monitoring of regional groundwater levels provides important information for quantifying groundwater depletion and assessing impacts on the environment. Historically, groundwater level monitoring wells in Beijing Plain, china, were installed for assessing groundwater resources and for monitoring the cone of depression. monitoring wells are clustered around well fields and urban areas. There is urgent need to upgrade the existing monitoring wells to a regional groundwater level monitoring network to acquire information for integrated water resources management. A new method was proposed for designing a regional groundwater level monitoring network. The method is based on groundwater regime zone mapping. Groundwater regime zone map delineates distinct areas of possible different groundwater level variations and is useful for locating groundwater monitoring wells. This method was applied to Beijing Plain to upgrade a regional groundwater level monitoring network.

Loess water erosion constitutes a great threat to the safety of the West-to-East Gas Pipeline in china. Through aerial-photo interpretation and investigation of the typical region （Zichang （子长）-Yongping （水坪） Section） where the loess water erosion problem is intensely developed, the influence of water erosion on the pipeline in the loess area can be manifested as the following 3 aspects：（1） surface and gully erosion causes the base overhead and pipeline exposure; （2） underground erosion forms caves, which may cause surface subsidence and foundation failure; （3） water erosion of loess may destroy the balance of slopes and cause geological hazards like landslide, collapse and debris flow. Presently, the controlling methods are mainly concrete or grouted rubble protection. These methods are not only high in cost but also have poor effect and poor durability. This article suggests a method of controlling the loess water erosion problem with soil solidified material. Then, related tests are conducted. The results of uniaxial compression, permeability, and anti-erosion ability tests indicate that the mechanical properties and anti-erosion ability of solidified loess were improved significantly.

The upper reaches of the Yellow River in northeastern Tibetan Plateau are geohazards *** evolution of the Yellow River,chronology of some landslides,and spatiotemporal distribution characteristics of super large scale and giant landslides within the region are summarized using paleoclimate evidence,and the relationship between the intensive landslide period and climatic changes since the Last Glacial period is *** is concluded that （1） Super large scale and giant landslides are distributed widely within the region,particularly in the Qunke-Jianzha basin.（2） The chronological sequence of landslides is established by dating the slip zones of landslides and analyzing the relations between landslides and their overlying or underlying loess *** landslide development periods are determined：53-49 ka BP,33-24 ka BP,10-8 ka BP,5-3.5 ka BP,and the present.（3） These correspond closely to warm and wet periods during the last 100,000 years,i.e.,two weak paleosol development stages of Malan loess deposited during the last Glacial period in the Chinese loess Plateau,L1-4 and L1-2 that belong to the marine oxygen isotope stage 3,the last deglaeial period,the Holocene Optimum,and the modern global warming period.（4） Landslide triggers may be closely linked to warm and wet periods related to rapid climatic transitions.

The eutrophication of Chaohu Lake in china is mainly attributed to nitrate inflow from non-point sources in the lake catchment. In this study,biological nitrate reduction from groundwater in the Chaohu Lake Catchment was investigated under laboratory conditions in a continuous upflow reactor. Sodium acetate served as the carbon source and electron donor. Results showed that a carbon-to-nitrogen(C/N) molar ratio of 3:1 and hydraulic retention time(HRT) of 8 d could achieve the most rapid nitrate nitrogen(NO_3^--N) depletion(from 100 mg/L to 1 mg/L within120 h). This rate was confirmed when field groundwater was tested in the reactor, in which a NO_3^--N removal rate of 97.71% was achieved(from60.35 mg/L to 1.38 mg/L within 120 h). Different levels of the initial NO_3^--N concentration(30, 50, 70, and 100 mg/L) showed observable influence on the denitrification rates, with an overall average NO_3^--N removal efficiency of 98.25% at 120 h. Nitrite nitrogen(NO_2^--N)accumulated in the initial 12 h, and then kept decreasing, until it reached 0.0254 mg/L at 120 h. Compared with the initial value, there was a slight accumulation of 0.04 mg/L for the ammonia nitrogen(NH4-N) concentration in the effluent, which is, however, less than the limit *** results can provide a reference for evaluating performance of denitrification in situ.

The enhanced landslide and debris-flow activity after the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake in china has given a new example of this phenomenon.

