Design of a large momentum acceptance proton therapy gantry utilizing AG-CCT magnets

The application of superconducting (SC) technology enables magnets to excite strong fields with small footprints, which has great potential for miniaturizing proton therapy gantries. However, the slow ramping rate of SC magnets results in a low treatment efficiency compared with normal-conducting (NC) gantries. To address this problem, this study proposes a compact proton therapy gantry design with a large momentum acceptance utilizing alternating-gradient canted-cosine-theta (AG-CCT) SC magnets. In our design, a high-transmission degrader is mounted in the middle of the gantry, and the upstream beamline employs NC magnets with small apertures. Downstream of the degrader, large-bore AG-CCT magnets with strong alternating focusing gradients are set symmetrically as a local achromat, which realizes a momentum acceptance of 20% (or 40% in the energy domain). Therefore, only three magnetic working points are required to cover a treatment energy of 70-230 MeV. Owing to the large momentum acceptance, the proton beam after the degrader can be directly delivered to the isocenter without truncating its energy spectrum, which can significantly increase the treatment efficiency but causes severe dispersion effects during pencil beam scanning. Therefore, a compensation method was introduced by tuning the normal and skewed quadrupoles during the scanning process. As a result, the new gantry not only presents a remarkable reduction in the size and weight of the facility but also shows good potential for fast treatment.

Properties of the phase diagram from the Nambu-Jona-Lasino model with a scalar-vector interaction

We investigated the properties of the phase diagram of high-order susceptibilities, speed of sound, and polytropic index based on an extended Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model with an eight-quark scalar-vector interaction. Non-monotonic behavior was observed in all these quantities around the phase transition boundary, which also revealed the properties of the critical point. Further, this study indicated that the chiral phase transition boundary and critical point could vary depending on the scalar-vector coupling constant GSV\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$$G_\text {SV}$$\end{document}. The back-streaming white-neutron beamline (Back-n) of the china Spallation Neutron Source is an essential neutron- research platform built for the study of nuclear data, neutron physics, and neutron applications. Many types of cross-sectional neutron-reaction measurements have been performed at Back-n since early 2018. These measurements have shown that a significant number of gamma rays can be transmitted to the experimental stations of Back-n along with the neutron beam. These gamma rays, commonly referred to as in-beam gamma rays, can induce a non-negligible experimental background in neutron-reaction measurements. Studying the characteristics of in-beam gamma rays is important for understanding the experimental background. However, measuring in-beam gamma rays is challenging because most gamma-ray detectors are sensitive to neutrons; thus, discriminating between neutron-induced signals and those from in-beam gamma rays is difficult. In this study, we propose the use of the black resonance filter method and a CeBr3 scintillation detector to measure the characteristics of the in-beam gamma rays of Back-n. Four types of black resonance filters, Ta-181, Co-59, Ag-nat, and Cd-nat, were used in this measurement. The time-of-flight (TOF) technique was used to select the detector signals remaining in the absorption region of the TOF spectra, which were mainly induced by in-beam gamma rays. The energy distribution and flux of the in-beam gamma rays of Back-n were determined by analyzing the deposited energy spectra of the CeBr3 scintillation detector and using Monte Carlo simulations. Based on the results of this study, the background contributions from in-beam gamma rays in neutron-reaction measurements at Back-n can be reasonably evaluated, which is beneficial for enhancing both the experimental methodology and data analysis.

The cooling storage ring (CSR) external-target experiment (CEE) is a spectrometer used in construction to study the properties of nuclear matter in high-baryon density regions at the Heavy-Ion Research Facility in Lanzhou (HIRFL). This study presents the design, simulation, manufacturing, and testing of a half-size prototype of a multi-wire drift chamber (MWDC) for the CEE. First, the performance of the MWDC connected to homemade electronics was simulated. The results demonstrated that an energy resolution of 18.5% % for 5.9-keV X-rays and a position resolution of 194 mu m for protons can be achieved by the current design. Because the size of the largest MWDC reached 176 cm x 314 cm, a set of 98 cm x 98 cm prototypes was built using the new techniques. The positioning accuracy of the anode wires in this prototype is better than 20 mu m. After optimization, using commercially available electronics, the prototype can achieved an energy resolution of 19.7% % for a Fe-55 X-ray source. The CEE-MWDC detector and electronics were simultaneously tested. An energy resolution of 22% % was achieved for the Fe-55 source; the track residuals were approximately 330 mu m for the cosmic rays. The results demonstrate that the current design and techniques meet the requirements of the CEE-MWDC array.

