Transforming waste particles into valuable adsorbents via amyloid-mediated molecular engineering

The high-value utilization of industrial solid waste using a facile and eco-friendly process is of great interest and significance in reducing environmental pollution and developing a green circular economy. Herein, we propose an amyloid-mediated molecular engineering strategy to transform particulate waste into valuable adsorbents for metal ions. Our method has the advantage of aqueous solution fabrication under mild conditions without the use of high-temperature hydrothermal methods and toxic chemical reagents. Amyloid-mediated molecular engineering manipulates the phase transition of bovine serum albumin(BSA)on particulate waste surfaces, resulting in a remarkable ～3.1 times improvement in the adsorption capacity of fly ash, a typical industrial solid waste for gold ions after modification with the phase-transitioned BSA(PTB). The resultant adsorption ability was 69–1,980 times higher than those of conventional and emerging adsorbent materials such as ion exchange resins, activated carbon(AC), covalent organic frameworks(COFs), and metal-organic frameworks(MOFs). We further demonstrated the application of our PTB-modified materials in the recovery of precious metals from low-grade gold ore and electronic waste leachates. Consequently, this strategy could increase the value of waste materials nearly 27 times. In addition, this method is generally extendable to other conventional industrial adsorbents such as resin, clay, and Al2O3, and enhances their adsorption capabilities at least twofold. Overall, this work provides a simple and green approach for improving the adsorption performance of solid particles, and is expected to develop into a universal strategy for transforming waste particles into high-value-added products.

CaH2-promoted activity of Ni-carbonate interface for CO2 methanation

Transition metal-carbonate interfaces often act as active sites in heterogeneous catalytic *** interface between transition metal and metal carbonate exhibits a dynamic equilibrium during the CO2hydrogenation reaction,involving surface carbonate hydrogenation and ***,there have been few reports on engineering the activity of the interface between transition metal and alkaline earth metal carbonate for catalytic *** work demonstrated that the incorporation of CaH2in Ni/CaCO3enhances the CO2methanation activity of the *** CO2conversion for Ni/CaH2-CaCO3reached 68.5%at 400°C,which was much higher than that of the Ni/CaCO3（31.6%） and Ni/CaH2-CaO （42.4%） ***,the Ni/CaH2-CaCO3catalysts remained stable during the stability test for 24 h at 400°C and 8 *** research revealed that CaH2played a crucial role in promoting the activity of the Ni-carbonate interface for ***2could modify the electronic structure of Ni and tune the structural properties of CaCO3to generate medium basic sites （OH groups）,which are favorable for the activation of H2and ***-situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy （FTIR） analysis combined with density functional theory calculations demonstrated that CO2activation occurs at the hydroxyl group （OH） on the CaH2-modified Ni-carbonate surface,leading to the formation of CO3H****,our study has confirmed that CO2methanation over the Ni/CaH2-CaCO3catalysts proceeds via the formate pathway.

Convergence from cluster to surface:ab initio calculations of Pd_n clusters

The"Metallic State Principle"and a way to constitute the metallic basis set are proposed,the latter is a modification of atomic basis set based on the free electron theory in solid state ***_n dusters have been carefully studied by means of ab initio calculations with atomic and metallic basis *** rules,namely the"Ground State Principle",the"Lowest-Spin State Principle"and the"Metallic StatePrinciple"have been investigated and the calculation results based on these three rules are compared with eachother in terms of metallic configuration of bulk Pd,d-band width,Fermi level,*** calculation resultsdemonstrate that the characteristic properties of bulk Pd may be reproduced to some extent even with a smallduster if the"Metallic State Principle"is adopted.

