Challenges and countermeasures of urban water systems against climate change:a perspective from china

urban water systems are facing various challenges against climate change,impacting cities’security and their sustainable ***,there are three major challenges:submersion risk of coastal cities as glaciers melt and sea level rises,more and severe urban flooding caused by extreme weather like intensified storm surge and heavy precipitation,and regional water resource patterns challenged by alteration of spatial distribution of *** this,two strategies including proactive adaptation and positive mitigation were proposed in this article to realize the reconstruction and optimization of urban water systems,to enhance their resilience,and eventually increase their adaptability and coping ability to climate *** proactive adaptation strategy consists of 1)construction of sponge cities to accommodate the increased regular rainfall and to balance the alterations of spatial redistribution of precipitation;2)reconstruction of excess stormwater discharge and detention system to increase capability for extreme precipitation events based on flood risk assessment under future climate change;3)deployment of forward-looking,ecological,and integrated measures to improve coastal protection capability against inundation risks caused by climate change and sea level *** positive mitigation strategy is to employ the systematic concept in planning and design and to adopt advanced applicable energy-saving technologies,processes,and management practices,aiming at reduction in flux of urban water systems,reinforcement in energy conservation and carbon reduction in both water supply systems and wastewater treatment systems,and thus a reduction of greenhouse gas emission from urban water systems.

Metro is an important form of public transport in *** on the metro card data,we conduct the cluster analysis of Shanghai metro stations according to the pattern of passenger flow changing with *** the characteristics of travel time and surrounding land use are investigated for different types of stations to explore the relationship between urban land-use characteristics and travel activities reflected by passenger flow at metro *** is found that the passenger flow pattern of metro stations is closely related to the location conditions of stations and its surrounding land-use *** on various characteristics,285 metro stations are classified into four types,including residential-oriented stations,employmentoriented stations,employment-residence-oriented stations,and integrated functionaloriented stations,reflecting the interaction between spontaneous travel behavior and urban land-use characteristics and providing a reference for optimizing the urban functional structure and the spatial allocation of facilities.

City Network Evolution Characteristics of Smart Industry: Evidence from Yangtze River Delta, china

The dual-path model of industrial evolution and spatial progression has been widely acknowledged and incorporated into the strategic planning to promote the development of urban industries and regional ***,current research on inter-enter-prise city networks mainly focuses on the single sector of flows on all enterprise branches,such as product value chains and production factors,but neglects that of particular industry *** upon the new economic geography and city networks theory,this paper develops a methodological framework that focuses on the analysis of city network evolution characteristics of smart ***-larly,a conceptual model of smart industry enterprise-industry-city is proposed and then applied to a case study of smart industry in the Yangtze River Delta Region,*** enterprise supplier-customer data,a city network of smart industry is constructed and sub-sequently analyzed with the proposed *** indicate that the smart industry network in Yangtze River Delta Region exhibits a hierarchical structure and the expansion of the network presents a small-world network *** study not only makes a meth-odological contribution for revealing the industrial and spatial evolution path of the current smart industry,but also provides empirical support for the formulation of new economic development policies focused on smart industries,demonstrating the role of city clusters as carriers of regional synergistic development.

Experience of Sponge City Master Plan: A Case Study of Nanning City

As a new urban development pattern, the construction of sponge cities has been deeply integrated into the new urbanization and water safety strategy. Nanning City, as one of the first batch of experimental sponge cities in china, has undertaken exploration and practice on sponge city planning, construction, and management. The sponge city master plan of Nanning City establishes an urban ecological spatial pattern in order to protect the security of the sponge base. The sponge city construction strategy has also proposed an overall construction strategy of a sponge city in line with urban development features. Through the systematic analysis and planning, a "23+10+202" pattern of sponge city construction has been formed. "23" represents 23 drainage basins, in which major sponge facilities such as storage facilities, waterfront buffer zones, wetland parks, ecological rainwater corridor and sponge parks are allocated. "10" represents 10 sponge functional zones, which provide important reference for the establishment of sponge city construction index system. "202" represents 202 management units, which decomposes the general objective and provides technical support not only for sponge city construction and management, but also for the implementation of general objectives in the regulatory plan as well.

The walking friendliness of ladder trails for the elderly:An empirical study in Chongqing

Against the backdrop of a healthy city initiative in helping encourage and facilitate walking behavior,this study first elaborates the fitness function of the ladder trails,which largely form the daily living spaces for the people in mountainous cities or *** then analyses the existing research on the elements and guidelines of environmental design from the perspective of their pedestrian friendliness while discussing their suitability to the needs of the *** the research framework set up in the first part,empirical research focusing on the walking behavior of the elderly has been carried out based on two comparable cases of Chongqing Mountain ***,survey,and interviews have been applied to collect the *** study concludes with a summary of the elements and principles for designing ladder trails,which are walking-friendly for the elderly.

Understanding the spatiotemporal patterns of nighttime urban vibrancy in central Shanghai inferred from mobile phone data

In recent years,major cities around the world such as New York in USA,Melbourne in Australia,and Shanghai in china,have planned to boost their nighttime urban vibrancy levels to spur the economy and achieve cultural *** study of nighttime urban vibrancy from the perspective of spatiotemporal characteristics is increasingly being recognized as part of the essential work in the field of urban planning and *** research used mobile phone signaling records to measure urban vibrancy in central Shanghai and revealed its spatiotemporal patterns during ***,this research explored the changes of urban vibrancy within a day,studied the distribution of urban vibrancy during the nighttime,and visually presented the spatiotemporal changes of nighttime urban vibrancy in central ***,on the basis of the behavior pattern of each mobile user,we classified nighttime urban vibrancy into three different types:nighttime working vibrancy,nighttime leisure vibrancy,and nighttime floating *** then tried to determine how land use affected nighttime leisure *** results showed that urban vibrancy in central Shanghai exhibits a periodic pattern over one-day period.A high-level nighttime urban vibrancy belt is present within central *** offices,hotels,entertainment and recreational districts,wholesale markets,and express services contribute most to the vibrancy at *** addition,the correlation analysis shows that public and commercial facilities generate high levels of nighttime leisure vibrancy than residential *** mixed land use of public and commercial facilities and residential facilities within 500 m is more critical than the mixed use of a single land *** research can be a basis for supporting land use planning and providing evidence for policy-making to improve the level of nighttime urban vibrancy in cities.