Cascade failure modeling and resilience analysis of mine cyber physical systems under deliberate attacks

Guided by the intelligent construction of coal mines and integrating the concept of the Cyber-Physical System (CPS), a novel approach to a coal mine information-physical fusion system is proposed. This concept emerges from the advancement of intelligent mines and the growing need for enhanced safety in coal mine operations. From a system safety perspective, this approach aims to effectively evaluate security issues by better integrating the informational and physical layers of intelligent mines. Currently, research in areas such as power grids and water networks has widely adopted concepts of cascade failures and robustness. It is suggested that the CPS framework be adapted to the mining sector. Considering the critical role of coal mines in china's energy security and their vulnerability to cyber attacks, a mine-specific CPS system is designed. This system incorporates a model of mine information-physical fusion, including networks for mine operations, management, and control, tailored to the unique conditions of mine shafts and underground settings. Utilizing Markov process theory, the paper delves into the theoretical study of the cascade failure process under deliberate attack strategies. This analysis is essential to effectively assess the safety issues within the information-physical system, providing vital support for fault prediction and safety analysis. The model of cascading failures in the mine information-physical system is developed, and based on an analysis of resilience and robustness, the study identifies key factors influencing the security of mine information-physical systems. Critical factors affecting the reliability of these systems include the number of system nodes, node coupling, edge count, and the interconnection methods of the dual-layer dependency network. The paper concludes by discussing the challenges in analyzing the security of information-physical systems and suggesting directions for future research.

Towards adaptable synchrotron image restoration pipeline

Synchrotron microscopic data commonly suffer from poor image quality with degraded resolution incurred by instrumentation defects or experimental conditions. Image restoration methods are often applied to recover the reduced resolution, providing improved image details that can greatly facilitate scientific discovery. Among these methods, deconvolution techniques are straightforward, yet either require known prior information or struggle to tackle large experimental data. Deep learning (DL)-based super-resolution (SR) methods handle large data well, however data scarcity and model generalizability are problematic. In addition, current image restoration methods are mostly offline and inefficient for many beamlines where high data volumes and data complexity issues are encountered. To overcome these limitations, an online image-restoration pipeline that adaptably selects suitable algorithms and models from a method repertoire is promising. In this study, using both deconvolution and pretrained DL-based SR models, we show that different restoration efficacies can be achieved on different types of synchrotron experimental data. We describe the necessity, feasibility, and significance of constructing such an image-restoration pipeline for future synchrotron experiments.

Investigation of multinucleon transfer processes in the Langevin equation model

Multinucleon transfer in low-energy heavy-ion collisions is increasingly considered a promising approach for generating exotic nuclei. Understanding the complex mechanisms involved in multinucleon transfer processes presents significant challenges for the theoretical investigation of nuclear reactions. A Langevin equation model was developed and employed to investigate multinucleon transfer processes. The 40Ar+232Th\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$$\mathrm{{40}Ar} + \mathrm{{232}Th}$$\end{document} reaction was simulated, and the calculated Wilczy & nacute;ski plot was used to verify the model. Additionally, to study the dynamics of multinucleon transfer reactions, the 136Xe+238U\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$$\mathrm{{136}Xe} + \mathrm{{238}U}$$\end{document} and 136Xe+209Bi\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$$\mathrm{{136}Xe} + \mathrm{{209}Bi}$$\end{document} reactions were simulated, and the corresponding TKE-mass and angular distributions were computed to analyze the energy dissipation and scattering angles. Material Composition of the Newly Discovered Zongzhuo Formation Sedimentary Mélange in Dingri Area, Southern Tibet, and its Constraints on the Basin Controlling Dingri-Gamba Fault

