CFRP （carbon fiber reinforced plastic） is used extensively in aircraft and spacecraft structures, because of its excellent mechanical properties. Ultrasonic testing, which is used as a non-destructive testing technique for CFRP, requires a contact medium. In contrast, eddy current testing does not require a contact medium, and when used for CFRP testing it has advantages not available with other techniques. CFRP is a laminate, with each layer being anisotropically conductive, and the distribution of the induced eddy current is yet to be determined. Here, to determine the eddy current distribution in the detection of flaws in cross-ply CFRP （0°/90°） by using a cross-point probe, we performed an FEM （finite element method） analysis of electromagnetic fields. We investigated the nature of the flaw signals and the differences in eddy current distributions between materials with and without flaws.

An ab initio calculation of the electric-field gradient(EFG)at the site of a phosphorous impurity substituting an Al atom in α-Al_(3)O_(2) is carried out using the WIEN2k code with the full-potential linearized augmented plane wave plus local orbital method(LAPW+lo)in the frame of density functional *** atomic lattice relaxations caused by the implanted impurities were calculated for two different charged states to well describe the electronic structure of the doped *** EFG at the site of the phosphorous impurity in the charged supercell calculated with the exchange-correlation potential of the Wu-Cohen generalized gradient approximation(WC-GGA)is 0.573×10^(21) V/m^(2).Then,the nuclear quadrupole moment of the I=3 state in ^(28)P is deduced to be 137 mb from the quadrupole interaction frequency of 190 kHz measured recently by theβ-NQR method.

AIM： To investigate the relationship between the chemotherapeutic drug efficacy and the expression of P-glycoprotein （PGP） and p53 protein in advanced hepatocellular carcinoma （HCC）. METHODS： The study was conducted on 41 patients with advanced HCC who were treated by repeated arterial infusion chemotherapy. Biopsy specimens from the tumor were collected before the start of treatment in all the patients, and the specimens were stored frozen until immunohistochemical staining, which was performed after the start of treatment, to detect PGP and p53 protein expressions. Twenty of the fortyone patients were treated with an anthracycline drug （epirubicin hydrochloride; anthracycline group）, and the remaining 21 were treated with a non-anthracycline drug （mitoxantrone hydrochloride in 11 patients and carboplatin in 10 patients; non-anthracycline group）. The relationship between the chemotherapeutic efficacy and the results of immunostaining were compared between the two groups. RESULTS： Before the start of the treatment, PGPpositive rate was 90.2% （strongly-positive, 36.6%） and p53 protein-positive rate was 34.1% （strongly-positive, 19.5%）. In the anthracycline group, the response rate was 40.0%. The number of patients showing poor response to the treatment was significantly larger in the patients with strongly positive PGP expression （P= 0.005）, and their prognoses were poor （P= 0.001）. in the nonanthracycline group, the response rate was 42.9%,and there was no significant relationship between the chemotherapeutic drug efficacy and the PGP or p53 protein expression. When only the data from the 11 patients treated with anthraquinone drug, mitoxantrone, were analyzed, however, the number of patients who showed poor response to treatment was significantly higher among the p53-positive patients （P= 0.012）, irrespective of the survival outcome. Androgens play a central role in prostate cancer pathogenesis, and hence most of the patients respond to androgen deprivation therapies. However, patients tend to relapse with aggressive prostate cancer, which has been termed as hormone refractory. To identify the proteins that mediate progression to the hormone-refractory state, we used protein-chip technology for mass profiling of patients＇ sera. This study included 16 patients with metastatic hormone-refractory prostate cancer who were initially treated with androgen deprivation therapy. Serum samples were collected from each patient at five time points： point A, pre-treatment; point B, at the nadir of the prostate- specific antigen （PSA） level; point C, PSA failure; point D, the early hormone-refractory phase; and point E, the late hormone-refractory phase. Using surface-enhanced laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry, we performed protein mass profiling of the patients＇ sera and identified a 6 640-Da peak that increased with disease progression. Target proteins were partially purified, and by amino acid sequencing the peak was identified as a fragment of apolipoprotein C-I （ApoC-I）. Serum ApoC-I protein levels increased with disease progression. On immunohistochemical analysis, the ApoC-i protein was found localized to the cytoplasm of the hormone-refractory cancer cells. In this study, we showed an increase in serum ApoC-I protein levels in prostate cancer patients during their progression to the hormone-refractory state, which suggests that ApoC-I protein is related to progression of prostate cancer. However, as the exact role of ApoC-I in prostate cancer pathogenesis is unclear, further research is required.
