Role of the Alleviating Aβ Toxicity in the Anti-AD Effect of Brown Wolfberry

Wolfberry (Lycium barbarum L.) is a medicinal herb with anti-aging and neuroprotective effects. The purpose of this study was to explore the enhanced neuroprotective effects of wolfberry water extract (RW)， and brown wolfberry water extract (BBW). The reduced percentage of reducing sugar in BBW was shown to be 62.8%， 64.3%， 39.8%， and 11.6% for glucose， fructose， maltose， and lactose compared to those of RW， as well as free amino acids. And the contents of total phenols and total flavonoids were increased by 62.0% and 33.1%. Melanoidins (1% ± 0.05%) were first isolated from BBW. RW and BBW increased anti-stress abilities (oxidative stress: 24.2% vs 35.7%， and heat stress: 10.9% vs 19.1%) while decreasing the ROS levels in vivo. RW and BBW reduced the rate of paralysis and odor cognitive deficits. At the same time， RW and BBW reduced the number of fluorescent spots of Aβ::GFP. The RW and BBW activated autophagy by upregulating the gene levels (bec-1， lgg-1， lgg-2， unc-51， vps-34， atg-5， atg-18， and sqst-1). Additionally， BBW promoted the nuclear-cytoplasmic ratio of DAF-16::GFP and fluorescence intensity of SOD-3::GFP by 39.4 fold and 1.16 fold. This study laid a new insight for exploring the Maillard reaction in improving the anti-AD activity of wolfberry.

Preparation of calcium sulfate whiskers from FGD gypsum via hydrothermal crystallization in the H_2SO_4-NaCl-H_2O system

Little attention has thus far been paid to the potential effect of solution composition on the hydrothermal crystallization of calcium sulfate whiskers prepared from flue-gas desulfurization（FGD） *** purified FGD gypsum was used as raw material,the morphology and phase structure of the hydrothermal products grown in pure water,H2SO4-H2O,NaCl-H2O,and H2SO4-NaCl-H2O solutions as well as the solubility of purified FGD gypsum in these solutions were *** results indicate that calcium sulfate whiskers grow favorably in the H2SO4-NaCl-H2O *** prepared using 10-70 g NaCl/kg gypsum-0.01 M H2SO4-H2O at 130 ℃ for 60 min,the obtained calcium sulfate whiskers had diameters ranging from 3 to 5 ｜xm and lengths from 200 to 600 ｜xm,and their phase structure was calcium sulfate hemihydrate（HH）.Opposing effects of sulfuric acid and sodium chloride on the solubility of the purified FGD gypsum were *** the co-presence of sulfuric acid and sodium chloride in the reaction solution,the concentrations of Ca2＋ and SO42- can be kept relatively stable,which implies that the crystallization of the hydrothermal products can be controlled by changing the concentrations of sulfuric acid and sodium chloride.

Preparation and microstructure characterization of poly-sialate-disiloxo type of geopolymeric cement

In order to investigate the influence of three key molar ratios （n（SiO2）/n（Al2O3）, n（K2O）/n（Al2O3） and n（H2O）/n（K2O））, a total of nine potassium poly-sialate-disiloxo （K-PSDS） geopolymeric cement matrices were designed according to orthogonal design principle. Subsequently, XRD, ESEM-EDXA and MAS-NMR techniques were employed to further characterize the microstructure of the most fully reacted geopolymeric cement matrix. The experimental results show that n（K2O）/n（Al2O3） has the most significant effect on compressive strength amongst the three ratios. The highest compressive strength （20.1 MPa） can be achieved when n（SiO2）/n（Al2O3）=6.5, n（K2O）/n（Al2O3）=0.8 and n（HEO）/n（K2O）=10.0. The FTIR spectra of nine PSDS geopolymeric cement matrices also indicate that geopolymeric cement matrix with the highest strength is the most fully reacted one and possesses the largest amount of geopolymeric cement products. The microscopic analysis reveals that PSDS geopolymeric cement matrix possesses structural characteristics similar to gel substances in having a wide range of Si endowments, but predominantly the framework molecular chains of Si partially replaced by 4-coordinated Al tetrahedral.

A Concise and Convenient Synthesis of Stilbenes via Benzils and Arylmethyldiphenylphosphine Oxides

A new and convenient synthetic method has been developed for the construction of stilbenes bearing electron-withdrawing group（s） by using benzils and arylmethyldiphenylphosphine oxides via sequences involving Wittig-Horner reaction and a rearrangement in the presence of t-BuOK in toluene under mild conditions. This approach could be readily applied to a facile synthesis of biologically important natural products, resveratrol and its derivatives, such as trimethoxystilbenes 1 （Z） and 2 （E）.

Thermal characterization of bio-based phase changing materials in decorative wood-based panels for thermal energy storage

Decorative wood panels containing pouches of bio-based phase changing materials(PCMs) were prepared. Three different PCM mixtures were used: a blend of capric and lauric acids as well as two commercial products, Puretemp?20 and Puretemp?23(Puretemp). The panels consist of engraved Medium Density Fiberboard(MDF) filled with a plastic pouch filled with PCM. High density fiberboard(HDF) was used on top of the panels to enclose the PCM pouches. PCM mixtures were first tested by differential scanning calorimetry(DSC). Phase change temperature and total heat storage of the panels were measured for both fusion and solidification with a Dynamic Heat-Flow Meter Apparatus(DHFMA). DSC and DHFMA results were compared, allowing a better understanding of results gathered from these two techniques. DSC calibration has been revealed important when assessing PCMs. The panels present a phase change temperature and a latent heat storage suitable for buildings applications. The panel made with Puretemp?23 presented the highest energy, with 57.1 J g^(-1). Thermal cycling was conducted on the panels to investigate thermal reliability, which revealed small modifications of thermal properties for two products. For all cases, latent heat was found stable. Hygro-mechanical behavior of the panels was also evaluated as these where designed to be esthetic decorative panels. This study exposes the potential of a new type of wood-based panels loaded with PCM for thermal energy storage and brings overall knowledge about PCM products thermal characterization.