The study of sedimentary m & eacute;langes holds pivotal importance in understanding orogenic processes and unveiling geodynamic mechanisms. In this study, we present findings on zircon U-Pb isotopes and whole-rock elemental data concerning the recently uncovered Zongzhuo Formation sedimentary m & eacute;langes within the Dingri area. Field observations reveal the predominant composition of the Zongzhuo Formation, characterized by a matrix of sandstone-mudstone mixed with sand-conglomerates within native blocks exhibiting soft sediment deformation. Moreover, exotic blocks originating from littoral-neritic seas display evidence of landslide deformation. Our study identifies the depositional environment of the Zongzhuo Formation in Dingri as a slope turbidite fan, with its provenance traced back to the passive continental margin. Notably, this contrasts with the Zongzhuo Formation found in the Jiangzi-Langkazi area. Based on existing data, we conclude that the Zongzhuo Formation in the Dingri area was influenced by the Dingri-Gamba fault and emerged within a fault basin of the passive continental margin due to Neo-Tethys oceanic subduction during the Late Cretaceous period. Its provenance can be attributed to the littoral-neritic sea of the northern Tethys Himalaya region. This study holds significant implications for understanding the tectonic evolution of Tethys Himalaya and for reevaluating the activity of the Dingri-Gamba fault, as it controls the active deposition of the Zongzhuo Formation.

The Influence of the Closure of the East Paleo-Tethys Ocean on Southern South china: Evidences from Kinematics and 40Ar/39Ar Geochronology of the Rongxian Ductile Shear Zone in Southeastern Guangxi

The Triassic was a crucial period in the tectonic evolution of the South china Block. Research on tectonic deformation during this period provides information on intracontinental orogenic mechanisms in South china. In this study, alongside thermochronological analyses, we examine the macroscopic and microscopic structural features of the Rongxian ductile shear zone, located south of the Darongshan granite in the southeastern part of Guangxi Province, on the southern margin of South china. Sinistral shear is indicated by the characteristics of rotated sigma-type feldspar porphyroclasts, stretching lineations defined by elongated quartz grains and the orientations of quartz c-axes. LA-ICP-MS U-Pb dating of zircons from two samples of granitic mylonite and one of granite yielded ages of ca. 256 Ma. Furthermore, two samples of granitic mylonite yield muscovite Ar-40/Ar-39 plateau ages of 249-246 Ma. These results indicate that the Rongxian ductile shear zone resulted from Early Triassic deformation of the late Permian Darongshan granite. This deformation was likely related to the closure of the eastern Paleo-Tethys Ocean and the subsequent collision of the South china and Indochina blocks, during the early stage of the Indosinian orogeny.

Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) as one of non-degradable wastes has become a huge threat to the environment and human health. Chemical Recycle of PET is a sustainable way to release 1,4-benzenedicarboxylic acid (BDC) the monomer of PET as common used organic linker for synthesis of functional Metal-organic-frameworks (PET-derived MOFs) such as UiO-66, MIL-101, etc. This sustainable and costeffective "Waste-to-MOFs" model is of great significant to be intensively investigated in the past years. Attributes of substantial porosity, specific surface area, exposed metal centers, uniform structure, and flexible morphology render PET-derived MOFs are well-suited for applications in adsorption, energy storage, catalysis, among others. Herein, in the present work, we have summarized recent advances in synthesis of PETderived MOFs using ex-situ and in-situ methods for typical applications of adsorption, catalysis and energy storage. Despite those improvements in synthesis methods and potential applications, challenges still remain in development of green and economical routes to fully utilize waste PET for massive manufacture of valuable MOF materials and chemicals. This review provides insights into the conversion of non-degradable PET waste to value-added MOF materials, and further suggests promising perspectives to develop the sustainable "Waste-to-MOFs" model in (c) 2024 Institute of Process Engineering, Chinese Academy of sciences.