Earthquake-induced landslides can seriously aggravate the earthquake's destructive consequences and have caused widespread concern in recent decades. The Xianshuihe fault is a large active left-lateral strike-slip fault in the southeast margin of Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, Southwest china, where the frequent strong earthquakes have brought abundant geo-hazards. This study focuses mainly on exploring and predicting the landslide scenes induced by the potential earthquakes. Firstly, the sophisticated Newmark model is improved through landslide cases induced by the Ms7.9 Luhuo earthquake in 1973 to adapt the field seismotectonics of the Xianshuihe fault zone. Then, it is used to predict the landslide scenes under one speculated potential earthquake scenario with the similar focal mechanism with the Luhuo earthquake. The preliminary results show that the slope displacement resulted from Newmark model can reflect spatial distribution characteristics ofearthquake-induced landslides. The predicted potential earthquake-induced landslide scenes present an obvious extending trend along the Xianshuihe fault. The landslide hazard is greater in the northeast regions than southwest regions of the Xianshuihe fault, where there are more complex topographic conditions. The study procedure will be a helpful demonstration for exploration and prediction of landslide scenes under potential earthquakes in the regions with high seismic activity.

The continuous increase of nitrate(NO_(3)^(-))level in rivers is a hot issue in the ***,the driving mechanism of high NO_(3)^(-)level in large rivers is still lacking,which has limited the use of river water and increased the cost of water *** this study,multiple isotopes and source resolution models are applied to identify the driving mechanism of high NO_(3)^(-)level and key processes of nitrogen cycling in the lower reaches of the Yellow River(LRYR).The major sources of NO_(3)^(-)were sewage and manure(SAM)in the low-flow season and soil nitrogen(SN)and chemical fertilizer(CF)in the high-flow *** was the most key process of nitrogen cycling in the ***,in the biological removal processes,denitrification may not occur *** temporal variation of contributions of NO_(3)^(-)sources were estimated by a source resolution model in the *** proportional contributions of SAM and CF to NO_(3)^(-)in the low-flow and high-flow season were 32.5%-52.3%,44.2%-46.2%and 36.0%-40.8%,54.9%-56.9%,*** driving mechanisms of high NO_(3)^(-)level were unreasonable sewage discharge,intensity rainfall runoff,nitrification and lack of nitrate removal *** control the NO_(3)^(-)concentration,targeted measures should be implemented to improve the capacity of sewage and wastewater treatment,increase the utilization efficiency of nitrogen fertilizer and construct ecological *** study deepens the understanding of the driving mechanism of high nitrate level and provides a vital reference for nitrogen pollution control in rivers to other area of the world.

Loess has unique compositions and structural characteristics and can be used for environmental *** between the surface characteristics of the Malan loess from the suburbs of Taiyuan,Shanxi Province before and after reaction with Cr(Ⅲ) solution were studied by SEM/EDS,IR and *** results showed that the Malan loess has a strong ability to remove Cr(Ⅲ) from the *** surface characteristics of loess include an effect on Cr(Ⅲ) in solution,as supported by the strong test evidence including the disappearance of Cr peak in the EDS spectrum,the disappearance of carbonate characteristic peaks in the infrared spectrogram,and the positive correlation between Fe and Cr peaks.

During Jan.1995 to Dec.1996, monthly investigations on the zoobenthic communities of West Lake, samples were collected from six sampling stations. A total of 26 species of macrozoobenthos were identified. The seasonal changes in density and biomass of zoobenthos in this lake were analyzed. The annual mean densities were 980～2751 ind/m\+2 and mean biomass was 19.69-122.80 g/m\+2. The densities in winter and early spring were higher than those in summer and autumn. Comparative study of theprevious data (1982 to 1983) collected by the authors, showed that the succession of zoobenthic communities, dominated by \%Procludius choreus\% in density and \%Bellamya purificata\% in biomass, had been occurred in Xiaonan sub\|lake after Qiantang River water was drawn into it; and that the species and biomass of zoobenthos were then increased and the density was decreased. In other sub\|lakes, the dominant species were \%Limnodrilus hoffmeisteri\% and \%Tokunagayusurika akamusi \%in density and \%Branchiura sowerbyi\% and \%Tokunagayusurika akamusi \%in biomass. The water quality was bad in these sub\|lakes because these dominant species are indicators of eutrophication. According to the Margalef index and Goodnight index, West Lake is still an eutrophic lake. Only the water quality of Xiaonan sub\|lake was improved after water drawn from the Qiantang River was introduced into it.