Study of oxidization of coal–pitch by O_3

For the purpose of obtaining small molecular and oxygen-containing aromatic compounds, taking a toluene-extracted coal pitch as the research object, the oxidation of coal-pitch by ozone （03） in formic acid was studied. The coal-pitch sample and the oxidized pitch residue were characterized by elementary analysis and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy （FTIR）, while the small molecular products were analyzed by a gas chromatography-mass spectrometer （GC-MS）. The results show that the highest oxygen content of oxidized coal pitch had been acquired at a reaction temperature of 50℃C, an 03 flow rate of 6300 mg/h and a reaction time of 4 h. Quite a lot of hydroxyls and carbonyls were introduced into the structure of the oxidized coal-pitch, while the small molecules produced mainly involve nonpolar aro- matic compounds, aromatic anhydride and quinone compounds. It is speculated that the mechanism is direct electrophilic oxidation in which the molecules of 03 directly attack the aromatic ring at its carbon atoms with high electron density, and then generate hydroxyl or carbonyl until the aromatic ring cracks. This study shows that 03 can make the fused aromatic ring of coal-pitch become oxidized and depoly- merized, and hence the ozonization of coal-pitch can be a potential method for obtaining oxygen- containing aromatic compounds.

A low-cost green approach for synthesis of lead oxide from waste lead ash for use in new lead-acid batteries

This paper proposes a novel method relating to the recycling of waste lead ash originated from procedure of lead alloy *** spent lead ash was first disposed by acetic acid leaching system,where lead ash structure wrapping impurities would be *** synthesis of lead oxide products was conducted at a lower temperature of 90℃.The effect of molar ratio of CH3 COOH to lead content of the ash on leaching efficiency was studied through the acetic acid leaching *** results demonstrate that 84.6%of lead could be obtained in the leaching solution,while merely 0.7%of Fe blend in solution within a leaching time of 120 *** the stage of lead oxide synthesis from leaching solution,the yield of lead oxide products could reach up to 94.4%when the molar ratio of NaOH to lead in filtrate was *** novel green method could shed light on the reuse of lead from exhausted ash with a much more convenient and environmentally friendly procedure.

X-ray Microtomography of the Carbonation Front Shape Evolution of Cement Mortar and Modeling of Accelerated Carbonation Reaction

In situ monitoring of the microstructure evolution of cement mortar in accelerated carbonation reaction for different carbonation ages was carried out by X-ray computed tomography （XCT）. And the carbonation degrees of different time were measured by the volume fraction of uncarbonated and carbonated parts. Meanwhile, we presented a model for the carbonation of cement mortar by means of X-ray computed tomography （XCT）. Based on the principles of chemical engineering processes, the reacted products become a solid inert ash layer. Finally, the model was validated with results of accelerated carbonation of cement mortar. The model is thus able to reasonably predict the carbonation ohenomena for accelerated conditions.

Electrochemical and analytical characterization of three corrosion inhibitors of steel in simulated concrete pore solutions

Corrosion inhibitors for steel, such as sodium phosphate （Na3PO4）, sodium nitrite （NaNO2）, and benzotriazole （BTA）, in simulated concrete pore solutions （saturated Ca（OH）2） were investigated. Corrosion behaviors of steel in different solutions were studied by means of corrosion potential （Ecorr）, linear polarization resistance （LPR）, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy （EIS）, and potentiodynamic polarization （PDP）. A field emission scanning electron microscope （FESEM） equipped with energy dispersive X-ray analysis （EDXA） was used for observing the microstructures and morphology of corrosion products of steel. The results indicate that, compared with the commonly used nitrite-based inhibitors, Na3PO4 is not a good inhibitor, while BTA may be a potentially effective inhibitor to prevent steel from corrosion in simulated concrete pore solutions.

Influence of Zn and Mg Alloying on the Corrosion Resistance Properties of Al Coating Applied by Arc Thermal Spray Process in Simulated Weather Solution

In this study,Al–Zn and Al–Mg coatings were deposited on steel substrates by an arc thermal spray process.X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy were used to characterize the deposited coatings and corrosion *** circuit potential（OCP）,electrochemical impedance spectroscopy,and potentiodynamic studies were used to assess the corrosion characteristics of these coatings after exposure according to the Society of Automotive Engineers（SAE）J2334 solution of varying *** solution simulates an industrial environment and contains chloride and carbonate ions that induce corrosion of the deposited ***,the Al–Mg alloy coating maintained an OCP of approximately-0.911 V versus Ag/Ag Cl in the SAE J2334 solution even after 792 h of *** indicates that it protects the steel sacrificially,whereas the Al–Zn coating provides only barrier-type protection through the deposition of corrosion *** Al–Mg coating acts as a self-healing coating and provides protection by forming Mg_6Al_2（OH）_（16）CO_3（Al–Mg layered double hydroxides）.Mg_6Al_2（OH）_（16）CO_3has interlocking characteristics with a morphology of plate-like nanostructures and an ion-exchange ability that can improve the corrosion resistance properties of the *** presence of Zn in the corrosion products of the Al–Zn coating allows dissolution,but,at the same time,Zn_5（OH）_6（CO_3）_2and Zn_6Al_2（OH）_（16）CO_3are formed and act to reduce the corrosion rate.
