At the end of 2022,the adjustment of the coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)pandemic control policy in China resulted in alarge-scale increase in public *** compare the fertility parameters of male patients before and after the adjustments ofthe COVID-19 pandemic control policy in China,we collected data on patients’medical histories and laboratory examinations ontheir first visits between June 2022 and March 2023 in five different *** were divided into five groups according tothe timeline of the policy *** data we collected from male patients included semen quality and serum reproductivehormone levels,and intergroup comparisons were made using the Mann–Whitney U and Chi-square *** total,16784 casesunderwent regular semen analysis,11180 had sperm morphology assessments,and 7200 had reproductive hormone *** showed declining trends in semen volume,sperm motility,and the progressive sperm motility rate after the policy *** comparison revealed an initial decrease and gradual recovery in progressive motility *** morphology analysisshowed increased neck and tail abnormalities after the policy *** significant change in hormone levels was *** the adjustment of the COVID-19 prevention policy in China,a decline in sperm motility and morphology was *** trend may gradually recover over 2 *** the policy adjustment,reproductive hormone levels were relatively stablethroughout,except for an increase in luteinizing hormone(LH).These changes in semen parameters suggest that the policyadjustment had a short-to medium-term impact on male reproductive function.

To investigate the effect of doxorubicin(DOX) on gene expression of the myocardial sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR)Ca 2+ transport proteins and the mechanism of taurine(Tau) protecting cardiac muscle cells, 9 rabbits were injected with DOX , 8 rabbits with DOX and Tau, and 9 rabbits with normal saline. Cardiac function , concentration of calcium in cardiomyocytes (Myo[Ca 2+ ] \%i\%), activity of SR Ca 2+ ATPase(SERCA2a), level of SERCA2a mRNA and Ca 2+ released channels(RYR2)mRNA were detected. The left ventricle tissues were observed by electron microscopy. The results showed that cardiac index, left ventricular systolic pressure, activity of SR Ca 2+ ATPase and level of SERCA2a mRNA decreased , while Myo[Ca 2+ ] \%i\% increased in DOX treated rabbits. DOX could not affect the level of RYR2 mRNA. Tau intervention could alleviate the increase of left ventricular diastolic pressure, Myo[Ca 2+ ] \%i\% and the decrease of SERCA2a mRNA induced by doxorubicin. The results suggested that downregulation of SERCA2a gene expression was an important mechanism of DOX induced cardiomyopathy and that Tau could partially improve the heart function by reducing calcium overload and alleviating downregulation of SERCA2a mRNA.

Change in the body temperature of healthy term infant over the first 72 hours of life

Objective: To determine the range of body temperature in a group of healthy Chinese term neonates over the first 72 hours of life and to assess the influence of body weight, gestational age and route of delivery. Method: All 200 consecutive cases of neonates delivered at our hospital from March to August 2001 were included in this retrospective study. Temperatures were measured immediately after delivery, after 30 minutes, 1 hour, 2 hours, 8 hours and 15 hours and on the 2nd and 3rd day. Axillary temperatures ranging from 36.5 篊 to 37 篊 were regarded as normal. No cases of maternal fever or systemic infection of the newborns were discovered. All infants were discharged in good general condition. Results: The mean rectal temperature at birth was 37.19 篊. The lowest average temperature was reached at 1 hour after delivery (36.54 篊) with a significant difference between natural delivery (36.48 篊) and section (36.59 篊) (P<0.05). Temperature subsequently rose to 36.70 篊 at 8 hours and 36.78 篊 at 15 hours (P<0.05). Hypothermia was seen in 51.8% and hypothermia in 42.5% of the patients. On the 3rd day after delivery, 96% of all temperatures were in the normal range. A significant relation was found between hypothermia and both low birth weight (P<0.001) and low gestational age (P<0.05). Conclusion: The ref-erence range presently used did not include all physiological temperatures in the first 72 hours of life. Considering other factors, such as birth weight, route of delivery, gestational age and body temperature on the 2nd and 3rd day of life, may help to correctly assess the significance of temperatures beyond the reference range.