Analyzing the urban Hierarchical Structure Based on Multiple Indicators of Economy and Industry: An Econometric Study in china

For a city,analyzing its advantages,disadvantages and the level of economic development in a country is important,especially for the cities in china developing at flying *** corresponding literatures for the cities in china have not considered the indicators of economy and industry in *** this paper,based on multiple indicators of economy and industry,the urban hierarchical structure of 285 cities above the prefecture level in china is *** indicators from the economy,industry,infrastructure,medical care,population,education,culture,and employment levels are selected to establish a new indicator system for analyzing urban hierarchical *** factor analysis method is used to investigate the relationship between the variables of selected indicators and obtain the score of each common factor and comprehensive scores and rankings for 285 cities above the prefecture level in *** to the comprehensive scores,285 cities above the prefecture level are clustered into 15 levels by using K-means clustering ***,the hierarchical structure system of the cities above the prefecture level in china is obtained and corresponding policy implications are *** results and implications can not only be applied to the urban planning and development in china but also offer a reference on other developing *** methodologies used in this paper can also be applied to study the urban hierarchical structure in other countries.

Spatial distribution and influencing factors of settlements in the farming-pastoral ecotone of Inner Mongolia,china

Rural settlements serve as an important part of the rural landscape,and environmental conditions influence their spatial *** hypothesize that there are variations in the spatial patterns of settlements across different farming–pastoral ecotones that exist in accordance with different human activities and environmental *** used remote sensing imagery,digital elevation model,and GIS technology to analyze and compare the spatial patterns of settlements and factors influencing these patterns across pastoral,agricultural,and ecotone areas in Inner Mongolia,china.A Voronoi model,adjacency analysis,landscape metrics,and quantitative analysis were *** results indicated that(1)the settlements in the three areas tended to have a random spatial distribution,and although there were no significant differences between the settlement types,agricultural settlements tended to be clustered and pastoral settlements tended to be evenly distributed;(2)the pastoral area had only a few large and sparsely fragmented patches;(3)the factors influencing settlement distribution mainly differed with respect to the NDVI,distance to roads and rivers,and elevation across three areas,but the slope degree was *** results indicated there are no significant differences between the spatial patterns of settlements along the agricultural to pastoral gradient,although environmental conditions ***,we can optimize the spatial pattern of settlements and achieve sustainable development within farming–pastoral ecotones.

Spatiotemporal Differences and Classification Regulation of urbanization Impact on Agricultural Development in Shrinking Areas:A Case Study of 15 Shrinking Cities in Three Provinces of Northeast china

Studying the impact of urbanization on agricultural development in shrinking areas is important for maintaining food security and promoted agricultural development in *** on the measurement results of the shrinking cities in the three provinces of Northeast china,this paper selects 15 shrinking cities as the research object,and constructs a multi-dimensional index system to explore the impact of the urbanization level of the shrinking areas on the agricultural development in the region since 2007–2019,analyzes the influencing factors and their differences by using the geographically-weighted regression model and Geodetector,and proposes a targeted regulation *** results show that:1)overall,there is a negative correlation between the urbanization level and the agricultural development level in the contracted areas of the three northeastern *** urbanization level in these areas has a certain negative impact on the overall level of agricultural development;2)regarding the time dimension,the impact of urbanization level on the agricultural development level in the contracted areas of the three northeastern provinces gradually increases over time;3)regarding the spatial pattern,the overall impact of shrinking urbanization levels in the three provinces of Northeast china on the agricultural development shows a significant distribution pattern of high in the east and low in the west;4)the total population and natural population growth rate at the end of the year were the main factors influencing a certain level of urbanization on agricultural development in the shrinking cities while population density and the urban fixed asset investment rate were the secondary factors;and 5)the main reasons why the level of agricultural development in different cities was affected by the level of urbanization were ***,they can be categorized into areas of population loss and spatial construction,which can be further divided into area of population

Dynamic transfer and driving mechanisms of the coupling and coordination of agricultural resilience and rural land use efficiency in china

The joint study of agriculture and rural areas is of great significance for safeguarding agricultural development,revitalizing rural areas,and enhancing farmers'*** paper aims to assess the spatiotemporal evolution characteristics of the coupling and coordination degree of agricultural resilience and rural land use efficiency and their dynamic transfer law and driving mechanisms,based on panel data of 31 provinces(municipalities and autonomous regions)in china from 2010 to *** results showed:(1)Good coupling and coordination of agricultural resilience and rural land use efficiency,with reduced temporal differentiation degrees between regions;(2)Significant spatial autocorrelation between the overall coupling and coordination degrees of agricultural resilience and rural land use efficiency,forming cold spot and hot spot spatial patterns in the western and eastern parts,respectively,with a central transition area;(3)A spillover effect of the dynamic transfer process,with a manifested specific law as"club convergence","Matthew effect",and progressive development characteristics;(4)The key roles of the natural,social,economic,and policy indicators in the coupling and coordination development process of agricultural resilience and rural land use ***,the selected indicators showed substantial spatial differences in their influences on the coupling and coordination process between provinces.
