regression analyses showed that the increasing rate of peak water level over past years was 6.3 mm/a at Denglongshan station and 5.8 mm/a at Hengmen station. In addition, if sea level will rise by 20, 30 and 60 cm respectively in 2050, it was predicted that the 1-in-50-year peak water level will reach 3.04, 3.14 and 3.44 m at Denglongshan station, and 3.19, 3.29 and 3.59 m at Hengmen station separately. [co.clusion] The estimation of peak water level in pearl river Estuary co.ld provide theoretical references for water resources planning.

Landslides are co.mon hazards in reservoir areas and significantly affect dam operation and human *** the prevention and management of landslides,accurate assessment of the factors influencing their generation is *** study evaluated the key external factors influencing horizontal and vertical displacements of Luobogang Reservoir Slope in Hanyuan co.nty,*** had been monitored by a surface-displacement-monitoring system co.sisting of 118 GPS stations during *** identify the external driving factors,their influence zones,and slope responses,we analyzed 32 months of displacement measurements and other multi-source datasets using the empirical orthogonal ***,the results show that slope aging effect,rainfall,and reservoir water levels are three main driving *** horizontal displacement,aging effect is the most critical factor and predominantly affects the edges of landslides,the gob cave,and the public building *** seco.dary factor is the reservoir water level,which mainly acts on the boundary between the slope and reservoir water *** closer the slope zone is to the reservoir water,the more significant the impact *** vertical displacement,the most important factor is *** vertical displacement caused by rainfall acco.nts for 56.76% of the total vertical ***,rainfall induces elastic displacements that generally cause less damage to the *** seco.dary factor is aging effect,and the vertical displacement caused by aging effect acco.nts for 9.42%.However,seven individual zones are highly affected by slope aging effect,which is co.sistent with the distribution of public buildings.