AIM: To investigate the pathogenic mechanism of Hirschsprung's disease (HD) at the molecular level and to elucidate the relationship between RET oncogene and Chinese patients with ***: Exon 13 of RET oncogene from 20 unrelated HD patients was analyzed with polymerase chain reactionsingle strand conformation polymorphism (PCR-SSCP). The positive amplifying products were then sequenced. According to the results of SSCP and DNA sequence, SSCP was done as well for the samples from the family other members of some cases with mutated RET ***: SSCP analysis indicated that mobility abnormality existed in 4 unrelated HD patients. Direct DNA sequence analysis identified a missense mutation, T to G at the nucleotide 18 888 and a frameshift mutation at the nucleotide 18 926 insG. In a HD family, the sicked child and his father were the same heterozygous missense mutation (T to G at nucleotide 18 888).CONCLUSION: Among Chinese HD patients, RET gene mutations may exist in considerable proportion with different patterns. These new discoveries indicate that RET mutations may play an important role in the pathogenesis of unrelated HD in the Chinese population. PCR-SSCP combined with DNA sequence can be used as a tool in the genetic diagnosis of HD.

Pigeon chest: comparative analysis of surgical techniques in minimal access repair of pectus carinatum (MARPC)

Background After minimally invasive repair for pectus excavatum (MIRPE), similar procedures for pectus carinatum were developed. This study aimed to analyse the various published techniques of minimal access repair for pectus carinatum (MARPC) and compare the outcomes. Data sources Literature was reviewed on PubMed with the terms 'pectus carinatum', 'minimal access repair', 'thoracos-copy' and 'children'. Results Twelve MARPC techniques that included 13 articles and 140 patients with mean age 15.46 years met the inclusion criteria. Success rate of corrections wasn = 125, about 89% in cumulative reports, with seven articles reporting 100%. The complication rate was 39.28%. Since the pectus bar is placed over the sternum and has a large contact area, skin irritation was the most frequent morbidity (n = 20, 14.28%). However, within the complication group (n = 55), wire breakage (n = 21, 38.18%) and bar displacement (n = 10, 18.18%) were the most frequent complications. Twenty-two (15.71%) patients required a second procedure. Recurrences have been reported in four of twelve techniques. There were no lethal outcomes. Conclusions MARPC techniques are not standardized, as MIRPE are, so comparative analysis is difficult as the only common denominator is minimal access. Surgical morbidity is high in MARPC and affects > 2/3rd patients with about 15% requiring surgery for complication management.

Impedance during radiofrequency (RF) catheter ablation procedures is dependent on a variety of parameters related to the catheter, cabling, reference patch, body size, and temperature. To examine the influence of body size, impedance was measured during clinical ablation procedures in 93 patients (Group I) with a wide range of body sizes. In 14 other patients (Group II), impedance was measured during variations in catheter tip size (5, 6 and 7 Fr), reference patch size (120 and 60 cm2), patch location (chest vs. thigh), and catheter tip tissue contact. The average impedance was also compared to average tip temperature in Group II patients. Impedance decreased with increasing catheter tip size, reference patch size and proximity of the patch to the heart. However, the effects of body geometry were complex. For example, using a chest patch, impedance increased with body surface area, but using a thigh patch it decreased, suggesting that lung volume may increase impedance, but body width may actually decrea

China has the largest number of children in the world. The population of children between 0 and 14 years of age was about 227 million in 2015. It is a great and arduous task to ensure the healthy growth of all children in China. Mater-nal and child health care in China has achieved significant improvements. China has achieved the Millennium Develop-ment Goal 4 [ 1 ], the mortality rate of children under 5 years of age showed an overall downward trend from 61.0 per 1000 in 1991 to 10.7 per 1000 in 2015 (2)However, China still faces many challenges, such as the serious shortage of pediatricians, shortage and uneven distribution of medical resources, imbalances among different population groups and different regions.