Effects of surface migration of adsorbed species on desorption

DFT Investigation of the Adsorption/dissociation Mechanisms of Methyl Nitrite on the Pd(111) surface

The adsorption behavior of methyl nitrite （MN） on the closed-packed Pd（111） sur- face has been investigated in detail by using density functional theory （DFT）. MN binds to the surface in two alternative forms, using the nitrogen atom attached to the surface. An overall net charge transfer from the substrate to the cis-MN molecule is also confirmed. In addition, the reaction mechanism for the dissociation of MN on the Pd（111） surface has been identified and compared with the methanol decomposition via O-H scission. The results demonstrate that MN is a more active reactant than methanol for the oxidative addition to the Pd catalyst. The possible reason has been analyzed from the adsorption behaviors and reaction barriers, that is, MN is chemically absorbed on the Pd（111） surface; the CHaO-NO bond scission, leading to the formation of adsorbed methoxy species, is much more favorable than that of the O-H bond scission and has a large exothermic behavior.

surface Modification of Polyethylene by Heparin for Improvement of Antithrombogenicity

The purpose of this paper was to enhance blood compatibility of polyethylene （PE） film. PE film pretreated by argon plasma was subjected to ultraviolet （UV） -induced graft polymerization with Acrylic acid（AAc）（AAc-grafted PE films, PE-g-PAAc） without photo-initiator, then heparin was covalently immobilized on the PE surface （PE-g-HPAAc）. The surface properties and microstructure of PE-g-PAAc and PE-g-HPAAc were studied by static contact angle measurement, atomic force microscope （AFM）, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy （XPS） and Attenuated total reflectance Fourier transfer infrared spectroscopy （ATR-FTIR）. It was confirmed that AAc and heparin were successfully immobilized onto the surface of PE film. Results of platelet adhesion experiments indicated that the antithrombogenicity of the modified PE film was remarkably improved.

Preparation of CuS-P（NIPAM-co-MAA） Hybrid Microgels with Controlled surface Structures

Copper sulfide-poly（isopropylacrylamide-co-methacrylic acid） [CuS-P（NIPAM-co-MAA）] hybrid microgels with patterned surface structures have been synthesized by means of the polymer microgel template technique. The results showed that the surface morphology of the hybrid microgels could be regulated by controlling the decomposition of thioacetamide （TAA） in an acidic medium. The rate of precipitation and the amount of metal sulfide significantly affect the surface structures of the hybrid microgels.

Tunable magnetic orders in UAu_(1-x)Sb_2

Two nonstoichiometric UAu_(1-x)Sb_2(x = 0.25, 0.1) single crystals are successfully synthesized using a flux method,and their physical properties are comprehensively studied by measuring the dc-magnetization and electrical resistivity. Evidence for at least three magnetic phases is found in these samples. In zero field, both samples undergo an antiferromagnetic transition at a relatively high temperature, and with further cooling they pass through another antiferromagnetic phase,before reaching a ferromagnetic ground state. Furthermore, the magnetic order can be tuned by varying the site occupation of Au. Such a tunable magnetic order may provide an opportunity for exploring the potential quantum critical behavior in this system.

Electronic structures and thermodynamic stabilities of aluminum-based deuterides from first principles calculations

The alanates （complex aluminohydrides） have relatively high gravimetric hydrogen densities and are among the most promising solid-state hydrogen-storage materials. In this work, the electronic structures and the formation enthalpies of seven typical aluminum-based deuterides have been calculated by the plane-wave pseudopotential method, these being A1D3, LiA1D4, Li3A1D6, BaA1D5, Ba2A1D7, LiMg（A1D4）3 and LiMgA1D6. The results show that all these compounds are large band gap insulators at 0 K with estimated band gaps from 2.31 eV in A1D3 to 4.96 eV in LiMg（A1D4）3. The band gaps are reduced when the coordination of A1 varies from 4 to 6. Two peaks present in the valence bands are the common characteristics of aluminum-based deuterides containing A1D4 subunits while three peaks are the common characteristics of those containing A1D6 subunits. The electronic structures of these compounds are determined mainly by aluminum deuteride complexes （A1D4 or A1D6） and their mutual interactions. The predicted formation enthalpies are presented for the studied aluminum-based deuterides.
