One of the hot debates in the conservation community is whether to focus on individual species(for example,through species recovery plans,or lists of threatened species)or on systems approaches(such as the ecosystem approach advocated by the Convention on Biological Diversity).This paper will discuss some of the various options,before reaching a conclusion that both approaches are valid and mutually reinforcing,and that the dichotomy is a false *** more importantly,no conservation investment is likely to be effective if economic,social,and political factors are driving in the opposite ***,we need multiple approaches that build a stronger political constituency,new ways of providing knowledge for decisions,better ways of mobilizing information and dynamic approaches that enable us to adapt to changing conditions,and new ways to generate funding for conservation.

The concept of payments for ecosystem services is being developed as an important means of providing a more diverse flow of benefits to people living in and around habitats valuable for *** Kyoto Protocol,under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change,includes a Clean Development Mechanism to provide for payments for certain forms of carbon sequestration that may benefit animal species(at least as an incidental benefit).Other market-based approaches for paying for carbon sequestration services outside the Kyoto framework are being promoted in various parts of the *** common form of payment for ecosystem services is compensating upstream landowners for managing their land in ways that maintain downstream water quality;this can include habitat management that benefits wild animal *** biodiversity itself is difficult to value,it can be linked to other markets,such as certification in the case of sustainably-produced forest *** paper expands on some of the markets for ecosystem services that also benefit wildlife,identifies relevant sources of information,and highlights some of the initiatives linking such markets to poverty *** markets work for ecosystem services requires an appropriate policy framework,government support,operational institutional support,and innovation at scales from the site level to the national *** have much to contribute to all of these steps.

The leading direct cause of the loss of biodiversity is habitat alteration and *** we are to address this cause directly,we need to find ways of changing the behavior of rural *** has shown that this is done most effectively through the use of economic instruments,ranging from taxes that discourage over-exploitation,to direct payments for conservation activities carried out by rural land-owners or those occupying the *** many parts of the world,governments provide incentives such as tax breaks to private *** countries recognize specific use rights on particular parts of the land,enabling the land-owners to earn appropriate *** many protected areas have resident human populations,it is especially important that they be encouraged to contribute to the objectives of the protected area,and economic incentives offer an important way of doing so;they might,for example,be given employment in the protected area or in associated tourism *** payments to farmers for conserving watersheds is becoming increasingly popular,in both developed and developing *** conservation will require both removing perverse subsidies and developing a wide range of approaches for rewarding land-owners for biodiversity conservation activities.

Climate change and land use change pose a threat to the world’s biodiversity and have significant impacts on the geographic distribution and composition of many bird species,but little is known about how they affect threatened large-sized waterbird species that rely on agricultural *** address this gap,we investigated how climate and land use changes influence the distribution and nesting habitats of the globally vulnerable Lesser Adjutant(Leptoptilos javanicus) in *** 2012 and 2023,we collected distribution data from 24 districts and nesting site information from 18 *** a nation-wide breeding survey conducted in 2020,we documented a total of 581 fledglings from 346 nests in 109 *** ensemble model predicted a current potential distribution of 15%(21,637 km2) and a potential nesting habitat of 13%(19,651 km2) for the species in *** highest predicted current suitable distribution and nesting habitat was in Madhesh Province,while none was predicted in Karnali *** majority of this predicted distributional and nesting habitat falls on agricultural landscapes(>70%).Our model showed a likely range expansion of up to 15%(21,573 km2) for the distribution and up to 12%(17,482 km2) for the nesting habitat under SSP5-8.5 scenarios for the *** range expansion is expected to occur mainly within the current distribution and breeding range(Tarai and some regions of Siwalk),particularly in Lumbini and Sudurpashchim provinces,and extend to the northern portions(Siwalik and Mid-hill regions) in other ***,the current Protected Areas and Important Bird and biodiversity Areas are inadequate for providing optimal habitats for the *** the model suggests range expansion,the use of such novel habitats is primarily contingent on the availability and protection of large-sized trees(particularly Bombax ceiba,observed in 65% of colonies) in agricultural regions where nesting ***,our research sugges

Since 2015, community forests have been promoted in Togo as an alternative to protect areas from degradation and as a means of contributing to forest landscape restoration. The study focuses on the Nakpadjouak Community Forest (NCF) in Tami (Togo, West Africa) which contributes to community forests sustainable management. It aims in (i) mapping forest ecosystems and analysing their dynamic and (ii) characterizing the floristic diversity of the NCF. The ecosystems were mapped and their dynamic was evaluated based on Google Earth images of 2014 and 2020. Floristic and forestry inventories were carried out using the transect technique in a sample of 20 plots of 50 m × 20 m. The NCF was made up mainly by wooded/shrub savannahs (95.37%) and croplands/fallow (4.63%) in 2014. These two land use types undergone changes over the 6 years prior to 2020. By 2020, the NCF had 3 land use types: wooded/shrub savannahs (77.59%), open forest/wooded savannahs (22.23%), and croplands/fallows (0.18%). A total of 89 plant species belonging to 70 genera and 28 families were recorded within the NCF. The dominant species are: Heteropogon contortus (L.) ***. and Combretum collinum Fresen. followed by Pteleopsissuberosa Engl. & Diels, Annona senegalensis Pers. The most common species are: Lannea acida ***. s.l., A. senegalensis, Vitellaria paradoxa *** subsp. paradoxa, C. collinum and Acacia dudgeonii Craib ex Holland. Due to its small area of just 40 hectares and its diverse plant life, this community forest of Savannahs Region is a significant biodiversity hotspot and warrants conservation efforts.

When we think of forests we usually think of trees,plants and *** forests could not exist without fungi,which lie at the base of the biodiversity webs that support much of life on *** fungi live as branching,fusing networks of tubular cells known as mycelium which can make up between a third and a half of the living mass of ***,the total length of fungal mycelium in the top 10cm of soil is more than 450 quadrillion km:about half the width of our *** networks comprise an ancient life-support system that easily qualifies as one of the wonders of the living *** that,fungi represent a meagre 0.2%of our global conservation priorities.

《世界遗产公约》已由158个国家批准认可,它对全球具有文化和自然价值的场址的保护起着一个国际法规的作用。33处热带森林能被列入此公约的主要原因在于它们的全球生物多样性价值。这一系列场址成为全球生物多样性的精华之一,它约占全世界郁闭的热带森林的2.5%,对世界陆地生物多样性的保护作着重要贡献。虽然一系列的国际行动都将最终为森林的保护和可持续管理提供一个基本框架,但是《世界遗产公约》在当前提供了一个迅速调动就能起到保护大多数重要森林的机制。在过去,如果一个场址被认为很少受到人类活动的影响,它往往就被列入公约。然而,任何森林都有人类的足迹,同时我们也认为人类的活动应该与其维持全球生物多样性价值相一致。如果此公约能够更加直接地涉及人类活动对森林影响的普遍性事实,那么它就可以发挥更大的作用。为此,我们可采用更加适宜的以客观标准和指标为基础的管理方式,来确定其变化的阈限和引发管理响应,达到预期的发展多样性的目的。我们断定世界遗产中热带森林的最佳数量可以达到100个场址或场址群,这样的一个网络可以有效地保护世界森林生物多样性的绝大多数。目前世界热带森林的消耗速率敦促紧急的国际活动来确立一批优先保护的场址,而世界遗产保护区可以为此类活动提供最好的基本结构。
